3 Floyds Mango Foeder Fiend is an American Wild Ale by style. This fiendish Wild Ale was aged for six months in our wooden foeders and brewed with mangos and fresh mango juice, along with a mixed-yeast we propagated in-house. This craft beer is 7% ABV.
For episode 300 we have a stacked panel in to discuss one of the most precipitous rise and falls in modern craft beer - The American Wild / Sour AleNo punches are pulled as we discuss the origins of these beers, why they became the darling of the craft beer world, and their fall from grace - all with input from people who were there to experience it first hand. Plus we talk about why this fall might ultimately be a good thing, and reasons to feel optomistic about the future of some of the most complex and beautiful beers ever created. Featuring Paul Arney of Ale Apothecary, Vinnue Cilurzo of Russian River, Ron Jeffries of Jolly Pumpkin, and John Laffler of Off Color.
As if barrel-aging alone wasn't enough, breweries these days are taking beers that have already experienced an extended oak rest and dumping them into another barrel to age even further. We sample five beers that result from this process (or something similar) to see if all that patience pays off in the end. This final installment of Barrel-Aged December features two legit top ten candidates for beers of the year, and we attempt to extend our merchandising output. And as if two barrels for every beer wasn't enough, Ryan has brought the extra heat for this one: two Craigs. Get ready for the Craigboard. This week we get spontaneous! If you can count a planned pairing of Bell's and Walt Whitman as spontaneous. Bell's limited release of Walt Whitman inspired beers concludes with their VII: Spontaneous Me beer, an American Wild Ale. Just as wild is this week's poet, the one and only Walt Whitman, yawping his poetry ways through Taylor who reads the longest(?) poem in Prose and Bros history. We'll discuss Derek Jeter, Michigan's largest independent brewery, and whether it would be awesome to have the name George Washington. Join us for a truly inspired pairing!Cheers!

It's finally here. Day 24 of our 2020 Advent calendar. We end it with a great beer The Ale Apothecary The Beer Formally Know As La Tache. It's an American Wild Ale made with Cascade hops and aged in oak barrels. It's a great way to end the calendar and start the Christmas festivities. We hope you've enjoyed our calendar this year as much as we enjoyed making it. Have a God Jul and Merry Christmas.
More bonus content for ya!It seems that Wild Ales, blending and barrel ageing is a hot topic in craft beer right now. Names like Wildflower Brewing & Blending, Garage Project, Dollar Bill Brewing Pty Ltd, Jester King Brewery and Casey Brewing and Blending are on the tip of the tongues of the pointy end of the craft beer market. Will Tatchell from Van Dieman Brewing released 3 Wild Ales this week. He calls them his Australian Spontaneous Ales, and they are made with a mix of local produce, local microbes and French oak casks.I invited him on to this video chat to explain each of the beers, how they were made, what's in them, and the various complex characteristics, as we drank them together!Lovers of advanced brewing techniques, or magical beers, you will love this!http://www.vandiemanbrewing.com.au/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTubeRate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottomOr Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast playerCheck out my website
I don't know if we've ever reviewed Mast Landing Brewing Co on the show before but after trying Shake Up Your Bones, we need to try more. This DIPA is brewed with Nelson, Citra and Simcoe hops. It's a rich, fruity treat. Shenk is a brewery out of Bratislava, Slovakia. They've rebrewed their American Wild Ale simply called S. This is the first time it's been released outside the country and Sweden got a few bottles to try. We're always excited to try new breweries and especially ones that make American Wild Ales.

