In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Brian Glass discuss:Focusing on the client experience.Partnering with family in your law firm.Highest and best use of lawyers' time for law firm success. The power of coopetition and accountability. Key Takeaways:What gets in the way of lawyer business success is thinking the lawyer needs to be in the middle of everything in their practice.Identify and write down everything that is important to you - then reverse engineer your firm based on that criteria.Execute the good ideas and lessons learned from your peer groups. Having forced external accountability can help you to actually accomplish those goals.Give more power to your lieutenant - give them reins and responsibility, but also give them coaching and power to make decisions. You cannot do it all, especially if you are wanting to scale and grow. "If you have a good enough team, and you have a large enough vision, you can give them these projects to go and run with. I don't have to do it. I just have to have a big enough vision and create a fun enough and intellectually exciting enough place to work that attracts the kind of person that can go and execute on that for me." — Brian GlassGet a free copy of Steve's book “Sales-Free Selling” here: www.fretzin.com/sales-free-selling Thank you to our Sponsors!Get Staffed Up: https://getstaffedup.com/bethatlawyer/Overture: https://overture.law/Get Visible: https://www.getvisible.com/ Episode References: Vivid Vision by Cameron Herold - https://www.amazon.com/Vivid-Vision-Remarkable-Aligning-Business/dp/161961877XMy First Million: https://www.mfmpod.com/ About Brian Glass: Brian Glass is a personal injury lawyer in Fairfax, Virginia. Our mission is to help you take your next step on your ultra running journey. And, sometimes, if you are like us, you may not know what that next step may look like. This week we are taking a look at the Umstead 100, which is a 100 mile run located in Raleigh, NC at the William B Umstead State park. The course consists of 8 loops of 12.5 miles each and consists of crushed gravel and dirt compacted together and provides good footing. Despite being on the east coast it does have some elevation, though not a ton like a mountain race, this course has rolling hills and is considered runnable, but many runners will take the hills as walk opportunities - particularly the steeper ones on the back half of the loop. Total elevation gain is 8000 feet. Runners have 30 hours to complete and the race is also a Western States qualifier. Join us as we sit down with Rhonda Hampton, Race Director for the Umstead 100. For years, spirits have taken up a larger share of alcohol consumption across the U.S. Almost exclusively stealing sales from beer, this trend has been boosted by increased interest in cocktails. Whether making them at home, buying them canned and ready to drink, or going out to a bar or restaurant, America's cocktail culture is thriving as drinkers search for new flavor experiences. In this episode, we're going to explore a few aspects of why. Durham, North Carolina's Kingfisher bar was among this year's semi-finalists for a James Beard Award in the Outstanding Bar Program category. Considered one of the highest honors a food or drink-focused business can receive, the nomination came as a testament to the unique agricultural and gastronomic focus created by co-owners Michelle Vanderwalker and Sean Umstead. Along with a dedicated list of year-round cocktails built off southern fruit and vegetables, Kingfisher also experiments with the idea of time and place through special collections like its "Biome Series," a way to explore terroir through spirits through themes of different environments. A "Desert" cocktail includes yucca flower, a "Prairie" sunflower shoots and sunchokes, or "Marine" with its oyster shells and caviar. But that's the drinking part of what Kingfisher offers. As you'll hear in the first part of our conversation, creating a sense of space at Kingfisher is pivotal to a drinking experience. Similar to how people may see drinking at a brewery taproom an immersive opportunity with beer, Michelle will walk us through why so much detail goes into building somewhere people want to drink cocktails and what that conveys when they sit down at the bar. Spirits and cocktails are thriving all over the country and don't show any loss in momentum. With Michelle and Sean, you'll get a peek into why from their corner of the Southeast.

