In this episode of INSIGHTS, I am joined by Dis Fig, who's genre bending blend of industrial, dub and ambient has formed an impressive catalogue of solo and collaborative efforts, notably her 2019 debut album ‘PURGE', as well as 'In Blue' with dub legend The Bug and her staggering new album entitled ‘Orchards of a Futile Heaven', which sees her monumental vocals and power electronics combine with the crushing doom of formidable avant-metal giants The Body. It gives me great pleasure to welcome Felicia Chen to the show!Over the course of this interview, Felicia discusses formative experiences and influences ranging from karaoke, choir and MTV to Canto-Pop, Rancid and Destiny's Child, as well as discovering the club music that would go on to influence her DJ style including Digital Mysticz, footwork and Jersey club and layering genres to create new forms. Next, Felicia reflects on the making of her debut album ‘PURGE' five years on, working with The Bug and the making of ‘In Blue', collaborating remotely and discovering a sound together, before discussing collaborating with The Body, the making of 'Orchards Of A Futile Heaven', bringing her vocals to the forefront and the album's themes and imagery, concluding by highlighting some favourite music selections, future projects and forthcoming tour.Clips of ‘To Walk a Higher Path' and ‘Orchards of a Futile Heaven ' by Dis Fig & The Body from the album ‘Orchards of a Futile Heaven on Thrill Jockey Records are used in this podcast.SUPPORT DIS FIG:Bandcamp: https://disfig.bandcamp.com/album/orchards-of-a-futile-heavenInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dis_fig/ Buy Music Club: https://www.buymusic.club/list/awakeallhours-insights-033-dis-fig SUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS: Patreon: www.patreon.com/awakeallhours Instagram: www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/
This week's Talkhouse Podcast came together in a fun way, when a new-ish artist referenced the work of a more established band in a song, and the head of a legendary indie label thought they should meet. That sounds complicated, but don't worry I'll explain. Our guests are Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew. Kevin Drew is best known as one of the founders of Broken Social Scene, the influential Canadian band slash collective that's been around for 25 years now. The band has amassed an incredible catalog that broke out with 2002's unstoppable You Forgot It In People but all of its records reward a deep dive—as does the solo work that Drew has also released over the years. Last year he released a moving record about loss—among other things—called Aging, and as you'll hear in this conversation, he hopes to reignite Broken Social Scene for one more run that includes some of the collective's members that have gone on to big careers outside the band, like Leslie Feist and Emily Haines. I personally would love to see it. I imagine the other half of today's conversation, Claire Rousay, would as well. The impetus for this conversation is her song “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background.” In case you're not familiar with the aforementioned Broken Social Scene album, You Forgot It In People, it features a song called “Lover's Spit.” Rousay's song is from her fantastic new album Sentiment, just out on Thrill Jockey Records, on which she leans more into song structure than on past releases, which have been tagged “emo ambient.” Rousay uses found sounds, hazy atmospherics, and Auto-Tune to tell sometimes crushingly depressing stories in a way that somehow turns out gorgeous. Check out “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background” right here. This conversation ended up happening because Thrill Jockey's Bettina Richards reached out to Drew to let him know about the nod on Rousay's song, and the rest is history: As you'll hear, they connected pretty quickly, and they chat about blackout curtains, influential record labels, the death of Kevin's mom, and what Drew dubs Claire's “beautiful, vulnerable, shadowy womb/sleeping bag of a record.” Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:29 - Start of the chat 4:49 - On Claire's unusual introduction to Broken Social Scene's music 9:24 - On music as a lifesaver 13:47 - On the future of Broken Social Scene 17:35 - On being jealous of your peers 21:42 - On blackout curtains 31:27 - On signing to Thrill Jockey 36:46 - On negativity and career expectations Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew for chatting. Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. Our guest today on the show Glenn Jones, who joins us to discuss his new album Vade Mecum, out now on Thrill Jockey Records, as well as touch on and illuminate the complicated legacy of John Fahey. Both solo and as a member of Cul-de-Sac, Jones has been a force of creative energy in the world of solo acoustic guitar, guitar soli, or American Primitive music, a term we discuss in this chat. Before we get into the talk, we want to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to Steve Lowenthal, for his great book on Fahey, Dance of Death: The Life of John Fahey, American Guitarist. Though we mostly focus on Jones' own work—and the new album is a fantastic example of what makes him such an enduring presence in the avant-guitar field—we do at one point shift into discussion of the complicated relationship Fahey had with race. Steve's book serves as a great resource. We also want to thank Glenn for the candidness and honesty he brought to our talk. I want to thank you for listening to Transmissions. We're a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Check out Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon to support the show.
