We've seen the name Alex Forbes on songwriting credits for years, going back to the '80s with "Don't Rush Me" by Taylor Dayne and "Too Turned On" by Alisha. More recently, she popped up on a great song called "Sugar My" by Jann Klose, who told us about writing it with her.Our curiosity piqued, we invited Alex on the Songfacts Podcast to learn more, and we're sure glad we did. Alex is a student of the game and also a teacher, coaching songwriting at creativesongwriter.com. Things are not looking good as we start the second half of the year. The MSCI global stock index notched its biggest first-half of a year percentage drop on record on Thursday, while the U.S. benchmark S&P 500 had its steepest percentage drop for the first six months since 1970. The JSE all share fell 2.25% to 66,223.32 points yesterday, taking its losses for the month to 8.14% and 10.16% so far this year. Behind the slides have been concerns over the Ukraine-Russia war, soaring inflation, higher interest rates and, more recently, a possible U.S. recession. Stage 6 loadshedding is shredding the national mood. While Eskom's overpaid and bloated workforce continue to thumb their noses at management with an illegal and unprotected strike without any layoffs so far, for essential services, it's a joke sending many from stage 6 to terminal 6 at OR Tambo. To put the week into perspective Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas, Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes

The final report of the Zondo Commission into State Capture: with the handing over by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo of his 1800 page final report to President Cyril Ramaphosa in Wednesday the lengthy and tortuous road towards uncovering the truth about state capture corruption and fraud in SA has now reached a long-awaited formal interrogative conclusion. Although the Zondo Commission has often been criticized for not meeting its deadlines, after nearly four years of investigation by the Zondo Commission the massive and cumulative amount of evidence revealed by it nonetheless remains overwhelmingly large to manage. Globally, gauges of factory activity in Japan, Britain, the euro zone and United States all softened in June, with U.S. producers reporting the first outright drop in new orders in two years in the face of slumping confidence. read more Bonds rallied hard on hopes the bets on aggressive rate hikes would have to be curtailed, with German two-year yields down 22 basis points in their biggest drop since 2008. European Central Bank and Federal Reserve speakers will be watched closely later in the day, as will British retail sales data and German business confidence. Beyond that, the main worry is what it all means for company performance. Lots to discuss with Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
It's been frantic week in the political economy with the dirty tricks bag being emptied against a reforming president clamping down on corruption. Shortly after the arrest of former Transnet CEO Siyabonga Gama, disgraced former spy boss Arthur Fraser who was so central to former president Zuma's State Capture network as outlined by journalist Jacques Pouw in President's keepers, played the RET factions hand with curious looking charges of covering up theft against President Cyril Ramaphosa, which he has strongly denied while serious questions remain. Then this week the arrest of two of the Gupta brothers in Dubai. The NPA now has 60 days within which to apply for extradition and for all the unanswered questions seems seriously caught on the back foot here. And last night, the president played his own gambit, suspending public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane with immediate effect. The move came a day before judgment in her case today seeking to block him from doing so. It's a high stakes game that the ANC is playing with the future of the country and delicate balance of the economy which is starting to show some encouraging pockets of green shoots as reform in energy starts to take hold as evidenced by the registration of 16 IPPs under the 100MW self gen exemption this week. And with first quarter GDP growth surprising markedly but subsequent high frequency data in mining, manufacturing and confidence disappointing. Lots to discuss with Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes.
Asian equities rose in early trade this morning following a strong performance on Wall Street overnight ahead of a key US jobs data release, while crude held most of the previous day's gains after an Opec output hike disappointed traders. Still, a rally in beaten-down tech firms helped drive healthy gains on Wall Street, and Asia managed to ride on the coattails. While todays jobs data will be keenly watched. Hopes that OPEC and other major crude producers could ease pressure on inflation by ramping up output were dealt a blow when they agreed to pump just 50 percent more per month. Locally, all eyes were on the energy sector this week with the first signing of any power under the energy minister's 3-year tenure with the awarding of a 150MW renewable project to Scatec. And we have 16 projects under the 100MW cap listed on Nersa's schedule for Monday. Reform is happening. Lots to discuss with Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
As the country braces for another record petrol price next week, pressure is rising on the government to find another solution to provide some relief to under pressure consumers. The economic landscape is certainly shifting rapidly. The Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) widely expected decision last week to raise borrowing costs by another 50 basis points, mainly on worries of a wage-price spiral (or ‘second-round effects') developing; Standard and Poor Global Ratings lifting their outlook on SA's sovereign credit rating from stable to positive, although SA remains in ‘junk status'; the State rejecting the public service demand for 10% in its current negotiations with the public sector unions; Eskom intensifying its pattern of load-shedding; the looming fuel price ‘shock' next week, and sadly, recent further flood damage in KZN, all conspire to create huge dollops of uncertainty. Lots to discuss with Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes

The South African Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee is set to increase the repo rate tomorrow – with consensus among most analysts and economists that the hike will be larger than at previous meetings. A Reuters poll on Friday showed that a majority (16 out of 24) of analysts surveyed expect the MPC to increase the pace of its interest rate hiking cycle, with a 50 basis point hike pencilled in, to 4.75%. The Bureau of Economic Research said it has also shifted its stance from 25bps to a 50bps expected. The challenge for the bank is to strike the right balance between fighting exogenous inflation and supporting a weak economic recovery. Joining Michael Avery for this discussion is Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes and Annabel Bishop Chief Economist at Investec
Wild swings in equity markets persist with each leg taking the indexes lower over on the US with the S&P now close to confirming bear market territory. Cryptos crashed on unstable coins. Meanwhile the dollar surges and the rand's battle to keep up shows with a loss of 10.8% to the greenback in a month but ONLY down just over 1,4% year to date. In the political economy a lack of mining cadastre system 10 years after the failure of SAMRAD looms large over the Mining Indaba… Today we still do not even have an adjudicated tender - and the integrity of the process already reeks of self-dealing and corruption. And we've had updates on the much-vaunted operation Vulindlela and a rail policy White Paper, hoping to get rail reform back on track. Lots to discuss with Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
A day after celebrating the Federal Reserve's signal that it wouldn't be making any big moves, traders woke up on Thursday deciding that the central bank will struggle to fight high inflation amid the lingering threat of a recession. In a sharp about-face, investors sold stocks, bonds and cryptocurrencies on Thursday. The S&P 500 Index lost 3.6%, erasing about $1.3-trillion of market value, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 dropped 5.1%, the most since September 2020. The Dow Jones industrial average tumbled 3.12%. The positive sentiment melted after the BoE raised its rate for the fourth straight meeting, taking its benchmark to the highest in 13 years. Zondo's fourth report into State Capture and the NPA's victory in its battle to take on state capture corruption – by overturning a Gauteng High Court ruling that unfroze R1 billion in assets allegedly linked to the looting of Transnet – raise fresh hope on the accountability front While watching the ANC debate how to fix Eskom in parliament reminds one that the only power change the ruling party should be allowed near is at the ballot box. Let's welcome the panel Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
It's been a bad week for KZN, Eskom and the economy: The human and economic costs of the recent KZN rains and floods mount: in announcing another National State of Disaster this week to deal with the socio-economic consequences the recent overwhelming floods in KZN President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the National Treasury would make R1 billion immediately available for the disaster effort. He said that the Finance Minister would also approach Parliament for additional resources. What was also noteworthy about Ramaphosa's message was the acceptance that the public did not trust the government with emergency funds and resources, and that special steps would be taken to prevent any ‘looting' and corruption. The rand has been in freefall along with the national mood. To put this in perspective Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
South Africa seems stuck in the same negative feedback loop that the president seems unable to break. This government talks a good game but as we see with mining this week, a truly bizarre mining exploration strategy that will focus on junior exploration firms that are 51% black owned exclusively while we slip down to the bottom 10 worst mining destinations in the Fraser rankings says it all…and then the way third party access has almost been derailed by hostility towards the private sector and commercial bafoonery, simply boggles the mind. Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
Stocks headed for a weekly loss on Friday as the prospect of aggressive global rate hikes finally began to rattle investors, while bonds fell and the dollar looked set for its best week in a month. Federal Reserve policymakers are ready to start cutting the central bank's asset holdings from May and are prepared to move rates higher 50-basis-points at a time to curb inflation, meeting minutes and remarks from officials showed this week. The last two decades brought low inflation and a relatively peaceful world. Going forward geopolitical conflicts may become more and more volatile and have more of an impact on the whole world's economy as the chances of slowbalisation becomes increasingly likely. Let's welcome the panel Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
We've just finished one of the wildest quarters in recent memory with commodities enjoying the strongest start since World War 1. And in an effort to stop corruption the government announced plans to introduce a mirror accounting package in all SOE's where anyone can freely view details of every payment on the mirror site online. And if you believe that, you are the April fool To put the week in perspective Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reached 95% of the five-year, R1.2-trillion investment target he set when he launched his investment drive in 2018, and he expects that companies that have pledged new investments at his four conferences will give others the confidence to follow suit. The Reserve Bank hiked by 25 basis points as expected but the hawks are circling as two members called for 50…as Asian shares completed a second successive week of gains on Friday, though trading was choppy amid hawkish U.S. monetary policy, shifts in Chinese economic policy, and ongoing ructions in commodity markets due to the war in Ukraine. To put the week in perspective, Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes join Michael Avery.
The war in Ukraine enters its fourth weeks with mounting speculation that Russia is lying the groundwork for the use of chemical weapons. SA is one step closer to a future of widespread 5G telecommunications as MTN and Vodacom led buyers in the long-delayed radio frequency spectrum auction, which raised more for government coffers than had been expected. To talk about this Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes.
