Alan bradley's new book, ‘Unmasking Samantha Cookes: The Many Lives of a Serial Fraudster', tells the extraordinary true story of a serial fraudster who moved between Ireland and the UK for more than a decade, assuming multiple identities, and leaving a trail of devastated families, duped institutions, and exploited charities in her wake. Through meticulous investigation and first-hand testimony, award‑winning documentary film‑maker Alan Bradley reveals how Samantha Cookes - better known to many as “Carrie Jade Williams” - weaponised trust, disability, and vulnerability to deceive everyone from young parents to universities and the Irish state itself. Alan joins Pat in studio to discuss.
Description:Some stories feel less like books and more like quiet companions. Theo of Golden is one of those. This month in the Jen Hatmaker Book Club, Jen sits down with author Allen Levi to talk about the small-town novel that has quietly captured the hearts of readers around the world. Set in the fictional town of Golden, Georgia, the story introduces us to Theo — a mysterious newcomer whose little shop becomes an unlikely gathering place for the people around him. As neighbors wander in carrying grief, questions, regrets, and ordinary Tuesdays, something remarkable begins to happen: lives shift, wounds soften, and the quiet work of grace unfolds in the most unexpected ways. But Allen's path to writing Theo of Golden is a story of its own. Before this book found its way into readers' hands, Allen spent decades living another life — as a litigator and as a musician and songwriter, telling stories in courtrooms and through songs long before he ever sat down to write a novel. In this conversation, Jen and Allen talk about how those two worlds — law and music — shaped the storyteller he would eventually become, and how the long arc of a creative life sometimes leads us somewhere we never expected. Together, Jen and Allen talk about the beauty of slow stories, the sacredness hiding in ordinary places, and why the most transformative moments in life rarely arrive with fanfare. They explore the characters of Golden, the themes of redemption and belonging woven through the book, and the deeper invitation at the heart of Theo's story — to pay attention to the people and moments right in front of us. If you've ever believed that kindness still matters, that communities can heal one conversation at a time, or that ordinary lives are full of extraordinary grace, this conversation will feel like coming home. Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and join Jen and Allen Levi for a conversation about stories, second acts, and the quiet magic that happens when people really see one another. Thought-provoking Quotes: “All through the writing of the book, I cried and cried and I'm not an easy crier, but I fell in love with these characters. They still kind of inhabit the space around me. But it told me that there was something bigger going on than just the story. Maybe the better angels of our nature are waking up and bringing something to the surface that maybe is good for us. I hope so.” – Allen Levi “I have heard, if you want to write, you just sit down with a pen and you start writing and the story will bubble up. And so I did that and the story never bubbled up. It just frustrated me and frustrated me. That's why I quit so many times, but eventually it started coming together almost like writing a song.” – Allen Levi “Everything that I've done professionally has required me to use words to tell stories, usually to persuade people. As a lawyer, I did that. As a singer songwriter, I did that. And now as a novelist.”– Allen Levi Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Theo of Golden: A Novel by Allen Levi - https://amzn.to/47J6V9p Allen Levi's Music - https://open.spotify.com/artist/2UaP04apWp23PxnhKQHJgx?si=3tzeCi3HROqRampni92Dew Jen Hatmaker Book Club - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/collections/book-club Alan Bradley - https://alanbradleyauthor.com/ The Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley - https://amzn.to/412lNMm Guest's Links: Website - https://www.allenlevi.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/allenlevi/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/allen.levi.31/ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQa2G5Ym0pyNnnK0nocxZ3Q Substack - https://substack.com/@allenclevi Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. I don't know about you, but I enjoyed ITV's recent Coronation Street and Emmerdale Corriedale crossover, a special episode to promote the new “power hour” of soaps broadcast every night on the channel. I haven't watched either soap regularly for years, but I tuned in because it was an event. An opportunity to see popular characters converse, and perhaps the hope of the history of both shows being honoured in some way.Excitingly, my hopes were answered. The cinematic presentation of the car crash, and the way these characters came together, was well put together for what it was. Clearly, a lot of thought had gone into the execution, and the cast delivered. For me, a throwback fan of both shows' past, the moment of WOW came when Ken Barlow and Eric Pollard shared a scene for the first time. It was a throwaway scene that didn't add much to the plot, but it was necessary. Even if you've never watched either show, you'll know of Ken and