Welcome to Episode #11 of the 4ever in Electric Dreams & CONFESSIONS OF A CURLY MIND co-production - Supple & Lean | A Geekcast. Presented by Imran Mirza from London, UK, and Vahé Vishapakagh Koshayan from Melbourne, Australia, for this episode the duo delve into all things related to 'The Crow'. With origins from James O'Barr's 1989 comic book series 'The Crow', the impassioned piece of work spawned its first on-screen iteration with the Alex Proyas-helmed movie in 1994. Starring the dearly departed Brandon Lee in a career-defining performance, the film went on to achieve cult status and has been revered since its release now 31 years ago. Following the 1994 original, subsequent entries within the franchise were marked by 'The Crow: City of Angels' (1996), 'The Crow: Salvation' (2000) and 'The Crow: Wicked Prayer' (2005) with neither generating favourable reviews or the money required to really justify the iteration that would follow. 'The Crow: Stairway to Heaven' - the 1998 TV series - perhaps generated the most favourable reviews but didn't get the chance to continue their story with the planned second season which never came to fruition; yet more Crows followed with a mix of the stories recounting the forlorn tragedy of the ill-fated lovers Eric Draven and Shelly Webster amongst others who were wronged by the harsh cruelty of an unjust life. The 30 year milestone has been marked by the release of the latest iteration of the vengeful vigilante, this time with Rupert Sanders in the director's chair leading a cast of Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and Danny Huston. With Vahé and Imran both long-time fans of the 1994 original, the time seemed right to have a lengthy chat about their affections for Proyas' masterpiece, delve into the comics for the first time and revisit the sequels and reboots in an incredibly expansive conversation into James O'Barr's incredible world. The show today features original music from Supple & Lean featuring Shelly Draven with 'Your Dark Path'. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Emanating from London, UK, the 4ever in Electric Dreams website and podcast network is designed to help us celebrate the things we loved growing up and the things that continue to excite and inspire us today. The late, great Eric Draven used to say that it can't rain all the time. Manchester United supporters may disagree. It's been another bad start to what might be another bad season, but Carl Anka isn't so sure. He's here with lots of reasons to be at least sort of optimistic about the future. Can Everton be optimistic about anything? They're the real crisis club in England. We've borrowed Matt Slater from The Athletic FC podcast to assess the situation. Got something to say? Ben & Rob point and laugh at ‘The Crow', Hollywood's latest insult to its own history as it constantly ruins everything good in this world. It may star Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs as Eric Draven and Shelly but the similarities end there - classic villain Top Dollar is gone, and now Eric fights demons with soundcloud raps. It's also been a critical and commercial disaster, with critics yawning and the audience not even showing up.But what on earth possessed them to ‘fox' something that was never broken? Is there anything to redeem this latest Hollywood cas-grab? In the original movie “The Crow” in 1994, there's a prominent refrain of “It can't rain all the time.” of course meaning sometimes it rains and sometimes there's sun. Is this new retelling of “The Crow” in 2024 going to bring us rain or sun? Is it going to disappoint or will it entertain? You'll have to watch this episode to find out. The new “The Crow” stars Bill Skarsgard (It, Barbarian, John Wick 4) as Eric Draven and FKA twigs as his true love, Shelly. The movie is kicked off by a friend of Shelly's letting her know that there is something she has that incriminates the big, bad guy in this, played by Danny Huston. As you'd expect, the bad guys know about this and kick off the chase element of this movie. Shelly, in the meantime, is sent to a massive drug rehab center/prison where she meets, and strikes up a relationship with Eric. In one way this turns out to be a bad turn of fate for Eric because he and Shelly are murdered because she knows about that incriminating evidence. Eric, however, isn't sent to the afterlife, he is offered a chance to go back to the land of the living and put right what was made wrong. In other words, find the scumbags that killed him and Shelly and exact terrible revenge on them. This way he and Shelly can find peace. Also, he has a crow to play criminal Google Maps for him to help Eric find the right baddies. This “The Crow” remake also stars Josette Simon, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, Karel Dobry, Jordan Bolger, Sebastian Orozco, David Bowles, Trigga, Samba Goldin, Isabella Wei, Jordan Haj and Dukagjin Podrimaj. In this episode of Geek Girl Soup, we're taking flight with "The Crow"! Join Susan, Kelly, and Cort as we swoop into a deep discussion about the original 1994 cult classic and the much-anticipated 2024 reboot.
