A single diagnosis turned Shannon's world upside down, and it all began with a shocking phone call about suspicious spots on her liver. What followed was a whirlwind of emotions and a decade-long journey through misdiagnosis, severe symptoms, and the pursuit of education in Jamaica, all while grappling with the fear of a potential liver metastasis. Amidst this personal health saga, she found solace in the unwavering support of loved ones and the invaluable lesson of listening to her own body. These trials and tribulations underscore the critical importance of self-care and the power of advocacy when faced with medical adversities.Life with an ostomy bag and cancer was a struggle Shannon never anticipated, yet humor became a saving grace. Her candid reflections on living with an ostomy, coupled with an amusing anecdote from a campaign rally for President Obama, reveal the unexpected ways laughter can be found in life's toughest moments. This chapter of Shannon's journey, marked by initial shock and eventual acceptance, highlights the resilience required to maintain quality of life amidst medical challenges. Moreover, it illustrates the transformative power of relationships, particularly the deepened bond with her mother as they weathered these storms together.Honoring the legacy of Lee Silverstein, Blue Couch Chat was born out of a desire to create a platform for authentic storytelling within the African descent community. About This Episode:Cancer Patient Advocate Joe Bullock returns for the second installment of his interview with the Our Cancer Journey Podcast with Bruce Watkins. This episode picks up from where Part-1 of our interview with Joe left off ( #009 – From Caregiver, to Surviving Cancer, to Patient Support Advocate Part 1 – Joe Bullock ).In this episode, Joe and Bruce discuss the challenges of being a caregiver for an estranged parent, how Joe overcame those barriers to provide meaningful support to his father, and how Joe found forgiveness and strength in his heart. When cancer arrived in Joe's life, he use those lessons from being a caregiver to help ensure his relationship with his spouse and his children was as healthy as possible. Joe also shares the challenges he faced as a typical man in dealing with the uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis.Surprisingly, this episode is exceptionally positive, so much so that host Bruce Watkins and Joe laugh almost continuously through the show at the absurdity an irony of many of the situations cancer patients face. The end of the episode introduces Joe's motivation to get involved with helping others. In an upcoming episode, Joe will return to discuss how he became involved with the Man Up to Cancer patient advocacy support group, and his passion for helping pediatric cancer patients and their families.Hear Episode #009 - PART-1 of the OCJ Podcast interview with Joe Bullock:https://www.ourcancerjourney.com/2021/06/08/009-from-caregiver-to-surviving-cancer-to-patient-support-advocate-part-1-joe-bullock/References and Resources mentioned in this Episode:Man Up To Cancer - The Howling Place Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/manuptocancer/Man Up To Cancer Podcast with Trevor Maxwell: https://manuptocancer.captivate.fm/Colontown: https://colontown.org/We Have Cancer Podcast with Lee Silverstein: https://wehavecancershow.com/ Episode Host: Bruce WatkinsA Father, Cancer survivor, producer, podcaster, writer & content creator, speaker, voice-over artist, facilitator/moderator, avid traveler, cultural explorer, humanitarian, giving-back & minimalist evangelist, music enthusiast, former Corporate people leader, and curious soul who transformed into an unapologetically optimistic and unpretentious advocate of Life-Optimization for all. In this first of a 2-Part episode, traditional Southern (U.S.) guy Joe Bullock walks us through his unexpected cancer journey where he moved through multiple roles. Our raw and authentic conversation with Joe provides us great insights on how to support caregivers, being an adult-child caregiver for a difficult aging parent, the importance of communication with your life-partner during diagnosis and treatments, how to navigate a personal cancer experience with your immediate family (especially children), and much more. This Part-1 episode sets the stage for how Joe transformed his life from “Average Guy” into a passionate advocate for men to seek out support during their cancer journey, and a dedicated supporter for pediatric Cancer patients. In Part-2 of our interview with Joe, we will discuss how he and his fellow Colon Cancer Survivor Trevor Maxwell (host of the Man Up To Cancer Podcast) came to found the Facebook Group for Men's Support, “Man Up To Cancer - The Howling Place,” as well as Joe's other giving back efforts. ——Key Discussion Points and Takeaways from this Our Cancer Journey Podcast Episode:How a routine colonoscopy detected a Stage-3 Colon Cancer diagnosisThe importance of speaking immediately and candidly with family members, especially parents, about your family health historyHow “stepping up” and providing care for a loved one with Cancer, even when there have been issues with that person, can provide blessings and benefitsHow having a previous experience as a caregiver can make you a more compassionate patient toward your future caregiversThe importance of shaping individual communications about a cancer diagnosis to children of different ages, and how that communication does not end after the initial conversationHow moving into a home across the street from your parents always turns into an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, ……. Always!