Our guest today is just as much of a singular and influential artist as the featured album. Thalia Zedek has a lot to share at the moment. Her first solo release is getting the full treatment for it's 20th anniversary. Been Here and Gone is being reissued by Thrill Jockey Records on vinyl for the first time and in limited edition gold vinyl too! Get that here: https://thaliazedek.bandcamp.com/album/been-here-and-gone-20th-anniversary-reissue Also the Thalia Zedek Band has a new record coming out. Perfect Vision is available for pre-order now here: https://thaliazedek.bandcamp.com/album/perfect-vision And something I don't have a link for that Thalia shared with me is that Come will have a 45 of Gun Club covers available through Chunklet Industries in early June, as well as some Come reissues coming out on Fire Records in October. Mark your calendars, or follow us on Social media and we'll get you the updates. psychicstatic.net Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut wrote and performed the theme song.

We sit down with Zach Weil, guitarist and vocalist of Chicago’s most difficult to characterize heavy trio Oozing Wound. We touch on the bands formation, where DIY ethics took them and their relationship with Thrill Jockey Records, where they sit with new material and why they shouldn’t be categorized with Slayer. Oozing Wound’s music is difficult to define, and we

The owls are not what they seem. In fact, maybe nothing is exactly what it seems. Welcome to the January 2019 edition of Aquarium Drunkard’s Transmissions podcast, our monthly audio digest of the strange, fascinating, and out there. In this episode— the first of the new year—your hosts Justin Gage and Jason P. Woodbury pay a visit to the Washington town of Twin Peaks, with a conversation about the cult TV show, its many mysteries, and its 2017 revival. Then, a talk with guitarist North Carolina-based guitarist Sarah Louise, whose beguiling new record, Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars, will see release this week via Thrill Jockey Records. To close, Desert Oracle creator and editor Ken Layne joins us to discuss the cosmic vastness of the desert, and of course, Oumuamua, the first interstellar object detected passing through the Solar System. Does it signal the arrival of some faraway intelligence? What does it say about the unknown? And more pressingly, what does it say about our collective imagination? When David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks premiered on CBS in 1990, there was nothing like it. The saga, which veered from comedy to psychic drama to cosmic horror, sometimes within the same episode, hailed the beginning of an era during which television would become a format fit for auteurs. While it only ran two seasons—plus a film, Fire Walk With Me, released in 1992—the mythology it established proved an enduring one, the subject of spinoff books, audio tapes, and discussion in secretive corners of the newly established World Wide Web. In 2017, Lynch and Frost finally made another trip with Twin Peaks: The Return, a meditation on age, trauma, and possibilities. Here, co-hosts Justin Gage and Jason P. Woodbury discuss the show’s influence and impact, on the world of television, fiction, and music. On January 25, guitarist Sarah Louise returns with Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars, a spectral collection of electronically-treated guitar music. Louise is rooted in Appalachian roots music, but her approach is not restrained, folding in elements of spiritual jazz and new age. Most of all, her music is situated in the concept of wilderness. These are ecological compositions, born from the soil and inspired by the flora and fauna of North Carolina. Nature is really the