In college Scott and his friend found themselves hanging up flyers across campus to come watch their new band, Badfish play Sublime tribute songs in the early 00's! As the band kept booking gigs, and Scott found himself in his first computer science job post-grad, he was faced with a tough decision. Should he continue living this double life of cubicle by day, band by night, or quit and follow his dream? Fast forward 23 years later and Scott tells us what it's been like since he made that decision to pursue music full-time! We chat about life on the road, the business side of things, writing their own music (they're coming to Maine on April 20th!), and everything in between.  See Badfish - A Tribute to Sublime "High With You Tour" at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on Saturday, April 20th at 8:00pm. As his Tales From The Concert segment was about to begin, Greg joins the show. It seems that Phil Lesh is critical and we learn there's a consistent structure to the band's live performances. It's still early in his trip, but Jay is starting to see and appreciate the band in new ways. Finally, Jay discusses The Recording Academy's (organization behind the Grammy awards) decision on A.I. generated music. It is a vastly non-committal policy, but a human has to have been meaningfully involved somewhere in a part of the writing and/or performance of the song...there's room for it to adapt as needed, but they put out a policy and that's what matters!Song: Grateful Dead - “Slipknot“

Interview with singer-songwriter/guitarist Jake Burns of Rockstead OH based rock reggae band  About Rockstead The feeling of love. The power of unity. The essence of happiness. The strength of togetherness and positive vibrations. The highs of living life and the lows of dealing with its obstacles. All of these things encapsulate the music of Cincinnati, OH-based Rockstead, a five-piece, passion driven rock/reggae group.  With roots leading as far back as middle school, Rockstead combines a lifetime full of influences ranging from rock, punk, reggae, jam and metal. In their early days Rockstead ruled the college party scene in Ohio with a schedule full of impromptu house shows that led to packed basements of DIY venues and later, massive crowds attending college fests such as Ohio University's infamous spring festivals. This early success catalyzed the debut of their first album “Wake Up and Live” (2013) shortly followed by their popular self-recorded “Rise” EP (2014). These releases ignited their inner road warrior leading to a plethora of plays at music festivals and concert venues across the Midwest. Since then, Rockstead continues to widen their reach touring throughout the Eastern U.S. and down into Florida. Though member changes have occurred over the years, front man singer/guitarist Jake Burns continues to drive the group forward as they have shared stages with international acts such as The Wailers (Jamaica) and Sticky Fingers (Australia) as well as many staple East coast reggae acts like Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Badfish, Tropidelic, Bumpin' Uglies and Ballyhoo!. The band has now grown to include Nate Anuci (drums), Jacob Riley (lead guitar), and Alex Kessis (bass). With a healthy gap since their last full release (Homegrown, 2016) Rockstead dropped their first studio album “You're In Control” in September 2020 which scored them multiple features in blogs and podcasts across the scene. By using their relentless high-energy performances and genre-bending set lists, while aligning their unwavering dedication to the do-it-yourself work ethic, Rockstead shows no sign of slowing down their mission of bringing people together through music.   Rockstead's info https://rocksteadband.com Feb 10th John Wayne and the Payne, with Rockstead, and Ziggy D of C-Level at the Beachland ballroom  Tickets https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/12802825/jon-wayne-and-the-pain-rockstead-ziggy-d-of-c-level     C-Level album release show March 4 at the Grog Shop with Joint Operation, The Cat's Meow, and The Frans Tickets  https://grogshop.gs/event-details/12836645/c-level-think-4-yourself-album-release-party