In this week's episode, our host Jonathan Aymin sits down Amanda Peoples owner of Walnut Hill Wedding Venue to discuss what it was like turning her childhood family home into a wedding destination, how she has changed her advertising strategy over time as they grew in business, and how she juggles family time and working full time at the venue with her husband. About Our Guest: Amanda Peoples has a background in luxury customer service from her years working at some of Raleigh's landmark businesses such as The Umstead and Bailey's Fine Jewelry. She then moved to the events industry working with Party Reflections before opening Walnut Hill. Walnut Hill was once Amanda's childhood playground. The barns were her play houses, the chicken coup was the best hiding place, and the lake was where she perfected her swimming skills. As she grew up this piece of land was where she would go to get away from the world and find peace. In 2019, they began hosting weddings at the family estate. When this all began she thought they would do a few weddings a year and it would be a small part time job while she stayed home with her children. Well she never could have imagined how they would grow! Walnut Hill is now not only a full time project for Amanda, but her husband Scott joined the company in 2022! This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Tara Dower. Tara shares her last 13 months which was amazing and very successful. Here is her list; attempted Benton MacKaye FKT in September of 2021. Injured myself badly. One month later I raced my first 100 miler called Uwharrie 100. Won for women. Raced my second 100 in Alabama called Blood Rock and came in 2nd overall behind Jeff Browning. Umstead 100 in April was my next 100 and placed 3rd women. Cruel Jewel was the next month in May and got 2nd woman. One month later went for the Benton MacKaye FKT again and smashed the overall record with sub 5 days. I think it was 4 days and 21 hrs and some change. Went on a little vacation to California a month later and finished backpacking the JMT. Started training for Run Rabbit and working hard to prepare for CO with different methods. The race went well and placed 2nd woman behind Annie Hughes with a huge 6 mile push at the end where I ran sub 8 minute miles and passed #2 woman. Whoa right?! also check out Tara's YouTube channel. What an amazing person. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
Mae Barker and Zach Hanna were two of the three Floridians who made to the Hennepin 100 in Illinois this year! From one Western States qualifier to the next, they've done races like the Pinhoti 100, the Laurel Highlands, Umstead, and the Rio Del Lago 100! With a hurricane almost cancelling travel, this power couple was able to manage a flight into Chicago and make it to the race on time. Mae finished first place overall for the women with a time of 19:21:04! Zach followed behind with a time of 25:57:56. The Hennepin 100 is Illinois' only point-to-point, all-trail ultramarathon! It takes you from Sterling, Illinois on the Rock River to Colona, Illinois along the historic and beautiful Hennepin Canal. On the course, you pass by the historic locks and lift bridges, fields of corn, and the multitude of local farms. Mae is also the Race Director for the Angry Tortoise 25k/50k! Coming in 2023, the race will be celebrating in 10th year anniversary in the Cary State Forest, located on the outskirts of Jacksonville.

This year Tyler Andrews was one of the elite contenders in the men's field for the Leadville 100. He had previously run there in 2021 placing 16th overall and this year he placed 4th overall with a time of 18:40:04! He has had some pretty serious FKTs on the high-altitude trails in Chile, Ecuador and Peru as part of a journey dubbed the Los 10 FKT Project. He's also a two-time U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier with a personal best of 2:15:52. Jeff Iosa also ran out at the Leadville 100 this year making it to 62 Miles. His 2022 schedule has been busy with the Long Haul 100, Black Canyon 100k, Old Dominion, crewing at the Western States 100, the Vermont 100 and of course Leadville. With Leadville being the bump in the road, Jeff still has the Wasatch 100 as part of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning Series. Brian Sharbono and Robert Sterba also have run the Leadville 100, they completed the course in the 2021 race placing 43rd (23:42:12) and 179th (28:52:08). Brian has recently placed 2nd overall at the Umstead 100 and won the Long Play Trail Run and the Monroe Cross Trail 50 Mile. Robert has also recently completed the RUT in Big Sky, MT. He has also run races like the Bandera 100k, Azalea 24 Hour, Long Haul 100, and has his sights set on Pinhoti (where Jeff and Brian met in the bathroom line back in 2018).
