In another Al Fresco edition, Claremont Speaks went to the corner of Indian Hill and Foothill (Claremont's Protest Grounds of Choice) during the "Indivisible Claremont/March for Our Lives" demonstration by many of Claremont's dedicated activist citizens - some are or were teachers - about solving gun violence, controlling/eliminating assault rifles, our ineffective gun laws and enforcement, and the country's politicians who seemingly sub-optimize everything around their own self-interests over those that elected them. This is an inarguably important issue. Listeners are invited and enthusiastically encouraged to join the discussion. Visitors come to Claremont for a variety of reasons, including "finding what you can't find anywhere else" - and Vom Fass, Claremont's top-rated European-style "try before you buy" grocery is a destination stop for exactly that.Kim Peeples - the proprietor/franchisor of Vom Fass in Claremont (located just west of Indian Hill, on and facing First Street) - recounts how her path from college, through several jobs and increasingly advanced positions all worked to prepare her for being a success in her own business. She then discusses the advantages of franchising, especially with Vom Fass, and how she gets to satisfy her passion for helping people experience, discover and enjoy products that she truly believes in and endorses personally. Besides being inarguably knowledgeable at an expert level for just about anything in her store, she is also a smart, clever and outgoing marketer. Case in point - KFI's Neil Saavedra, host of the weekly Fork Report show, calls on Kim regularly as one of his "go-to guests" several times a year for advice, updates on the latest in food and drink, and tap her considerable depth of knowledge on a variety of culinary topics. Anyone interested in not only the Vom Fass offerings, but a short but informative lesson on starting your own business, owes it to themselves to give this episode their full attention.Enjoy Kim's narrative in this podcast, then soon after stop in to see her and ask for a tour of the unique, "only here" collection of the foods, spirits and other products Vom Fass offers......and, of course, be sure to tell Kim how much you enjoyed her CS episode.------------------------------------------------------To learn more about Vom Fass:Website: https://vomfassclaremont.com/Email Kim Peeples: info.store1005@vomfassusa.comAddress and Phone #: vomFASS Claremont 101 N Indian Hill Blvd, C2-100, Claremont, CA 91711 (909) 399-0256

There are few businesses or buildings more inextricably linked to Claremont than Sherwood Florist, the modest stone oasis of floral beauty located at Indian Hill and Foothill Blvds. A Claremont icon for over thirty years, Sherwood Florist was founded by Juan De Lira and through his artistry, originality and passion for delivering "amazing" every day, Sherwood Florist has been been supplying the village with fresh, signature top quality flower arrangements ever since.Juan took a few moments recently to reflect on his path from college to becoming the "go-to" florist in Claremont. He describes how in his early years he discovered that the floral arts were his true calling, some of the key the challenges and work involved along the way, as well as a few of his truly satisfying triumphs and successes. He and his master apprentice/designer, Phoebe Carcamo, then provide an in-depth comparison of the real costs, risks and value received when buying flowers from one of the on-line "floral brokers" vs. the superior, face-to-face, satisfaction-guaranteed experience of ordering directly from dedicated "people pleasers" such as Juan and his staff strive to be on every transaction, beyond simply being able to see the true size and quality of the arrangement and enjoy first-hand all the subtle fragrances it has to offer.Juan includes some endearing anecdotes about the business aspects required to start and grow such a business while keeping the customer's satisfaction as the paramount objective. They both touch on the undeniable benefits of their central location, having one's business in Claremont and extoll the kindness and quality of the customers and community he has had the pleasure to serve for three decades. This is a "must-listen" episode for anyone who is considering purchasing flowers for Valentine's Day, or any time thereafter. Juan and Phoebe's wisdom and passion for their product and customers and their recounting and comparison of their on-line experience will surely persuade one to take the small, but significant step to purchase locally while ensuring the satisfaction of the extra-fortunate recipient. Note: This podcast is best enjoyed BEFORE watching the Superbowl.-------------------------------------------------------------------Visit Sherwood Florist on the southwest corner of Indian Hill and Foothill Blvds,404 W Foothill Blvd, Claremont, CA 91711Phone: (909) 625-3309Email: sherwood_florist@yahoo.comor their website at https://sherwoodflowersonline.com/about-us/And please let Juan and Phoebe know how much you liked their episode on Claremont Speaks!