In the most lengthy Crafty Beer Girls Podcasts to date, your hosts, Jenni Shafer and Lauren Lerch, kick things off with an interview involving Jennifer Hamilton. Jennifer (along with her husband Jeff) own and operate Utah's only dedicated hard cider production facility and taphouse, Mountain West Hard Cider. Incidentally, their corporate office conference room, has been a makeshift recording studio for several episodes of the Crafty Beer Girls Podcast. During their interview, they dive into a very interesting and insightful conversation regarding the recent changes in Utah beer laws that happened on November 1st. Utah's law on alcohol content has been raised from 4.0% alcohol by volume to 5.0% alcohol by volume. This momentous change has either been loved and embraced OR downright despised by many in the Utah craft beer industry and the Utah craft beer community. The girls also sample a host of beers. Including several from the Utah craft beer breweries that took home medals from this year's Great American Beer Festival. Five local breweries took home six medals this year. The most awards won by Utah craft beer breweries since 2014. Those breweries were Shades Brewing (Gold), TF Brewing (Silver), Red Rock Brewing (Silver and Bronze) Squatters Craft Beers (Silver) and Lever Crossing Brewing (Bronze). The girls even try a delicious American Wild Ale (snagged by Jenni Shafer during a bike trip she took in New Mexico) from 2019 Great American Beer Festival winner (for Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year), Rowley Farmhouse Ales. The beer, entitled "Songs Of Our Own", was a collaboration beer. Here is a detailed description borrowed from Untappd: "We've been passionate about brewing spontaneously fermented ales for many years, as this is a process that has not only historical significance, but also carries a degree of romance that cannot be matched via traditional industrial brewing techniques. Songs of Our Own is our first commercial foray into spontaneous fermentation, and was completed with the help of the kind folks at 12 West Brewing Company in Mesa, Arizona. We were fortunate enough to have them come up to Santa Fe with their mobile coolship in early 2018. It is the first commercially produced coolship inoculated beer brewed in the state of New Mexico. We aren't calling this a Méthode Traditionnelle beer by any stretch, but simply a start to what we hope to be an annual tradition of local spontaneous fermentations for us. After 16 months of aging in wine barrels, this beer underwent additional refermentation in the barrel with tangerines, and was finished in 750 mL bottles with local wildflower honey. We are happy to release this as our 3rd anniversary beer, and hope you enjoy it as much as we have waiting for it to come around."
Orpheus Brewing and The Woodlands talk sour and wild beers Wild and sour beers continue to grow in popularity. From "simple" sour beers like Berliner Weisse and Gose to complex, spontaneously fermented ales with funky, earthy, cheesy character. There's a huge variety out there. When you think of SweetWater Brewery, you may not think of sour beers - but you should. Nick Burgoyne, Lead Brewer and Blender at SweetWater's The Woodlands focuses on brewing wild, sour, funky and barrel-aged beers. He recently won a Silver Medal for Cambium (an American Wild Ale) at the US Open Beer Championship. Orpheus Brewing opened in Atlanta in 2014. Brewmaster and President Jason Pellett had a goal to introduce an approachable, sour beer that anyone could afford and his Atlanta (Tart Plum Saison) did just that. In the past 4 years, Orpheus has brewed many more sour beers, and recently won Bronze for Lambic-style Ales at the Great American Beer Fest. Burgoyne and Pellett join us this week to talk about the adventure of expanding the acceptance of sour beers. We talk simple kettle sours like Berliner Weisse and Gose, and more complex sours like Lambic and Gueze. We also discuss the challenges facing American brewers as they mimic these styles and try to name them without offending traditional Belgian brewers, and how that brought about the move towards the Méthode Traditionnelle under the guidance of HORAL (High Council for Artisinal Lambic Beers). As we sip through several beers, the conversation moves to the process of traditional spontaneous brewing and blending sour beers. The show was taped at SweetWater Brewery during ZCON Atlanta's brewery night. We talk with Z Car Club Association President Chris Karl about Z Cars, the club and ZCON - their annual national convention. We’ve been smitten with The Mitten for as long as we’ve loved beer, because Michigan just might be the best beer state in the Midwest. We stick to the western coast of MI as Craig gathered four interviews and five beers for this 11th stop in our ongoing State Show series. You’ll hear from John Lustina from Beer Church about how sometimes a good concept needs to be rushed; David Coyle from Arclight on their hopes for Chicago distribution; David Cockell from Watermark on how his biochemistry degree helps him keep yeast happy; and Mitch Ermatinger from Speciation on deriving character from patience. We also do our best to review these beers before Ryan succumbs to death by heartburn and before the new Pudgy Craig gets audibly winded. There’s also talk of communion wafer smells, cheesecake love, and an update on Ryan’s brewery concept. If you seek a pleasant state show, listen about you.
