The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a whirlwind of festivities, family gatherings, and festive feasts. Hormone health is linked with mental health for many reasons. One of which is that hormone imbalance can also cause decreased levels of serotonin, the “feel good” hormone. Symptoms related to hormone imbalance such as weight, acne, unwanted hair growth and hair loss can contribute to feelings of low self-esteem, low self-confidence and over time these factors can contribute to anxiety and depression. My anxiety came from constantly seeing my hair falling out and it got to the point where I did not even want to look at myself in my mirror. While I lived in NY for 4 winters, I struggled with seasonal depression. I battled against low self esteem and poor body image all my life until just a couple of years ago. During those times, I did not know who to turn to or how to even begin sharing how I felt. I wish talking about these things were normalized, that's why I am now using my platforms to break these stigmas and normalize these conversations. In this week's episode I collaborated with Nidhi Patel a Licensed Master Social Worker and we discussed: Mental health through a woman's lifespan South Asian cultural taboos how to talk about mental health to reduce stigma tips and resources to get help Nidhi Patel is a Licensed Master Social Worker in Georgia. She currently serves as a Behavioral Health Specialist and is working towards her full clinical licensure. She does individual counseling and facilitates groups, trainings, and workshops in the community addressing a variety of mental health topics. A holistic approach to conceiving also takes into consideration the spiritual side. I did not understand or really believe in the spiritual side of things until just the last couple of years. Science and evidence-based medicine in combination with the spiritual side can give you the results you are hoping for and maybe even quicker. A few years ago when I was hoping to conceive, I was struggling with irregular cycles and I did not even know if I was ovulating. I had put a lot of pressure on myself and my body, which of course did not help the situation. I can see how helpful it would have been then if I had known about energy and the ability to use my intuition to help me. In this week's YouTube / Podcast Episode, our guest speaker Hilery Johnson shares her expertise on calling in your baby. Hilery is a spiritual healer and the founder of BringInBaby, an innovative company that shows women how to holistically increase their chances of pregnancy. She works with clients of all genders who are trying to conceive and specializes in clients who want to have a baby without sacrificing their careers. Hilery brings to her clients more than 15 years of training and experience as an intuitive and as a spiritual midwife—an expert who communicates and works with the spirit of the baby. Her clients have become pregnant after working with her whether they have undergone multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF, are healing from a miscarriage, or have recently decided that they are ready for a baby. She also teaches tools for communicating better, managing emotions, and honing intuition to new mothers and children. Hilery's expertise has been featured on BossBabe's blog, as well podcasts like Hello BeYouTiful, Hi Felicia, The SoulFull Veda Show, and Susan Bostwick's Your Own Birth Workshop. In this episode we discuss what spiritual healing and energy clearing is and tips on how you can develop your intuition and ultimately how you can use these tools to conceive or call in anything else you'd like! Incorporating self-care has been a journey for over 33 years… so basically my whole life!...and it still continues to be a journey. Before I would feel really guilty about doing anything for myself. I believe this stemmed from not seeing other women around me prioritizing themselves and their needs. Growing up as a South Asian, our culture encourages women to sacrifice their needs for the sake of their family. Even in my own life I did this, I was the “go to” person everyone relied on and I continued to give myself until eventually it started affecting my own health negatively, both physically and mentally. I was starting to gain weight again and I was moody, angry and resentful. Couple of years ago, when I got tired of feeling this way, I realized I had to make some changes to take care of myself. Over time I started to instill some boundaries and prioritize my own health. Through this I realized the people that genuinely cared about me supported me. I also realized the people who were benefiting from my lack of boundaries and who I was constantly taking care of were actually upset. These people made me feel guilty and I eventually realized it was just a one-way relationship. Another lesson I learned is that when I took care of myself, I was actually able to give the best version of myself to my closest loved ones. This time when I was giving, it came without expectations or resentment and it improved my relationships with the people that genuinely cared about me. From the changes I've made, I have also been able to inspire my loved ones to prioritize their health and self care too…now they are also able to give their best selves to their loved ones… and the positive ripple effect continues! I hope by sharing these two big lessons from my journey, you can start to shift your mindset around self-care. Self care can be anything you want it to be. It's not about spending money on nails or massages but also about setting boundaries and prioritizing your health, which can include getting more sleep or engaging in activities you enjoy to de-stress. ✨Additional Resources: - Set up your FREE 30 minute consultation for 1:1 coaching here - Get the "My 2024 Hormone Health Journal" here -Get the "How to Enjoy Indian Food Guilt-Free with PCOS" Mini-course here ✨Free Resources: - Watch the "Freedom from PCOS Symptoms - Create a Sustainable Lifestyle with PCOS in 5 Steps." Having PCOS can take a toll on someone's mental health. I remember the anxiety I felt to shower and even look in the mirror when my hair was falling out uncontrollably. I remember the anxiety of anticipating the comments people may make about my acne or weight. When I lived in NY, I used to experience seasonal depression each winter. There are some external factors that can contribute to mental health disorders with PCOS but there are also some biological factors that can too. This is why women with PCOS are 3x more likely to experience anxiety, depression and eating disorders. In this week's episode on the Podcast and YouTube channel, learn more about the link between mental health and PCOS. I share the causes as well as 7 tips for management!Links are in the bio to listen or watch via your favorite platform! In this week's episode, I´m diving into an important aspect of PCOS management: Lab testing. I believe knowledge is power, especially when it comes to understanding our own body. I'll be sharing insights on the top 10 labs that I highly recommend for PCOS testing and monitoring. However, today, I won't be discussing specific lab values and their "normal" ranges because those can vary based on different factors. Instead, my focus will be on understanding the significance of each test—why it's essential, why you should request it, and why monitoring is crucial for managing PCOS effectively.