——References and Resources mentioned in this Episode:Man Up To Cancer - The Howling Place Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/manuptocancer/Man Up To Cancer Podcast with Trevor Maxwell: https://manuptocancer.captivate.fm/Colontown: https://colontown.org/We Have Cancer Podcast with Lee Silverstein: https://wehavecancershow.com/ Episode Guest(s): Joe Bullock:Joe Bullock worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry while his wife was a registered nurse at a children's hospital in their North Carolina town. In response to her variable schedule, the couple decided that Joe would become a stay at home Dad in order to provide their young children a sense of stability. When dropping off his kids at pre-school, Joe was recruited to teach pre-K classes there, a role he thrived in for 20 years. The lessons Joe learned when he became a caregiver for his Father, a man who Joe had a difficult relationship with for years, helped him to navigate his later personal Colon Cancer diagnosis. After surviving his cancer experience, Joe felt called to encourage other men to connect with others and seek support via the creation of a growing Facebook community. Joe also now is organizing support for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Hey, this is Joe Bakhmoutski and welcome to Simplify Cancer Podcast! Today you meet with Lee Silverstein who had cancer twice in his life, once as a child and once as an adult. He has such an incredible attitude and he's using it to live the life the best way that he can and to help other people through his podcast called We Have Cancer. Through this podcast, Lee shares information, inspiration, and hope for living the best life you can despite cancer. Here are some things that we cover today: Lee's inspirational A-G-E approach to dealing with cancer One powerful mindset that can help you during treatment How relationships and friendships can change after cancer and much, much more! Links We Have Cancer podcast Full Transcript Joe: Lee, I love your photos on Facebook and on your website and with you and your Batman gear. Can you talk about that? Lee: I've been dealing with colon cancer for eight years. The largest colon cancer support organisation in the U.S. is the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. They do a run, a 5k run, and a walk at different cities all over the country. Each weekend a different city. The first one is always in Tampa, Florida, which was last weekend. Instead of giving out, like most of these events, they give out t-shirts, but because it's the other part of the body, they give out boxer shorts. That's where the undi-name comes from. People dress in funny costumes. I was always a batman fan when I was a kid, so we called my team: Lee's Superheroes, and we all dressed up with batman shirts and shorts and boxers and all of that. Joe: Yes, that's fantastic, Lee. I love that because I think both you and me, and I guess actually many of us, have really uncomfortable cancers in the most uncomfortable parts of the body. Like, I had testicular cancer, you had colon cancer. It feels weird to start to talk about it because it's private and sensitive, right? Lee: True, but I tell people when it comes to my disease, everybody uses the bathroom, everybody uses the toilet, and because we all do it, it shouldn't be something embarrassing. I know it is, but I tell people: Don't let embarrassment kill you. I interview so many people on my podcast who either they themselves waited and waited too long because they were embarrassed to say anything, to talk to their doctor. Then the disease was more advanced than it should have been. What's worse? Being a little bit embarrassed or having to go through chemotherapy? Joe: Yes, exactly. I think that's why it's even more important, like you say, to talk about it and to be honest and upfront. Just so people feel more comfortable to show up at the doctors and say, “Can you have a look at this? Can you check it out?” Lee: Absolutely. You're absolutely right. Joe: Lee, I was really shocked to hear your story that you really first had cancer as a child. What was that experience like? Lee: Well, from what I remember, when I was four or five years old, I'm surprised how much I do remember, the story behind that is when I was growing up, I had one sister at the time, another sister came along a few years later. We were always getting sick, especially in the winter time, strep throat, throat infections. When I was a kid, the popular surgery was to have your tonsils out if you kept getting throat infections. They said, “We think we should take his tonsils out.” My parents took me to the hospital the day before the surgery just to do all the testing and bloodwork and all of that. Something showed up very unusual in my blood test. They said, wait a minute, this is not good, something's going on here. They did some tests and found a spot on my kidney. It turned out to be a rare form of paediatric kidney cancer called a Wilms Tumour. Now, a Wilms Tumour if caught early,