Eric. They are a constant and a route back to each show's respective origins.Bill Roache has been in Coronation Street since the first episode in 1960. Viewers have watched Ken's life unfold and shared in every piece of drama he has endured. Chris Chittell joined Emmerdale Farm in 1986, and Eric has been a man of many guises and eras. Both characters witnessed the evolution of their shows, from kitchen sink teatime fodder to today's soapy tension roundabout of secrets and murders. When I watched the episode of Emmerdale before Corriedale, I was struck by the difference in feel to the show of yesteryear. A far cry from the kitchen table of Annie Sugden.Allow me to digress a little here with Ma Sugden in mind, that I ask...What would Corriedale have looked like 40 years ago? 1986 was a time when both shows sought to reinvent themselves. The arrival of Alan Bradley in one, and the car crash death of Pat Sugden in another. What could have happened in a crossover? Perhaps a car crash could've involved the Sugdens and Barlows, with Jack, Joe and Ken at odds with one another. Perhaps Mike Baldwin has a business deal with Alan Turner? Or maybe, when thinking of the era, there was a cricket match involving Seth Armstrong and Jack Duckworth, what would Seth have made of Vera, Rita, Mavis or Ivy Tilsley? Such scenarios are only reserved for fan fiction, as we ponder what Amos Brearly and Henry Wilkes would've made of Bet Lynch's Rovers Return. The other thing that makes the whole thing pure fantasy is that such a crossover would've never happened because of the logistics of that time. Emmerdale Farm, as it was then, was mostly a daytime or early evening show that began to go primetime in the late 80s. Corrie was made by Granada, Emmerdale by Yorkshire Television, two different regional companies. They could've worked together, but it was unlikely. Both shows had different styles and approaches, each coming from different roots. I would argue it was only possible now because while each show has an identity, the gap isn't as wide as it used to be.I'm sure there are many critics for the crossover that did happen, but I was fairly impressed. There may have been other times it would've been excellent, such as during the era of the Tates in the early 90s, but they chose to do it at the right time. It was event television that is sorely needed in the age of declining viewership of linear television. It was an intriguing proposition to bring two titans of British soap together, and do so with drama and a hint of nostalgia. It may not be the golden years for either show, but there was enough of both DNA through the prescience of Barlows, Sugdens, Platts, Websters and Dingles to make any longtime soap fan cry with joy. Ken and Pollard? The icing on the cake.So what else is there to say? I've said enough. If you have anything to say about the shows mentioned in this podcast, you can email Jamie@OldTimeReview.co.uk, tweet @OldTimeReview on Twitter or check out the Facebook page, Old Time Review.

What contains several bits which can form a fragmentary story when used together? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. The Black Cat in this episode is NOT a rip-off of the Marvel comics character with the same name. It's a rip-off of the public domain superhero Black Cat who first appeared in Pocket Comics #1, August 1941, and had her own title from Harvey Comics with various name changes (Black Cat Western Comics, Black Cat Mystery Comics, Black Cat Mystic) until 1963.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Cat_(Harvey_Comics)2. When Wordplay took his second play “Shoot” on tour, he found it was not as popular outside of Parabellum City.3. Lana Krang presumably uses a paper or cardstock folder for her Bits file. Mine is digital but the filename is “Bits.”4. If I was trying to cheer up Miss Krang, I'd remind her of some artistically and monetarily successful novelists who were late bloomers: Umberto Eco wrote a lot of non-fiction before his first novel, The Name of the Rose, was published when he was 50. Alan Bradley was 71 when his excellent first novel, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, was published. Many such cases.Credits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the transitional and closing music were from The Big Combo (1955), both films in the public domain. Paul – not his real name – is in his thirties, and he has never had a sexual or romantic relationship. He goes to work and gets on with his colleagues but nobody knows the life of quiet despair that he lives. Nobody knows that he is an ‘incel'. Incels – or involuntary celibates - are men who define themselves as people who cannot find anybody to have a romantic or sexual relationship with, despite wanting one. Incels hang out on the darker fringes of the Internet, commiserating with each other and venting about women and society. It is a deeply misogynistic space, filled with hate speech. It is also filled with loneliness and sadness. Incels, especially in Ireland, rarely speak to the media but we delve into the world of inceldom and discover what the world looks like through their eyes.Warning: This documentary contains adult themes, discusses offensive themes, violence and suicide that could be upsetting or triggering for some people, so please take care. In this Super Sleuth episode, we talk about “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” - aka, the