On a recent trip to India, the Surgeon General sat down with the delightful and inspiring father-daughter duo of Aamir and Ira Khan. Aamir is a renowned and beloved actor and producer, appearing in some of India's biggest films. Ira Khan is founder of the Agatsu Foundation, a peer support and counseling center in Mumbai. Many people assume Aamir and Ira's lives are easy and worry-free given their success and fame. But as you'll hear in our conversation, they, like all of us, have their own mental health struggles. Ira openly shares her experience with depression and anxiety. And at the height of his career, Aamir stepped back from acting to reconnect with himself and his family. They are very open about their mental health journey, which they are taking together as father and daughter. We hope this conversation gives families the inspiration and courage to have honest conversations about mental health.  This conversation is the EXTENDED version of the conversation that appears on Netflix India's YouTube channel. (03:10)    What was the culture of mental health different for Aamir and Ira when each were growing up? (08:06)    How has Ira struggled with, and addressed, her mental health?(13:39)    How did Aamir respond to Ira's mental health struggles, and navigate his own?(25:00)    How is loneliness affecting people around the world, and what can we do about it?(35:22)    How can we shift the culture around talking about mental health, and make it as easy to talk about as a physical ailment?(40:41)    What have Aamir and Ira learned from doing therapy?(51:43)    How has social connection been a powerful healing force in Dr. Murthy's life?(01:00:35)    What advice do Aamir and Ira have for parents and for young people struggling with their mental health? We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. She is a Suicide Prevention Gatekeeping Instructor and a HAP counsellor at Agatsu and regularly conducts sessions on Emotional Hygiene, which is Agatsu's primary proposal to society. She's on the Steering Council of IMHA. Ira is also a passionate advocate of mental wellbeing in her personal capacity having done talks, panel discussions and podcasts. The kindness of her heart is rivalled only by the fire of her spirit. She recognizes that human beings themselves are humanity's greatest enemies when they are busying themselves not being its champions. Agatsu is her invitation to everyone to confront the unknown within and find their own truth. ----- Through his career in Hindi films, Aamir Khan has established himself as one of the most popular and influential actors of Indian cinema. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including four National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards. He was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010. In 2001, Khan started a production company, whose first release, “Lagaan,” was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and earned him a National Film Award for Best Popular Film and two more Filmfare Awards (Best Actor and Best Film). Khan's greatest commercial successes came with “Ghajini," “3 Idiots,” “Dhoom 3,” “PK,” and “Dangal,” all of which held records for being the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. Khan won his third Best Actor award at Filmfare for “Dangal.” In addition to acting, Khan is a humanitarian and has participated and spoken out for various social causes. The Academy Awards are changing the way their ceremony will be run in three drastic ways over the next two years. Dakota goes over the pros and cons for each of these changes. First- The date of the ceremony will be changed from the end of February to the beginning of February starting in 2020. What this means for when nominations are announced to what other awards shows will do is still up in the air, but this impact will be felt across the industry. Second- The show will be capped at a hard three hours, meaning that some things will need to be cut out with the Academy already announcing that some categories (at the moment unnamed) will be handed out during commercial breaks and will be shown in a montage at the end of ceremony. Other changes to ensure the time length have not been announced yet. Third- There will a Best Popular Film award handed out next to the Best Picture award. As far as the rules surrounding what makes a film “popular” have not been announced but the fall out from this will be felt as it will change the landscape of what the award means, what types of films will be nominated and how it will affect smaller films. For further reading check out Vulture “The Oscars Made Some Dumb Decisions Today” and Forbes “New Category For Popular Movies Will Help Disney Rule The Oscars”. You can also check out Box Office Mojo and their list of highest grossing films of the year so far to see some potential nominees. Something new I’ll be asking people to do is to rate and review Contra Zoom on Podchaser, a site that aims to be the IMDb of podcasts. Please rate 5 stars and if possible leave a short review to help grow this show. Also if you have never given the show a rating on iTunes, that also helps tremendously. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

