Nearly half of women have dense breasts but many of them won't know it, as only a mammogram will confirm if you have them. That same mammogram may not be able to pick out whether there's any cancer there as only an ultrasound will find tumours in dense breasts. Having dense breasts does increase your risk of breast cancer so it's time more people know about them.In this episode, Victoria talks to her fellow TV presenter Julia Bradbury, who found a lump in one of her dense breasts in 2020 but her diagnosis was only confirmed after an ultrasound picked up what the mammograms couldn't. Julia and Victoria also talk to Cheryl Cruwys who founded Breast Density Matters UK, and get advice from Fleur Kilburn-Toppin, a consultant radiologist.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. This episode is not about secondaries – that was Series 1, Episode 7. Nor is it about the fear of it coming back- that was Series 2, Episode 2. There's a lot of help and information out there for women who have to undergo chemotherapy. Perhaps there's a bit less about radiotherapy for two reasons - it is not perceived as being as debilitating as chemo and possibly because it comes afterwards, hopefully when you are almost on the ‘home straight'.For many women it isn't straightforward, neither mentally nor physically. In this episode Victoria talks to women who tell their stories and how they developed coping mechanisms for handling their radiotherapy programme joined by an expert in breast cancer and radiotherapy.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. We don't talk about ‘fighting' the disease on this podcast but we do talk about how people are left changed by the experience of having had breast cancer. Many women decide that post-cancer they want to do something different- that from now on, it's about experiences and living life to the full. In short, to be bold and brave. In this episode Victoria – who stripped off twice for the “Full Monty” series, wrote a book and appeared on “I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here” after her recovery, talks to women who have embraced similar values and done things differently - celebrating their ‘new' lives. It is an uplifting listen and shows that the future can be bright, even when you think it won't be.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. Everyone's cancer journey is unique and in this episode you'll hear how Victoria's guests demonstrate that by talking frankly about their differing responses to being told they had breast cancer. The fact that two of those guests are sisters only adds to the point. Cathy and Tracey - two siblings of seven - were diagnosed a few months apart and despite their closeness, they got on it in different ways.Their stories are uplifting and poignant and they are joined by Jackie, Future Dreams' Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist - who explains how different people react differently to everything from diagnosis, treatment and their post-cancer lives.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. Victoria was diagnosed with her breast cancer in 2015 and she didn't have an obvious lump. She was told she had a form of breast cancer called “lobular” and in this episode she is joined by an expert to explain what it is, how you can spot it, and what the treatment options are.Victoria's other guests are women like her, who until diagnosis, were unaware of what Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (to give it its full title) was. A breast cancer diagnosis can make you feel like you have no control. Every decision is in the hands of the experts who are now taking care of you. But there is a way when your voice can be heard- that you work with the professionals who will save your life and make sure your opinion is taken on board. In this episode, Victoria talks about “advocacy” or to put it another way, standing up for yourself. That doesn't mean being obstructive or challenging the doctors at every turn, it means simply making sure you have a say in your treatment and its aftermath.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. Getting a breast cancer diagnosis is traumatic enough when it comes as a surprise. What if you know there's a higher chance you might get breast cancer because of a genetic fault? Not only that, it might get passed on to your children. If you have close relatives who have had breast or ovarian cancer you may have a higher risk of developing the disease yourself. Most cases of breast cancer don't run in families but if there's a problem with the BRCA 1 or 2 genes, your chances of getting it go up.In this remarkable episode, Victoria speaks to three women from the same family. A mother and two daughters. They have either had breast cancer or have been told there's a higher chance of getting it. And a young woman who had a preventative mastectomy to lower her risk.Brought to you by the Future Dreams charity, "And Then Came Breast Cancer" is for everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease. DANIEL: STANDING STRONG. Part 3 - Future Dreams (Daniel 2:31-49) Our world is facing an unbelievably difficult time of distress and confusion. We are emerging from a two year worldwide pandemic and now are facing, at least the possibility, of a worldwide war. All the while there is a culture war that challenges our Biblical morals. Jesus said in the last days the world would be in a state just like this. The Book of Daniel was written for such a time. It teaches us how to face the greatest challenges with conviction, resolve and faith.
This week we cover the idea of our higher self and what that looks like. I go over traits that my higher self (ideal version of myself) has like balance in different areas of life, keeping promises to myself + others, prioritizing wellbeing, etc. I also read about and react to so many of your higher selfs that you wrote in. We manifest together, discuss what we're working on, and dream about the future. “Chemo was really hard. But there were really good days too – they weren't the best feeling healthy days – but there was something that happened on those days. You suddenly have the shift in perspective of appreciating the smallest things, because when you have something that's knocking you, sideways, weekly – I was having chemo every week for 12 weeks – when you have a good moment, the world is more colorful, and everything becomes more incredible. And I got to push my kids on a swing and I was out of bed! All those things become just what living is all about.” - Carly Moosah This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Finding Unexpected Joy, hosted by Sarah Davis. The Finding Unexpected Joy miniseries explores the idea that joy can happen in the midst of grief, and that maybe we don't know yet what might come out of our grief journeys. In this episode, Sarah talks with Carly Moosah about her mom's cancer diagnosis and then coming to terms with her own, her perspective on joy in the midst of cancer treatment, and advice she provides for others undergoing cancer treatment. Carly is the co-founder of www.keepemquiet.com, a writer/blogger, breast cancer advocate & survivor, and mum of two. She's based out of London. Carly and Sarah talk about: Carly's family history of breast cancer and her mother's experience Carly's fear of cancer and how she shifted her perception toward that of fascination How she speaks to her kids about cancer, versus how her mom spoke to her Cancer's warrior mode Carly's advice for listeners Related resources: Carly's Instagram Carly's Linktr.ee Carly's interview on The Motherless Mum Guilt, article in Future Dreams by Carly Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe To find out more about this episode and subscribe to the newsletter, visit the show notes.
