She became the first female doctor at the historic Bethlem Hospital and one of the four medical officers appointed at the opening of the Maudsley Hospital.Despite her groundbreaking achievements Barkas faced immense challenges, from entrenched prejudice in her professional field to personal disillusionment. Dr Kaplan examines her profound contributions to psychiatry, her struggles with the limitations placed on women in medicine and the mysterious turn her life took when she returned to New Zealand, never to practice again. Dr Robert M. Kaplan, MBChB FRANZCP MA MPhil, is a forensic psychiatrist, lecturer and speaker with positions at the University of New South Wales, Western Sydney University and Wollongong University. It is uncomfortable by nature. If it's not uncomfortable, then check again – is anything actually changing, or are we just re-arranging the deck chairs? The higher the stakes, the greater the risks that need taking. As leaders, we must take risks. We must find a way to quieten the voice of fear and doubt and back ourselves against the inevitable barrage of resistance."Meanwhile Protesters have gone back to the Styx Valley to  peacefully interrupt logging.“While fellow forest defender Ali Alishah is in jail today, we are defending these forests from destruction. The fact that peaceful protesters are being gaoled and face severe penalties for standing up against this destruction will not deter us. It is the native forest logging that is criminal in a climate emergency and extinction crisis,” said Dr Lisa Searle, Campaign Organiser with BBF.“This logging of ancient forests in southern Tasmania is absolutely disgraceful. The government should be ashamed for sanctioning this devastation. We will continue to take action and defend these precious forests until we see a commitment from our leaders to end native forest logging. There is an opportunity right now for Tasmanian voters to make a choice: vote for protecting forests and wildlife or more logging destruction,” she said.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-04/tasmania-expands-native-logging-areas/102552280

This week, records were broken in the UK when the temperature soared into the high 30's and even surpassed 40 degrees celsius in some areas for the first time ever, causing chaos for ambulance services and fire crews who battled widespread heat exhaustion and wildfires. Despite the threat to human life and property, many Aussies were scoffing at the British for not being able to handle a couple of days of temperatures that we deal with every summer, but is that really fair given their country is not designed to cope with extreme heat? The Quicky speaks to a climate expert to find out why even just a couple of days of 40+ degrees caused such devastation in Britain, and what could happen if heatwaves such as this become increasingly common in Europe. In his research he spans a unique arc from matters of ecologic crisis and social vulnerability to creative practices and industries, particularly music. Having focused on other iconic objects such as surfboards and cowboy boots in the past, in his latest book “Following Guitars from Factory to Forest” (forthcoming in the University of Chicago Press) he and his co-author Andrew Warren tell the story, how the loss of old-growth forests around the Earth threatens the supply of timber to guitar-makers, and how they in turn engage in alternative forms of forestry and timber sourcing to secure their supply. These kinds of small-scale experiments and innovations in resource management, Chris is convinced, are the way forward in a world threatened by climate change and mass extinction. Scott grew up suffering my from depression, low self esteem and insecurity after his parents divorced when he was 6. He felt inferior to the other kids whose parents were still together, and always compared himself to others finding any reason to make another person better than him.   He didn't know how to make himself feel good and felt as if he didn't have positive role models in his life.    In high school and university he suffered from anxiety, stress and pressure. In particular social anxiety where he was constantly feeling shy, awkward, uncomfortable, unconfident, and fearing rejection.    After completing his degree in Exercise Science at Wollongong University, he found himself emotionally trapped in running his first gym. Not knowing how to get out or find genuine help he ended up with severe depression as the business didn't work out how he imagined it would.    He lacked emotional intelligence, business skills, communication skills and basic life skills. From there he started his journey to find help. Psychologist/ psychiatrists/ life coaches/ nlp practitioners/ reiki coaches , you name it no one could get him emotionally get him to where he wanted to be, and this led him to feeling frustrated, helpless and hopeless.   From there he started partying a lot. He would party for days. It was the only way he knew how to feel confident, happy and relaxed. But, he paid the price dealing with the come downs and numbing himself to life.   He then attempted to work and train all week at his gym. Needless to say, he suffered, his business suffered, his clients suffered, and eventually he ended up leaving the lot as his ego had the better of him and his addictions took over his life.   He moved interstate and then overseas, only having to be flown home not long after by his family after being rushed to hospital in an ambulance suffering severe panic attacks. He was emotionally more out of control than ever.    After returning home to Australia he decided he needed help. He was in and out hospitals seeing more doctors/psychs/counsellors no one could help him. He was lost.      He was now at a point in his life where he had to face up to facts.  He had an unresolved court case in Victoria where he flew down on his own accord to hand himself in and have his court date re set, only to be arrested and jailed for 18 months for drugs charges. He had finally hit his rock bottom.    He felt incredible amounts of guilt for what he had put his family and friends through over the past 5 years.    He was scared, intimidated and fearful for his life, not knowing what to expect. It was the first time in his life, he was all alone. He had to think for himself to survive.    At this point he realised he didn't know how his mind worked, he didn't know who he was or what his purpose in life was meant to be.   At this point he found a spiritual teacher in there. She teaches small business courses but teaches more about life and life skills to those who would listen.   His way of thinking had led him to that place, he didn't want to be there, and he didn't want to go back, so he listened and implemented everything she taught him. She helped him realise that there is no difference between being in jail emotionally and being in jail in reality. If he wanted to free him himself of jail he needed to learn how to do it emotionally first.    At this point Scott created a method that he uses today, that switches off and releases negative emotions out your body. He was amazed how powerful it was and how quickly it worked.    He showed his teacher the method, it worked for her too! She said Scotty your onto something very powerful here you need to get it out there and help people with this, the world we live in needs a lot of healing and more healers like you.    So from that day Scott realised his life's purpose is to get his method out there and help people.    Scott has been out for 4 years now. In that time he has set up a business and helped many people with mental health and emotional issues, relationship issues, performance coaching for athletes, body and wellbeing transformations, the lot!   Scott has a degree in Exercise Science, cert 3 & 4 in Fitness and Personal Training, is a qualified reiki practitioner and has his cert 4 in Training & Assessment.    Scott has helped emotionally transform the lives of hundreds of people in The Sutherland Shire, and Australia wide, in his 1 on 1 private consultations, workshops, seminars and retreats.    He has been a presenter at Seminars & Workshops on his area of expertise for the following:   -Men's Mental Health & Wellbeing at Orana Hub Coastal Caringbah in 2015  -Cyber Bullying at Concord Library 2015 -Mental Health & Wellbeing Workshop at Tradies Gymea in The Sutherland Shire 2016 -CPC Psychic Expo at WIN Stadium in Wollongong 2016  -Psychic Expo at Sutherland Serviceman's Club 2016    Scott believes in leading by example because actions speak louder than words. He says to have credibility in the eye of another, you must possess the qualities that those who follow want for themselves. He follows this by stating if a teacher does their job properly, the student will overtake the teacher and take the learnings to the next level.    Scott's goals that he has achieved since hitting rock bottom in jail are inspiring. He symbolises motivation, inspiration, overcoming adversity and leadership.    You can connect with Scott at https://www.facebook.com/scottperformancecoaching/

