The rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape of recent years can be hard to follow. With economic conflicts between global superpowers and violent clashes across multiple continents, today's events can seem starkly different from the trajectory of past decades. So, how can a deeper understanding of energy and resource security help us make sense of these chaotic trends? In this discussion, Nate is joined by Art Berman, Michael Every, and Izabella Kaminska for a broad exploration of the complex relationship between energy, geopolitics, and economic strategy. Together, they provide valuable insights into the consequences of deindustrialization, the impact of military spending, and the urgent need to reassess strategies as resources dwindle and geopolitical tensions rise. How is the use of fear as a political tool intertwined with the challenges of trust and disinformation in navigating turbulent international conflicts? What role is the race for Artificial General Intelligence and Quantum Computing playing in these rapidly changing situations? And ultimately, what should we, as citizens, be expecting from our leaders at the global stage as the struggle for power in the 21st century continues to intensify? (Conversation recorded on March 10th, 2025) About the Guests: Arthur E. Berman is a petroleum geologist with over 40 years of oil and gas industry experience. Whoever controls the energy supply controls the new world order.Russia and China are deepening their relationship, Western allies in the Middle East are joining the fossil-fuelled BRICS alliance spanning the globe, and the Wagner group is loosening Europe's grip of Africa. The tectonic plates of geopolitics are shifting along new fault lines as rising powers focus on securing resources while the old Empire in the West pretends it can decouple economies and energy. The world is at war, but only one side is being honest about what for. Acclaimed energy expert Art Berman says this is the culmination of millennia of human fallibility. This is a conversation that takes us from 3000 BCE and the discovery of what he calls the most disruptive technology humans ever had right up to today and the energy wars blooming around the world. We discuss our psychological disposition to immaturity, our cognitive shortcomings when examining complexity, the secrets of holy texts and even morality. Art explains how energy is reshaping geopolitical alliances, which leaders understand the reality of our situation, and why technology cannot solve our problems. On this episode, Art Berman returns to give a broad update on the state of global oil - from BRICS+ and shale oil to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and oil investment. As Art says, ‘oil is the economy' and understanding the complex dynamics of the oil market provides insight into the entire economic system. How do geological luck and foreign policy create the global stage for oil markets? What is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, have we been misusing it, and does it matter in comparison to larger energy policy blunders? What are the current dynamics affecting oil prices and how will this affect the long term out-look of oil availability? Please note: this episode was recorded prior to the Israel/Palestine events of last weekend. About Arthur Berman Arthur E. ITOP Episode 408 - Art Berman - Labyrinth Consulting 10 - 1-23 by SHALE Magazine
If you're watching this, whether you're a fan of fossil fuels or not, there's no denying that modern society is still immensely dependent on them -- particularly oil. Look around you -- practically everything you see required oil somewhere along the process of being mined, manufactured or transported to get to where you are. Even the food you ate today. Oil is still the lifeblood of the global economy. Yet after hitting $120/barrel a year ago, its price has since dropped nearly in half. For an update on what lies ahead with this essential fuel, as well as the global energy markets in general, we welcome petroleum geologist & energy industry analyst Art Berman back to the program. ************************************************* At Wealthion, we show you how to protect and build your wealth by learning from the world's top experts on finance and money. Each week we add new videos that provide you with access to the foremost specialists in investing, economics, the stock market, real estate and personal finance. We offer exceptional interviews and explainer videos that dive deep into the trends driving today's markets, the economy, and your own net worth. We give you strategies for financial security, practical answers to questions like “how to grow my investments?”, and effective solutions for wealth building tailored to 'regular' investors just like you. There's no doubt that it's a very challenging time right now for the average investor. Above and beyond the recent economic impacts of COVID, the new era of record low interest rates, runaway US debt and US deficits, and trillions of dollars in monetary and fiscal stimulus stimulus has changed the rules of investing by dangerously distorting the Dow index, the S&P 500, and nearly all other asset prices. Can prices keep rising, or is there a painful reckoning ahead? Let us help you prepare your portfolio just in case the future brings one or more of the following: inflation, deflation, a bull market, a bear market, a market correction, a stock market crash, a real estate bubble, a real estate crash, an economic boom, a recession, a depression, or another global financial crisis. In this must watch Frankly, Nate illustrates how a reduction in the demand for gasoline will not - as commonly believed - result in a 1:1 reduction in the demand for oil. This is contrary to a widespread perception, which much growth in the Electric Vehicle industry has been based on, about the correlation between a decline in gasoline usage resulting in an overall decline in oil production and CO2 emissions. While a significant portion of oil refining results in gasoline, we need to be aware of modern civilization's deep dependencies on the remaining products that all come from the same barrel of oil. Only then can we understand and plan for feasible pathways to reducing oil production and consumption within the confines of a growth-dependent complex adaptive system. How can movements such as Just Stop Oil better reflect the reality of the current oil production system and our economy? Stay tuned