Alex Proyas' 1994 The Crow is a genuinely great film, released at a time when “comic book movies” weren't an all-encompassing pop culture phenomenon, and one that plays very much like a unique action-horror film (rather than a superhero one). We can't recommend it, or its unbelievably badass soundtrack album, enough. The Crow has a little of everything: it's a horror movie, it's a love story, it's a twisted superhero origin story and revenge tale, and it's a unique time capsule of a particular moment in pop culture history. But all of those things have been discussed to death elsewhere, right? Are we breaking down the unique ways that Eric Draven kills the men who wronged him during his life? Nope. Are we delving into the philosophies surrounding the prospects of life after death? Not this episode! Are we walking about how cool it would be to make friends with a crow? Abso-freakin'-lutely!An under-discussed part of The Crow is the role that an actual, physical crow seems to play in Eric's journey of post-life revenge. The bird is somewhat magical, but not a complete manifestation of the supernatural. In fact, it functions very much like the concept of a “familiar” often found in fantasy literature. So that's the topic we're taking a birds-eye look at this time around. And believe it or not, there's a LOT to unpack. Seriously, you have no idea how smart crows are, or just how feasible some aspects of the magical familiar might have roots in real science. Want to find out more? Watch it right here or on our YouTube page.SUGGESTED VIEWING Unfortunately, you can't divorce The Crow from the real life tragedy that surrounds it, notably the untimely accidental death of star Brandon Lee during filming. Shudder's Cursed Films season 1 episode 4 deals with this, and it's worth a watch if you want more background on this infamous moment in cinema history. There are a bunch of mediocre sequels to the original film (and even a TV series!), but we don't recommend them. Anyway, the only piece of The Crow franchise that we considered for this episode was that original, classic 1994 movie. However, if you want to get a sense of just how great a talent Brandon Lee was, and how this movie SHOULD have kickstarted a new phase of his career that would have brought him a level of mainstream stardom, allow us to recommend 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo (co-starring the great Dolph Lundgren!) and 1992's Rapid Fire. Neither are exactly masterpieces, but they sure do kick some ass and Brandon is a natural. For some…less friendly…birds, you absolutely should watch Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds if you haven't already. You'll be perfectly happy not having any of them as your familiars. And of course, there's a new reboot of The Crow in theaters now. There's some crossover with our further readings below, but this New York Times video that asks (and kind of answers) the question of “how smart are crows” is quite a watch!Oh, and the movie that freaked Hakeem out as a kid? That's a 1975 weird one starring none other than William Shatner in one of his...less memorable...rolls, called The Devil's Rain.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! But before we get into the scientific and mythological readings to go with this episode, allow us to suggest that you give James O'Barr's original comic series that launched this franchise a read. It's harrowing, beautiful, violent stuff, and just different enough from the movie that you won't feel like you know everything that's gonna happen! OK, now back to your regularly scheduled science-y stuff.FamiliarsIt will come as no surprise to anyone that there isn't a ton of serious scientific writing on the subject of familiars. But the more “new age” corners of the internet have done their homework, and the above article is a compelling read.Crows in MythologyCrows and ravens are recurring symbols in a number of religious and mythological traditions. 30 years ago a small indie film based on a graphic novel became a huge hit thanks in large part to Brandon Lee's epic take on the "back from the dead" hero, Eric Draven. First time film director Alex Proyas delivers a rock and roll action film with such grit. Not only does this movie hold up but it will be hard for the remake to live up to its predecessor.

