It's the episode where **Andrew Culture** and Dr. Sam somehow make an entire hour of toilet chat, dodgy sampling, and musical rambling sound like a work of art. From unicorn stools (Google at your own risk) to squatting like a Baltic legend, the pair venture into a shambolic journey across music that sampled _what?!_ Expect the unexpected as they break down: - **Bodsore** sounding like a black metal fever dream. - A British punk banger sampling Windows' startup sound. - _Tricky's_ expensive 90s sampling wizardry when only the four richest kings of Europe owned a sampler. - **DJ Shadow**, pre-_Endtroducing_, and _Prodigy's_ cheeky meow-powered rave anthem. - A bizarre mashup of _Biggie Smalls_ and Thomas the Tank Engine. Oh, and Andrew once owned a wardrobe from a public toilet. As you do. So get ready to question your music taste, learn more about squat angles than you ever asked for, and celebrate the ridiculousness of samples that make you yell: _They sampled WHAT?!_ ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - Bedsore - A Colossus, an Elephant, a Winged Horse, the Dragon Rendezvous (7.30) #### Andrew's Riff - Man/Woman/Chainsaw - The Boss (0:51) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. DJ Shadow, aka Josh Davis, was and is a famous crate digger. He could spend hours in a record store collecting obscure albums, looking for interesting melodies and beats to sample and mix together on his turntables. And in 1996, Josh used this encyclopedic knowledge of music to create the first ever completely sampled album as DJ Shadow. The album, "Endtroducing", became one of the most important albums in experimental hip-hop, and you can still hear its influence today. In this episode, Guy talks with Josh about how he discovered hip-hop on his college radio station, his love of putting people on to new music, and how curiosity became his biggest superpower.Links from the show:Endtroducing - DJ ShadowAction Adventure - DJ ShadowLicensed to Ill - The Beastie BoysPlanet Rock - Afrika BambaataaJam-Master-Jay - RUN DMCOne for the Treble - Davy DMXSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

De “Building Stem with a grain of salt” à “Midnight in a Perfect World” en passant par “Organ Donor” ou “What does your soul look like?”, DJ Shadow déclare son amour à l'esprit du hip hop et lui offre une nouvelle ouverture d'esprit. Crédits  Générique : Dr Alban "Sing Hallelujah" Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Best Foot Forward”, “Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt”, “The Number Song”, “Changeling”, “What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)”, “Untitled”, “Stem/Long Stem”, “Mutual Slump”, “Organ Donor”, “Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96”, “Midnight In A Perfect World”, “Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain”, “What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 - Blue Sky Revisit)”. This week's show covers new music from UK poet and rapper Kae Tempest, pairing up with Brockhampton alum Kevin Abstract, a new synthpop banger from Mitski, a soundtrack cut from Little Barrie and Tony Coote, and Cat Power's devastating cover of the jazz standard “I'll Be Seeing You,” originally made famous by Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday who both covered it in 1944.     For the archive pick this week, Mark selects a choice track from DJ Shadow's debut album, Endtroducing….., which came out in 1996 but still sounds fresh and extra-cool. (The blend of scratching and sampling woven together is superb.)  The song in question is entitled, “Midnight in a Perfect World.”Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link.  (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Very special episode of Dad Bod Rap Pod this week, the first on our new home, Open Mike Eagle's Stony Island Audio which is part of the illustrious Starburns Industries umbrella. We're excited about this new chapter for the show and to celebrate we switched a few things up. We have new artwork by Arthur Banach, a new introduction by the legendary hip-hop announcer Don Newkirk, and we have a great interview with a major artist whose music has been the soundtrack of our lives. We were lucky to speak this week with DJ Shadow, the revolutionary producer who has worked with elite MCs, collaborated with the top DJs in the game, and helped usher in a new wave of appreciation for instrumental hip-hop in the mid-90's with his stellar debut album Endtroducing.... We are huge fans of Shadow's work and this interview is an in-depth look into his mindset in 2020, a look back at some standout moments form past albums, and a showcase for his thoughtful, almost poetic way of answering questions. We're very proud of the interview and hope you enjoy it.

