Emiliana Mangone, Guido Gili"Speranza. A hybrid seminar by Prof Cathriona Russell (School of Religion, Theology and Peace Studies) as part of the Medical and Health Humanities Seminar Series. Healthcare faces comparable challenges to those of every other sector in society in the context of a changing climate. In relation to ongoing international agreements, healthcare will, for example, have to enact mitigation strategies for net-zero in its contributions to emissions, currently c.4.5% of global GHG emissions. More significantly however healthcare will need to design strategies for adaptation, aiming at resilience in ongoing provision and effectiveness in securing justice; resilience in the face of more extensive and more frequent temperature and precipitation extremes, sea level rise, changes in land-use and food production; and resilience in social conditions, in housing provision, in providing access to health care, in disease prevention, all while demographies continually shift (age and gender, poverty, and displacement)[1]. The expected continuing increase in intensity and frequency of adverse events will worsen health outcomes and health inequalities, which themselves are drivers of climate change. If healthcare contributes to the ‘good life' through its impact on health, then a key measure of its effectiveness will be its commitment to building capability e.g. for preventative medicine (A. Sen), and for ‘living with and for each other in just institutions' (P. Ricoeur). ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

Is magic inherently evil, or is this a cultural construct shaped by power, religion, and philosophy? In this video, we explore the historical and theological framing of magic as 'evil,' from ancient texts like The Book of Enoch to the European witch trials and the controversial ideas of Aleister Crowley. We'll examine the concept of evil itself, from Augustine's privatio boni to Nietzsche's critique of moral binaries, and explore how magic has been interpreted in monotheistic, polytheistic, and modern esoteric traditions. Join us as we challenge the assumptions surrounding magic and evil and uncover their complex interplay across cultures and time. CONNECT & SUPPORT

While Heidegger and Derrida both contributed groundbreaking reflections on hospitality (and “hostipitality”), they failed to recognize that the host-guest relationship can only succeed if it is correlated with the notion of mutual guardianship. The lecture will describe historic guardian civilizations and then turn to Ricoeur's linguistic hospitality as a possible blueprint for future cultural hospitality. However, the latter scenario will have no need for a third party, i.e., a “translator” who mediates between host and guest. The challenge consists of designing a host-guest relationship in which both parties become each other's translators - and guardians.Tamara Albertini is a professor and department chair at the university of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Professor Albertini's research in Renaissance philosophy focuses on Nicholas of Cusa (mathematics, cosmology), Marsilio Ficino (metaphysics, aesthetics) and Charles de Bovelles.

This episode of "The Quest / How We Know," explores the great French Philosopher Paul Ricoeur's idea of a of knowledge that moves through three stages, or what I see as three levels of spiritual thought––precritical, critical, and postcritical. The third stage leads to what Ricoeur intriguingly called "the second naiveté" and what I refer to as "the second innocence" or "the second simplicity." The place of knowledge through authority is explored here. It is also proposed that Ricoeur's work leads to the reasonable conclusion that there are multiple ways of knowing.

Season five of our podcast continues with another presentation from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology' Online. This episode features Bence Peter Marosan, Budapest Business School, Pazmany Peter Catholic University.   ABSTRACT: In my presentation, I will attempt to show how a phenomenologically consequent interpretation of narrative identity would lead to eco-ethical and eco-political consequences. In particular, I will try to show the outlines of an eco-socialist theory, which implies an egalitarian approach of all living beings, and which is motivated by a phenomenological understanding of narrative identity. My presentation consists of two main parts. In the first part, I would like to treat the relationship between freedom, responsibility and – narratively conceived – personal identity, from a phenomenological point of view. The main authors of this part will be Husserl, Heidegger, Ricoeur, Lévinas and László Tengelyi. For Husserl, the narrative aspect of personal identity was already an important topic. For Heidegger, our own decisions constitute our identity. But in my opinion, there is a decisive factor, which was marginal for Heidegger, in regard of our identity and freedom: the Other. The Other's problem became central for Lévinas, and also for Ricoeur. László Tengelyi modified Ricoeur's account of narrative identity on a decisive point: he draws the attention to the role of “events of fate”; events that change the course of our lives fundamentally. In the second part I would like to show the ethical and political implications of the first part. The way in which we treat in fact the Other shows the best, who we are in real.  But the Other must not just be a human being; she or he can be a living being whatsoever. Here I would like to emphasize the eco-phenomenological motifs in Husserl (to this see also: Erazim Kohák); and I will try to show how such motifs lead to an egalitarian, eco-socialist view of everything which lives.   BIO: Bence Peter Marosan's PhD Studies were on Philosophy and Phenomenology, and conducted at the institutes of Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), University College Dublin (Ireland), Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany), Université Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne, École Normale Supérieure, (France). His affiliations are now with the Budapest Business School, Pázmány Péter Catholic University. His more important publications include two monographies on Husserl (in Hungarian), and he has edited two volumes on Marx and on László Tengelyi (in Hungarian). Season five of our podcast continues with another presentation from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology’ Online. This episode features Pablo Andreu, University of Zaragoza (Spain).   ABSTRACT: George Canguilhem has affirmed that pathology, far from being a state of abnormality, should be considered as another way of life (Canguilhem, 1978, p. 45). According to Canguilhem, being healthy is not the same as being “normal”, what he considers to be an inapplicable concept to biology, but normative, this is, making of a way of life a norm. If accepted, such consideration not only affects what we take to be “pathological”, it also questions what the nature of medical practice is, and what this praxis should be to start. Specifically, if illness is not something that bursts into existence and interrupts it, but rather a new mode of existence properly speaking, then what role, if any, does a patient play in the understanding we have of their illness, and what importance should be attributed to this role during the medical treatment. To this aim, an approach to pathology and medical praxis from a phenomenological point of view seems promising. Martin Heidegger’s notion of care (Sorge) and Paul Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity could explain the existential shift on a patient’s existence. But tracing illness as a continuity rather than an interruption could be problematic, questioning our very understanding of recovery. In other words, to what extent would a phenomenological approach to medical practice entail a methodological and epistemological differentiation between medically treating a patient and healing a person, and, more importantly, would this demarcation be constructive for the patient’s wellbeing to begin with? The task, hence, is double: on the one hand, to state the benefits phenomenology can bring to medicine; on the other, its plausibility. The following article aims to do so by following the personal account of a cancer fighter, evaluating it through the lens of Heidegger’s notion of care and Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity.   BIO: Pablo Andreu is a PhD Student at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. Mainly focused on phenomenology, and specifically the phenomenology of death, Pablo Andreu has also approached analytic philosophy through the Master’s program offered by the University of Barcelona.   This recording is taken from the BSP Annual Conference 2020 Online: 'Engaged Phenomenology'.