Guest Lee Silverstein Lee Silverstein is a stage 4 colon cancer survivor and the host of the WE Have Cancer podcast. WE Have Cancer (http://www.wehavecancershow.com) On today’s episode of Causecasts we are so happy and honored to have Lee Silverstein, host of the WE Have Cancer Podcast, as our guest. Lee created this podcast a few years ago as a way to inspire hope and connection within the community of people affected by cancer. Lee’s positive and realistic outlook has directed the tone and reach of his work, which now has a humble yet committed and engaged following, and for Lee, there is nothing that he would rather be putting his time into. During our interview, he even shares that the years since his diagnosis have been the best of his life. After being diagnosed about 6 years ago, a fateful encounter with a friend and an emerging podcast community led to a clear realization of his path, one that he has followed with passion and dedication since. Our conversation includes this origin story of how WE Have Cancer was born; as well as some meditation on what it means to host a podcast with guests whose life expectancy is generally uncertain. Lee sees his work sharing these stories as the ultimate way to honor and provide grace for both guests and listeners, and has experienced the profound effect of this process himself. Lee also explains why he sees podcasting as such a powerful medium for the message he is broadcasting. He acknowledges the direct line it provides to the human voice and how it is something he has come to cherish greatly. As you might expect with a conversation such as this, it is both hopeful and sad, beautiful yet tragic, and this bittersweet atmosphere is touching on many levels. For a truly heartfelt and deeply inspiring discussion be sure to tune in to hear what Lee has to say. Key Topics: • How Lee wound up hosting a podcast dealing with cancer. (01:25) • Lee’s surprise at the lifespan and reach of his podcast. (03:37) • Hope and inspiration as the main reasons for Lee’s work. (04:55) • How Lee manages the emotional and physical toll of dealing with cancer as a topic. (06:57) • Lee’s connection to the podcast format and the uniqueness of his product. (09:07) • Audio and the human voice as an effective means of connection. (11:20) • A particularly meaningful relationship Lee had with an interviewee. (12:27) • Lee’s belief in serving and honoring those who have or will pass on. (15:29) • Advice from Lee to anyone thinking about starting a podcast with a cause. (17:41) • Why it is okay to get something out of a selfless service. (19:57) • Where Lee is at with his own personal journey and health. (22:22) • The difficulties that arise even with such an inspiring outlook. (24:34) • And much more! Thursday, February 18, 2016 was a busier day than most. As Founder and Executive Director of Podfest, one of the largest annual conferences for podcasting in the country, Chris Krimitsos was running in seven different directions, locking down final details for the Second Annual Podfest, which was opening the next week. As he was frantically crisscrossing Tampa that day, Chris was struck by just how many established and respected podcasters were going to be attending the next weekend’s conference – folks like Danny Peña, Glenn the Geek, Lee Silverstein, Katie Krimitsos, Jessica Kupferman, Dave Jackson, Diane Daniels, and so many more. Chris began envisioning a way to utilize all the talent he’d have under one roof to inspire others via their stories. As often happens in creative endeavors, that kernel of an idea soon blossomed into a full-fledged film. http://themessengersdoc.com https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/the-messengers-a-podcast-documentary/id1257943142 The Inventors Launchpad – Roadmap to Success Series is presented by Inventors Launchpad in beautiful Tampa Bay, FL and hosted by Carmine Denisco. New Apple Specs Coming In the future, Apple Podcasts app will support some new features including: One the podcast level you will have Seasons Serial and Episodic podcast types On the Episode level Title, episode number, and season number Summary and episode notes Trailers and bonus content GUID (don’t change it!) I am worried when I read the text, "New subscribers will receive the first episode in their Library, or the current season if using seasons. " As we don't know what "will receive" means. Does this mean it will automatically download an entire season? We don't know. If it does, I can see people abusing this to get more downloads. There are already people sending old content back to their audience just to juice their download numbers. They also mention not to change the GUID. The GUID is a unique number that identifies your episode. Changing this number will have the app seeing the episode as new. You should never change this number. Apple is saying "Don't change this." This is kind of like saying "Don't stick that knife in the outlet" to a two-year-old. In