The fantastic Romanie is the guest artist for Episode 12 of Alt. Down Under. After meeting her in his first week in Australia when she performed alongside Katy J Pearson, Luke finally sits down with the Belgian songwriter to chat through her experiences of moving down to Aus. Romanie explains how stepping out of her comfort zone has shaped her as a person as well as empowering her work as an artist. Making the move has been huge in bringing the best out of Romanie's irresistible talents, with last year's debut album 'Are We There Yet' notching nominations for Australian Music Prize and winning the 2023 Upstart Award. One year on, she opens up on her appetite to get album number two out into the big bad world, off the back of the rollercoaster that was a health scare and misdiagnosis. It's been a one hell of a journey, and here, Romanie bravely opens up on every twist and turn. PLUS - her Dream Gig Venue - how did Romanie end up with gems on her teeth at Coachella and why Bowie needs to come back to life.... A gig review this time out features a look at Confidence Man's fantastically absurd set at The Forum, Melbourne.

LA PETITE MORT: CELEBRATING MIKE NOGAIn these special episodes, we celebrate the life of a person who has died via someone who loved them deeply - keeping the memory of them alive through shared recollections, joy and grief. These conversations can be intensely raw, and many tears are shed. Please move gently as you listen.TW: Substance abuse, mental health, suicide.Mike Noga was a singer/songwriter and former drummer of the alt-rock band The Drones - who won the inaugural Australian Music Prize in 2005 for their album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By. Mike also built a name for himself in the Australian music industry with four critically acclaimed solo albums - Folk Songs (2005), The Balladeer Hunter (2012), KING (2016) and the posthumous Open Fire (2021) which was nominated for the Best Independent Rock Album in the 2022 AIR Awards and one of the best albums of 2022 by NME. He toured extensively both in Australia and overseas during his career, opening for acts such as Spoon, Band of Horses, Mark Lanegan and LOW. Celebrating him with us is his beautiful sister Ali Noga - a ceramic artist based in nipaluna/Hobart. Her work reveals itself as a quest for meaning and connection in a world that often feels disconnected and occasionally, meaningless, and has been strongly influenced by Mike's death and grief. It is also an avenue for self-discovery and transformation as she attempts to explore the depths of human consciousness and the ability (or not) to connect with something greater than ourselves. When not getting muddy Ali prefers the company of dogs over humans, particularly her Chihuahua Pedro.Mike Noga (IG Mike Noga)Ali Noga (IG AliNogaCeramics)Marieke Hardy Is Going To Die is a podcast made by Marieke Hardy (IG @marieke_hardy).You can follow at IG @GoingToDiePodMusic by Lord Fascinator (IG @lordfascinator)Produced by Darren Scarce (IG @Dazz26)Video edits by Andy Nedelkovski (IG @AndyNeds)Artwork by Lauren Egan (IG @heylaurenegan)Photography by Eamon Leggett (IG @anxietyoptions)With thanks to Amelia Chappelow (IG @ameliachappelow)Camilla McKewen (IG @CamillaLucyLucy)and Rhys Graham (IG @RhysJGraham)Support the show via www.patreon.com/mariekehardy and drop an email to mariekehardyisgoingtodie@gmail.comWhilst acknowledging the privilege that comes with having the space to discuss death and mortality, we want to also recognise that discussing these topics can raise some  wounds. Augie March: Live at The Old Museum, Bowen Hills, 17 August 2019 From humble origins in Shepparton, Victoria, the story of Augie March has wound its way through periods of underrated accomplishment, untimely deaths, six albums, national and international tours, award wins and nominations, and the occasional lengthy hiatus. Singer/guitarist Glenn Richards, guitarist Adam Donovan, bass player Edmondo Ammendola and drummer David Williams first came together in 1996 as tertiary students. The band name was taken from the protagonist of a novel by Canadian-American author Saul Bellow. The band's first two EPs, "Thanks for the Memes" (1998) and "Waltz" (1999) were released on Ra Records. For the recording of debut album "Sunset Studies" (2000) Glenn Richards's friend Rob Dawson was brought in to play piano, though he tragically died in a car accident in January 2001. Kiernan Box was brought onboard to play keys for second album "Strange Bird" in 2002 and the lineup has remained stable ever since. Maintaining what might be described as a modest, though devoted fanbase was blown out of the water in 2006 with the release of third album "Moo, You Bloody Choir", which was nominated for ARIA Album of the Year and won the Australian Music Prize. Lead single "One Crowded Hour" took out APRA's Song of the Year and was voted number one in Triple J's Hottest 100. The success of "Moo, You Bloody Choir" led to new opportunities for the band such as North American