Adam Fravel, convicted of murdering Winona resident Madeline Kingsbury, has begun the appeal process, challenging his conviction and life sentence without parole. Court documents filed by Chief Appellate Public Defender Cathryn Middlebrook confirmed that the Minnesota State Public Defender's Office will represent Fravel in his appeal. On Monday, Judge Nancy Buytendorp approved Middlebrook's request to access sealed and confidential documents related to the case. Fravel's decision to appeal comes as no surprise. During his sentencing hearing in December, defense attorney Zachary Bauer signaled Fravel's intent to challenge the outcome, echoing Fravel's own claims of innocence. "I never caused harm to Maddi and I am innocent," Fravel declared at the hearing. The appeal follows Fravel's November conviction on four counts of murder, including two first-degree and two second-degree charges. The case captivated public attention after Kingsbury, a mother of two, vanished on March 31, 2023. Her remains were discovered more than two months later, bound in a ditch. Fravel, the father of her children, was arrested the same day her body was found. Testimonies during the trial painted a troubling picture of Fravel and Kingsbury's relationship. Friends and family members described a pattern of abuse, including allegations that Fravel threatened Kingsbury with harm, warning she might "end up like Gabby Petito," a woman whose high-profile murder by her fiancé in 2021 drew national attention. Fravel is currently held at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. The public and Kingsbury's loved ones continue to monitor developments as the appeal process unfolds. #MadelineKingsbury #AdamFravel #TrueCrime #JusticeForMaddi #MinnesotaNews #DomesticAbuse #MurderAppeal Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Adam Fravel Sentenced to Life in Prison for the Murder of Madeline Kingsbury Adam Fravel has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for the premeditated murder of 26-year-old Madeline Kingsbury, his former partner and the mother of his two children. The sentencing was handed down in a Winona County courtroom after an emotional hearing in which Kingsbury's family described the immense grief caused by her death. Fravel was found guilty last month of first-degree murder and other charges following a trial that shed light on his troubled relationship with Kingsbury. Under Minnesota state law, his life sentence was mandatory. Madeline Kingsbury, a beloved mother, daughter, and sister, disappeared on March 31, 2023, after she and Fravel dropped their children off at daycare. Her disappearance drew national attention and led to a massive search that lasted over two months. Eventually, her remains were discovered in a culvert near Fravel's parents' home in Fillmore County. A medical examiner confirmed she died of homicidal violence. Court documents revealed that Fravel and Kingsbury were separating and preparing to move out of their shared Winona home in the days leading up to her death. Investigators tied key evidence, including a bed sheet and Gorilla tape used to wrap Kingsbury's body, to the home where she and Fravel lived. At the sentencing, Kingsbury's family shared heartbreaking victim impact statements, painting a picture of a life tragically stolen and the profound impact on her children and loved ones. Krista Hultgren, Madeline's mother, spoke about the abuse her daughter endured at Fravel's hands and the irreplaceable void left by her death. “[Fravel] could've treated Madeline like the extraordinary person she was, but he didn't,” Hultgren said. “He could've given Maddi and the kids a good life, but he didn't. Instead, he made her feel unlovable and snuffed the life out of her.” Hultgren reflected on Madeline's youngest child, who was barely two years old and had just weaned from nursing when her mother disappeared. Her older daughter had celebrated her fifth birthday only days before. “I will never understand why Adam took Madeline's life. There will never be an answer to satisfy that question,” Hultgren said, adding that while Fravel's sentence brings no joy, it is “just.” Madeline's father, David Kingsbury, who now raises her children alongside his wife Cathy, shared the daily pain of losing his daughter. “Each morning, my mind painfully adjusts to the realization that it's not just a bad dream,” he said. “Madeline is still really dead and Adam Fravel killed her.” Fravel was given the opportunity to speak before his sentence was imposed but continued to maintain his innocence. “I never caused harm to Maddi and I am innocent. Thank you,” he stated. Despite his denial, family members made it clear that Fravel's actions had left them permanently scarred. Megan Kingsbury Hancock, Madeline's sister, addressed Fravel directly, vowing that her family would carry on Madeline's memory. “Madeline will forever be remembered and loved,” Hancock said. “Her children will know who their mother is and was. They will also know, when they are old enough, what happened to her and that their father is the monster who took her from them.” Kingsbury's light, Hancock added, “will never be extinguished.” The sentencing concludes a tragic case that has left an unshakable mark on Kingsbury's family and community. #MadelineKingsbury #JusticeForMaddi #AdamFravel #MinnesotaNews #TrueCrime #FamilyJustice #LifeSentence Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? A double murder trial in a small town in Indiana ends a seven-year saga. A four-count murder trial in Minnesota concludes a push for justice for a 26-year-old mother of two. Plus, Bryan Kohberger is back in court with his life on the line and Keith Morrison remembers a story he's covered from the start.