first in the series about our second favorite girl detective of all time, Flavia de Luce. Karen gives us some great background on author Alan Bradley and how this book came to be. Then we dig into poison lipstick, the love of libraries, priceless stamps, the need for a Clue Crew, and how Nancy and Flavia overlap (and don't) in the Venn Diagram of Sleuths. In other news, Karen wants a tertiary understanding of everything in the universe, Kelly wants to visit The Poison Garden, and Karen's mind is blown by a burning question. Don't forget - kick ‘em in the Casanovas!Rated 11.75 poisonous lipsticksRecommendations:“Murder in New York” (Netflix)Yellowface by R.F. What's up, dudes? Did you know there are Christmas references in “Tron,” one of the most ‘80s things ever? Funny or Die even did a promo for a faux holiday special! I've got Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu and Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells to talk about this 1982 cult classic!Arcade owner and programmer Kevin Flynn is a former employee of the software corporation ENCOM. Flynn has been trying to hack into ENCOM's mainframe computer to find evidence that ENCOM's senior executive Ed Dillinger stole five video games he created. Unfortunately, Dillinger's supercomputer Master Control Program constantly foils Flynn's efforts and dictates and controls most of the computer systems. One night, Flynn's former girlfriend Lora Baines and ace computer programmer Alan Bradley help Flynn break into ENCOM to shut down the MCP with Alan's security program Tron. While at Lora's ENCOM work station, the MCP uses Lora's matter transmission laser on Flynn. It digitizes him and transports him into the computer. Flynn finds himself in an electronic world ruled by the MCP and his evil chief henchman Sark. There low-level computer programs are the alter egos of their creators and are forced to compete in gladiatorial games. Flynn, as a User, is capable of fantastic feats within the computer world. With help from Tron, a heroic and fearless security program and his lover, Yori, Flynn sets out destroy the MCP and help Tron liberate the system from the MCP's control. Destroying the MCP is Flynn's only way of returning to the real world. Oh, and let's not forget Don Deluise, Burt Reynolds, and Santa! Summary: It's a holly, jolly holiday here on Hearts & Daggers! Today, Holly and Devin discuss books set during this holiday season. Whatever holiday you do (or don't) celebrate, these co-hosts appreciate the season for its coziness, the twinkling lights, and an excuse to spike hot chocolate with Bailey's Irish Cream before the seasonal depression really hits. Both books this round are on the lighter side, and for Holly that means just one (1) murder. Topics Discussed: The Heart (5:26): Devin discussed The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox, a book chockablock full of fun romance tropes. Cass and Charlie are identical twin sisters living very different lives; Charlie is a glamorous cooking show co-host down in LA, while Cass helps run their parents' bakery in their quiet, quaint hometown. Due to a series of unfortunate (or fortunate?) events, they switch places without telling anyone and get a taste for how the other twin lives. Her key takeaways were: Written under a penname by two Canadian journalist/authors, The Holiday Swap is a delightful combo of The Princess Switch, The Parent Trap, and the entire Hallmark Channel without, somehow, being too much in a single book. Cass and Charlie are endearing protagonists and their love interests (a Physician's Assistant and a Firefighter) are unique, interesting, and just the right amount of stereotypically hunky. Unlike many holiday romances, the side characters in this novel are well-rounded and complete, adding depth to a light romance that does in fact include a small-town holiday festival with vendor booths, hot coco, and ice skating. The Dagger (20:28): Holly discussed I Am Half Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley, the fourth book in the Flavia de Luce mystery series. Set at Christmastime in 1950s England, Flavia's family rents their derelict mansion out to a film crew for the holidays after they fall on hard times financially. Flavia is principally focused on finally catching Santa by concocting a glue that will stick him to the chimney flue, but when someone is found murdered in the mansion this 11 year-old pivots with gusto. Her key takeaways were: Written from Flavia's point of view, the book runs rampant with philosophical, literary, and mythological references with lots of dry wit and humor that allows our youthful protagonist to really shine. Bradley weaves in some Sherlockian moments in the novel; Flavia has chemical expertise and attention to detail that helps her notice aspects of crime scenes or corpses that the detectives all miss. Overall, the mystery itself was a bit lacking but the biting wit of the writing and a young narrator we can root for made this novel a true holiday delight for anyone who loves murder but also cozy season. Hot On the Shelf (44:27): Devin: Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun Holly: The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon What's Making Our Hearts Race (47:34): Devin: Single All The Way on Netflix Holly: The Menu (film) Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