one continuous thread in my life,” Louise says, and with this record, “[I’ve realized] this is my life’s purpose: I want to share the possibility of connection with the Earth with other people.” Just as 2018 ended, author Ken Layne published an article on Popula titled “Happy Year of the Alien Invasion!” Layne is the host of Desert Oracle, a weekly radio show and podcast as well as a pocket-sized field guide to the American Southwest. He’s interested in the idea of extraterrestrial life. We hooked up with him to discuss Oumuamua, the subject of his article as well as the idea of the desert as sort of a spiritual beacon for seekers and people interested in the unknown. “Lawrence of Arabia had this great answer for the inevitable question you’d get in England, you know: ‘Why do you love the desert so much?’ His answer was, ‘Because it’s clean.’ It’s a very heavy answer,” Layne says. “It’s this kind of stark landscape that you can project yourself upon…” Episode Playlist: William Tyler – Four Corners ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Dance of the Dream Man ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Montage from Fire Walk With Me ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Freshly Squeezed ++ Julee Cruise – Floating ++ Julee Cruise – Mysteries of Love ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Night Life in Twin Peaks (excerpt) ++ Angelo Badalamenti – The Pink Room ++ Julee Cruise -Into the Night ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Audrey’s Dance ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Don’t Do Anything I Wouldn’t Do ++ Angelo Badalamenti — Love Theme From Twin Peaks ++ Angelo Badalamenti – Laura Palmer’s Theme ++ Thought Gang – The Black Dog Runs at Night ++ Sarah Louise – Daybreak ++ Sarah Louise -Journey in Satchidananda (Alice Coltrane) ++ Sarah Louise – Floating Rhododendron ++ Sarah Louise – Late Night Healing Choir ++ Alice Coltrane – Hara Sira ++ Sarah Louise – R Mountain ++ Mary Lattimore – Remember When Your Mom Wore Big Glasses and Played Her Harp
And we’re back. Welcome to the May edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast, our recurring series of conversations and audio esoterica. On this program, we’re joined by singer/songwriter Gillian Welch. Along with her partner David Rawlings, Welch has tapped into the wellspring of American vernacular music. Her albums — including 2001’s Time (The Revelator) and 2011’s The Harrow & the Harvest — are part of one of the strongest bodies of work in modern folk music. Welch is about to hit the road with Rawlings, embarking on a series of “An Evening With” dates June through October, and this summer sees the vinyl reissue of her 2003 LP Soul Journey. We spoke to Welch via phone about her attention to the long player, album-length statement. Then, we have a review of the release by the Shinya Fukumori Trio, For 2 Akis by writer and head of Footfalls Records Leah Toth; released by the stalwart ECM label, the new release unites players from France, Germany, and Japan for a quiet, but subtly immersive new album, produced by ECM head Manfred Eicher. And we close out this month’s episode with a conversation recorded live backstage with Marisa Anderson. She’s one of the most engaging solo guitarists in the field today, blending blues, folk, and country forms into political and personal statements. On June 15, she releases her debut for Thrill Jockey Records, Cloud Corner. A meditative and peaceful record, the record serves as a respite from the constant noise of our modern times. We spoke with Anderson about the need for those kinds of musical spaces, the influence of science fiction on her work, and her subversive reinterpretation of traditional and public domain music.

