Paul – not his real name – is in his thirties, and he has never had a sexual or romantic relationship. He goes to work and gets on with his colleagues but nobody knows the life of quiet despair that he lives. Nobody knows that he is an ‘incel'. Incels – or involuntary celibates - are men who define themselves as people who cannot find anybody to have a romantic or sexual relationship with, despite wanting one. Incels hang out on the darker fringes of the Internet, commiserating with each other and venting about women and society. It is a deeply misogynistic space, filled with hate speech. It is also filled with loneliness and sadness. Incels, especially in Ireland, rarely speak to the media but we delve into the world of inceldom and discover what the world looks like through their eyes.Warning: This documentary contains adult themes, discusses offensive themes, violence and suicide that could be upsetting or triggering for some people, so please take care. Summary: It's a holly, jolly holiday here on Hearts & Daggers! Today, Holly and Devin discuss books set during this holiday season. Whatever holiday you do (or don't) celebrate, these co-hosts appreciate the season for its coziness, the twinkling lights, and an excuse to spike hot chocolate with Bailey's Irish Cream before the seasonal depression really hits. Both books this round are on the lighter side, and for Holly that means just one (1) murder. Topics Discussed: The Heart (5:26): Devin discussed The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox, a book chockablock full of fun romance tropes. Cass and Charlie are identical twin sisters living very different lives; Charlie is a glamorous cooking show co-host down in LA, while Cass helps run their parents' bakery in their quiet, quaint hometown. Due to a series of unfortunate (or fortunate?) events, they switch places without telling anyone and get a taste for how the other twin lives. Her key takeaways were: Written under a penname by two Canadian journalist/authors, The Holiday Swap is a delightful combo of The Princess Switch, The Parent Trap, and the entire Hallmark Channel without, somehow, being too much in a single book. Cass and Charlie are endearing protagonists and their love interests (a Physician's Assistant and a Firefighter) are unique, interesting, and just the right amount of stereotypically hunky. Unlike many holiday romances, the side characters in this novel are well-rounded and complete, adding depth to a light romance that does in fact include a small-town holiday festival with vendor booths, hot coco, and ice skating. The Dagger (20:28): Holly discussed I Am Half Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley, the fourth book in the Flavia de Luce mystery series. Set at Christmastime in 1950s England, Flavia's family rents their derelict mansion out to a film crew for the holidays after they fall on hard times financially. Flavia is principally focused on finally catching Santa by concocting a glue that will stick him to the chimney flue, but when someone is found murdered in the mansion this 11 year-old pivots with gusto. Her key takeaways were: Written from Flavia's point of view, the book runs rampant with philosophical, literary, and mythological references with lots of dry wit and humor that allows our youthful protagonist to really shine. Bradley weaves in some Sherlockian moments in the novel; Flavia has chemical expertise and attention to detail that helps her notice aspects of crime scenes or corpses that the detectives all miss. Overall, the mystery itself was a bit lacking but the biting wit of the writing and a young narrator we can root for made this novel a true holiday delight for anyone who loves murder but also cozy season. Hot On the Shelf (44:27): Devin: Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun Holly: The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon What's Making Our Hearts Race (47:34): Devin: Single All The Way on Netflix Holly: The Menu (film) Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
Folge direkt herunterladen

This year, BodyWhys, the Eating Disorders Association of Ireland have reported a 110% increase in men seeking help for eating distress. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/11/18130219/BodyWise_1811.mp3"][/audio] While the perception is that it is something that typically affects women, one in four people who are living with an eating disorder identify as male. A new Irish documentary, 'Unspoken', is now giving a voice to men who are living with an eating disorder. Director of the documentary, Alan Bradley, joined Pamela Joyce on Dermot and Dave to chat about the three men who tell their stories, his experience of working with them, and his hopes that it will spark a larger conversation around eating disorders. You can catch the chat by clicking play above and 'Unspoken' is on RTÉ One on the 18th of November at 10:15. If you would like more information or support around disordered eating or eating distress, visit the BodyWhys website.

Beloved Christian historical fiction author, Jane Kirkpatrick, tells the stories of historical women we might otherwise never have known about. Instead of fiction set in historical times and including historical people we all know about, Jane writes about real people whose lives we know little of and fills in gaps history has lost. It's fiction, but it's so much more. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Why This Author's Authentic Historical Fiction Is So Well-Loved When author Jane Kirkpatrick decided to write biographies of women who inspired or intrigued her, she didn't expect to discover so little information about the women. The first book she wanted to write was about a woman who shared quite a few similarities with her. Of course, they were separated by nearly a century. The problem was, most of what she found were only references to being the wife of someone else. That and an obituary. But further search and research finally produced enough information to create a spine for a story she'd have to fill in with how, as Betty Smith put it in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, "It should have happened." With over thirty fiction and nonfiction works, Jane Kirkpatrick offers a look at the strong, resilient women of American history and explores their stories or the stories that might have been. Those rich nuggets of fact woven into the stories gives these novels an authenticity not always found in Christian historical fiction. Perhaps that's why I love her books so much. Even when I don't like how things happen, it's because Jane Kirkpatrick didn't get to orchestrate the whole story. But we discussed more than just the stories she creates. We also discussed the issue of who should tell a story. The accusation of cultural appropriation, or even simple "best choice" can leave an author wondering if a story is "theirs to tell." Jane and I also explored that idea and agreed that because one person tells a story, doesn't mean someone else can't. Better that someone who doesn't "get" a culture tells the story than it be lost completely. And how better for someone to learn to appreciate another culture or belief system than to research and write about it? Why not preserve that story to intrigue someone else in the future and see where that person's research takes it? Ultimately, Jane Kirkpatrick writes about real people, in real times, and explores the reality that was their lives through the lens of history... and with a fictional pen. That perfect blending offers so much more than mere facts or imaginative fiction. It blends them both into a beautiful harmony of words, events, and stories. When not writing or researching, books Jane loves to read include historical fiction by authors such as Susan Meissner and mysteries by authors such as Louise Penny, Alan Bradley (the one she couldn't remember), and Donna Leone. I enjoyed discovering she reads one of my favorites--Jacqueline Windspear The Healing of Natalie Curtis by Jane Kirkpatrick Classically trained pianist and singer Natalie Curtis isolated herself for five years after a breakdown just before she was to debut with the New York Philharmonic. Guilt-ridden and songless, Natalie can't seem to recapture the joy music once brought her. In 1902, her brother invites her to join him in the West to search for healing. What she finds are songs she'd never before encountered--the haunting melodies, rhythms, and stories of Native Americans. But their music is under attack. The US government's Code of Offenses prohibits America's indigenous people from singing, dancing, or speaking their own languages as the powers that be insist on assimilation. Natalie makes it her mission not only to document these songs before they disappear but to appeal to President Teddy Roosevelt himself, who is the only man with the power to repeal the unjust law. Will she succeed and step into a new song . . . and a new future? Award-winning author Jane Kirkpatrick weaves yet another lyrical tale based on a true story that will keep readers captivated to the very end.