my opinion, this is a bad idea to even give people access to this. New Listener Stats Apple will provide statistics on how many listeners you have, minutes per listener, Abandonment Point, and Average Completion. The statistics are "Launching this year." The other thing I'm worried about is currently people OBSESS over their podcast numbers. They release an episode, FREAK OUT that it's not in their iTunes listing, and want to know why they don't have download number immediately. This will give podcasters more stats to obsess over. Also, you may not be ready for the shock when you find out that only 48% of your audience is listening to the entire of your episode. None of This Matters Yet If I told you there was a new audio format and it was going to sound great and do all sorts of new fun stuff, but there aren't any players that can play it yet the news wouldn't mean anything. You can't experience any of the new stuff until players are available. These new features won't come into play until iOS11 is available (that will have the new Podcasts App). So it's exciting, but the time to celebrate and figure out how to get these new tags into our RSS feeds should be something we worry about later. I'm sure Libsyn, Blubrry, and Speaker (and any other Podcast Media hosts worth anything) will have systems in place shortly. I know patience is not a characteristic of some podcasters, but for now, know things are going to get better later this year. Here are the details from Apple. Becuase of My Podcast: I Got a Gig as an Audio Editor Jeff Perry has had multiple version of shows about podcasting. He has really enjoyed editing them into different forms. He recently landed a job working for Emerald City Productions as an audio editor. Check out Jeff's show at https://podcastingspark.com/ Great Follow Up Questions Make Great Podcasts Your homework for today is to reach out to a podcast you listen to, and let them know you enjoy their show (I call this "putting gas in their tank). For me I did this after listening to Lee Silverstein on Podcast Junkies What Podcasters Can Learn From Kevin Hart I remember watching the comedy special I'm a Grown Little Man and he was hilarious as he shared stories about his family. At the end, he said, "I want to show you why I do this," and brought out his two little children. It was touching, and transparent. I've seen copier salesmen drag their kids around as a gimmick. This just seemed genuine. I've seen every one of his specials since then, and when his book came out, I instantly got the audio version (read by Kevin) on Audible. (you can get it for free if you're new to audible). I always if you can make me laugh, cry, think, groan, educate, or entertain me I'm in. This book did all of that, but the things that podcasters can take away from this story is Kevin's relentless pursuit of getting better at his craft. You also see how those "hard times" that we have often come back to life in a way that you are thankful that you had them. Here are some of the things that jumped out of the book: Kevin's Father is crazy. He did things to his children that were cruel. One time he stole a bike and tried to give it to Kevin as a present. His Mom knew it was stolen, and instantly made Kevin give it back. He "borrowed" a neighborhood dog and gave it to his children, only to have the neighbor come back and get the dog. Kevin soon realized, his father wasn't going to win any medals for "Father of the year."He accepted it, but instead of hating his father, he forgave him. Kevin got a mentor after making it "big" in Philidelphia and wanted to takes grow his career. He drove from Philidelphia to New York City (according to Google Maps that is one hour and forty-five minutes one way). He would then sit and watch his mentor perform a numerous clubs. He wouldn't get to sit at the table with all the comedians. He was building a relationship with his mentor, and eventually would be able to do five minutes of stand-up. To boil this down, he spent three hours in a car, three or four times a week, to perform for five minutes. His career starting taking off. He started getting some acting roles. He was in a movie called Fools Gold (it tanked) and later was in Soul Plane. Soul plane has historical relevance as one of the most bootlegged movies in history. People were watching a DVD of the movie before post-production was finished. Consequently, when it came out nobody went to see it. Kevin had worked so hard to get this point, but with two flops under his belt, nobody would cast him in any movies. So what did he do? Sink into oblivion? Instead, he decided to build his career up so much, that they HAD to put him in a film. So once again, he went back to working on his craft. He wanted to be good. He did this for seven years. Seven years. There is no practice in comedy. This is why big comedians play smaller venues. They want to test their material. The only way to get better is to do it. The only way to get better is to increase you stage time. It is the same with podcasting. You can read all about it. You can watch videos, record episodes, but you don't know if it's any good until you let someone not named Mom listen to it. Kevin got deals that lead to