Kylie Edwards - Living Without Hate In Your Heart

Abused from the age of two and left homeless at the age of 14, Kylie Edwards had moved house more times than she had had birthdays and lived with 15 different families before she was 23. In the years since, Kylie emigrated to a foreign country for five years (and visited over 20 more), lived a monastic life in Nepal, and experienced poverty at 40 while re-educating herself, proving to her that everyone had a story and that everyone had a different way of looking at the world. As a young woman on her journey to seek some kind of normality, Kylie’s life was based on one decision: To figure out how to live without hate in her heart. Little did she know that the journey of liberating herself from the past would lead her to extraordinary heights of inner happiness. While Kylie has always said that being happy is a choice, nobody has ever accepted this simple explanation. She believes it is finding your own true self and being true to your daily decisions that pave the way to happiness. But most people think they are bound by commitments, responsibilities and social norms, however social norms are incredibly fluid under the influence of multiculturalism and boundaries are always being pushed. With mental health illnesses affecting more than half of the western population, it is becoming increasingly more urgent to help people through times of change and adversity by helping them explore the wonder of curiosity and joy. Kylie is the author of Why Surviving is Not Enough: How to Reinvent Yourself by Embracing Change. Her intrigue (more like an obsession really) of human behaviour finally led her to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (with a focus on gender) at Wollongong University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, completing her internship at the mental health ward at Mosman Private Hospital. Kate Hennessy is a freelance writer and editor. I first read Kate's work in about 2009, when we were both contributors to the Australian music website Mess+Noise, where she was a critic and feature writer whose work I admired greatly from afar, since she was based in Sydney. It wasn't until 2016 that we met for the first time, at the Rock & Roll Writers Festival in Brisbane, where we were both guest speakers. In the intervening years since I first saw her byline, Kate has worked as a music and arts critic for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian Australia and The Quietus, among others, as well as travel writing for a range of Australian and overseas publications. Outside of freelancing, she works in corporate writing and editing, and teaches courses on music journalism and professional business writing. It was the latter skillset that brought Kate to Brisbane in mid-May, and we met at her hotel room so I could ask her a few questions over a bottle of white wine. Our conversation touches on how she learned to make boring things interesting while working for a corporate writing agency; why she decided to become a freelancer as she approached the age of 30, and how it turned out to be a perfect fit for her; why she received hate mail from a musician after writing about his band in The Sydney Morning Herald; why the supply-and-demand in the travel writing business is worse than in music journalism, and why she thinks live music is like sex. Kate Hennessy's music and arts criticism appears in The Guardian, ABC Arts, Fairfax, Australian Book Review, Noisey, Limelight, Mess+Noise and UK magazines The Wire and The Quietus. Kate talks about arts on ABC TV and has spoken at Vivid Ideas, Darwin Writers' Festival, the Rock & Roll Writers' Festival, Bigsound and at live events for Sydney's FBi Radio. Kate is an Australian Music Prize judge, a founding member of feminist collective LISTEN and a teacher of five years at the Australian Writers’ Centre. She developed a masterclass for The Guardian called 'How To Be A Music Journalist', offered in Sydney and Melbourne, and as a festival workshop at Hobart's Dark Mofo festival. Kate's travel journalism has taken her to Africa, Papua New Guinea, Turkey, Solomon Islands, Germany, Peru, Taiwan and remote Indigenous communities in Australia. She has a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing major) from Wollongong University and won a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed a double major in Political Science and History.  Show notes and links to what was discussed in this episode: http://penmanshippodcast.com/episode-30-kate-hennessy/ Kate Hennessy on Twitter: @smallestroom Penmanship on Twitter: @PenmanshipAU penmanshippodcast.com