Brendan in a man of many tastes of musical styles. With that being said, the likelihood of him creating a project of any genre is completely possible. His latest project, Belll, is an ambient, sample based hiphop album akin to that of Dj Shadow's Endtroducing. Could he have gone the route of hard edged prog rock like that of Ebu Gogo? Sure. Jazzy funk rock like Gruvis Malt? Of course. This is just the latest chapter in his ever evolving progression and it's great. Find it on all streaming platforms. EP 08. Funk and Hip hop this episode… Welcome to episode 8 of Underground House, Funk n Techno podcast, I'm Pete Burquette, this is Underground Funk. Got 23 funk and hip hop tunes, of which there are 10 edits, 4 remixes and 1 unreleased track. All new spins … Them Changes - Thundercat (Brainfeeder) (DE Edit) Do It - Beastie Boys (Grand Royal Records) Chilled. by Speechless (Speak less, Listen More) In Flux by DJ Shadow (Island Records) (DE Edit) - Released before ”Endtroducing” was released, set the template. I'm playing an edited down, sped up version of it, as the original is 12 minute long epic, more for home listening and space travel, and is really good. Stepping Into Tomorrow - Madlib (Blue Note Records) (DE Edit) - classic ”Shades of Blue” album. I've done a DJ edit of it here, but the song itself is a reworking of Donald Byrd's 1974 song of the same name. Erykahs Gun - DJ Harrison Stashboxxx album on Ropedope label Just Kissed My Baby - The Meters (DE Remix) Rhino, Reprise, Warner Records (and other record labels too). It's the Meters, so it's like trying to find a source for the Bible … in this case, of FUNK Cabaceira BY FloFilz (Melting Pot Records) While You Doooo - Teebs (Brainfeeder records) Vibrations - Al Dobson Jr. (Rhythm Section International) Break - Jurassic 5 (Interscope Records) From the classic Power In Numbers album You've Heard - Daedelus (All City Records from Dublin, Ireland) (DE Edit) Hell Yes - Beck (Interscope) on Guero album (DE Edit) Wider, Git Hub - Ratgrave who are Max Graef, Julius Conrad (Apron Records) Do It (till you're satisfied) by B.T. Express (Roadshow Records) (DE Remix) Beatless Reunion - Diplomatic Enjoy Unreleased track by me. Actually made to have a beatless start and end for an earlier version of this mix, like a mix tool, but ended up doing the mix differently but still keeping the track in B Boys Will B Boys - Black Star (Rawkus Entertainment) (DE Edit). Bubble and Slide (Nightmares on Wax Remix of Sabres of Paradise (DE Edit) on Warp Records Jazz 104 by Max Graef (Tartelet Records) (DE Edit). Jazz 104 is a reworking of ”Popular Instruments” by Paul Parrish and James Lansing sound, a cool find, where I think this is the drummer of Bread on a hi-fidelity system demonstration record, which I think used to come with the 1st component home stereo systems! I combined both of these tracks so there's a drum intro, so that I could then DJ blend. Party Pts 1 and 2 - Midnight Movers from their Follow The Wind album on Buddah Records. This is a lost classic where no version exists of this on Spotify and no good vinyl copies exist anywhere, so I was lucky to be able to pull a remix out of it by playing a new bass, drum parts, etc while keeping as much of the original as possible. I almost gave up, but I think has ended up being the edit or remix I like the most. Beep It by Japanese legend Cornelius from his/their 'Sensuous' album (DE Edit). I saw these play live in Sydney, Australia, a while back, they were excellent. Power to the People - Public Enemy (Def Jam Recordings) (DE Remix) This is basically the instrumental version of Power to the People with extra percussion added in, different mastering, it's kind of a remix. The original is on the deluxe version of Fear of a Black Planet, which if you like Public Enemy has lots of little intrumentals and alternative versions, all of which stand well on their own right because of the Bomb Squad's, PE's production team, ”wall of samples” production approach. Songs in this mix (or ones like them) can be found in the ”Underground Funk (Afro soul, 70s, beats, breaks, stones Throw)” playlist on Spotify, Youtube, Soundcloud and Deezer Cover is Mr. Sly Stone More shenanigans and related treats can be found at: Underground Funk on Spotify Diplomatic Enjoy Soundcloud Instagram Facebook Twitter

You might not think that telling people they suck at producing is a good way to win over fans, but Underbelly has managed to take that approach and build a community of eager producers around it. His YouTube channel, You Suck at Producing, is growing at a hyper pace thanks to his powerful lessons and hilarious sense of humor. Underbelly packages important lessons in concise videos laced with a lighthearted attitude and dry humor. As a fan of his work, I had a great time talking with Underbelly. He's a classically trained pianist and an adept producer. During our conversation, Underbelly discusses his approach to his work as a teacher and a musician. He highlights the importance of not taking ourselves so seriously as artists, but being serious about discipline and producing quality music. I found him especially nice to talk to because he has a balance of deep knowledge and skill, but is open and honest about his own struggles as a musician. Enjoy! In 1996, Josh Davis, aka DJ Shadow, released his first album, Endtroducing. It’s been hailed pretty much universally as one of the best albums of the 90s, and Time Magazine included in its top 100 Albums of all time. It changed hip-hop and electronic music, and helped define the trip-hop genre. Now, for the 20th anniversary of the release, DJ Shadow breaks down the song "Mutual Slump." songexploder.net/dj-shadow