I was just reading the remarkable book by "One Person One Vote" by Carol Anderson, which I highly recommend. Also a great article by The Center for Progress listed ways voters were under attack. So, I decided to review the ways that voter suppression has been applied recently. During the 2018 midterm elections, voter participation was more than 10 percentage points higher than it was in the 2014 midterm elections, demonstrating Americans’ demand for change and increased enthusiasm for exercising their civic duty to vote. nearly 120 million eligible Americans did not participate. Voter suppression against marginalized groups such as African Americans, Latinos, and more is a reoccurring problem in the United States. Some voter suppression measures actively seek to discriminate against certain groups, others result from bungling and glitches. And voter suppression occurred in battleground states including Georgia, Texas, Florida, and North Dakota. Even a few thousand votes can mean the difference between victory and defeat in competitive elections. In the 2018 midterm elections, according to Anderson's book there was Voter purges, voter ID requirements, voter confusion, intimidation and harassment, long lines and much more. The 2018 Mid terms exposed the ever expanding discrimination before and during that time. It is the duty of newly elected lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels to enact affirmative policies that expand the franchise and make voting more convenient for all eligible Americans. Voter registration problems Despite efforts in some states to streamline the voter registration process registering to vote remains a significant barrier for many Americans. Finding out where and when to register, and getting paperwork, registering to vote can be confusing and hard. Minor spelling mistakes in Georgia, disallowed 53,000 voters -70 percent of whom were black—were placed in “pending” status. Then, those with pending registration statuses were still forced to prove eligibility, including U.S. citizenship, before voting on Election Day. Michigan had voter database problems. The list goes on! In some states, online voter registration, pioneered by Oregon, makes the voter registration process more convenient and drives voter participation because it eliminates the hassle of locating where to register, securing time off work, and finding transportation. In 2018, a lack of online voter registration proved a problem for Texans. In 2016, this was sued, however, the state’s appeal to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals prevented this from happening. Arizona had problems with poor online forms. Voter purges continue, especially after a June 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision that validated Ohio’s process for purging voters from voter rolls simply for not having voted in two previous elections and failing to return a mailer. Voter registrants in Cincinnati's American neighborhoods were purged for failing to vote since 2012, compared with only 4 percent of registered voters living in the surrounding suburb of Indian Hill.15 The Supreme Court gave states a stamp of approval to manipulate voter rolls and keep eligible Americans, particularly people of color, from participating in elections. A 2018 report by the Brennan Center for Justice reported that voter purges were particularly prevalent in states with histories of discriminatory voting practices. Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) purged an estimated 1.5 million people from the state voter rolls, which disproportionately affected African Americans, whose voter registrations were removed at a rate that was 1.25 times higher than for white Americans in some counties. Strict voter ID and ballot requirements Eleven percent of all Americans lack the kind of government-issued photo ID that these laws require, while people of color, low-income Americans, and students are less likely to have qualified IDs than other Americans. looking through the history of the old lacrosse it's obvious that the cross ended at the South End of the causeway goes north and that was the start of the north side which as we've said before was a community of its own had its own factories and the electric light and the rubber mills and tobacco company there Rose Street and so on.And the two railroads. But it was self-contained in that. The interesting thing that has happened is since I've moved I've met a number of the northside LaCrosseer by each and one of them comes Oh yeah yeah I think remembered every Sunday afternoon my dad and make me go to your dad's store. We'd cut through the whole the yards coming from over on the side of the street and going to the store because he wanted the nice juicy Apple for dessert. And so I talked to them about the nature of the neighborhood nature and our site. And I have not had one word of what or anything just one of them that's just the way it was.We are our own neighborhood community and within that there was the the north the Roosevelt school I'm that editor eventually and in the middle and then the south and then Indian Hill that's what we used to call it by the river mills. What do you think that there was this thing as Northside pride because you hear people say Northside pride way more than you hear people say Southside pride because we were that neighborhood and everybody within our within our neighborhood area you know we didn't. We knew people wrong the whole north side but we were family and we do things with them for each other and stuff. And that's what the pride and that's what we shared to me by this one lady that tight knit just two days ago again. So you're quite often now but that neighborhood community and caring and family may have said this. She said she'd have to go to my dad's and she's after a while I so I could just go in the back door and get in and go back out now.Have you seen people kind of come together more in your later years and he did in the earlier years.Because like I said the Northside Pride was a thing and people are still saying that but define find that people are kind of getting along better now than perhaps they used to when it comes to the city of lacrosse. The nurse said people now know him very easily feel a part of the greater lacrosse. There wasn't that standoffish because again this whole side didn't want everything to do with her side. And we were happy with that. You'd give me a couple of names of people that were characters in the back in the day like one arm Brown crazy band type and a half. These are people who lived in this Northside community who were given a name and one name wrong because he lost his arm in a collision with a tree on a slender toboggan on the Indian hill because people had names that didn't mean they were lesser thought of or anything like that.Well just