The spread of deforestation in the South American rainforest has been destroying the homes of local wildlife. Unbeknownst to the outside world, a race of giant insects with shapeshifting abilities plot to infiltrate Small Town USA and execute a nuclear holocaust in retaliation. Directed by Michael Lehmann of "Heathers" fame, comes another satirical cult classic lost in the shuffle of the early 90s due to poor marketing and the collapse of New World Pictures. Join Dick, Jane, Sally, and Johnny as they try to navigate the American dream and the trials and tribulations of life as humans.

Michael Lehmann is probably most noted for directing the black comedy Heathers. He also directed 40 Days and 40 Nights, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Hudson Hawk, Meet the Applegates, Airheads and Because I Said So. He also directs for television and has worked on the short-lived HBO comedy series The Comeback and NBC's The West Wing. He has guest directed on The Larry Sanders Show, Watching Ellie and Century City. Other credits include Big Love, True Blood, Californication, Snowfall, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Veronica Mars, Jessica Jones, Blunt Talk, Tyrant, House of Lies and many more.

Dear Diary, Heather told us we needed to discuss this biting black comedy about a bunch of swatch-dogs, Diet Cokeheads and... an intelligently-crafted film which subsequently influenced countless other teen movies. Heathers (1988) is chocked full of subversive, quick-witted commentary, savage humor and one memorable quote after another. The upchuck factor is low, but the harshness of high school life in Heathers is still epic. ▶️ (00:45) Looking to escape her elitist high school clique, a bright and troubled teen gets roped in by her psychopathic boyfriend to murder their popular classmates, framing each to look like a suicide. So, why does Heathers still matter from a cultural and storytelling standpoint? We’ll touch on the movie’s first-time director, Michael Lehmann, writer Daniel Waters, the cast, the overall themes of the film and why the subject matter is even more controversial today. ▶️ (34:46) Picks of the Week: Both Picks deal with the disruption of normalcy in American life. Lehmann’s ridiculous, yet worthwhile second film, Meet the Applegates (1991), follows a family of insects disguised as an all-American family looking for nuclear power access to destroy humans.