Back in the early days of the comic book movies, it was rare to see one released to theaters which was not only financially successful but also generally beloved by fans. There were the Batman films....and then everything else including The Rocketeer, The Shadow, and Dick Tracy. But just under thirty years, one came out which not only proved to be both financially successful and hugely influential for so many other subgenre films which were to follow up but also was being released under unusually tragic circumstances. This was the final on-screen appearance of Brandon Lee who unfortunately died during production as the result of an on-set accident involving the use of a prop gun. It was a shocking turn of events for some one who seemed to have enormous promise as a potential movie star and who also happened to be the son of a legendary movie star (Bruce Lee) who also died under mysterious circumstances almost three decades prior. :( Under the sure hand of director Alex Proyas, this supernatural revenge thriller turned out better than any one could have expected. It tells the story of Eric Draven, the front man for a local goth rock band in Detroit who is brutally murdered alongside his fiance....but then is brought back temporarily to bring justice to those who wronged him and his lost love. Also co-starring Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, and Bai Ling, it's time to revisit one of the more beloved comic book adaptations of the '90's...or any decade for that matter. KRRAAAH!
This week on The Last Row Podcast, let's traverse the rooftops of 1994 seeking a post-credits shower after viewing the greasy revenge flick, The Crow. Drew and Badway break down the grime that littered the set behind and in front of the camera, including crew drug use, Brandon Lee's accidental death, filthy alleyways, dank apartments, and slimy pawn shops. Additionally, the guys speculate on the sound of Eric Draven's fake band, Hangman's Joke, and put the underrated Final Boss, Top Dollar, through the villain scale. -- Episode Links: Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) Moleskin Shirt (The Golden Closet) Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) Signature 3 Piece Suit (The Golden Closet) Brandon Lee's Death (Wikipedia) The Death of Brandon Lee (Aural Crave) The Crow Movie: The Deleted Skull Cowboy Explained (ScreenRant) Subscribe & Follow Us: Spotify Apple Podcasts YouTube Google Podcasts Twitter Facebook Instagram
Kyle is incensed after his first viewing of the long-awaited The Crow remake trailer, starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven. The original is not only one of Kyle's all-time favorite films and comfort movies, he believes 1994's The Crow possesses a high level of cultural significance. Can any iteration or remake of this classic justify attempts to infringe on Brandon Lee's tragic legacy, a film that led to his on-set death? Even though the Movie Wars crew aren't typically "trailer reaction" guys, Kyle thoroughly discusses Hollywood's latest attempt at retreading beloved IP. Head to our socials and drop your thoughts!
Your favorite undead talk show hosts are back from the afterlife; the crow carried their spirits back due to misconduct... Oof. Few vigilantes are as cool, calm, and collected as Eric Draven, resurrected by a mystical entity in Alex Proyas's 1994 cult classic, The Crow, to enact revenge on the gangsters who murdered him and his fiancée. Ahead of the 2024 reimagining, Barnabas and Samael break down the '90s urban gothic masterpiece, star Brandon Lee's untimely death and legacy, and their expectations about the new film. Warning: Spoilers for The Crow ahead. Check out Barnabas's take on the Crow (2024) official trailer on TikTok!
"Tell them Eric Draven sends his regards"... Enjoy, folks.

When someone makes a list of the best 90s movies, this week's movie is usually on the list. I bring you my review of classic, The Crow. The Crow was Brandon Lee's final film. He sadly was accidentally killed on the set of The Crow. He was famously precluded in death by his father Bruce Lee, who also died far too early in life. We still got a masterful performance by Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, who comes back from the dead to avenge his, and his fiancée's, murder. He goes up against some slimy baddies led by the murderous and twisted Michael Wincott as Top Dollar. He gets help from a cop played by Ernie Hudson and his friend Sarah played by Rochelle Davis. The action, the drama, the tension is all accompanied by a edgy, hard-hitting lineup of tracks that enhance it all. Join me to do a deep dive on this dark classic. The Crow also stars David Patrick Kelly, Jon Polito, Bai Ling, Tony Todd, Sofia Shinas, Anna Thomson, Angel David, Laurence Mason, Michael Massee, Bill Raymond, Marco Rodriguez and Kim Sykes.
