We all know that Ultras come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is only one common denominator, an ultra, by definition is any race over 26.2 miles. In our race spotlights over the past year, we have never covered a race like this one. We first heard about this race from our good friend Michelle Goldberg who connected us with the race director and we are grateful to have runners in the community that continue to make recommendations to us about guests and races. Thank you all for that! On to the race, the Warriors UltraRun is an overnight, underground running experience that carries runners over 28 miles as they recreate the escape route from the iconic 1979 cult film by Walter Hill. After attending a 1 AM Conclave, held at a secret location in the Bronx, runners dressed as gang members pass movie shooting sights as they race for Coney Island. The course passes key landmarks from the movie and will run through Times Square and over the Brooklyn Bridge. Have we got your attention? It has gotten ours. The race is one of a kind. And there is so much more to learn about the race, so take some time to listen to our chat with the RD Todd Aydelotte. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and if you love the episode make sure to like and subscribe! Sandra Bullock Smith knows better than anyone how to crew an ultra. After supporting her husband Mike to over two hundred 100-Mile races, her experience is second to none and luckily for us, she has shared all that experience in her new book titled "Crewing An Ultra Run Start To Finish." And it is awesome! We sat down with Sandra to pick her brain and talk about crewing pitfalls, her most valuable tips, and what lessons she had to learn the hard way. If you will be crewing a friend or loved one, or are asking someone to come crew for you, this episode and this book is for you. You can check out the link to the book on Amazon at https://a.co/d/9yBCsvv . Enjoy!

An incredible conversation with a man who has fallen into the pit of despair and depression several times, and every time has come back stronger. Conor actually wrestled with an inclination to take his life on a couple of occasions long enough to subdue the impulse and instead focus on a way to numb the self-loathing. For most of his twenties alcohol helped to dilute the urge but that hollow feeling, the critical introspection always returned; he couldn't outrun his thoughts. Conor, now an ultramarathon runner from Glanmire, Cork, became the youngest ever winner of an Enduroman 200-mile Ultra Run in England, the first person in three years to finish in under the 60-hour time limit (59 hours 45 minutes) and only the second ever to achieve that feat. Running has set him free, physically and mentally. After a brief flirtation with boxing at the Sunnyside club, he joined the Siam Warriors, a Muay Thai boxing club. By the time he was 22, he'd earned an Irish title fight before a 2,000-capacity crowd in his native Cork, narrowly losing the fight. Afterwards, by his own admission he became an aggressive drunk keen to play the tough guy. One night he ended up in the Mercy Hospital, his nose splattered by a punch. He was working and drinking, trying to subdue the feeling that his life was a meaningless mess. He ran the Cork City Marathon (three hours, 38 minutes), a New Year resolution in 2018 on a cocktail of drink and modest training. He then singed up for a 200-mile run in England. He'd four months to prepare, training his mind as much as his body for 182 laps of the 1.1 mile circuit. He then came up with the idea of Project 32: 32 marathon-length runs, in 32 days in 32 counties. It was due to start on April 1st until coronavirus intervened, he now plans to do it later this year, and us currently in training for it. O'Keeffe, the ultramarathon runner, pursues sober living taking “full accountability” for his actions. “I show myself compassion. If you are living a life you don't want to then it is pointless adding another person to the list of people who are berating you for your choices; and that person is you. It keeps me in a happy and balanced state of mind.” Follow Conor's journey via his Instagram https://instagram.com/cokeeffe and check out his brilliant Podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/78Cdc6H7dbG5fvRKst9Wxf?si=A6FNsXknTsChheOrO_w4fA&utm_source=copy-link

Leanne Shrive's running journey began with the humble 5K, however, it quickly snowballed into something much more. After completing her first 5K, Leanne set herself a challenge of running 100K within 3 months and when she'd managed to achieve that, her hunger to find a bigger challenge drove her to complete 12 events within 12 months, building up to a half marathon. It's this drive that pushed Leanne to sign up for her first ultramarathon and marathon (in that order), which she completed all within two years of running. Today, Balega Ambassador Leanne co-runs a social running group which she started back in late 2019. With over 250 members of all abilities and fitness levels, and a new Couch to 5K course, Leanne and her friends organise regular social running events, often incorporating a run with a meet-up at the pub, to make running more sociable. In this episode, Leanne talks about her running journey, as well as her drive to find bigger and more challenging goals and we discuss the importance of a social running group.Host: Emily JonesGuest: Leanne ShriveMusic: Cali by WataboiFind out more about Run Panthera by visiting the website and enter the virtual women's half marathon.