nothing. He figured out that the reason why things weren't working with TV is other people were writing for him. So he creates a sitcom. Then it got turned into a pilot, and YES, it got picked up. They filmed the show, and he was flown to New York to this big event to meet all the people at the networks and he is ready to walk on stage and tell the world who he is and tell them about his show. He is on the side of the stage when the stage manager tells him NOT to go on stage. Instead, they send the cast of another show onto the stage to promote their stuff. Wait, what? What was going on? Seconds before Kevin was to go on to a stage and introduce himself to a nationwide audience, he is informed his show was dropped. Can you imagine? Growing up Kevin's mother was BEYOND strict. There was a lot of "NO" in Kevin's childhood. There was a fair amount of embarrassment in his childhood. In all case, Kevin would shrug his shoulders, say, "OK" and go back to making his stand up better. To quote a famous comedy manager Barry Katz, "If you are undeniable, you won't be denied." Kevin as a Brand Kevin had some people helping him. One person was threatening people when it came time to pay Kevin. He was very assertive and people didn't' want to work with him. Kevin always focused not on just his jokes, but what was the experience like. He wanted a nice theater. He wanted people to have fun, and not worry about getting into fights, etc. Kevin Listened When Kevin was a child his mother was strict. He didn't agree with the rules, but he followed them. All those "No's" from his Mother help prepare Kevin for the movie business where you go on audition after audition. His jokes, in the beginning, were funny, but any comic could have told those jokes. There was very little about Kevin in the act. Some of his stories were made up. His mentor kept saying, your life is funny. Talk about you. Kevin had a stage name. George Carlin, Richard Pryor, none of the great comedians had a stage name (Kevin's names was Lil' Kev the Bastard). He changed his name. He Listened. His name is his brand. At one point he was offered to play a very large comedy event in Canada. This is a launching pad for many comedians. His manager told him he wasn't ready. He wasn't happy, but he listened. When he was invited back the next year, he was ready. It worked, and it began his come back." The bottom line is Kevin's attitude is AMAZING, and we can learn a lot about how to handle adversity in your life based on his attitude. Summary Being told no over and over build endurance When you have "Downtime" use it to work on your craft It's better to forgive than to hold a grudge Make sure people have a good experience consuming your content Always strive to do more, but have an attitude of gratitude for the things you have. Lee Silverstein is a survivor of childhood cancer and was later diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer in 2011 after undergoing a routine colonoscopy. When he attended a podcasters meet-up in 2014 he was inspired to start his own podcast, the Colon Cancer Podcast, where he provides people the hope and support they need when they are told they have cancer. By providing cancer survivors and caretakers a platform to share their stories, Lee is a constant inspiration for the many people who have been affected by colon cancer. 06:57 - The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary 08:55 - How he felt about seeing himself on the “big screen” 09:34 - His colon cancer diagnosis 11:17 - How his idea for the Colon Cancer Podcast started 15:12 - How his community of supporters has helped provide the fuel for his podcast 16:55 - The first time he realized his podcast was making an impact on people’s lives 21:36 - A.G.E. and how spending time at the gym has helped him deal with his cancer 23:07 - How having a positive attitude has helped him battle cancer 27:16 - The factors that impacted his self-confidence growing up 28:46 - My older sister who passed away from leukemia 30:01 - What he remembers about having cancer as a child 31:00 - His fondest TV show memory 32:07 - The story of his connection with Greg Trout 34:44 - Determining who he wants on the podcast and finding topics for the show 36:38 - How having his podcast has helped him expand his own knowledge of cancer 38:23 - Podcasting as a cancer patient 42:46 - How he landed his first sponsor 45:17 - How his confidence has grown as a podcaster 47:49 - The events and communities of Chris Krimitsos 53:03 - His next podcast goals 55:48 - The tutelage of Glen the Geek 57:01 - What he’s changed his mind about recently 59:15 - The one most misunderstood thing about him Full Show Notes: http://podcastjunkies.com/lee-silverstein-interview/★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