tours, support slots with acts including Andrew Bird and Crowded House and two special concerts at Kings Park in Perth with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Fourth album "Watch Me Disappear" was released in 2008 and the following year Augie March embarked on stripped-back tour of the east coast dubbed "On The Quiet", with mostly acoustic instruments. Shortly after, the band took a major hiatus, and in 2010 Glenn Richards released a solo album, titled "Glimjack". Since then the band have come back together to record the albums "Havens Dumb" in 2014 and "Bootikins" in 2018. "Bootikins" was produced by longtime Nick Cave collaborator Tony Cohen, who was lured out of retirement to work with the band, although he died before the album was finished. In 2019 Augie March played a 10th anniversary "On The Quiet" tour, stopping in Brisbane to perform to a reverent audience at The Old Museum. While the music may sound beautiful and even sombre, the band were in a jovial mood between songs and we are pleased to have preserved the majority of their banter for the enjoyment of the listener. The Drones: Originally forming in Perth back in 1997 by Gareth Liddiard and his high school friend Rui Pereira, The Drones have accomplished a lot for a band that doesn’t get much airplay on mass media corporate stations. The band rose to prominence in 2005 with their album ‘Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By’, which won them the inaugural Australian Music Prize. Since then, The Drones have had a long career cementing them as Australian icons, playing festivals such as Big Day Out, Laneway Festival, Falls Festival and A Day On The Green, as well as extensive international touring. With 7 albums under their belt, they’ve demonstrated what a band can do when they stick to their guns. Recorded at The Triffid in Brisbane on the 6th of May, 2016. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 26th of March 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Kate Hennessy is a freelance writer and editor. I first read Kate's work in about 2009, when we were both contributors to the Australian music website Mess+Noise, where she was a critic and feature writer whose work I admired greatly from afar, since she was based in Sydney. It wasn't until 2016 that we met for the first time, at the Rock & Roll Writers Festival in Brisbane, where we were both guest speakers. In the intervening years since I first saw her byline, Kate has worked as a music and arts critic for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian Australia and The Quietus, among others, as well as travel writing for a range of Australian and overseas publications. Outside of freelancing, she works in corporate writing and editing, and teaches courses on music journalism and professional business writing. It was the latter skillset that brought Kate to Brisbane in mid-May, and we met at her hotel room so I could ask her a few questions over a bottle of white wine. Our conversation touches on how she learned to make boring things interesting while working for a corporate writing agency; why she decided to become a freelancer as she approached the age of 30, and how it turned out to be a perfect fit for her; why she received hate mail from a musician after writing about his band in The Sydney Morning Herald; why the supply-and-demand in the travel writing business is worse than in music journalism, and why she thinks live music is like sex. Kate Hennessy's music and arts criticism appears in The Guardian, ABC Arts, Fairfax, Australian Book Review, Noisey, Limelight, Mess+Noise and UK magazines The Wire and The Quietus. Kate talks about arts on ABC TV and has spoken at Vivid Ideas, Darwin Writers' Festival, the Rock & Roll Writers' Festival, Bigsound and at live events for Sydney's FBi Radio. Kate is an Australian Music Prize judge, a founding member of feminist collective LISTEN and a teacher of five years at the Australian Writers’ Centre. She developed a masterclass for The Guardian called 'How To Be A Music Journalist', offered in Sydney and Melbourne, and as a festival workshop at Hobart's Dark Mofo festival. Kate's travel journalism has taken her to Africa, Papua New Guinea, Turkey, Solomon Islands, Germany, Peru, Taiwan and remote Indigenous communities in Australia. She has a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing major) from Wollongong University and won a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed a double major in Political Science and History.  Show notes and links to what was discussed in this episode: http://penmanshippodcast.com/episode-30-kate-hennessy/ Kate Hennessy on Twitter: @smallestroom Penmanship on Twitter: @PenmanshipAU penmanshippodcast.com