Less than 24 hours after the 91st Academy Awards took place, Rob takes to the mic to vent/celebrate the Oscar wins. It was a big night for films like Green Book, Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody, much to many people's delight/dismay. But the evening also marked major wins for Roma, The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. All in all, it was a rollercoaster ride of exciting moments (Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's performance, Best Actress) and groan-inducing turns (oh, we'll get there). So join Rob as he runs through every single win and officially closes the green book on this awards season. From the prospect of a Best Popular Film statuette to the Academy's struggle to find a willing host to emcee the evening to the misguided idea to present select awards during the commercial breaks, this year's Oscars were loaded with drama that had nothing to do with the nominated films. Perhaps such internal chaos is indicative of changes ahead. Only time will tell. For now, regardless of what you thought about the winners, at least we can all happily move on to the promising films that 2019 has in store for us and begin to speculate what shape the ceremony will take when next we meet it. Oh, we’ll certainly weigh in with our favorite everything on the year, and boy, do we have a ton of categories, some being serious and some fun. In 2017, we called it our Year In Review series, and we included our superlatives pod AKA the Best Of’s episode, and in our humble opinion, it’s one of our better self made award shows. Then we dove into our top 10s as well what we would nominate and pick to win all of the Oscar categories in our 2017 MMOs. Will we follow the same exact format this year? We don’t quite know yet. But we will have another Year in Review Series in the weeks leading up to the Oscars. So do stay tuned. This episode is a teaser toward those eventual shows, but also, it’s a fun and relatively quick way to give you some mid-week entertainment over the holiday break when very few other pods are dropping new content. So you’re welcome, we love you, and Happy Holidays. These scene recommendations should hopefully encourage you to watch some awesome movies, and it’s our little gift to you this Christmas. Stay tuned for the rest of our Awards Season coverage. We’ll continue our Oscar Sprint Profiles as we review all of the contenders for the red carpet one movie at a time. We’re up to 28 movies in that series thus far, and we also have a bunch of 2018 movie events to compliment our awards taste with a more popular slant. Speaking of popular films, we did 3 separate episodes on the Breaking News odyssey of the Best Popular Film category. The centerpiece of those shows was our Perfect Oscar Fix on how we’d make the Academy Awards great again. Laugh at our way too early predictions and our 2 part mid-year report, and of course, we’ve been previewing Oscar films with our 6 part Oscar Trailers series and on a weekly basis with MMOW. You can find all of these episodes in our back catalog, and on Soundcloud, we made the “2018/19 Awards Season + Oscars” playlist so that you can find them easily. The “Breaking News Episodes/ Random Episodes also contains a few from that long list, and there’s yet another playlist entitled “MMO Weekly Episodes” to listen to our new hit series there. We’ll also cover the hell out of the Golden Globes. There’s a reaction episode to those nominations already up on our feed. We plan to record a Globe predictions episode next week, and we’ll certainly have a reaction show to the Hollywood Foreign Press’ main event coming to you a monday from now. Following that, we’ll have reactions to the Critics Choice Awards, SAG’s, and of course, to the Oscar Nominations later in the month. So when reality kinda sucks in the middle of winter, watch movies and stay updated on the Oscar Race with us. Finally, let us know what your favorite or best scenes of 2018 are, and we’ll be reading some of your selections on the next MMO Weekly. You can send those to us on social media at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail, as well as @MMandOscar on Twitter. Once again, we wish you the happiest of holidays, and thank you for listening.