In a trial that gripped national attention, Adam Fravel has been convicted on four counts for the murder of Madeline Kingsbury, the mother of his two children. The three-week trial concluded with a packed courtroom in Mankato as the jury foreperson read the guilty verdicts. The case, which was relocated from Winona due to widespread public interest, has stirred emotions in both the Kingsbury and Fravel families. The jury found Fravel guilty of premeditated first-degree murder, first-degree murder with a past pattern of domestic abuse, second-degree murder with intent, and second-degree murder while committing a felony. Madeline Kingsbury, 26, disappeared at the end of March 2023, leading to a large-scale search that lasted four months. Her body was eventually discovered in a culvert near Fravel's parents' home in Fillmore County, southeast Minnesota. This discovery prompted Fravel's arrest and set the stage for an emotional trial. David Kingsbury, Madeline's father, addressed reporters outside the courthouse after the verdict. “Fravel can't be punished enough,” he said. “We've lost a daughter, mother, aunt, sister. Children are scarred ... not just Eliana and Noah, but the children in our extended family wonder why. His life is wasted, ruin and devastation to two families. There's no joy here, but we're glad at the result.” His words highlighted the pain the Kingsbury family continues to endure, even as they feel a sense of relief from the guilty verdict. Members of both families were present for the reading of the verdict, and the atmosphere in the courtroom was tense. Some relatives from Fravel's side broke into tears as the reality of the conviction sank in, emphasizing the deep and enduring emotional impact of the case. Winona Police Chief Tom Williams, who played a crucial role in the search for Kingsbury, also shared his thoughts following the trial. “To say that this was a huge undertaking would be a great understatement,” Williams noted. “The number of man hours that went into this by law enforcement from many different counties, state agencies and we cannot be forgetful of the number of citizens that also stepped up to the plate to help us with this investigation.” The Kingsbury family's pain remains fresh, but they acknowledge the tireless efforts of law enforcement and community members who assisted in the months-long search. The conviction marks a significant step in their journey toward closure, though the emotional scars are still raw. Adam Fravel will face sentencing on December 17 in Winona, where he could receive a life sentence for his crimes. As the legal process nears its conclusion, both families must confront the aftermath of the tragedy that has devastated their lives. #JusticeForMaddie #AdamFravel #MadelineKingsbury #MurderTrial #Winona #DomesticViolence #CommunitySupport Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Ah, Friday. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! We kicked things off with an update on the Adam Fravel trial, more news about the closing of the Leinie's brewery in Chippewa Falls, a school in Kenosha that stopped a kid from possibly committing a shooting, some research monkeys on the loose in South Carolina, and the "You've Got Mail" guy passing away. Recapped last night's wild start to week 10 in the NFL, and talked about the Bucks finally getting a win after losing six straight. Let you know what's in theaters this weekend and got a racing report from Doc before this weekend's NASCAR championship race. Cool story about a guy who won tickets to see Taylor Swift on a scratch-off game, and a couple doing some remodeling in their home discovered a bunch of stuffed animals in the walls and decided to donate them rather than throwing them away. Today is "National Cappuccino Day", so fuel up for the weekend with some espresso & steamed milk! Have you heard about the "4B" movement? Essentially, some women are refusing to have sex for the next four years while Trump is back in office. We also played a round of "Who'd You Rather?"