Asian shares extended a global slump on Friday after the fastest U.S. inflation in four decades and a hawkish European Central Bank (ECB) bolstered expectations for more aggressive rate hikes, hammering sentiment already stung by the Ukraine war. Sellers swarmed Chinese equity markets after U.S.-listed Chinese stocks tumbled following the naming of the first Chinese firms to be potentially de-listed in the United States. The Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its third week as oil has whipsawed from 139 dollars barrel to 110 this morning. While locally loadshedding has dampened the better than expected Business Confidence index out yesterday. Let's welcome the panel: Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
As the Ukrainian war enters its 9th day and bombs rain down on civilian targets and nuclear power plants are caught up in the crossfire while the West watches meekly on it's been another grim week for the world. The ANC's abstention at the UN vote a foghorn of the country's complicity. The Constitutional Court's dismissal last week of the public sector unions' appeal clears the way for the tough negotiations on public sector wages that still lie ahead. And the desilting deluge at the JSE hits crisis levels with the announcement by PSG this week that it no longer sees value in remaining listed. Let's welcome the panel: Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes.
On Thursday, 5 March 2020, 651 days ago, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases confirmed that a suspected case of COVID-19 had tested positive. It feels like this news report took place years ago and that COVID-19 has been with the world for much, much longer. Now, 21 months into the pandemic, 251m confirmed cases of COVID-19, 5m deaths, and 7.1bn vaccine doses later on a global scale, many parts of the world remain in limbo and struggling to recover. It's time to consider the new reality that is emerging in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and ask what it means for politics, economics, business. Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
What's happening in the markets now? England is going under tougher COVID-19 curbs, BoJO is getting roasted for last year's Christmas party while Christmas parties are being cancelled across Europe and the United States, and Jefferies became the first big Wall Street bank to send employees home. But with focus returning to central banks and inflation, the rally has lost some of its edge. European and U.S. futures are flatlining, and a global equity index paused near two-week highs. The rand, meanwhile, ended a three-day winning streak, reaching an intraday low of R15.99/$, dropping almost 2% as manufacturing output slumped far more sharply than expected in October. Data showed industrial production fell 8.9% year on year, versus economists' predictions for a 1.4% decline, probably because of a strike in the steel and engineering sector. It's more Bleak Friday than Black Friday… not good news for the rand or our tourism sector as the UK places the country temporarily back under red list travel restrictions after scientists raised the alarm over the new Covid-19 variant yesterday afternoon. And the rand has weakened to over R16 to the dollar. About 35% of South Africans are fully vaccinated, higher than in most other African nations, but half the government's year-end target. It has averaged 106,000 doses a day in the past 15 days in a nation of 60-million people. We need to start seeing an urgent increase in vaccination rates to avoid the worst impacts of a new variant on our healthcare system and economy. To put the week in perspective Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas Head of Galileo Securities; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
The rand broke a two-day losing streak on Thursday as investors welcomed the medium term budget policy statement (MTBPS), staging a mild recovery after falling the most in more than eight months in the previous session. The JSE and local bonds were also heartened by the statement. Finance minister Enoch Godongwana outlined a better fiscal position in his maiden medium-term budget and said he would continue the fiscal consolidation outlined by his predecessor, Tito Mboweni, in an effort to reduce the budget deficit and stabilise SA's high debt. Asian share prices advanced in early trade this morning as a shock from a surprisingly strong U.S. inflation reading ebbed, with investors now hopeful that the worst price hikes could be soon over To put things into perspective Michael Avery is joined by Warwick Lucas, Chief Investment Officer at Galileo Asset managers; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University & Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes
Asian shares and U.S. stock futures slipped in early trade this morning, as Amazon and Apple quarterly earnings bucked a recent strong trend and growth and inflation fears continued to weigh. Investors, particularly in bond and currency markets, are also worried about varied responses by central banks worldwide to rising inflation. At least Mineral resources & energy minister Gwede Mantashe announced 25 new renewable energy projects that will deliver wind and solar energy at record low prices for SA. So the question must be asked, if it's cheap now, and it can be brought on stream much, much quicker than new coal, gas or nuclear, why don't we revisit the IRP and raise procurement allocations of RE urgently? To put things into perspective Michael Avery is joined by Nesan Nair, senior portfolio manager at Sasfin; Raymond Parsons, professor in the School of Business and Governance at Northwest University and Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at Alex Forbes

Today we're joined by Alex Forbes from CreativeSongwriter.com. Alex has over 100 releases to her name including several Billboard-charting singles as well as tracks heard often on the radio and TV. She's taught songwriting at NYU's Steinhardt school and countless workshops and songwriting camps and collaborated with top musicians including Cyndi Lauper. She is the author of "Write Songs, Right Now" and as you're going to learn in this conversation she has a really sharp and refreshing attitude to the art and craft of songwriting. In this conversation we talk about: • Whether it was persistence or momentary inspiration that produced Alex’s first big radio hit. • The most important thing a beginning songwriter should do on day one, and the #1 thing you can do to improve your odds of succeeding with it, and • The four elements she thinks are essential for a song to be really great. It should come as no surprise to regular listeners of this show that as someone invited to be a guest here she shares our encouraging and inclusive attitude to music-making. Far from teaching that song-writing is just for the gifted few, Alex teaches that anybody can and should give it a try - and her enthusiasm is infectious so we think there’s a good chance you’ll go away from this episode inspired to try writing a song or two yourself!