nicknames and they're the characters that made you into the person that you are because you knew that right.Yeah. They were characters but they were characters. And you know I didn't put words to put to it but it was just people who didn't get all upset about that name when I was called Billy or Bill or William didn't make any difference and I told the story about how and maybe I need to collectability the hand of a 50 of class reunion. We're sitting there in one of the lovely ladies of our high school class said Billy why didn't you ever ask me out on a date. And I said Derek I'm going to go back to the name. Billy.Let me ask you this. What's that. What's the memory. If you were to if you were to tell somebody about your childhood what's the biggest memory or the memory that sets out the most.Probably going fishing to brace prairie sitting in the back of the pickup truck of Phil Vitaliy in the car across the street. It had a place for people up front. Mom and Dad. Phil and Mabel vitality and then those four kids and some amount of the fifth riding the back of the pickup truck up 35 Z and then Z as far as who would go. And we'd stay up there two days a week we do this and we'd stay up there all day and a nice lunch would be prepared for us in the cabin which was the cottage and we'd fish from the bank and get a little older. We would push off in a rowboat. Good safe water and fish all day and then get thrown in the back of the truck and come home. The adults have a little more adult fun time. You can figure that one out. Yes it was. So that's one of the things that really members the more memorable part was Christmas at the tempting family. We read organ and my mother played the carols on the organ and as kids learned to sing at an early age. And my dear Dad would put on a Christmas program in the living room of this little bitty house of ours. The main living area and the mother would sit at the organ and play carols and ask kids. We were the three wise men because we had bathrobes that were checkered looked appropriate. My poor dear sister had to play Mary with the little darling baby and we'd stand there and sing Christmas carols and the neighbors would come in the front door stand on the step out there with the front door open middle of winter. And that was our gift as a family to the neighbors for Christmas and Christmas tree was a masterpiece every year drilling holes and sticking branches until we discovered how my uncle he would get the biggest haul us with the spaces of all the spaces out and pay them back together and have the most perfect Christmas tree you could ever find. It was make your own tree. And most people just had kind of a scrubby tree and put a lot of tinsel hanging tinsel and stuff. Christmas was very special because that involved first of all Trinity Lutheran. Was a wonderful church for many people the church of the North Side. St. James was a Catholic and Trinity was the Lutheran so Christmas and fishing had tried to have these cottage or the two memories that still live very much with me deep in my heart. You said that your your uncle worked at the brewery. Was there a brewery on the north side or was it just it was just the Highland girls haven and was there was there any small breweries on the north side that you recall those days.Ol La Crosse Beer song. I've never heard that before. Well it disappeared many years ago. That used to be the liquor was drinking beer so any parting words fell anything that you want to share that I know that I had maybe didn't ask.No I've enjoyed sharing memories of the north side with you and with the people who choose to listen to the things I have to say. It's all done from me in love for the north side and my experiences and growing up there.

Synopsis for Gotham S02E22 Transference Podcast Directed by: Eagle Egilsson Written by: Bruno Heller Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) are trapped at Indian Hill, held prisoners by Hugo Strange (BD Wong) as Basil disguised as Jim Gordon draws the GCPD away from Arkham Asylum. In the basement, Hugo Strange, using truth serum on Jim, along with Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), using the threat of poison gas on Bruce and Lucius, question the three hostages to find out what they really know about who controls Gotham. At the same time Strange prepares to evacuate all of his test subjects up State and detonate a bomb to destroy all evidence of Indian Hill at the command of the secretive Council. Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) has other plans and gains control of Miss Peabody who allows her to break free of her cell. Fish wreaks havoc in Indian Hill thwarting Strange's escape plan. As Bruce, Jim and Lucius also escape, aided by Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), they manage to stop the bomb just in the nick of time to save Arkham and apprehend Strange. However, Fish escapes Arkham in a bus loaded with Indian Hill inmates but encounters old friends - Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) - who mistakenly think they are taking out Professor Strange. As Butch and his gang flee at the sight of a resurrected Fish Mooney, a shocked Oswald is put to sleep by her newfound powers. In the aftermath, Jim leaves Gotham to find Leslie Thompkins, Harvey grudgingly accepts his role as Captain of the GCPD, Bruce sets his sights on the secretive Court much to the irritation of Alfred (Sean Pertwee) and the city of Gotham will be met with a new threat as Strange's creations escape the bus and start their new lives in Gotham. SPOILERS/NSFW - DC on SCREEN #179 - Gotham 2x21 – A Legion of Horribles | Review - Hugo Strange brings Fish Mooney back using the DNA of a cuttlefish. Unlike the other patients, Fish remembers who she is. She also has nifty new fingernail powers of persuasion! Or just long fingernails on her hand which she uses for her powers of persuasion! Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne is worried about Selena (Alfred is very disappointed in Bruce), and Lucius drives Bruce to Arkham so Jim Gordon can dress up like a security guard, see what wall Lucius marked during his tour with Peabody, and make it down to Indian Hill. Strange and Bruce chat, and that gets super weird super fast as Strange thinks it’s okay to pretty much admit to having involvement in Thomas’ murder and warning Bruce not to go down the same path. Everybody gets grabbed! Bruce and Lucius are thrown into a gas chamber where Nygma (who has of course wormed his way into Strange’s good graces) interrogates them about what they know in regards to Strange) while Strange uses some steampunk looking crap to make Clayface look like Jim Gordon! Also Selina convinces a brainwashed Firefly that she needs a servant. So Selina is saved! Oh, yeah! THE COURT OF OWLS are totally in charge of Strange!
