It's no surprise that prior to creating the brand, Vechery began her career in healthcare private equity, where she learned of the outdated practices and predatory pricing models within the booming fertility healthcare sector. She then went on to work in strategic operations at various health tech startups and, most recently, ran the consumer-tools division at 23andMe. How To Take A Proactive Approach With Your Fertility

Get Pregnant Naturally

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2021 35:21

Afton Vechery joins us today as we’re digging taking a proactive approach to your fertility early in the journey. In my teens, my periods were so heavy and I would bleed through the pads (it was especially mortifying during high school as I was always worried people could see the huge pad or that I was leaking!). And then in my early 20’s, my periods disappeared altogether and I was placed on hormonal birth control and then diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency/failure at 28. My body was desperately trying to tell me something and the first line of defense was not to discover WHY my periods were heavy and then disappearing – but to give me the pill. The reason I share my story is so that other women do not have to struggle like I did – thinking that the only option is IVF and/or donor eggs. If we intervene early and take a proactive approach with our fertility we can reverse the symptoms and get pregnant naturally. I’ve seen it over and over again. The body wants to heal. I’m excited to welcome Afton Vechery to the podcast. Her company, Modern Fertility, offers an at-home hormone test—the same one given in fertility clinics, but for a fraction of the price so that we can proactively take charge of our own health and fertility. In this episode you'll learn: 1) How the conversation around women’s health is changing and why fertility such a hot topic (especially for young women). 2) The conventional parameters around fertility testing and why this approach is outdated (i.e. TTC are told to wait 1 year or 6 months over 35). How to be your own advocate. 3) Which questions we should be asking our OB/Gyn so that we don’t waste time. --- TIMESTAMPS: 05:58- INTRO TO TODAY'S EPISODE AND AFTON'S BIO 07:03- AFTON’S PERSONAL STORY 10:00- THE TRENDS WITH WOMEN’S HORMONES AND FERTILITY  "We know our bodies best.” The importance of understanding your body and having your information accessible 11:57- THE EDUCATION SYSTEM AND NORMALIZING WOMEN’S HEALTH   “As women, we owe it to ourselves to make these conversations normal” Taking fertility and bringing it into mainstream wellness The cultural transition we are in and why it’s important   14:00- ISSUES WITH YOUR PERIOD AND THE PILL The importance of being educated on the side of effects of your medication “Irregular periods are not normal.” The impact of the pill on hormones and irregular periods  Why it is so important to know what is going on with your body and how it uncovers healing opportunities 18:33-  RESEARCH ON THE MODERN STATE OF FERTILITY The links between fertility, finances, and the impact of covid 20:46 PREMATURE OVARIAN DEFICIENCY  Statistics and the lack of information The impact that an early diagnosis provides “It doesn’t have to be your destiny to have donor eggs.” 23:31- HOW DO WE TAKE A PROACTIVE APPROACH WITH OUR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH? Afton Vechery is the founder and CEO of Modern Fertility. If you’ve been around for a while, you know we’ve talked about fertility a few times on the podcast. If you’re thinking “I’m not trying to have kids yet,” “I’m focusing on my career right now,” or “I don’t even know if I want to have kids,” you should still care about your reproductive health! And Afton is here to help break it down for you!   Reasons to track your cycle: If you’re trying to get pregnant If you have irregular cycles If you’re getting off of birth control So you can understand your unique cycle To get to know + be connected to your body  Knowledge is power!!   The Fertility Information Gap   “It was so empowering… Women were demanding more information about their bodies so they could make the decisions that were right for them.”   Most of the information out there is about preventing pregnancy and is very fear-based— there was a gap in fertility information so Modern Fertility filled that space. Fertility just isn’t a priority until we start having issues conceiving.  Egg-freezing, IVF, hormonal birth control and kids may not be for everyone, but information is for everyone.   AMH Testing 101 I share my own AMH test level results that were shocking to me. How often should you test your AMH? 1-2x a year AMH levels remain consistent throughout the cycle, but FSH (follicle stimulating hormones) + estradiol change throughout your cycle. Because of this, you should use the test on day 3 of your cycle.   “We wanted to take these tests that are largely confined to infertility clinics and make them mainstream.”     3 Ways to jumpstart your fertility journey: BE OPEN: Be willing to look into this + start talking and researching fertility. “This is an area of our health that’s changing.” Get up to speed with the basics. Be proactive vs. reactive.   “Have a conversation about fertility. Fertility is a part of reproductive health and reproductive health is just a part of our general health.”   