In this week's episode I sit down with Paul Bobadilla and his wife Christina to talk about their new local business, a coffee pop-up. Before I get to the conversation part of this episode, I first announce the winner of our Instagram giveaway. Badfish hooked us up with a lot of merch and to celebrate our reaching over 500 followers on Instagram, we decided to do an Instagram giveaway. The winner announced was @danikristino!!! Congrats! [You will receive a message via Instagram and details of how to claim your merch will be detailed]. Almost exactly two years ago, on Easter weekend in 2017, Paul Bobadilla and his wife Christina started their coffee pop up out of their garage, originally with the goal to meet their neighbors and bring their immediately community closer together. They have continued to uphold that mission along with providing a premium cup of coffee to all their customers. Since then they have grown and now serve coffee at a variety of pop-up locations all over San Pedro. Paul on treating our homeless neighbors with respect : "As we are living and doing life and doing business in the streets... how do we continually acknowledge these people that we see? ...We have to remind one another that they have a lot of value." A lot of care and consideration is put into each cup of coffee that's made. The acronym "CBC" at the end of the Trinity name can roughly be summed up to these three words: "coffee", "brew" and "culture". These things are not overlooked by Paul in the process of making a good cup of coffee for his customers. He makes sure that the coffee he chooses is ethically sourced from farms that pay their harvesters fair wages. The brewing processes is just as important as the choice and source of coffee. Paul uses a pour-over device to make every cup and will eventually look into the cold-brewing process for iced coffee drinkers. Finally the aspect of culture and community are part of the Trinity CBC brand. Its not a fast cup on the go, it's intended to be enjoyed with conversation. We also discuss how small business can keep in mind the social good they want their businesses to be a part of from early stage. Even in the start-up phase, him and his wife consider how they want to make their San Pedro community a better place. In this week's episode I sit down and chat with Carolina Brown, owner of Rok 'n' Ell Baby Boutique. We discuss her small business journey and what it's like to have a small business at Weymouth Corners. In the beginning of this episode I make a couple announcements related to our sponsor Badfish. The first is really only a reminder to use the code "HelloSP" which will get you 10% off your next Badfish purchase. It's been brought to my attention that a few people have mentioned the podcast and mentioned that they heard that Badfish was the official carrier of all Three Eyed Fish merchandise, but haven't been using the podcasts promo code - gotta use the code to get the discount! . The second is that I will be doing a Badfish giveaway on my instagram. So be sure to follow the podcast's instagram (@hellosppodcast) if you haven't already. I also talk about the cover of the April issue of the San Pedro Today magazine as it features our local icon the Three Eyed Fish, an image that Badfish owns the exclusive copyright to. This cover story features an interview with the original artist of the Three Eyed Fish and his motivation to paint it. Carolina was born and raised in San Pedro and has been a teacher within the community for many years. After her daughter gave birth to Roko and Elliot, she decided to start a baby boutique named Rok 'n' Ell. Carolina and her husband now own the charming boutique located at beautiful Weymouth Corners. She shares how overwhelming it was at first to own a business but her and her husband quickly got the hang of it and have been consistently growing in business ever since. Carolina also shares what it was like growing up in San Pedro. Carolina on growing up in San Pedro: "'Oh it was wonderful. As a child I loved San Pedro. I remember traveling around town on the bus, my mother didn't drive, both my parents were from Italy, and Beacon Street at that time was pretty bad and I remember specifically telling my mother that when I grew up I was going to be the mayor of San Pedro and clean things up." We do discuss some of her shop's biggest challenges and one of them is online shopping. She had initiated an effort to sell online and actually made it available for one year but after extremely low online sales she decided to pull back her online inventory. It's apparent that she has strong feelings about local consumer's pride in shopping at major online retailers and she compares it to leaving trash on the floor. What I took from this comparison was that she sees online shopping as a direct effort to not take care of our "home" or community. I share my concerns in this matter as well. We address these issues and talk about what it could mean for our small business community. Carolina describing the "essence" of San Pedro : "'It's a working class community. It's not just a bedroom community. People don't all work in LA, they live and work here, you know, because of the port and the waterfront. And that started with the fishermen and the canneries... San Pedro is unique in that, in that we live and work here, so I'm very proud of that." Carolina shares her excitement for the changes coming to the waterfront and may even consider starting something in the downtown area.

Live From the House of Blues tour with Badfish. An excerpt from the Full Service Diary about the shows: TourSaw with Scotty Don't and Badfish There have been many an amazing tour in the history of this here band. There was, of course, Toursaw I; "the first" always has a special place in the heart. The Takeover Tour, too, was memorable for obvious reasons. But this last tour definitely ranks high. Our friends Scotty Don't (who moonlight as "Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime") invited us to play 4 dates with them in Baton Rouge, Dallas, Houston, and Austin. As the following videos will attest, one of the reasons these shows were exciting was because of the venues and the large crowds (House Of Blues in Dallas and Houston, Varsity Theater in Baton Rouge, and Emo's in Austin). But perhaps more importantly, the shows will forever go down in history because of the bond we formed with a band who proved to be, by the end of our little run with them (they continue on for months after last Sunday's Austin date,) our kindred spirits. They were into playing soccer, they had a trumpet player who was kind enough to sit in with us for "Trumpets," their merch dude was one of the kindest, funniest people we've ever met, their drummer greeted us at our first show with them in Baton Rouge holding an ice bag to his ridiculously swollen black eye (something about defending Pat Benatar against an angry drunk bully after their show in New Orleans?), their singer pins a photo of The Fonz on his amp and skates around on his ripstick inside the venue before shows, and their bass player repeatedly challenged Bonesaw's manhood with competitive banter on and off the field. And not only this, but they work harder than any band we've seen and they play their hearts out every single night. So, many thanks to these guys for the opportunity to play those shows with them. We made a boatload of new fans and we are greatful for that chance.

Badfish is a tribute band dedicated to playing the music of Sublime. The group is named after a song appearing on the album 40 Oz. to Freedom Formed in 2001 at the University of Rhode Island, the group's members, who were computer science majors, began playing local Rhode Island clubs and quickly began selling out shows.[1] They continued touring the East Coast and Midwest of the U.S., becoming popular on college campuses among Sublime fans who never were able to see the band due to Bradley Nowell's 1996 death.[2][3][4] Since then the group has done multiple national tours per year.[5] In 2008, the band was nominated for Best Tribute Act in the Boston Music Awards.[6] The group played 152 shows across the United States in 2006, selling just under 100,000 tickets and grossing $1.4 million in sales.[1] Members of the group also play in a non-tribute act called Scotty Don't, which sometimes acts as the opener at Badfish shows.