…asking the question: What would be worse to find under your bed: A DEAD person…or a LIVING person? And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaMan who didn't want to pay for his lapdance, Peanut the Squirrel's owner is apparently on OnlyFans is getting accused of using Peanut's death to promote his account, and a government official in Equitorial Guinea who apparently banged EVERYONE. More than a year after the tragic disappearance and murder of Madeline Kingsbury, her former boyfriend, Adam Fravel, is scheduled to appear in court next month for pre-trial hearings. Fravel faces second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of Kingsbury, a 26-year-old mother of two from Winona, Minnesota. Kingsbury was first reported missing at the end of March 2023, sparking an extensive search effort across the Winona area. For weeks, community members, law enforcement, and volunteers scoured the region, hoping to find any trace of her. The search came to a heartbreaking conclusion in June when Kingsbury's remains were discovered in a concealed location along Highway 43 in Fillmore County, just a short drive from Fravel's home. Police in Minnesota identified the remains as those of Madeline Kingsbury shortly after their discovery. The tragic news was followed by the arrest of Adam Fravel, who had been under suspicion since the investigation began. Fravel, 29, was taken into custody "on probable cause in connection to her disappearance," according to the Winona Police Department. The upcoming pre-trial hearings are scheduled for September 3-4, and will likely take place in Winona, unless a new trial location is announced beforehand. Due to the widespread media attention surrounding the case, a judge has already agreed to move the trial out of Winona County, ensuring a fair legal process. As the case moves forward, Kingsbury's family has expressed a mix of sorrow and relief. In a statement released following the discovery of her body, Kingsbury's sister, Megan, shared the family's sentiments. "We're relieved that Madeline has been found after months of intensive searching and grateful for the extraordinary efforts by law enforcement, other first responders, and volunteers," she said. "We're certain that the correct person has been arrested, will be appropriately charged, and convicted of his crimes. Things are moving in the right direction there, and we look forward to getting justice for Madeline." The investigation into Kingsbury's disappearance revealed that her body had been carefully concealed in a wooded area off a gravel road, an area that had been previously searched but not thoroughly enough to uncover her remains initially. "There were efforts made to conceal the location of the body," Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge noted during a press conference, emphasizing the challenges investigators faced in locating Kingsbury. Winona Police Chief Tom Williams also addressed the discovery, expressing his condolences to Kingsbury's family. "While this discovery is not what we were hoping for, we are thankful to be able to bring Maddi home to her family," Williams said. The case has drawn significant public interest, not only because of the tragic loss of a young mother but also due to the extensive community involvement in the search for her. Thousands of searchers assisted law enforcement over the more than two months that Kingsbury was missing, highlighting the deep impact her disappearance had on the local community. As the legal proceedings continue, all eyes will be on the upcoming pre-trial hearings and the eventual trial of Adam Fravel. The hearings will provide an opportunity for the defense and prosecution to present their cases as the court begins the process of determining Fravel's guilt or innocence in the murder of Madeline Kingsbury. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating impact it can have on families and communities. As Kingsbury's family and the community of Winona await justice, the memory of Madeline Kingsbury will undoubtedly continue to resonate with those who were touched by her story. Attorneys representing Adam Fravel, the man accused of the murder of Madeline Kingsbury, have filed a series of motions in an effort to change the course of the case and secure a dismissal of the most serious charge he faces. Fravel is currently charged with first-degree and second-degree murder for Kingsbury's death, a case that has garnered extensive media attention.* Fravel's defense team is determined to shift the legal proceedings due to their concerns about the case's high-profile nature. They have requested a change of venue, contending that "a fair trial for Mr. Fravel cannot be accomplished in Winona County" because of the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the case. This motion raises questions about the impartiality of a local jury. One of the pivotal arguments made by Fravel's attorneys pertains to the grand jury's indictment. They argue that the grand jury lacked sufficient evidence to establish premeditation and intent, which are essential elements for a first-degree murder charge. This motion seeks to challenge the basis of the charges against Fravel. In addition to the dismissal request, the defense is aiming to prevent the state from seeking aggravated charges against Fravel if he is found guilty. They assert that the factors presented by the prosecutors are not applicable to Fravel's case, indicating a desire to limit the severity of potential penalties. Furthermore, the defense is seeking to exclude certain pieces of evidence from the trial. They aim to block any testimony related to Madeline Kingsbury's medical history, mental health, or statements made to therapists or counselors. These measures are taken to ensure that the case remains focused on the facts and circumstances directly related to the alleged crime. One particularly noteworthy motion pertains to a statement referencing another high-profile murder victim, Gabby Petito, made