That is NOT this episode. THIS episode is what happened after that tremendously focused and well coordinated effort of content production. That will be our next episode of Hollywood H-H-HOT Takes giving you a complete overview of all the Oscar News coming out of the 3 renowned fall film festivals & previewing the NYFF. This is the rest of the topics we wanted to cover from the past month. It’s some fun stuff, the non-Oscar stuff, but since we were so goofy, we’re calling our Hollywood NOT Takes. Because they’re NOT takes, basically… we just tell bizarre stories and make ridiculous references for 30 minutes, talking past each other like the obliquely written characters from a Noah Baumbach script. Even still, there’s a fun array of topics we should have addressed better. James Bond might be dead soon, Also Mike still pays for Moviepass for some reason, the Joker is actually just Joaquin Phoenix with a bad haircut, Henry Cavill is too hot for the DCEU, The Conjuring 3, Zombieland 2, and Rambo 5 all go into production soon, and Leonardo DiCaprio has the same fashion sense as one of your hosts. So yes, these were all fun topics to discuss, but please don’t judge us too harshly. We’ll drop this as an early in the week bonus episode, and perhaps it could play on as a lively B-Side in your listening futures. If not, ...well, we had fun. Best Popular Film's Death. ***OSCARS BREAKING NEWS!!! And yes, we’re SPOILER FREE*** Burt Reynolds RIP: Our favorites, his most popular films - :49 The Best Popular Film Category has been Postponed. Mike 1 reads the BREAKING NEWS + How We Got Here - 2:28 Gut Reactions + How this affects Black Panther - 5:22 Where the Academy Could Go From Here - 12:15 What happens to Black Panther now? - 17:07 Would they bring Best Popular Film back next year? - 18:20 Social Media - 21:44 First and foremost, RIP, Burt Reynolds. He’s acted in so many great films. We’ve loved his movies from The Longest Yard to his Oscar nomination in Boogie Nights, from his arrow shooting outdoorsman in Deliverance to his fast driving turn in the super popular films of the Smokey and the Bandit franchise. It’s a sad day, and we offer our condolences to his family at the top of the show. Last month, the Academy instituted three changes to the Oscars. The 2020 awards would be pushed up from late February to very early in the month, all future broadcasts would be capped at a maximum of 3 hours, pushing many of the technical and short film awards into commercial breaks and a summary montage later in the night, and of course, the academy would add a category for Best Achievement in a Popular Film. The Academy kept the first two changes, but they postponed the Best Popular Film addition. So we had a lot to break down here in a short amount of time. As we did in the previous Breaking News halfisode, we try to hit all the angles, but we’re mostly concerned with our initial gut reactions and hot takes to this madness. Go back to Halfisode 16 and episode 92 to catch up on this story and hear our elaborate, yet perfect fix for the Oscars. Now we have some more time to bend the Academy to our will. What do you think about the Academy’s decision to delay the addition of Best Popular Film? Was it a good decision? Did they forever doom or forever shelve the possibility of the category? Will Black Panther or other “popular films” get nominated this year? Will they have a chance to win? And what would happen if Black Panther won the award? Would the Academy be turned upside down? Chat with us on social media. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Reddit, Gmail, Instagram, and Facebook. We are @MMandOscar on Twitter, where we’re our most active. Who else would describe their deepest darkest secrets during their car ride home from a late night screening? Who else could work in yet another hot take filled analysis on the Oscar's Best Popular Film category controversy? All that, plus you get one hell of a crazy rich review. The production story hallmarks a cultural significance the industry hasn’t celebrated for 25 years. Then the resulting movie specs showcase some critical and box office numbers never before been seen by the business. Crazy Rich Asians is a rare film, and we do our best to give it a profile worthy of its accomplishments. Both the non-spoiler and spoiler reviews also turn out to be two of our more substantive in MMO OSP history. We dive into our projections and predictions for the Oscar and Golden Globe possibilities for Michelle Yeoh and company. Then we review nearly all of the production values and performances to close out the non-spoiler section. And for our encore, the spoiler section commits to several scene breakdowns you don’t want to miss. That, plus we banter about dumplings. This review marks our 13th Oscar Sprint Profile. We’ve also reviewed Black Panther, A Quiet Place, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Hereditary, The Incredibles 2, Sorry To Bother You, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Eighth Grade, Isle of Dogs, and BlacKkKlansman. Nobody gives you as much movie world coverage as us and to prove it, just dive into the rest of our catalog. There are trailer round up episodes from Comic Con and three on Oscar Contenders. We do monthly previews of theatrical releases and both monthly / timely Hollywood and industry news shows. We offer Quarterly reviews of Netflix and mid year reports on the Oscar Race and HBO on demand. There are full series on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Mission Impossible films. Then of course, we mine Oscar History for breakdowns of all your favorite films and songs. Chat with us on social media. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. The Emmy Campaign Starts Here! ***Regarding the film world, this is a Non-Spoiler Episode*** We WILL discuss & spoil some recent WWE plotlines. Mike 1’s Opening Rant / Who Is Paul Heyman? - 1:56 The Interrogation - 4:33 Heyman as a Legitimate Thespian - 10:30 See, Buy, Skip - 21:45 Closing Argument - 23:21 The WWE develops popular actors, and they’ve done so throughout recent film & television history. From Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan to The Rock and John Cena, Hollywood has been scouting Vince McMahon’s sports entertainment company for their next action hero since the 80s. But what if World Wrestling’s next big cross-over to Hollywood star wasn’t even a wrestler?? From thewrap, slashfilm, & msn articles to all corners of #filmtwitter, many have praised the Emmy worthy performance of one of wrestling’s unlikeliest stars, Paul Heyman. Think boxing’s Don King or UFC’s Dana White, just give them a duster & turned up to 11. Paul Heyman is a promoter / advocate. He reps his wrestlers like lawyers, but follows them around like a sidekick. What he really does is cover for some of the worst actors in the wrestling ranks. The George to their Lenny, the Frankenstein to their Monster, when a fan favorite in-the-ring star needs a mouthpiece, that’s when Paul Heyman’s been at his best. He’s old, he’s bald, he’s fat, and he’s one of our favorite ACTORS to perform in the wrestling world in a long long while. We certainly have a lot of fun breaking down Heyman’s recent performances leading into this past Summer Slam. A fan of wrestling, Mike 1 has quite a list of superlatives to throw out there, and Also Mike (who hasn’t watched a wrestling match in over 20 years) can’t even produce a single hardball question. Bottom Line: we’re both impressed with Heyman as a character, a theatrical performer who can sure rile up a crowd, but also as an actor who understands how to get his message across on camera. Check out our other DatA’s (Devil and the Advocate) episodes. We’ve reviewed Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the latest Halloween and Mandy trailers. Of course, DatA’s are only a small portion of what we do here, and we have episodes of all shapes and sizes in our catalog. There’s 16 halfisodes including 10 shows on Best Original Song categories of Oscars past and the 5 Mission Impossible films leading into our full OSP of MI6: Fallout. From the stories behind the scenes to the box office, it’s one of the more jam packed production profiles. Then although we bounce around from topic to non-spoiler topic, we do cover all of the major Oscar categories and if this film will contend. The spoiler music plays, and after some carryover conversation from non-spoilers, we must break down the plot to get our heads around the story and themes being put across to us. Honestly, we are still wrestling with this film. It’s a massive undertaking with a deceptive amount of depth - depth of feeling certainly, but also a depth in terms of all those English Exam vocabulary words we could use to analyze the story. Although, we’re not at our most articulate, this debate between Mikes brings forth a thesis from Mike 1, and we break down his main takeaway in spoilers. BlacKkKlansman is our 12th Oscar Sprint Profile of 2018. But if that’s not enough, the Academy made two more humongous changes to make things get even crazier. They’ve moved up the date of the show and therefore shortened award season. They’ve also put a hard cap on the broadcast time to make it a 3 hour event, pushing many speeches and below the line technical category presentations into the commercial breaks. We predict what the aftermath of these two huge changes might be, and we debate why the Academy is doing what it’s doing. It’s one of our most fascinating Hollywood Hot Take episodes to date, and you don’t want to miss it. We’ll continue to follow up on this story in our next HHT episode, tentatively scheduled for next week after our BlacKkKlansman review. There’s gonna be a deep dive on the world of Moviepass in that episode. So although we hope this real time release gives you your fix on this latest breaking news, we also think these debates are relevant in the coming months. Time will tell, but we hope this episode has legs regardless of when you might click play. If you enjoyed this, do check out our back catalog of episodes. We have monthly Hollywood News reports we call Hollywood Hot Take (HHTs), and we’ve also released many Oscar Race previews for this upcoming awards season. Our show also reviews all of the potential contenders as they’re released including Black Panther, A Quiet Place, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Hereditary, The Incredibles 2, Sorry To Bother You, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Then stay tuned for our upcoming reviews of Eighth Grade, Isle of Dogs, and BlacKkKlansman. Things are heating up in and outside the movie theater for Oscar Season. There’s a reason that carpet is red. So do stay tuned. Feel free to chat with us on social media. We are Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter. Episode 103 is probably the most important episode we have ever recorded. History was made on August 8th 2018 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced three major new changes which rocked the industry. After years of making suggestions on what changes we would like to see The Academy introduce, none of the changes they actually announced pleased us one bit. Here to discuss all of this is Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers, Celia Schlekewey, Kt Schaefer, Josh Parham & Jacey Aldredge as we try to answer your questions and ask some of our own regarding the recent decisions by AMPAS. The search for the Next Best Picture just got more complicated. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