I honestly don’t know how I would do this show without you. Sean Low, my business consultant since 2011 who has helped me to structure my businesses such that I can truly let my creativity live and breathe and fully experience my vision and dreams. Rebecca Steele, my Executive Vice President of Andy Kushner Entertainment Design, who essentially runs that business so effectively that I can even give the time and focus that allows this show to exist. Shout out goes to my friend of 40 years, Lee Silverstein, also a fellow podcaster, for inspiring me to finally get off my ass and attend my first Podfest conference, created and run by Chris Krimitsos, and then to start my other show, which led to this one. To Cindy, my sweet and generous cousin: I can’t thank you enough for offering your beautiful home in Maui, to me, while you were away for what became a magical month for me. I don’t know if I would have had the inspiration and deep level of serendipity, that touched my heart and soul while there, which led to this creative outlet of expression for me. Thank you thank you thank you. My mother, Lorraine Kushner, who nurtured the artist in me as a child and young adult and who continues to be a great source of support and inspiration as well as a tremendous role model for living a happy and fulfilling life. My brother, David Kushner, who is a deeply talented narrative non-fiction writer, journalist, screenwriter and whose love and support I am forever grateful. To Shelley, thank you thank you thank you for all you did to help create an environment for me to continue to build my music business, and especially in those early growth years..…wow! To the memory of my father Gilbert, a brilliant Applied Anthropologist, devoted father and role model for living a life of passion and service—I miss you deeply. I dedicate this show to the memory of my brother, Jon, who himself was an extraordinary person. Though your life was short-lived, it was still nonetheless a life fully-lived. I believe one gift resulting from the experience of having you as one of my younger brothers and the experience of then losing you is what helped give me the capacity for a deep sense of empathy without which this show would not exist. There are many many more family members, friends, and mentors whom I wish I could list…just know that your love and support means more than you could possibly imagine. And last but not least, to YOU: Know that no matter what struggles and challenges you go through, that your life is indeed extraordinary and may you find continued inspiration through these recorded conversations. When you create a recipe for food, you serve it to someone and ask them "What do you think?' They might say, "it needs more salt" or some other suggestion. It is then up to you like the chef to decide if you want to implement that recommendation or not. It's not any different in podcasting, but I feel we don't take the time to ask out audience, "What do you think?" So I decided to do this, and bring you along. I asked two simple questions (thanks to Lee Silverstein of the Colon Cancer Podcast who did this first) and saw what kind of feedback I got. You Think You're Going to Get Butchered, But You're Not If you are asking your audience, if they are your audience - they like you. If they have any negative comments, they will probably attempt to deliver them with kid gloves. By Know What Works, You Can Do More I feel like a bit of an egomaniac today, as much of the show it telling me how much people like my show, but I was more interested in WHY they like my show, and I learned: I make things easy to understand (which is my #1 priority) I am a likable guy I make people laugh I get to the point I'm willing to speak my mind People understand my intentions to help people I'm not judgemental I'm encouraging I share insights into my life and do a great job of relating those stories to podcasting Here are some great ideas on how I can improve my show (from listener feedback): Put episode numbers in your posts for easier searching Try not to repeat the same content on the School of Podcasting as I do on my Ask the Podcast Coach show. (some people listen to both) Mention that I have a newsletter more often Be more confident in my sales pitch. Maybe not so many appearances of my cat. Here are some suggestions from my audience that I'm not going to implement One person said that the phrase "Tackle the technology" was not entirely correct. I like the "Theater of the mind of that phrase, so it's staying. One person doesn't like the "Ladies" that sing my jingle. For now, I love my jingle in the same way I loved the theme music for Johnny Carson. I know much more people who LOVE the ladies. You're Not Going to Please Everyone Some people like my cat and other could live without the "Bernie blooper real." Some people like my intro and other do not. Lee Silverstein supports people dealing with cancer, and he's an all round connector of individuals. He has a podcast called The Colon Cancer Podcast which he created in 2015, after being diagnosed with Colon Cancer in 2011. Since then, Lee has created The Cancer Radio Network. Lee has helped countless numbers of people through his show and his all around caring personality. Contact Info Website: www.TheCancerRadioNetwork.com Twitter: @Lee_Silverstein / @CancerRadioNet Podcast: The Colon Cancer Podcast Most Influential Person My youngest sister, Margie. Effect on Emotions It's helped keep me centered and it's helped me enjoy the little things that are in front of us every day. In our society, you hear phrases like, thank god it's Friday, or the weekend's coming. I just don't subscribe to that