Alicia Jenkins ran a DIY 200-mile ultra marathon around and between sleeping volcanoes. When covid-19 had caused many disruptions in people's lives. For Alicia, it meant the ultra running goal of her year, the bigfoot 200, was no longer being out on by destination trail - despite all of Candice's efforts to make it happen in 2020. Some people decided to run the course as an unofficial ultra-marathon where there are no records being officially kept nor is there any support from the many volunteers and staff required to put on a trail race; especially if that magnitude. For someone as competitive as Alicia, it was rad to hear her experience with a change of pace and focus. I emphasize the predicament that had her experiencing something very different from her normal dynamics when running. Tom Crossland is attempting a 90 day, 3500km ultra run from Greece to London, raising money and awareness to help end modern slavery and human trafficking. As if this wasn’t enough of a physical challenge already, Tom was born with Cerebral Palsy, a physical condition that affects the movement, posture and co-ordination Tom has on his left hand side. This is a great conversation about overcoming physical and mental barriers, and discovering that we’re ALL capable of much more than we think we are. I hope you find it as inspiring as I did! In this episode I talk about my discovery during my 48 mile run in July of 2019. I had a moment that allowed me to shed the pain that had calcified within my body over the years. With this discovery it has allowed me to move forward and shine bright.
On today's episode of Mental Strength Conversations we have out first ever guest on the show, Kelly Sutherland returning to talk about her first multi-day Ultra Run - the Alps to Ocean. The Alps to Ocean covers 320kms over six days running from the base of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mount Cook, to the East Coast town of Oamaru. As a seasoned Ultra Runner, Kelly has done a tonne of one day events but this was her first foray into the staged challenges... which even she wasn't sure how she'd go later in the event. Kelly talks about her preparation before the race and how she took each and every day. She talks about how she used other runners to support her, how the decisions she made weren't always rational and logical, how she managed her mindset throughout the later stages of the event, plus her mum's surprising reaction from the sidelines as Kelly ran past looking for moral support. There is a darker side to running events like the Alps to Ocean, including pushing through mental and physical pain, and Kelly shares her own journey through that, including sharing a revelation she's had about how she deals with mental challenges using perspective to give her situation some Today's episode is a exciting insight into managing both your physical and mental strength over long-term event. And it's inspirational to get a sense for what you can achieve if you're prepared to just keep going. Even if, as Kelly says, you're a disaster and you really don't want to. And what Kelly thinks she can achieve next is counter-intuitive yet inspirational. Enjoy today's episode of Mental Strength Conversations with Kelly Sutherland.

Because we could not wait until December 3rd for a race recap, especially Rob's first Ultra Run, he sat down with co-runner Karen Stone to provide us with a race recap and some insights along the trail. Sounded like it was a great experience, so let us know what you think and maybe next year we can get a bigger contingent up there representing teamE4E (or, if you're game, join John at The Endurance Society's Infinitus in June).
Imagine this scenario: You load up your car with everything you need to race both the Leadville 100 MTB race and to run the Leadville 100 running race, which occurs exactly one week after the MTB race. But you're still recovering from an injury so don't really expect to do the run. But you find yourself feeling good after your top-20 finish in the mountain bike race, so decide to do the run. Which you not only complete, but win. By close to two hours over second place. And within ten minutes of an all-time record. That's Rob Krar, and that's what we're talking about in this episode of the GU Energy Labs Pinnacle Podcast.
Gordon Ainsleigh is the grandfather of ultra trail-running being the very first man to complete The Western States 100 mile horse race on foot and giving birth to the modern world of ultra marathons. Usually, I fire off answers as fast as I can. Whether that's on Facebook or Twitter, I try to be as responsive as possible. But sometimes, life gets in the way. I simply don't have the time to answer all of your questions - especially when a single SR email goes out to about 80,000 runners... That does not, however, mean I'm not paying attention. In fact, I often save your running questions to get to them later. And that's exactly what we're doing today. Joining me as the SR Podcast's first co-host is my friend, fellow coach, and ultra runner Doug Hay. Fresh off his sub-15hr run at the Ultra Run of Champions (snagging him a sweet belt buckle!), Doug is helping us get to the bottom of some of your toughest questions. Let's dive in.
