The Crow | Brandon Lee | Ernie Hudson | Michael Wincott | Alex Proyas | [1994] The Crow is a 1994 American supernatural dark fantasy directed by Alex Proyas and written by David J. Schow and John Shirley. It stars Brandon Lee in his final film appearance as Eric Draven, a murdered musician who is resurrected to avenge the deaths of himself and his fiancee. The film is based on James O'Barr's comic of the same name. Michael Wincott, Michael Massee, Ernie Hudson, James O'Barr, Tony Todd, Laurence Mason, Bai Ling, Anna Thompson, Rochelle Davis and Sodia Shinas were the supporting cast for The Crow. Production on The Crow was struck by tragedy when Lee was fatally wounded during filming. As Lee had finished most of his scenes before his death, the film was completed through script rewrites, a stunt double, and digital effects. The Crow is dedicated to Brandon Lee and his fiancee, Eliza Hutton. After Brandon Lee's death caused Paramount Pictures to opt-out of distributing the film, the rights were picked up by Miramax, who oversaw The Crow's completion. The Crow was released to positive reviews, with the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus praising its tone, visuals, and Brandon Lee's performance. The Crow's success led to a media franchise that includes three sequels and a television series. The sequels, which featured different protagonists and none of the original cast members, would be unable to match the success of the first film, however. The Crow was a sleeper hit at the box office, it opened at number one in the United States in 1,573 theaters with $11,774,332 and averaging $7,485 per theater. Some industry sources believed that Miramax overstated the weekend gross by as much as $1 million. The Crow ultimately grossed $50,693,129 in the United States and Canada, and $43 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $93.7 million against its budget of $23 million. It ranked at number 24 for all films released in the US in 1994, the 24th highest-grossing film worldwide for 1994, and number 10 for R-rated films released that year. Overseas in Europe, the film grossed £1,245,403 in the United Kingdom (where it was 18-rated), and sold 4,604,115 tickets in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. In South Korea, it sold 83,126 tickets in Seoul City. #TheCrow #BrandonLee #RIPBrandonLee #ErnieHudson #AlexProyas #DavidJSchow #JohnShirley #MichaelWincott #MichaelMassee #ErnieHudson #JamesOBarr #TonyTodd #LaurenceMason #BaiLing #AnnaThompson #RochelleDavis #SodiaShinas #TheCrow1994 #ParamountPictures #Miramax #CultClassic #MovieByte #MovieBytePodcast ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moviebytepod... Kwame Anthony Appiah is among the most respected philosophers and thinkers of his generation. In Kwame Anthony Appiah (Routledge, 2021), Christopher Lee introduces the reader not only to the contributions that Appiah has made to some central debates of our time, but also to the complex personal and intellectual history that shaped his ideas. Born in Ghana to an African father and a British mother, Appiah has spent his life straddling multiple worlds. He was educated as a philosopher at Cambridge University and later moved to the United States where he has occupied several prestigious academic positions. As Lee explains, Appiah's major contribution has been to critically question the ideologies and identities that may enable or prevent individuals to operate in a world where one is constantly moving across geographic and cultural boundaries. What is identity? What are the historical and ideological underpinnings of concepts such as race and culture? How do they affect our decisions about how to live in the world? What do we owe people who are not like us? In addition to being a clear and concise guide through Appiah's ideas, Lee offers a rich and nuanced intellectual biography, locating Appiah in the broader history of African thinkers, moral philosophy and liberalism. What was to be a healing recovery initially, it turned out to be as she put it, “a bomb”. A total stranger became her best friend despite her struggling with challenges and depression. Healing came, but on both sides. As Lee-ann puts it, “Throughout  our friendship, there was a constant ‘push and pull’. Your story is incredibly important.  No matter where you’re from in life, you’ve overcome far more than you may even remember to get to where you are today. As Lee discusses in today’s show, the sum total of your life experiences may be the key to building successful relationships, and to overcoming the hurdles of the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recognising that you are already the veteran of many challenges in life, can help people buy into your story. We build relationships by connecting our stories to those around us. It is the bringing together of shared or aspirational experiences. By focusing on the moments of elation in our livers, we can take from them the lessons that matter most to us. For change agents or leaders working in business, one of the greatest challenges can be in how to differentiate yourself. How do we make ourselves stand out? As Lee discusses in this week’s show, the best way of standing out can be in the way we communicate, and by maximising the significance of each interaction, through using a simple formula. KEY TAKEAWAYS Impact means many things, but most importantly, it represents the outcome we aspire to receiving after any communication. Lee’s formula for maximising impact through communication is: Intent - why are you communicating in the first place? Memorable - how can you make sure you stand out among the other communications? Passion - are we communicating emotion in the message? Actionable - have we included a call to action with a timeframe involved? Clarity - can you communication be understood by everyone? Targeted - is your message directed to the relevant person or team? BEST MOMENTS ‘If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll make the impact you always have’ ‘What do you want somebody to know, to feel, and to do?’ ‘Clarity reduces the chance of misinterpretation' VALUABLE RESOURCES Business Problems Solved Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST For the last 15 years, I have been a multi-sector internal or external business improvement consultant, building the improved capability of individuals, teams and businesses. This week on the Follower Of One Podcast, Mike speaks with Lee Whitehead. Lee has caught the entrepreneur bug and started his consulting firm called UVOICE Consulting, Inc., focusing on marketing, sales enabling, and technology audits. He has been working with Follower Of One in several capacities including, editing and producing our podcast. Lee was born and raised in the Dallas, Texas area and his work with us began with a chance encounter between him and Mike at a local Panera Bread, of all places.   Episode Breakdown: 00:52 - Meet Lee Whitehead from UVOICE Consulting, Inc. 05:15 - Early Faith 07:40 - A Twist of Fate Leads to Love 13:35 - Two Types of People 21:32 - Lee Hits Mike with the Hard Questions   Early Faith   Lee grew up in Texas going to a Baptist church every Sunday alongside his parents and was originally baptized at the age of nine or ten. That young Lee had an epiphany while under the water that has stuck with him to this day. Having always been afraid to open his eyes underwater, young Lee opened them for the first time while being dunked under during his baptism and realized that he could do it. That day he got a little taste of God removing his fears. Growing up on a golf course, Lee excelled at playing the sport but a twist of fate at a skateboard park would later lead him to the love of his life.   The Struggle Has Been Constant   In college, Lee began to question his faith, as is common for people who are out on their own for the very first time in their lives. The struggle has been constant as studying and then work, began to take up his time and his faith moved to the back burner. It wasn't until Lee had that "chance"encounter with Mike and began working for Follower of One that faith even began to come back into his life. And, Follower Of One became the only faith-based thing in his life, for that matter.   Two Types of People   Lee says he can only speak his truth and from what he has observed, there are two types of people in the church. Take a listen to the podcast to hear about those two types and why Lee only really enjoys working with one of them. In working with Follower Of One, Lee listens to the podcasts, over and over, as he is editing and has found things that make him think deeper about his faith. One, in particular, Roger Courville's interview, really made him think. If you missed that episode, be sure to check it out.   Hard Questions   As Lee still searches for his faith he has many questions and in the second half of the interview, he hits Mike with some big questions. Is it possible to develop your interest in reading the Bible, in working on your faith, in your relationship with Jesus? Who is responsible for your success, you, or God? Where is our passion supposed to lye, with our work or with God? And, do you believe Jesus has all the answers? Creating a New Healthcare

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2020 52:20

Dear Friends & Colleagues,On Friday March 27th 2020, I launched a limited podcast series addressing how the COVID-19 pandemic is reframing American healthcare.  You can find the introductory episode here.  In this series, I am interviewing future-facing and courageous healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs - asking two questions: (1) How is the COVID-19 pandemic immediately changing the way you are delivering healthcare? (2) How will COVID-19 reframe American healthcare for years to come? The episode this week outlines an approach to designing the healthcare consumer experience that, in my opinion, will become a required standard of care.  Our guest is Lee Becker who currently serves as Solutions Principal at Medallia Inc.  Medallia is a pioneering and leading consumer experience management company.  Prior to joining Medallia, Lee served as the Chief of Staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs ‘Customer Experience Office’ and was responsible for transforming the patient experience there.  Lee is a Navy Veteran and former Chief Hospital Corpsman who served in operational capacities and expeditionary platforms providing care to Marines during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This is an incredibly instructive and inspiring dialogue in which we discuss:The “whole person” human-centered reframe the VA introduced in its healthcare consumer experience - and how relevant that is to today’s situation, and moving forward during the post-COVID-19 era.The 3 critical components Lee Becker and his colleagues utilized to deploy this holistic reframe of the healthcare consumer experience. The emerging AI-enabled, ‘signal-capture’ technology that transforms how patients can navigate through the healthcare system - again, so on point to the challenges we are currently facing and will continue to encounter in the post-COVID-19 era.Lee brings a unique set of experiences and expertise to bear.  But, even more than his expertise, wisdom and accomplishments, what impresses me most about Lee Becker is his integrity, his palpable sense of purpose and service, and his down-to-earth practicality.  The approaches he (and Medallia) are deploying are so simple and common sensical; but they are not commonplace.  If we had followed the empathetic, humanistic playbook that Lee Becker outlines, our healthcare system would have been much better prepared for the pandemic, and for the recovery in the post-COVID-19 healthcare era.  These ‘whole-person’ human-centered lessons are particularly salient to our present moment in healthcare history, in which the critical importance of emotional, relational and social health are being demonstrated in spades.   As Lee points out, if we are going to fully recover from this pandemic, it will require that we take the time to learn these lessons and make the appropriate shifts - particularly the shift from thinking about healthcare consumers only as 'clinical' patients - to understanding, engaging and treating them as 'whole' people.  The take home point for me is that we must move beyond words and intentions to actually reframing healthcare, or we will find ourselves repeating history over and over again.  As Lee points out, we must, with methodological rigor - redirect our tactics and resources - and deploy the policies, processes, tools & technologies that can make healthcare more engaging, enabling & empathetic for every member of our society.  Until next time, be safe and be well.Zeev Neuwirth, MD

