On a recent trip to India, the Surgeon General sat down with the delightful and inspiring father-daughter duo of Aamir and Ira Khan. Aamir is a renowned and beloved actor and producer, appearing in some of India's biggest films. Ira Khan is founder of the Agatsu Foundation, a peer support and counseling center in Mumbai. Many people assume Aamir and Ira's lives are easy and worry-free given their success and fame. But as you'll hear in our conversation, they, like all of us, have their own mental health struggles. Ira openly shares her experience with depression and anxiety. And at the height of his career, Aamir stepped back from acting to reconnect with himself and his family. They are very open about their mental health journey, which they are taking together as father and daughter. We hope this conversation gives families the inspiration and courage to have honest conversations about mental health. This conversation is the EXTENDED version of the conversation that appears on Netflix India's YouTube channel. (03:10) What was the culture of mental health different for Aamir and Ira when each were growing up? (08:06) How has Ira struggled with, and addressed, her mental health?(13:39) How did Aamir respond to Ira's mental health struggles, and navigate his own?(25:00) How is loneliness affecting people around the world, and what can we do about it?(35:22) How can we shift the culture around talking about mental health, and make it as easy to talk about as a physical ailment?(40:41) What have Aamir and Ira learned from doing therapy?(51:43) How has social connection been a powerful healing force in Dr. Murthy's life?(01:00:35) What advice do Aamir and Ira have for parents and for young people struggling with their mental health? We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. For more episodes, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls. ******ATTENTION! EVENT: Grip Strength Kettlebell Sport Competition WHEN: Sept. 10, Nanaimo, BC WHERE: Island Optimal Health & Performance HOST: Ballistic Strength Kettlebell Gym & Nanaimo Kettlebell Club WEBSITE: http://www.gripstrength.ca Do you know when the first kettlebell sport meet in Canada was held? Ballistic Strength did some digging. On the southern tip of Toronto, Ontario’s Portuguese district, in the downtown west end, a Crossfit Box by the name of Academy of Lions held a kettlebell sport clinic in May of 2010. It was there that Boris Terzic and Eric St-Onge, two pupils of WKC founder Valery Fedorenko, took their obsession and shared it with their fellow countrymen. Following shortly thereafter, Boris Terzic, with the assistance of Shawn Mozen from Agatsu, put on the first Kettlebell Sport Meet in Canada, on July 17th, 2010. Competitors included Ryan Kennedy of the Toronto Kettlebell Club and Fighting Arts Collective, IUKL Judge and Veteran Lifter Mike Sherman - a former guest on this show, and longtime competitor Estella Hom. Never having organized an event quite like it before, Boris had his doubts. Only 1 lifter was registered just 2-weeks prior to the meet, and it seemed as though history might not happen after all, but a little bit of luck and word of mouth ensured a roster of 15 lifters. I’m joined on this episode by Eric St-Onge, a former competitive KB Sport athlete and North American record holder in the 32kg jerk at 101 reps. Eric hung up his lifting shoes, and is currently working has as a chiropractor at FITS Toronto, the official Sport Science facility of the TO Argonauts, as well as serving as a Sports Sciences Resident at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Eric may have been absent from Canadian KB Sport as of late, but rumour has it we may just see him grace the platform by Feb of 2017. Eric had lots to share - his own personal triumphs and tragedies, and even some tips that may boost your kb game. Find Eric here: www.drericstonge.com ****************************************************************** On May 28th, 2016 The Canadian Kettlebell Sport Nationals returns to beautiful BC, in the seaside town of Sidney, which lies just outside of the province’s capital. Ranking Systems. In kettlebell sport we have a ranking system. Not quite like the military - and you won’t see a Rank 3 fetching coffee for a Master of Sport. No, it’s more like martial arts. Our ‘Master of Sport’ rank is a lot like a black belt, but without ability to single-handedly subdue a room full of would-be assassins.Of course, much like blackbelts, there are many Masters of Sport. In fact, I’ve read some estimates as high as 350,000 black belts working in the U.S. Then again, the World Registry of Black Belts, who attempt to tease out the pay-for Black Belts, lists just over 400 names across North and South America’s.There are many with the rank, but fighters are also ranked against each other. Most MMA sites host or produce their own pound-for-pound best fighter lists, many of which listing who they believe to be the top 10 fighters in the world. But like McLeod would say, there can be only one.In kettlebell sport we all have equal opportunity to achieve rank without resistance. But to be a champion you have to dig a bit deeper, and go head to head with your peers (or perhaps, your former idols). It’s true - achieving rank can be a very intrinsic process, a way of measuring personal progress, but at every rung of the ladder you also have the opportunity to make your mark - to stand out amongst the other rank and filers. Sure you can hold the rank, but can you beat everyone else in the division? You may look at that proposition as being motivated more by status than personal progress - but could chasing rank ultimately be holding you back? It might be.