When accidents happen, the first thing to do is to ensure to seek appropriate medical help first. When there needs to be an investigation to give some explanation and justice to the incident, that is when having a personal injury lawyer will help tremendously. Brian Glass talks about the dangers of not knowing enough and the ins and outs of this law practice. Brian Glass is a personal injury lawyer in Fairfax, Virginia. His practice is limited to the representation of injured people against insurance companies and the people who hurt them. He recognizes that insurance companies have endless sums of money to throw at the defense of these cases and he enjoys the David vs. Goliath challenge. Brian grew up in Fairfax where he still lives with his wife and three sons. He attended Robinson Secondary School and James Madison University. After college, he attended law school at the College of William & Mary, where he was named a Benjamin Rush Scholar for excellence in Health Law & Policy. Brian loves pushing himself to see how far he can run. From chasing the runners from high to low points and back again, he enjoys testing the limits of what is possible for himself. He has completed dozens of marathons, 50 milers, and 24-hour footraces (think - just how many times can you run that loop in a day?). His proudest running moment is finishing the Umstead 100-mile race in a time of 23 hours, 18 minutes, and 25 seconds. Afterward, he immediately fell asleep. Listen in as Brian Glass shares what you need to know about finding a personal injury lawyer in order for proper evaluation and processes in dealing with accidents. [00:01 - 11:45] Find the Right Lawyer for You The importance of doing research to find the right lawyer for the case How personal injury attorneys go beyond personal injury cases Beware of those lawyers who can do “absolutely everything” [11:46 - 29:42] Knowing the Law is the Difference Between a Lot of Money and No Money How many waivers are actually invalid Knowing the law or having somebody on your team that knows the law is important when dealing with any injury Making educated decisions on what to do next [29:43 - 34:35] Working with Lawyers who can Deliver Why clients need to find a lawyer who is happy to work with them Looking at the potential financial reward and the potential emotional reward [34:36 - 36:59] Closing Segment It's all about accomplishment and achievement Connect with Brian! Closing words Tweetable Quote: “It starts with having a really clear vision of what you want your life to look like, keeping that vision in a place where you can see it, and driving towards that… Spend some time in thought about what you really want and devise your way to get there. ” - Brian Glass Connect with Brian: Website: https://www.benglasslaw.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fairfaxpersonalinjury/ LEAVE A REVIEW + help someone who wants to explode their business growth by sharing this episode or click here to listen to our previous episodes. Today we talk to each other! Devon and Alison chat about all things racing including Umstead and the DY DIY Slam, choosing authentic goals and setting expectations and more. Enjoy!
Devon Yanko's resume speaks for itself. She's had success at numerous signature races over her career, including victories at the Leadville 100, Javelina 100, and a 3rd place finish at Western States, to name a few. But after years of pursuing races for their prestige, she found her motivation drifting towards other goals. Thus was born Devon's 2022 DY DIY Slam, an ambitious plan to run 5 100-mile races within the span of just a few months. Blister running editor, Matt Mitchell, caught up with Devon after her overall win and course record run at the Umstead 100, the first race of her project. The two talk about Devon's time running in the Bay Area and her recent move to Colorado before diving into her experience at Umstead 100; the performance-enhancing effects of techno music; the history of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning; what led Devon to invent her own “DY DIY Slam”; and much more. Oak Miller and Kevin "Law Dawg" Jordan are in fact, not dead to Cultra. They are very much alive and well and we cherish them. I mean, imagine being the kind of person that cares what podcasts people listen to? As far as Umstead is concerned- Fred is like "yeah whatever, I only ran 87.5 miles, so please don't talk to me about it" but dude that is stout AF. At any rate, two members of the Cultra Fam got together and ran Umstead 100 in under 24 hours. Each helped the other to make sure they stayed on track, and the results were rad but the subsequent podcast was even radder. The Fam is alive and well, so consider being like them and throwing a dollar in the Patreon bucket... Today I am chatting with Brian Sharbono, he won this inaugural Monroe Cross Trail 50 Miler this year as he preps for the Umstead 100. He has a handful of great runs at races such as winning the 2021 Pine Mountain 19 Miler and the Pine Mountain 46 Miler in 2019. He's done the Sweat, Swat, n Swear and took a victory at the River to Sea 6 Hour. At the 2021 Leadville 100, he ran a time of 23:42:12 to have a Top 50 finish. So last weekend, that last weekend of January the Monroe Cross Trail 50 Miler took place in its inaugural event! Diane Romero-Lopez knocked it out of the park with this one. Now, it's a paved point-to-point 50 miler that starts in Volusia County, starting from Rotary Park in Edgewater, Florida and going 50 miles to the finish line at Central 28 Beer Company in DeBary, Florida. Brian Sharbono took the victory this year with a time of 6:13:19 as he preps for the Umstead 100. Marc Burget took that 2nd overall with a time of 6:31:26! Luis Gomez, who placed second at Long Haul this year came in 3rd with a time of 7:28:59. The women's race was a close finish!! The first woman came in 4th overall, Joanne Fisher, she ran a time of 8:11:41. She was shortly followed by 5th place overall, and of course your second place woman… Jennifer Jordan with a time of 8:11:53. Shirley Olson was your third woman and 9thoverall with a time of 9:10:51!