next week when Nate shares 7 potential paths to a less oil-dependent future. A special thank you to Joris van der Schot, John Rowan, Robert Rapier, and Art Berman for helpful input on this video. On this inaugural episode of Reality Roundtable, Nate is joined by Art Berman, Simon Michaux, and Pedro Prieto to discuss the viability of scaling electric vehicles and what role they could play in the future. Electric vehicles have become increasingly more popular in recent years, and in tandem more polarizing and controversial. Art, Simon, Pedro, and Nate join together for a multi-faceted conversation jam packed with expertise and insight about the reality of EVs. Are plans for dramatically increasing the production of electric vehicles as a replacement for internal combustion vehicles materially, economically, or even infrastructurally possible? Are current EV initiatives taking a science-based systems approach towards this massive economic, environmental, and cultural shift or are they rooted in energy blindness? About Arthur Berman: Arthur E. Berman is a petroleum geologist with 36 years of oil and gas industry experience. He is an expert on U.S. shale plays and is currently consulting for several E&P companies and capital groups in the energy sector. About Pedro Prieto: Pedro is the vice president of the Asociación para el Estudio de los Recursos Energéticos (AEREN). AEREN is an open space for debate and communications on energy issues and their role in demography, development, economy and ecology. Pedro was a member of the board at ASPO International with AEREN representing ASPO in Spain. Since 2004, Pedro has led several solar photovoltaic projects in Spain, a leading world country in solar PV penetration. Pedro co-authored Spain's Photovoltaic Revolution. The Energy Return on Investment, that challenged the conventional energy boundaries considered up to the moment for calculations. About Simon Michaux: Dr. Simon Michaux is an Associate Professor of Geometallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland. He has a PhD in mining engineering. Description This week, Nate walks through the path we are currently on en route to the Great Simplification - a path towards a “Mordor Economy”. Based on data from colleagues Art Berman and Carey King, Nate untangles the complex relationship between biology, GDP, and net energy. How is an economic metabolism based on a need for growth creating a pathway for increasing amounts of energy to be directed to the energy sector itself? Why hasn't the rapid growth of renewables satiated our energy appetite? How is the use of credit masking the full energetic-cost of energy? Can we proactively take the necessary steps to reset the balance between energy efficiency and energy consumption to pass through Mordor unscathed and arrive at the Great Simplification? According to today's guest, energy expert and petroleum geologist Art Berman, the world is now experiencing an oil shock -- the magnitude of which we've rarely seen before. Oil prices had risen tremendously over the past two years off of their 2020, but the recent outbreak of war in Ukraine has propelled them into a higher orbit. The trade embargoes currently under consideration against Russia in response to the invasion sent oil futures briefly up to $139/barrel last night. That's nearly twice the price oil traded at the start of the year, just two months ago. And it's not just oil. The price for natural gas in Europe has increased 5-fold since 2020. How much worse is the situation likely to get? And what economic repercussions will these runaway energy prices cause? See the YouTube Video for the charts and graphics: https://youtu.be/kTEMGCixF5c
We've all seen energy prices skyrocket over the past year -- for the oil and natural gas that heat our homes, the electricity we use, and the gasoline we put in our cars. And certain parts of the world have been concerned about simply getting "enough" energy -- at whatever the price -- to see them through the winter. Why did energy suddenly become so in demand, and how did it get so expensive so quickly? How soon until they come down again? WILL they come down again?? For the answers, we turn to energy expert and petroleum geologist Art Berman. See the YouTube Video for the charts and graphics: https://youtu.be/vyxddYfXaQk

Energy is suddenly headline news. Oil, which traded at negative prices for a brief moment last year due to the global economic slowdown caused by the pandemic, is now expected by a number of analysts to hit $100/barrel soon. Europe is worried about not having enough natural gas to heat its homes this winter. A petrol shortage in the UK is making it a challenge for folks to fill their cars. And prices at the pump are back near record highs in the US. And China and India are so short on coal that major metropolitan power plants are resorting to rolling blackouts to conserve fuel. Why are so many regions of the world suddenly experiencing these energy crises? Petroleum geologist and energy analyst Art Berman has a lot of the answers we're looking for, and I'm so pleased he was able to join us today on such short notice. Art Berman is a petroleum geologist and one of America's top energy analysts. In this episode, Art talks about why supply drives oil prices, why no country or company can be “energy dominant,” how physics explains our dependence on oil, the U.S. as a superpower in refined oil products, Iran as the “ascendant power” in the Middle East, and how LNG exports are contributing to the surge in domestic natural gas prices.
MacroVoices Erik Townsend and Patrick Ceresna welcome Art Berman to the show. Art nailed the call for $65 crude oil when we had him on in early January, but now he says the big move higher in price is probably mostly over, and he doesn’t see any reason to expect crude oil prices to rally much higher than $70. And that’s despite the fact that Art still predicts a significant decline in U.S. production later this year. They discuss this and so much more. Link: https://bit.ly/3vfRvUm

For our 100th episode, we invited Art Berman back to refresh our views with his outlook on oil and natural gas prices. Things have changed a lot since the vaccine news in November and prices have moved from a low of $1.74 and $35 to where we sit today at $2.50 and $52. Art is a fundamentalist who looks at comparative inventory to take a view. He walks us through his thinking and I’ll leave it to you to make the bet: Up, down or sideways from here?