before Fravel's arrest. The defense argues that Fravel was not properly Mirandized, raising concerns about the admissibility of this statement in court. Another aspect of the defense's strategy involves challenging the validity of the data obtained from Fravel's phone between March 31 and April 2. They allege that law enforcement's statements used to obtain the warrant for this data were based on false information, aiming to exclude this potentially incriminating evidence. These motions will now be subject to the judgment of a judge who will rule on them at a later date. A contested omnibus hearing is scheduled for March 19, where key decisions regarding the future of the case may be made. As legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and just resolution for all parties involved in this high-profile murder case. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The mysterious disappearance and subsequent death of 26-year-old Madeline Kingsbury, a beloved mother of two from Minnesota, has taken a dark and unexpected turn. Adam Fravel, her ex-boyfriend, has recently been indicted on severe charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder. This development intensifies the spotlight on the controversial case that has gripped Minnesota residents and the nation. Reports from CBS News, FOX 9, and Winona Daily News confirmed that the indictment against 29-year-old Fravel came from the Winona County Attorney's Office. Although initially facing two charges of second-degree murder back on June 9, the stakes have been elevated considerably with this grand jury's decision. Madeline Kingsbury, a devoted mother to a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, vanished "under suspicious circumstances" after a seemingly routine task of dropping her children at daycare on the morning of March 31. An intensive search ensued, and the heartbreaking discovery of her remains was made on June 7 in a concealed, heavily wooded area off Highway 43 near Mabel, Minn., in Fillmore County. Authorities promptly arrested Fravel "on probable cause" on the very day of this tragic discovery and brought formal charges against him shortly after. Digging deeper into the pair's relationship, a criminal complaint unveiled that Fravel and Kingsbury, despite sharing seven tumultuous years together, had recently separated. Amidst this transition of moving out of their shared Winona residence, Fravel vehemently denied any involvement in Kingsbury's disappearance when initially questioned. Expressing his sentiment, he told ABC News, “I want the mother of my 5-year-old and 2-year-old to be found and brought home safely. I want that more than anything.” However, the evidence compiled painted a contrasting picture. Kingsbury's body, tragically found near a rural property owned by Fravel's parents, was concealed within "a grey fitted bed sheet" that investigators identified as originating from the home Kingsbury had shared with Fravel. Further intensifying suspicions around Fravel were his admissions regarding the highly-publicized Gabby Petito case. According to the complaint, Fravel confessed to an "infatuation" with the case and allegedly made a chilling comment to Kingsbury about her meeting a fate similar to Gabby Petito's. While Fravel insists this remark was intended as a jest, its sinister undertones can't be ignored, particularly when considering the tragic end Petito met at the hands of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in 2021. The complaint against Fravel also shines a light on the disturbing dynamics of their relationship. A concerning text from Kingsbury dated September 21, 2021, implies an alleged incident of physical violence, where she wrote, "You know I am not really OK with or over the fact that you put your hand around my neck and pushed me down in front of the kids earlier." Furthermore, a friend of Kingsbury's attested to witnessing an episode where Fravel struck Kingsbury during a video call. On another occasion, this friend noticed bruises on Kingsbury's face, signs she seemed keen to hide. In the aftermath of these tragic events, Fravel unsuccessfully sought custody of their two children. The Winona Police Department, in their statement from June 9, reassured the public that the children are safely placed with Kingsbury's father. Their future will be determined by the CHIPS court at a subsequent date. David Kingsbury, Madeline's grieving father, expressed his gratitude to all those aiding in the pursuit of justice for his daughter. In a heartfelt statement to FOX 9, he declared, "The pursuit of justice for Madeline is worth every ounce of strength and effort we can muster. Not just for her alone, but also for every person suffering from domestic violence and abuse. You have not heard the last from her. Her voice will remain LOUD." If the courts find Fravel guilty, he may spend the rest of his life behind bars, a testament to the severity of his alleged crimes. This case continues to emphasize the vital need for awareness and intervention in cases of domestic abuse and violence, issues that remain tragically pertinent in today's society. In a chilling revelation, Madeline Kingsbury, who tragically disappeared a few weeks before her untimely demise, had eerily