The FAITH Food Pantry is a shining example of what Newtown is all about. Here’s what I mean.Selling your home? Get a home value report here Looking to buy a home? Search all local homes for sale here I recently had the pleasure of visiting the FAITH Food Pantry here in Newtown, and I was lucky enough to be joined by President Lee Paulsen and Vice President Jill LeBlanc to talk a little bit about their history and what they bring to the Newtown community. The FAITH Food Pantry was started in 1983 by the Reverend Joan Horrowit at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook. They’ve been in the current location for about a year and a half, and they serve around 150 families per month. Winter months are harder because a lot of their clients pay for expenses (heat, electricity, etc.) they wouldn’t ordinarily pay for in the summer. As Lee and Jill said, so many people are no more than one paycheck away from having a need, and the hardest thing for them to do is walk through their front door and ask for help. They always leave with a smile, though. During my tour, the word “goodness” came to mind. Everyone in there is there to help, and you get the feeling that if you were in need, this would be a safe place to come. All the volunteers are Newtown residents, and anyone is welcome to come inside as long as they’re, also, Newtown residents. They specify this because all the money and food that’s provided is done so by the city of Newtown.  Everyone in there is there to help, and you get the feeling that if you were in need, this would be a safe place to come.As you might expect, they get an influx of food donations for the holidays, and they’ll have free turkeys and Thanksgiving meals to provide this year. The summer months are when they have their lowest level of inventory, so during that time, they’re always on the lookout for basic items like cleaning supplies, coffee, etc. If you’d like to contribute to their cause, they accept donations on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. I think what FAITH Food Pantry does is a great summation of what Newton is all about. There’s a special kindness that’s exuded in this town, and they’re an example of that. It’s worth noting that they refer to the people they help as “clients” instead of “the needy.”I want to thank Lee and Jill for joining me for today’s video, and my team and I look forward to hopefully hosting one of their food drives within the month. If you’d like to know more about FAITH Food Pantry, visit their website here. As always, if you have any real estate questions for me or there’s anything I can help you with, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to speak with you.

Kunwoo Lee, Ph.D., CEO, and co-founder of GenEdit delivers an interesting overview of his company's groundbreaking work in gene editing.   GenEdit is a future-forward company that has a primary focus on genome editing, developing advanced technologies for CRISPR/Cas9 based therapeutics. Their proprietary technology supports the delivery of unique gene editors to an array of tissues utilizing nanoparticles that are non-viral and also polymer-based delivery vehicles.   Lee talks about the origin of his company. He provides some background information about DNA sequences and discusses in detail how DNA is assigned at birth, and he explains that although there are some mutations, it has generally been very difficult to change the DNA that we are born with. As Lee states, in the past, if one was born with a genetic disease there was not much that could be done to alter that on the DNA level, but now, with new advancing technologies, there are many more options.    Genetic diseases exist in many organs such as the brain, liver, muscle, and blood. As Lee outlines, their GenEdit platform can screen the polymer-based nanoparticle library to ascertain the optimum delivery to a target organ. Their unique nanoparticles can enclose gene therapy molecules as well as CRISPR proteins.   The gene expert talks about how their system works in detail, explaining their delivery system, delivering genes to target tissue areas. He discusses their many challenges, and some of the processes they have used to accomplish their goals. He speaks about viruses and how the human body reacts. Lee talks about how they utilize CRISPR/Cas9 to precisely impact the gene that has a genetic mutation. CRISPR/Cas9 is a breakthrough technology in the field of biotech that has now become a go-to laboratory tool for many high-end researchers globally. CRISPR is, in its simplest terms, a collective of DNA sequences that can be found in the genomes of various prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria.   Lee explains muscle regeneration and nerve regeneration, and the possibilities for both, considering the technologies his company has developed, and are continuing to advance further. He discusses the permanency of gene editing and how technology is literally changing the way we think about combatting diseases. As animal testing has shown some incredibly exciting possibilities, Lee talks about his enthusiasm regarding their road forward with the technology, and the steps they must take before human clinical trials will begin.