In our continuing apocalypse series, Anne Carpenter (St. Mary's College of California) joins Jon to discuss Hans Urs von Balthasar's Theo-Drama IV: The Action and especially the opening sections on the book of Revelation. But first we talk a bit about the new challenge of teaching online in the age of COVID-19. Then Anne gives us an outline of Balthasar's life and the "trilogy" in which his central project consists. Then she explains where Theo-Drama in general and Vol. 4 specifically fit into the scheme of that project. From there, we talk about how the victory of God in Christ initiates the existential conflict at the heart of theo-dramatics. We draw on Blondel and Ricoeur to help try to unpack the character of this conflict and struggle and how it relates the fate of humanism in the 20th century. We have a Patreon! In literature, evil can appear in a broad spectrum of shapes, images and motifs. For Endō Shūsaku, the problem of evil is central to the reality of human existence, and it has to be accepted as such. In Hermeneutics of Evil in the Works of Endō Shūsaku. Between Reading and Writing (Peter Lang, 2016), Justyna Weronika Kasza starts from the assumption that the notion of evil informs many of Shūsaku’s most renowned novels; on the other hand, she argues that Shūsaku’s body of work should be treated and analyzed as a whole, as his essays and critical texts are in fact complementary to his works of fiction. Kasza’s book is, on the one hand, an attempt to trace Shūsaku’s line of thinking and, on the other hand, to apply certain categories of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics to literary studies in order to better understand his body of work. Kasza concludes that evil as a problem was, for Shūsaku, closely intertwined with the Christian faith and with Western culture, which represented for him an “otherness” that manifested itself in multiple forms. The book also includes the first English translation of five of Endō Shūsaku’s critical texts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“Isn’t it funny?” once mused Buck O’Neil, the sage of Negro League baseball. “Everybody remembers going to their first baseball game with their father. They might not remember going to their first day of school, . . . or their first Thanksgiving dinner. But they always remember going to the baseball game with their father.” O’Neil’s observation applies to me (the game was between the Twins and Angels, at Met Stadium in 1977), as it does to Lee Congdon (a game at Wrigley Field in 1948). The starting point of Lee’s book is this understanding of the important place that baseball holds in the memories of its fans. Baseball and Memory: Winning, Losing, and the Remembrance of Things Past (St. Augustine’s Press, 2011) is filled with recollections of wins and losses, of moments comic and tragic, from all eras of baseball history. As Lee explains, these remembered visits to the ballpark or great plays seen on television point to larger questions of the ways that memory shapes us and the ways that we understand larger periods of history. As a scholar of European intellectual history, Congdon takes a somewhat different approach to baseball, and names like Ricoeur, Kundera, and even Nietzsche figure into our conversation. Certainly, this is a baseball book, and Lee revisits many of the well-known and lesser-known moments and characters of baseball history. But it also a more philosophical, personal reflection on how Americans view the nation’s pastime and the nation’s past. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The first e* post of the new academic year is a first in another sense. Previously, all my postings here have been research lectures, about my own work. This post is of a lecture I gave on October 17th, 2006 as part of a Theoretical Philosophy course on the pioneering Consciousness Studies Program at the University of Skövde, Sweden. That is, it is a teaching lecture (that I have been giving for a few years), aimed at third-year undergraduate students on a course primarily on Modern European (read "Continental") Philosophy. As such, it is not primarily my own work. However, given my rather skewed and limited knowledge of this area, proper scholars of this kind of philosophy will probably see more of me in this lecture than they see of the work of Derrida, Foucault, Gadamer, Habermas, Ricoeur, etc.The lecture is almost entirely based on the Introduction chapter of After Philosophy: End or Transformation?, edited by Kenneth Baynes, James Bohman, and Thomas McCarthy, and so they deserve credit for most of the ideas presented. My contributions consist primarily in giving examples, and an extended, perhaps laboured, Bernstein-influenced musicological metaphor, that can be summarized in the slogan: "Kant is the Mahler of Philosophy".This lecture makes poor use of the PodSlide format, going through only 6 slides in 40 minutes. It is actually only the first part of the lecture; part two, which is shorter, will be posted soon.Media:PodSlides: iPod-ready video (.mp4; 67.1 MB; 40 min 17 sec)Audio (.mp3; 9.3 MB; 40 min 12 sec)PowerPoint file (.ppt; 72 KB)