because you're ignoring what could be right in front of you today on Monday. Monday could be an amazing day. And Tuesday could be an amazing day. Why do we have to look forward to something in the future to find that happiness? You can touch someone and have an impact on someone's life or something special could be right in front of you if you just take the time to look. Thoughts on Breathing I watched a video a couple of years ago by Dr. Andrew Weil who shared a calming, breathing practice. Perhaps many of Mindful Tribe have heard this. It's the 4 - 7 - 8 breathing cadence. You slowly inhale for the count of 4. You hold your breath for the count of 7. You exhale for the count of 8. You do that four times. It brings you centered, it slows your heart rate and brings you calmness. It's a nice thing to do if you're having a little trouble trying to fall asleep. When you first lay down, do four of those and it calms you, keeps you centered and really helps you take on a mindfulness mode. Suggested Resources Book: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruis App: Reminder App on my phone Bullying Story I grew up in a very close family. I have two younger sisters. I'm very close with my sisters, my parents, all of my cousins. But we moved around fairly frequently all through grade school. Dad was fortunate in that new and better jobs seemed to come his way fairly often which meant I didn't spend more than two years in the same school from kindergarten up until ninth grade. Being the new kid in school is not most student's favorite role to be in. That resulted in quite a bit of bullying until high school. In high school that was not an issue. There's a lot of not great memories of being bullied, for being the new kid, for not being the most athletic kid. All the same reasons unfortunately that kids like to pick on other children. I do have some fairly vivid memories about that.

Lee has been battling cancer since he was five years old, and he considers himself more than "A podcaster," but a messenger. He delivers hope, information, and inspiration. Today we hear: Feedback from his audience that brought Lee to tears How Lee has secured three sponsors by finding products that fits his niche perfectly How Lee had strict criteria for his sponsors What pitch Lee uses to get sponsors. A "Because of my podcast" story that you HAVE to hear. Mentioned in this interview Lee's Colon Cancer Podcast Glenn the Geek from Horse Radio Network Hear Glenn be interviewed on the Sop Pofest in Orlando go to www.podfest.us Podcast Glossary "E" Episode zero Episode zero is a podcast episode that is often a simple introduction episode used as a placeholder as you need one live podcast in iTunes. In my opinion, I would do more than introduce yourself. We always want to deliver value in our podcast episodes, and right now your audience doesn't know you, and probably (to be honest) doesn't care who are what you are. They are asking, "What is in it for me?" Be sure to give them something that makes them wish there were more episodes. Why My Eleven Years of Podcasting Sets Me Apart I recently discovered another "Podcast About Podcasting," and was checking it out. I'm sure the host is a fine person that loves their family and wants to help their audience. Some people come into the space, and only repeat the favorite memes at the time and never go about checking if they are true. So I threw up in my mouth a bit when I heard them perpetuating the same old podcasting tips that are just wrong. This included The Blue Yetis is a great microphone (it is if you are in a very, very, very, quiet room - which 99.9% of podcasters are not - so it's NOT a great microphone) You only get 8 weeks to be in new and noteworthy (TV show podcasts go in and out of New and Noteworthy all the time) You should launch with at least three episodes so when people subscribe you get three downloads (this is false. It does not happen automatically. Your listen would have to choose to download the back catalog) My friend Ravi from Digital Access Pass as well as two podcasts (subscribeme.fm about membership websites, and Cut to the Chase )has a new book out called Confessions of a Wanna Be Podcast Star that goes over many of the myths that a puked out over and over. In the book he covers these myths and much more. Now for the record, Ravi uses a Blu Yeti, but thankfully in his book explains how you need a really quiet room (which he has). I was quoted quite a bit in the book, as well as other podcast consultants. In some cases, Ravi did his own investigation and provided screenshots to show the results of his research. I read it over two nights and found it an easy read, will be pointing people to it in the future when I see they have been sucked into the bad advice train that comes through the Internet on a regular basis. Take Aways From DC Podfest This was a great event for me. I met so many people who I had never met and were brand new to podcasting. The event was run very professional, and all the speakers were great in keeping to their time slots. One of the coolest phrases to describe what we do as podcasters. We are digital influencers. Put that on your business card. I heard about Amolto from Mathew Passy from podtopod.com which is a skype recording software for the PC (that I will need to check out). Keep your interactions from Social Media. So for me, I had some people say some very nice things about my presentation on twitter. Take a screen shot and put those on your website. http://www.gratisography.com/ a cool site for Royalty Free images which I have added to podcastingresources.com. Welcome, Medicare Nation! Today’s guest is Lee Silverstein, who is a colon cancer survivor. Lee is here to discuss the risks, prevalence, and treatments for this disease. Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed but also the most preventable through proper screening. The American Cancer Society estimates that 95,000 people will be newly diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. Over their lifetimes, 1 in 21 men and 1 in 23 women will be diagnosed! Colon cancer is clearly not “the old man’s disease” that many of us have been led to believe. Let’s hear Lee’s amazing story! Why has colon cancer become so widespread for people under age 40? “Over the last few years, the rates for diagnosis have remained steady, with a huge increase in the number of cases in people under age 40. It is scary, alarming, and unexplainable by doctors. I recently attended a conference on colon cancer and met a newly diagnosed 23-year-old. The common risk factors are being overweight, a lack of physical activity, a diet rich in red meat, heavy smoking and alcohol use. Keep in mind that you can have NONE of these risk factors and still be diagnosed with the disease, like what happened to me.” Would you mind telling our Medicare Nation listeners your personal story? “Not at all—I would love to share my story. I had NO risk factors and had just turned 50, living a very health-conscious life. I exercised regularly and was eating smart. I had a colonoscopy in March 2011, and the doctor couldn’t get the scope where he needed it to go. I wasn’t alarmed, but received a call from the doctor two days later saying I had a tumor in my transverse colon. This colonoscopy saved my life!” Would you share what your treatment was? “I had colon cancer and needed to have the tumor removed; the surgeon was confident that he could remove it all. My cancer was classified as Stage 2, which meant it was borderline as to whether there were benefits to undergoing chemotherapy. I got three opinions and determined that the benefits of chemo did NOT outweigh the risk. My follow-up exam included a CT scan and bloodwork, which showed a small spot on my liver. A biopsy was ordered and showed that my colon cancer had spread to my liver, even though it was a small spot and slow-growing. Surgery was recommended and chemotherapy. I went to Sloan-Kettering, which was the hospital I had been treated at as a child when I had a rare kidney cancer. The liver surgeon there was confident that I would be fine. Surgery was scheduled for January 2013 and I finished chemo treatments in August. In 2014, two small spots on my lungs were discovered. The doctor suspected that it was colon cancer that had metastasized to my lungs. He wanted to treat it with SBRT, a cyberknife-type targeted radiation procedure. In normal radiation, low doses are given over a wide area over a long period of time, with damage to the surrounding tissue. In this procedure, pinpointed high doses are given over a short time. I had the treatment with no side effects, and was even able to continue training for a race. The one spot disappeared and the other shrunk significantly. I’m not cancer-free, but I am stable. The goal of colon cancer treatment is to make it a chronic manageable disease.” Can you tell Medicare Nation listeners about the Colon Cancer Alliance? “I found this organization when I was first diagnosed. They are the largest patient support non-profit organization for colon cancer, based in Washington, DC. They do research and provide online support.” Medicare provides several levels of preventive care and testing for colon cancer: Barium enema is allowed every 24 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Colonoscopy is allowed every 120 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Fecal blood tests are allowed every 12 months. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is allowed every 48 months for people over 50. Multitargeted DNA test is allowed every 3 years for people aged 50-85. This is a new test with many stipulations. Plans, coverage, and co-payments differ. Some procedures are free, but related surgical procedures (like to remove polyps) are NOT free. Tell our listeners about your podcast. “I started The Colon Cancer Podcast about a year ago. I interview survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals. We share stories of struggle, hope, and survival in the face of colorectal cancer.” Tell us about the “Undie Run.” “These are 5K events sponsored by the Colon Cancer Alliance. We run around in our underwear! Events are held 2-3 times each month, in different cities around the country from February through October. The events are to raise funds and raise awareness of the disease.” Resources: www.ccalliance.org 877-422-2030 Find the Facebook group: Blue Hope Nation Special Bonus!