HOUSECLEANING/LISTENER QUESTION First race of the season is in the books “John and Kyle, Great to hear a new episode guys! My favorite show to date for sure. A question I've had for you guys that I've been wanting to ask for a while is whether or not either of you actually listen to music when putting in miles on the bike? I definitely refrain from plugging in when riding singletrack most importantly due to just being aware of other trail users, but when it comes to gravel or road riding, are tunes a necessary component for your training? Finally, thanks for the tip on Achilles! Super sweet stuff. Take care guys. Grant” RECORD REVIEW World Be Free – 'The AntiCircle' Released: February 5 2016 – Revelation Records World Be Free's story began in the fall of 2014, when Scott Vogel (Terror, Buried Alive), Joe Garlipp (Envy), Andrew Kline (Strife), and Sammy Siegler (Judge, CIV, Rival Schools) met monthly to write classicinfluenced, melodic and positive hardcore. All of this developed without a label, budget or any mention to the outside world. When Siegler scored some recording time at Hurley, they flew in Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, CIV) to cover on bass and hustled into the studio. Vogel and Terror bandmate Nick Jett then tracked vocals at Jett's studio, passing the ball to Walter Schreifels (Rival Schools, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) for one final guest spot. With their album finished and its release fast approaching, Top 5 – Primal Reaction Records. Something about these 5 records speaks to that dark place in your soul. Pure raw aggression and power.. UNBROKEN – Life Love Regret – 1994 New Age Records Life. Love. Regret. is everything that hardcore is. It is the heart, the soul, the sound, and the attitude. The music is loud and in your face, but most importantly, passion is put at the top. This album is a monument by a monolithic band. From the crushing riff and sinister notes at the beginning of "D4" to the ending feedback in the nine minute "Curtain." Breather Resist – Only In The Morning – March 25, 2003 Deathwish Inc Breather Resist formed in 2002 and recorded 8 songs, 4 of which were on handmade demos. These 8 songs became their first EP, "Only in the Morning", released on Deathwish, Inc.. Their first LP, Charmer, was released on Jade Tree Records in October 2004, having been produced by Kurt Ballou. In December 2005, lead singer Steve Sidoni left the group; Buried Alive – Death Of Your Perfect World – April 20, 1999 Victory Produced by Steve Evetts at Trax East Studios. It is the band's only album with Jesse Muscato on drums. CURSED – I – February 23, 2005 Deathwish Inc Formed in 2001 a year after the breakup of The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead. Known for their trademark nihilistic and dystopian lyrical themes, stark classic horror imagery and loud, abrasive live shows. Integrity – Those Who Fear Tomorrow – 1991 Overkill Records Integrity's For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is a hardcore juggernaut that has lurked in infamy for over 15 years. Recorded in 1991, For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is often credited as on of the first true metalcore" albums. While hardcore crossover bands like the Cro Mags and Corrosion of Conformity had existed before Integrity, few were prepared for the world Integrity brought to life with their debut album. FTWFT's razor sharp metallic edges, driving hardcore verses, and gloomy breakdowns set a stage for one of hardcore's most messianic and charismatic front men: Dwid Hellion. The album has been issued in close to 10 different editions and formats. It has never received proper distribution or promotion, but it has survived: a truly bastardized child of hardcore, metal, and a darkness of the soul. After having her fill of the major-label A&R game, Bettina Richards started Thrill Jockey Records in 1992 from her apartment. It's now one of the world's most respected indie labels. She discusses how she made it happen.
Cécile Schott, a musician and composer originally from outside of Paris, has been making music since she was 15 and she started releasing albums under the name Colleen at age 27. She has 6 full albums and 1 EP in total, her most recent album being Captain of None, released in April of 2015 with Thrill Jockey Records. Our talented sound designer and friend, Billy Wirasnik, has been a long time fan of Colleen. Billy calls her work, “The music a beautiful brain would make if you could plug a quarter inch jack into it.” Cécile uses repetitive loops of old scratchy recordings, instruments like the glockenspiel, guitar, viola da gamba, bells, chimes and a variety of music boxes to make up the sounds in different combinations across her albums, building mysterious atmospheres that can be dark and playful at the same time. Colleen tracks differ from album to album, but are all unified by a tenderness, a curiosity, and a will to experiment and play, always taking you somewhere you weren’t expecting. In this episode, we talk about falling in and out of love with music, taking time to pursue other creative outlets, an artistic response to hardships and tragedy, and really, just living a simple, happy life.