"Five" (also David Mazouz) —who demonstrates impressive fighting skills, an imperviousness to pain and worrying signs of impersonation. After he tracks her down, following the dead bodies and burning properties, Alice tells tells Gordon she wants nothing to do with her brother. Dr. Pascal Lee is not the first Renaissance man to be interview on STEM-Talk, but his impressive biography merits that moniker. “An artist, helicopter pilot, polar researcher, planetary scientist, and a pioneer in thinking about possible human futures in space,” as described by IHMC Director Ken Ford, Lee has an impressive list of accomplishments to his name. He is co-founder and chairman of the Mars Institute, director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project at NASA Ames Research Center, and senior planetary scientist at the SETI Institute. Born in Hong Kong, he was sent to boarding school in Paris as a child, and later graduated from the University of Paris with a degree in geology and geophysics. During his year of civil service after college, he lived with 31 other men in Antarctica—a formative experience that gave him a thirst for field work and hands-on exploration. As Lee himself says in this interview, “Forever in my life there will be before and after Antarctica.” Lee went on to study astronomy and space science at Cornell University, where he was also Carl Sagan’s teacher’s assistant. He then did a post-doc at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, where he has been ever since. He continues to search for “new life” in the universe, with a particular interest in preparing for future exploration of Mars. This summer marks Lee’s twentieth summer field trip on Devon Island, the largest uninhabited earth with geological evidence similar to what Lee suspects would be found on Mars. Lee is also the author of a children’s book, called Mission: Mars, about what it would take for humans to travel to the planet. He is also currently working on a book for adults addressing similar questions. Several of Lee’s lectures are available on YouTube, or at his page on the SETI website: http://www.seti.org/users/pascal-lee. His personal web site is http://www.pascallee.net. In this episode, STEM-Talk Host Dawn Kernagis and IHMC senior research scientist Tom Jones, also a veteran NASA astronaut, interview Lee. 00:49: Ken Ford describes Lee’s accomplishments, adding, “Pascal and I share a passion for the moons of Mars—especially Phobos.” 2:10: Ford reads a 5-star iTunes review from “podcast file”: “The STEM-Talk podcast is a must listen. I appreciate how the format of a podcast stays focused and on topic. It is packed with outstanding content that lives up to its name. I truly found useful information and perspectives that impacts how I understand and see the world.” 3:57: Lee describes his upbringing in a Hong Kong that was booming. His father was ethnically Chinese, and his mother was French. As a child, he was sent to boarding school in France—without yet knowing how to speak French. “I started a new life at age eight. I stayed there for fifteen years.” 5:10: He always loved space travel. “I thought that was really inspiring and exciting. It wasn’t just the travel itself. [It was also the fact that there was] more to the universe than what we had on earth. Mars came into the picture a little later, as a teenager. That’s when I got serious about becoming a scientist.” 6:05: Carl Sagan’s book Cosmic Connection “really changed my life at the time…. From that day on, I decided that the planetary sciences were what I wanted to do. The rest was easy because once you have a goal and a focus, it makes a lot of decisions for you.” 6:38: Lee studied science and physics at the University of Paris. He spent his obligatory year of national service in Antarctica. 7:30: “On my way South [to Antarctica], I posted a letter to one graduate school—where Carl Sagan taught. In the middle of winter, I get this Telex from Cornell that I’d gotten in.” 8:28: Lee says his 402 days at a station in Antarctica “was an other-worldly experience. We were 31 people. All men. Forever in my life there will be before and after Antarctica.” 9:48: He went on his first helicopter ride off the coast of Antarctic...