Tim Levinson is a songwriter and musician. Within the Australian hip-hop scene, he's better known by his stage name, Urthboy, under which he performs as a solo artist and as a member of the eight-piece band The Herd. I've watched and listened to his music closely for more than a decade, and I've interviewed Tim several times, including for my book Talking Smack. When he visited Brisbane on a Saturday in early June while touring for his latest album, The Past Beats Inside Me Like A Second Heartbeat, I met at his hotel room during the afternoon, where his band and manager were relaxing soon after arriving from a show on the Sunshine Coast the previous night. Our conversation touches on how his songwriting style has changed over the years to reflect a broader range of perspectives and emotions; the handful of times in his career where he has felt like he's truly nailed a song's execution; the members of the inner circle of people who he feels comfortable showing early drafts of his work to; why he decided to write a song about his mother for his newest album, and his father for his last album; and the creative breakthroughs that can emerge while writing lyrics alone at 3.00am. Tim Levinson, otherwise known as Urthboy, is an award-winning Australian hip-hop artist based in Sydney. His second solo album The Signal was hailed as ‘a classic’ by Rolling Stone, received numerous award nominations and was shortlisted in the 2007 Australian Music Prize. He is one of the main songwriters in eight-piece band The Herd, and also manages Elefant Traks, an independent record label which includes artists such as Hermitude and Horrorshow. Celebrating the government’s apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008, Urthboy worked with GetUp to re-imagine the song 'From Little Things Big Things Grow', at Paul Kelly’s personal request. The song helped raise over $100,000 for Indigenous run health and education programs. Urthboy has released five solo albums, the most recent of which is 2016's The Past Beats Inside Me Like A Second Heartbeat. Show notes and links to what was discussed in this episode: http://penmanshippodcast.com/episode-28-tim-levinson-urthboy/ Tim Levinson on Twitter: @Urthboy Penmanship on Twitter: @PenmanshipAU penmanshippodcast.com

Courtney Barnett: In the past 5 years, Courtney has gone from starting a humble little record label with money borrowed from her Grandmother to release her recordings, to international award-winning acclaim, all whilst keeping a level head and staying independent. Releasing two EP’s in 2012 and 2013 and re-releasing them on Vinyl as ‘The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas’ through her Milk! Records imprint, she started gaining the attention of respected publications such as Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum and Q Magazine with her song ‘Avant Gardner’. Jess Ribeiro: Jess Ribeiro’s career started as a three piece, featuring her long term collaborator Rob Law in the group Jess Ribeiro and the Bone Collectors in the very under represented city of Darwin. Their debut album My Little River won best country album at the 2013 AIR independent label awards. After an amicable creative split with Rob Law, Jess began working on her first solo record with legendary Australian musician, composer, songwriter, arranger Mick Harvey. Her album ‘Kill It Yourself’ was released in august 2015. Recorded live at PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 3rd of February 2016. Recorded & Mixed by Paul Maybury & Alicia Saye WAAX: Starting in 2013, WAAX have been pushing everyone out of their way with their raw, punk infused brand of rock. They have rapidly become an act that’s known for their high energy live shows that is partly due to the fear installed by their utterly terrifying and frenzied frontwoman Marie DeVita. In 2015 they released their debut EP Holy Sick and followed it up with an east coast tour that had everyone talking. Recorded live at The Elephant in Brisbane on the 25th of January, 2016. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic Caitlin Park: Caitlin Park writes and performs folktronica, taking folk and electro-acoustics to new heights with her abstract composition, sampling and film nostalgia. Releasing her debut album in 2011, MILK ANNUAL is a sprawling, intricate and heart-warming foray into the soundscapes of old films, audio books, spoken word, and minimalistic musical arrangement. For much of 2012, Caitlin travelled to New York and London, and collected sounds which would appear on her critically lauded 2nd album, 2013’s The Sleeper, which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. BigStrongBrute: First up, we have a band with an incredibly huge name, but an incredibly svelte physical figure. The group we’re talking about is BigStrongBrute, the moniker adopted by sole songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Donoughue. Starting out as a solo outlet, has morphed into a multi-headed live show, at times as many as 8 people strong creating a wall of folk melody. His 2010 EP release ‘We Can Sleep Under Trees In The Morning’ got many ears paying attention. Bigstrongbrute’s debut album, 2012’s ‘Avalanche Of Truth’, really got people excited, as it displayed the many different flavours of this talented individual.
