ActionSA hits out against a R16 million fleet procurement scandal ActionSA has hit out at Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo for allegedly shielding Emfuleni Local Municipality over a R16 million fleet procurement scandal. The party says the municipality paid for 17 cars but received only six, with one later vanishing, yet provided no proper answers on investigations or recovery of the funds. ActionSA is accusing the MEC of allegedly accepting a copied-and-pasted response from the municipal manager that simply cited "internal processes" instead of opening a criminal case as required by law. Elvis Presslin spoke to Action SA's Gauteng Caucus Leader, Funzi Ngobeni to elaborate further about their concerns and Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesperson, Makhosonke Sangweni

South Africans are facing an impending and massive R8-a-litre fuel price shock when prices are adjusted next month. This spike is a direct consequence of the prolonged war in Iran, which has driven the Rand cost of oil up by 40%, jumping from R954 to R1,328 a barrel. The higher oil price - now above $80 a barrel from below $60 a week ago - is significantly impacting global inflation expectations, triggering nervous trading on Wall Street overnight. Also in Today's Daybreak: Global and local markets are under pressure, with the JSE down 0.75%, mainly due to a 2.5% fall in resource stocks. The Rand opened at R16.60 against the US dollar. Gold and Bitcoin remain steady at $5,150 and $71,250, respectively. John Maytham is joined by Adjunct Professor Alex van den Heever, who presently holds the Chair of Social Security Systems Administration and Management Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, to unpack the financial implosion at Johannesburg’s City Power. With a staggering R16.3 billion negative bank balance, under-collection of revenue, and internal reports allegedly buried by Mayor Dada Morero, the city’s ability to deliver services now hangs in the balance. Van den Heever weighs in on the legal and governance implications and whether this crisis signals broader systemic failure. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”.
