This week we have a slightly different conversation as we meet Tim Maxwell and Alastair Gillespie from the Lord Howe Island Brewery. The brewery was announced in 2020, when I spoke with then Lion Managing Director James Brindley who, together with Chuck Hahn, told how Lion was working with the Maxwell family to build a brewery on the island. That caused a bit of a kerfuffle on the Island, as many locals - including the competing Lord Howe Island Brewing Company - were unaware of Lion's involvement. It turned out that due to their enthusiasm for the project, I probably put too much emphasis on Lion's involvement in the project. In any event, with the brewery now open Lion's changing strategy, which has seen it close or rebrand its smaller craft breweries, leaves the multinational's involvement in the brewery uncertain…despite that, there is now a brewery on Lord Howe Island and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to visit it. I recorded this interview with Tim and Alastair on the island and in it we hear the background to how Lion was involved and where that stands now. More importantly, we talk about the very unique challenges of building a brewery on a very small, world heritage listed island as part of a very small and tight knit community. It's an interesting conversation that is as much about sustainability and community as it is about beer, and I hope you enjoy it. This episode of Beer is a Conversation is presented by HPA. Australia's leading hop grower offers a huge range of Aussie, international and innovative hop products that can help breweries of all sizes become more efficient, more sustainable, and more profitable. Craig Selak and Tim Maxwell sit down with me to discuss LOSER 'All The Rage', being authentic as an artist, ASMR and dropping two albums during a pandemic. In 2018, a new Melbourne band arrived featuring ex-members of The Smith Street Band, The Bennies and Apart From This. With the self-deprecating name of LOSER, they hit the ground running with their debut single immediately added to triple j. Signed to Domestic La La, the label of Violent Soho's James Tidswell, a debut album from LOSER at the start of 2020 signalled a busy year ahead. Those plans soon disappeared, and in lockdown for much of the year, singer Tim Maxwell started to experience severe anxiety. With medication and some family help, the band ended up channelling their frustrations into building their own studio and writing a second album. All The Rage is the result, a consistent rock record that feeds off the riffs of Queens Of The Stone Age, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins and other seminal ‘90s and early noughties acts. Tim speaks here with Richard Kingsmill about what he went through last year, how he and his brother Will returned to their original family home to build the studio, and how aliens inspired one of the album's best moments.
Tim Maxwell (Loser) is my guest for this episode of the podcast, talking about the amazing 'Cowboys From Hell' by Pantera, one of my favourite albums of all time and a classic set of riffs to discuss. We also talk about the new Loser album, 'All The Rage' available on September 10 through Domestic La La Records. Rip in! Check out Loser and 'All The Rage' here: https://www.bandcalledloser.com/ Thanks to RODE Mics.

This is a slightly controversial subject, so we're going to lean into it with Dr Tim Maxwell. It's no secret that there are some specialist orthodontists who are against general dentists performing ortho. One of the reasons is that there is too vast a difference between the depth of education an orthodontist receives versus what's available for general dentists to start immediately practicing ortho. For a GP dentist wanting to learn ortho, not having the full support of the specialists doesn't provide much confidence in what's already a daunting educational pursuit. Not only that, there are strongly held and contentious opinions out there when it comes to different aspects of ortho: extraction vs non extraction, fixed vs clear aligners, age of intervention, degrees of airway involvement and more, further adding to the confusion. Dr Tim Maxwell shares how he learned the importance of gaining both breadth and depth in navigating the world of orthodontic education for GPs. He talks about how to critically evaluate various education providers to gain a balanced perspective on the landscape and practice ortho competently and safely. Dr Tim Maxwell is a pretty BAD dentist. That is, he practices bio-mimetic, aesthetic dentistry. It's a concept that's fast taking over long-standing, traditional approaches to restorative dentistry. Advances in modern adhesive dentistry has allowed for substantially more conservative, additive and long-lasting restorative options for our patients. More importantly, it's highlighted just how reductive, destructive and unnecessary many of those past practices were, and still are. Dr Tim Maxwell is one of the leading dentists that challenges those methods, most of which are still taught at universities today. In this podcast, he explains to us the key principles behind biomimetic aesthetic/adhesive dentistry and the advantages it offers both patients and the longevity of their teeth. He walks us through the practical aspects of biomimetic prep design, adhesion, immediate dentine sealing so you can start practicing BAD dentistry tomorrow. Med students in the 2021 Match can enter to be one of five students who will win $500! Enter at panaceafinancial.com/matchday. Long time SCP listener and CCOM M4 Austin Kazarian joins us on the show to talk about the personal finance course he proposed and helped create. Wait, isn't there enough to learn in medicine? There is, but as long as med school debt is a problem, it's important to learn how to deal with it, as well as many other financial issues that exist for new residents. Join him, MD/MBA student Gabe Conley, and M4s Joyce Wahba and Tim Maxwell for a discussion on how medical students can fix the inevitable gaps in their schools' curricula, and why it's important to look for a joint that'll take your suggestions and let you lead with them (and see this article, and the Academic Medicine commentary discussed during the show). And if you want to bring Austin's personal finance for physicians curriculum to your school, he'll share his proposal with you to get started–drop him a DM @AustinKazarian.
