You should do your own research and make your own independent decisions when considering any investment decision.Don't miss an episode from Climate Capital! On today's episode, Ben Christensen, founder of Cambium, joins CC Pod with host Kirthika to discuss Carbon Smart™ wood—transforming waste into sustainable materials at scale.Wood is ubiquitous in our lives, from the floors we walk on to the furniture we use. However, the traditional wood supply chain is fraught with inefficiencies and environmental concerns. Currently, the U.S. consumes about 60 billion board feet of lumber annually, and a staggering 58% of this could potentially be replaced with reclaimed wood. Yet, less than 1% of wood used today is recycled. This presents a massive opportunity for Cambium to step in and make a significant impact.Ben explains that the wood industry often relies on virgin timber, which can lead to deforestation and other unsustainable practices. Cambium aims to substitute this with salvaged wood—material that is currently wasted but can be repurposed. The company focuses on three main sources of reclaimed wood: unmanaged urban forests, deconstructed buildings, and biomass from forest management practices aimed at reducing fire hazards.Cambium's mission is to simplify the use of waste materials at scale. To achieve this, the company is building a robust supply chain platform that connects large buyers—such as architects, builders, and furniture manufacturers—with reclaimed wood sources. Some key technological components of Cambium's approach:* Supply Chain Management: Cambium is developing technology to streamline the logistics of sourcing, moving, and processing reclaimed wood. This includes tools for lumber and sawmill industries to manage their inventory and capture waste wood effectively.* Data Analytics: By creating a data layer that tracks material movement through the supply chain, Cambium can provide live carbon reporting. This transparency allows stakeholders to make informed decisions about sourcing and sustainability.* Local Processing: One of the critical innovations is the focus on local processing of reclaimed wood. By reducing the distance wood travels—often from thousands of miles to just 20 miles—Cambium minimizes carbon emissions associated with transportation.* Circular Economy: Cambium emphasizes full circularity in its operations. The company not only aims to reuse wood but also reinvests in new tree planting initiatives, ensuring that the cycle of sustainability continues.Cambium has achieved several significant milestones since its inception, including a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $18,000 by selling cutting boards made from reclaimed wood. The company has also received grants to explore the potential of urban wood waste and has begun processing millions of board feet of material from waste streams.Looking ahead, Cambium plans to scale its operations nationally, focusing on expanding its supply chains and enhancing its technology platform. Ben emphasizes the importance of internal processes and effective communication as the company grows, ensuring that they can maintain high standards of sustainability and efficiency. To learn more about Cambium, visit https://cambiumcarbon.com/. 60 billion board feet of wood products are used in the U.S. every year, a majority produced by fresh logging and shipped from across the globe, while simultaneously, millions of tons of local wood waste ends up in landfills off-gassing carbon as it rots. But that inefficiency could rapidly change thanks to Cambium and its CEO and co-founder, Ben Christensen, who are revolutionizing lumber supply chains with their Carbon Smart Wood™ and Traece operating system. Cambium reclaims fallen or removed trees that would typically end up in landfills and turns them into a locally sourced, carbon negative material that could potentially cut global carbon emissions by 4%. The firm is also using new technology to better track the trees during the supply chain process, increasing transparency, traceability, and sustainability. Cambium is also just getting started, partnering with mega brands like Microsoft and Patagonia in recent years and continuing to develop their clean technology and expand their markets. Ben Christensen is an accomplished ultra marathon runner, so it's probably fitting that the company he runs is built with long-haul sustainability and scalability in mind. Surrounded by forests and the outdoors as a child, Ben went to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies to pursue his passion, and it was there that the idea for Cambium first took root. Not long after, Ben and his co-founder, Theo Hooker, a childhood friend and fellow ultra marathon runner, were racing to transform waste wood into valuable building materials. Hear Ben share how his love for the outdoors turned into a revolutionary sustainable materials startup, why wood waste is such a massive problem (and also a potential market), and what carbon smart wood means for the future of lumber, supply chains, and our planet. Landfills receive millions of tons of wood waste every year. Most of the waste can be recycled and repurposed; however, the lack of infrastructure in this sector means that the useful material doesn't always reach the right people. Today, we're diving into the future of sustainable wood sourcing with a true innovator: Ben Christensen, CEO and Co-Founder of Cambium Carbon, who was recognized by Forbes 30 under 30 for his team's social impact.  