Resources Check out Modern Fertility at ModernFertility.com and on IG at @modernfertility. Meet Afton Vechery. She is the CEO of Modern Fertility and she is taking on women’s health globally at 31 years old. Afton lives in San Francisco with her fiancé Zach and her new puppy. She loves biking throughout the city and her favorite restaurant is Salumeria. Afton was featured in 30 under 30 and 40 under 40 after raising 22 million in private equity to build this company. Afton studied neuroscience at Wake Forest University in North Carolina before heading off to work in NYC for a private equity healthcare fund in their women’s health division. From their she gained momentum in an autism start up and then at 23&Me. While at 23&Me she became curious about her own fertility. That is when her doctor said, “No, I am not going to order these fertility tests for you.” You see she wasn’t trying to get pregnant so her provider dismissed her proactive curiosity. So she did what all rational women do….she did it anyway. And, she was ultra surprised when she got a bill for $1500. Afton then set out to build a company where women would proactively learn about their fertility and it would be affordable. Today, your personal fertility test with Modern Fertility costs just $159 and you can use your FSA or HSA to pay for it. That is 10% of the out of pocket cost if your provider writes a prescription for you and sends you to a lab. A quick finger prick from the comfort of your own home begins your awareness and planning journey with Modern Fertility. Tune in to hear the full story of how Modern Fertility was birthed, what they are doing for the LGBTQIA+ community and what in the world AMH is and what it means for your fertility and egg quality. At 23, Afton Vechery was working in healthcare and private equity, when she started looking into women’s health and IVF clinics, specifically the unaddressed emotional component and lack of proactive fertility education. After her doctor declined her request to test her hormone levels, Afton had to go a fertility clinic, where she was charged $1,500 for a basic panel. And so began the journey to Modern Fertility, a women’s health company that provides a comprehensive, fertility hormone test you take at home for only $159. They also provide research, education, and support so you can present your doctor with your findings, and can make informed decisions about your life plan, and starting a family. In her research, Afton talked to thousands of women who received misinformation, roadblocks, and conflicting advice while just trying to be proactive about their health. Modern Fertility believes that we all deserve clinically sound information, so we can do what's right for us, whatever that may be. They believe that having a reliable, trusted resource for reproductive health information is a right — not a privilege. You all know I have been struggling my fertility, and specifically, our almost impossible healthcare system, so I am beyond happy to share this information with all of you so you can prevent what I’m going through now. Also, pro tip, Modern Fertility has an ovulation kit that you scan into the app, so you know exactly when you’re ovulating. Genius. It's not a secret that I am deeply passionate about women's health, but what I've found in my many conversations on this topic is that women are rarely informed about what's happening in their body before they run into an issue. It's very much reactive medicine rather than preventative. Besides getting a pap smear, it is incredibly difficult for women to start a conversation about their reproductive health unless they're already dealing with an issue. This is why Modern Fertility was born. And, neither does Afton.  During this podcast episode, we will hear from Afton Vechery, the co-founder of the San Francisco-based startup, Modern Fertility. Modern Fertility is an at-home fertility test, where for only $150, you can have access to your fertility hormones in an easy and accessible way. After Afton went through her own difficult experience trying to understand what her fertility options were, she decided that something more needed to be done. So, she set out to democratize women’s hormones - and understanding of our bodies. During our chat, Afton takes us back to the beginning - starting with her passion for melding science and business back in middle school (seriously!). She spent her entire career so far sitting in between these two areas, always asking “why”. No matter what life stage you’re at, this episode is an inspiring take on questioning the status quo...and doing something about it. Women are more open now than ever before about how they ended up with that bun in the oven. In a prenatal yoga class, one yogi praises her acupuncturist, another extols IVF and another commends her beloved basal thermometer. One even stored her eggs for a future undertaking. As women navigate what’s often a fraught voyage toward conception, it’s vital we talk to each other. By doing so, we not only support a sisterhood, we also work to dispel unhelpful fertility myths, like the idea that eating yams will result in twins or launching into a full-blown handstand after doing the deed is a sure-fire guarantee of conception.