Anyone who is part of a company of a certain size will understand the difficulties of the recruitment process. It simply isn’t automatic that a new recruit is going to fit in, and one key reason is because of the vast range of ages and generations that work under one roof. It’s perfectly common for a new employee to be working under somebody who is the same age as their parents, and while it is generally accepted that children and parents will see the world in a different way, employers often fall into the trap of expecting all generations to behave the same way in the workplace. It was certainly a very interesting chat. See below for a sneak preview of some of the great advice Lee shared with us on how best to manage younger employees: As well as giving his incredible first-hand account of what happened on flight 1549 that day, Dave was kind enough to share with us some of the lessons he learnt from the incident that he has been applying to business and to life ever since: ** Outline company rules from the very beginning, ideally at the interview stage, i.e. working hours, social media policy etc. ** Again, from the earliest possible stage, clearly outline the prospects of career progression. ** In many cases, there is no such thing as ‘normal’. What one generation assumes as ‘normal’ could easily not be reflected by another generation. ** Accept that people are going to leave, sometimes after a relatively short time. Remember that there is a high value in having your employers leave on good terms. The key thing to remember is that younger workers have grown up in an era where information is more readily available than it was to certain older generations. Therefore they expect a lot of feedback, and a lot of clarity on company policy. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** What ‘the millennial generation’ actually means ** How technology has shaped the perceptions of the millennial generation ** How the concept of ‘end of day’ is being challenged ** A reasonable expectation of staff loyalty and length of service today   Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Sponsor the show: ben@maxmyprofit.com.au, put in subject line “interested in sponsoring BBF” ** Free, no-obligation business coaching chat with a member of Ben’s team: (http://actioncoachanz.com/free-business-coaching-session) ** Ben’s Daily Business Tips podcast (http://www.dbtpodcast.com) ** Facebook (www.facebook.com/businessbrainfood) ** Business Brain Food Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood) ** Twitter (https://twitter.com/bfewtrell) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher)   As Lee saliently pointed out, if your company doesn’t cater for younger employees then it doesn’t have much of a future… you simply cannot afford to dismiss the challenges that younger employees bring. Learn about how best to work with them, and take action! Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! An acclaimed communication strategist known for her practical solutions to big problems - Lee founded her company, Double Forte in 2002 to work with good people doing great work. Her clients span well-loved brands and hot technology startups in the San Francisco Bay area, Boston, New York, and Europe. As an author, Lee wrote Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work, after struggling and then figuring out how to work well with millennial clients and staffers (more than half of Lee's staff is under 32). This positive and practical book is based on her own experience and interviews with hundreds of professionals of all ages across the country. As Lee points out: "I was fed up with the negative stereotypes millennials are burdened with, and was determined to figure out how to create a culture where Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials can all thrive together." On this episode of Gen X Amplified, we really get a chance to go deep into a generational conversation, and discuss the various dynamics of Millennials, Gen Xers, and Boomers in the marketplace. This is definitely a "must-listen" for any Gen Xer looking to become a better leader in the marketplace. Key Highlights From This Episode: What were the two transformational moments that spearheaded Lee's path to launching her agency? How did Lee get the idea for her book , and write it in only three months? What are the best ways to create positive inter-generational work cultures? “Isn’t it funny?” once mused Buck O’Neil, the sage of Negro League baseball. “Everybody remembers going to their first baseball game with their father. They might not remember going to their first day of school, . . . or their first Thanksgiving dinner. But they always remember going to the baseball game with their father.” O’Neil’s observation applies to me (the game was between the Twins and Angels, at Met Stadium in 1977), as it does to Lee Congdon (a game at Wrigley Field in 1948). The starting point of Lee’s book is this understanding of the important place that baseball holds in the memories of its fans. Baseball and Memory: Winning, Losing, and the Remembrance of Things Past (St. Augustine’s Press, 2011) is filled with recollections of wins and losses, of moments comic and tragic, from all eras of baseball history. As Lee explains, these remembered visits to the ballpark or great plays seen on television point to larger questions of the ways that memory shapes us and the ways that we understand larger periods of history. As a scholar of European intellectual history, Congdon takes a somewhat different approach to baseball, and names like Ricoeur, Kundera, and even Nietzsche figure into our conversation. Certainly, this is a baseball book, and Lee revisits many of the well-known and lesser-known moments and characters of baseball history. But it also a more philosophical, personal reflection on how Americans view the nation’s pastime and the nation’s past. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