Ben holds a Master's of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Growing up in a woodshop with a carpenter father, it wasn't until he was in grad school that he realized the massive problem of urban wood waste. He knew there was an opportunity to create change, leading him to start Cambium Carbon.  Cambium Carbon makes it easy for large companies to source materials locally and use waste-to-value materials, primarily focusing on wood. He established the company to combat climate change and revitalize communities.  In this episode, we'll explore Ben's journey, Cambium Carbon's mission, and the role of the circular economy in combating climate change. How can we build better supply chains for the built world? When it comes to the inconceivably vast amount of wood we use in our buildings, one “simple” way is to use less virgin material and use more wood that would otherwise not make it to market. Instead it would be destined to decompose and emit its carbon into the sky. What if, instead, the forgotten trees were salvaged and turned into valuable, usable lumber? This is a big idea whose time has come. Still, having a powerful idea is only the first step. Making it happen in the real world is the other side of the story. Starting with a focus on a smarter, more transparent wood supply chain, the ambitious team at Cambium Carbon are making powerful change happen in the human side of the wood ecosystem in the AEC. Their work is a key support for firms committed to sustainability. Join Kristof in a thoughtful conversation with Ben Christensen to learn more about what Ben and his team are doing to find wood impacted by the four Ds: disease, decay, disaster, and development and keep it out of landfills. Instead of landfills the wood goes back into the built world for generations to come. The company Living Carbon was mentioned during this episode as an interesting website to check out!Ben ChristensenBen, a Forbes 30 Under 30 lister and TedX speaker, is a thought-leader and industry expert. He is the CEO and Co-founder of Cambium, a climate-tech start-up backed by Joe Tsai, Steve Case, and many others. By working with cities to divert wood waste, local manufacturers to create sustainable products, and demand partners for offtake they are creating a new regenerative supply chain for urban wood. We're a public benefit company, and we focus on helping the communities that we work with, our milling partners, and the different supply partners we work with across the country. Then we reinvest in the forests where we see that salvage wood comes from. We have a 15% tree planting commitment. We work with many amazing local planting organizations, and anytime we sell the table or wood product or flooring, we put that directly back into community planting. Most of Mary's professional life has revolved around succession. In the midst of taking over her father's advisory firm, Mary linked up with the successor of her uncle's firm and merged the two businesses to form Cambium Wealth & Legacy Strategies. Now, although years from her own retirement, Mary has trained a successor ready to take the reins. Long before she spearheaded the impressive merger and developed the professional philosophies she lives by today, Mary was a biology student looking for a way into the financial space. Rather than a path padded with nepotism, Mary was offered a minimum wage filing position at her father's firm.  While it wasn't the pinnacle of glamor, she learned an invaluable lesson that transformed her approach to running a business – there's often a wall between employees and employers. As an employer, it's important to break down that wall and create a culture where feedback is both appreciated and expected.  In this episode, Steve and Mary discuss how to successfully merge two firms, Cambium's evolution from investment-focused to planning-centric, the value of work-life harmony, the secret weapon that guides client conversations, and the invaluable advice passed down to Mary from generations of advisors past.    Key Takeaways [01:17] - An introduction to Mary and how Cambium was named. [03:50] - How Mary spearheaded a successful merger.  [09:18] - Cambium's core values and how to promote work-life balance.  [12:15] - How to hire employees who fit your company's core values.  [13:54] - The difference between culture, values, and client experience.  [15:02] - How Cambium evolved from investment-focused to planning-centric.  [17:50] - When to incorporate the next generation of clients into the financial fold.  [18:55] - How Mary matches clients with advisors.  [20:10] - How to avoid burnout.  [20:55] - The unique way Cambium expands its clientele.  [24:21] - How Mary creates a culture where everyone is comfortable giving feedback.  [28:03] - The best advice from Mary's predecessors.    Quotes [16:27] - “We've been able to take the focus off the investments – knowing that we're doing a great job there – and put the focus on what are the problems the client is trying to solve.” ~ Mary Huntley  [28:30] - “My Dad and uncle have told me ad nauseam, if you're not talking to your clients, somebody else is.