foretold her fate to a friend. "If something ever happens to me, know that Adam did it. I would never leave my kids," she allegedly confided. The Adam in question is her ex-boyfriend, Adam Fravel, the father of her children and the primary suspect charged with her murder. These details form part of a comprehensive cache of evidence recently brought to light following a Winona County judge's unsealing of search warrants last week in the murder case. Adam Fravel was apprehended in June on charges of second-degree murder after Kingsbury's remains were found in a location south of Winona by a Fillmore County deputy. Despite his arrest, Fravel denied involvement in Kingsbury's disappearance, maintaining his innocence even after she vanished. The vanishing of Kingsbury on March 31 captured the nation's attention, igniting a widespread search effort lasting nearly 10 weeks, driven by thousands of concerned individuals. Her remains were eventually found in Mabel, a location alarmingly close to property owned by Fravel's parents. An exploration of court records revealed a troubling history of an abusive relationship between Kingsbury and Fravel, a dangerous entanglement from which Kingsbury was reportedly striving to escape. Per the search warrant affidavits, several witnesses told police that Kingsbury had confided in them about instances where Fravel had physically abused her. A witness relayed to the police how Kingsbury had stated that Fravel had taken their children without informing her of their whereabouts and had recently resorted to threats and assault. Despite her own peril, Kingsbury had refrained from reporting Fravel's actions to the authorities, reportedly because she wanted to protect their children from becoming embroiled in the situation. However, she had sought advice on how to extricate herself from this volatile on-again-off-again relationship. The couple had initiated couples therapy towards the end of 2022, according to the documents. A significant turning point occurred when Kingsbury began dating another man and made plans to relocate with him. Friends told the police that Kingsbury had applied for a townhouse in Goodview, located just northwest of Winona, a week prior to her disappearance. She had informed Fravel about her intentions to move out of the home they shared. Despite her trepidation about Fravel's possible reaction, Kingsbury was said to be excited about her prospects, as one friend relayed to the police. In testimonials given by Kingsbury's mother and sister, they detailed the extent of Fravel's emotional manipulation and controlling behavior. He would prohibit Kingsbury from communicating with her new boyfriend in his presence and demanded to read their text exchanges. Alarmingly, several friends and family revealed to the police that Fravel had chillingly warned Kingsbury, "If you don't listen, you'll end up like Gabby Petito," referencing the tragic case of the social media influencer who was killed by her boyfriend in 2021. When confronted by the police, Fravel dismissed this as a mere joke. The final sighting of Kingsbury alive was on the morning of March 31, when she and Fravel dropped their children, aged five and two, at daycare. Fravel subsequently informed the police that Kingsbury was scheduled to pick up the children that afternoon but failed to attend, leading him to step in. However, the daycare provider refuted Fravel's claim, stating that they never contacted him to collect the children and that he appeared at the daycare at the regular pick-up time. Court records reveal that Fravel initially appeared unconcerned about Kingsbury's disappearance. An hour after his conversation with the police on March 31, he texted the partner of Kingsbury's best friend, who had reported her missing, to inquire about the reason behind their decision to involve the authorities. "I'm so confused, she hasn't been gone for a day yet so I'm not freaking out but everyone else is," he texted. His apparent nonchalance extended further, as he texted that no one reached out to him until after 7 p.m. The unsealed search warrants indicate the police's suspicions that Fravel may have attempted to obliterate evidence. Scrutiny of camera systems at both Kingsbury's and Fravel's parents' homes, which were accessible to Fravel, suggested tampering. The cameras at Kingsbury's residence appeared to have been forcibly removed, and their memory cards excised, while network data post-March 30 seemed to have been eradicated. During an April 7 house search, police discovered a computer tower and laptop discarded in a dumpster and what appeared to be a burned computer device in a nearby fire pit. The court documents also revealed that Fravel had deactivated his cell phone location data and usage history. Suspicion intensified on April 9 when a neighbor of Fravel's parents filmed him wearing dark clothing and driving an ATV on their property, carrying a shovel. This was notable due to the unseasonably warm 70-degree weather. The next day, police seized the ATV and the shovel. Cadaver dogs, trained to locate human remains, indicated a positive reaction to the ATV's bed and the shovel's spade, lending credibility to law enforcement's suspicions and linking Fravel directly to Kingsbury's murder.
