Den Schluss- und Höhepunkt setzte nicht das lahme Finale zwischen Spanien und Argentinien. Das beste Spiel von 104 Begegnungen war der Kampf um Bronze. Das 6:4 Englands über Frankreich war der Leckerbissen schlechthin. Jetzt ist sie vorbei – die Zeit der langen Nächte und der Skandale. Spanien – neben Frankreich lange das Maß aller Dinge in Europa – brauchte lange, um gegen eindeutig unterlegene Argentinier in der Verlängerung das 1:0 zu machen. So blieb uns ein Elfmeterschießen erspart und wir konnten gegen Mitternacht deutscher Zeit ins Bett gehen, um uns für die erste Post-WM Woche fit zu schlafen. Einen Grund, sich mit Tempranillo zu betrinken gab es nicht. Der aufgeblähte Kader von 48 Mannschaften war ein Gewinn. Man sah tolle Spiele der angeblich kleinen Fußballnationen. Überraschungen aus Afrika, Asien und Südamerika. Dieses neue Reglement hat sich auf Anhieb in die Herzen der Fans gespielt. Trotz horrender Preise waren die Stadien nicht halb leer, wie im Vorfeld befürchtet. Und die Stimmung vor Ort blieb auch nach dem Ausscheiden der gastgebenden Nationen Canada, Mexiko und USA hoch. Schade bleibt natürlich, dass der normale Fußballfan auf dem Globus keine Chance hatte, live dabei zu sein. Die WM 2026 konnte sich nur leisten, wer über ein prall gefülltes Bankkonto verfügte. Eine WM der Reichen und Superreichen. Auch zuhause – ohne Bezahlfernsehen konnte man nur wenige Spiele auf der Couch verfolgen. Womit wir bei den Schattenseiten dieses Fußballfestes wären. Es war eine WM des Kommerz-Rausches. 15 Milliarden Dollar verdiente die FIFA in diesen drei Wochen. 5,8 Milliarden waren es vor vier Jahren in Katar. Trinkpausen dienten nicht etwa der Gesundheit der Spieler, sondern lediglich der Gesundheit der Konzerne, die in diesen Minuten ihre Werbe-Maschinen anschmissen. Trauriger Höhepunkt: Die peinliche Halbzeit-Show in New Jersey, die auf knapp 30 Minuten ausgedehnt wurde, komplett schwache Auftritte von Madonna, Justin Biber und Rihanna boten und die der Gesundheit der Spieler nach Ansicht aller Sportmediziner abträglich war. Der Kamera-Schwenk in die VIP-Lounge in dem zu sehen war, wie ein lachender Infantino einem lachenden Trump eine Weltpokal-Nachbildung in den Schoss legte, war das sprechende Bild dieser WM. Sie war gekauft worden von zwei größenwahnsinnigen Kaspern, die von Fußball keine Ahnung haben. Umso mehr dafür von Deals, die so weit gingen, dass Trump Infantino nötigte, eine rote Karte gegen die USA zurückzunehmen. Ein unverzeihlicher Regelverstoß, den Infantino hoffentlich nicht überleben wird. Bleibt die deutsche Bilanz. Nach dem Turnier ist die einstige Großmacht mit vier Sternen auf der Brust auf Rang 12 der Weltrangliste abgestürzt. Vier Sterne hat nur noch Italien, das beim Weltturnier zum dritten Mal in Folge gar nicht dabei war. Und Brasilien, mit 5 Sternen Spitzenreiter, scheiterte ebenso kläglich wie unsere Jungs. Fakt ist: Es ist weder Hansi Flick noch Julian Nagelsmann gelungen, aus sehr guten Einzelspielern eine Mannschaft zu formen. Dass jetzt Jürgen Klopp, ein Vertreter des Geldes und nicht des Fußballs, die Sache bis zur EM 2028 in England, Schottland, Wales, Irland und Nordirland richten soll, kann mit Fug und Recht angezweifelt werden. In fünf Ländern, die aus der europäischen Union ausgetreten sind, findet immerhin ein Tournier der kurzen Wege statt. Man bleibt auf der Insel außerhalb des europäischen Festlandes. Mit einem doppelten Titelverteidiger Spanien, die als Europa- und Weltmeister anreisen. Mit einem Blendax-Lächler Klopp, der als Werbeikone und Umsatzmillionär im zweifachen Millionenbereich sehr viel mehr Schlagzeilen macht wie als Fußballehrer. Die Kommerzshow geht also weiter. Empfangen wurde die DFB-Delegation sehr passend mit einer Hausdurchsuchung in der Zentrale. Beendet ist die Weltmeisterschaft damit aber noch nicht. Nach wie vor diskutiert das Fußball-Land über die Begleiterscheinungen des Scheiterns im Sechzehntelfinale. Für die neue und wie immer von der Sparkasse Nürnberg präsentierte Podcast-Folge übernehmen das Sebastian Böhm, Flo Zenger und Fadi Keblawi. Sind wirklich die Frauen schuld am Ausscheiden der Männer. Warum kann sich Julian Nagelsmann plötzlich nicht mehr gut selbst verkaufen in der Öffentlichkeit und sollten all die Ehemaligen vielleicht einfach nur den Mund halten? So viele Fragen und noch mehr Antworten. Wen braucht die Nationalmannschaft, wenn Nagelsmann wirklich entlassen beziehungsweise abgefunden wird? Pep Guardiola könnte helfen. Oder natürlich Jürgen Klopp. Aber wäre das hilfreich? Vielleicht braucht es eine ganz einfache Lösung, mit der es wirklich nur noch um Fußball geht. Und wer wird jetzt eigentlich Weltmeister? Frankreich? Klingt logisch. Der Podcast arbeitet aber auch die Schwächen der bislang überragenden Turniermannschaft heraus. England? Wäre beinahe gegen Doktor Kongo rausgeflogen. Es bleibt kompliziert und wunderschön. Dieses Turnier lohnt sich auch dann bis an sein Ende irgendwann im Spätherbst, selbst wenn Senegal und Marokko nicht mehr aufeinandertreffen können. Eine freundliche Nebenrolle spielt natürlich auch der 1. FC Nürnberg.

Es braucht wenige Worte, um zu benennen, was Fußball-Deutschland bei dieser WM erlebt hat. Es ist eine Katastrophe. Die nächste Blamage. Zweimal war es zuvor die Vorrunde, 2026 zwar mal wieder der Einzug in ein K.-o.-Spiel. Aber: Es war das neu eingeführte Sechzehntelfinale - unter die besten 16 Mannschaften hat es die DFB-Elf wieder nicht geschafft. „Alle drei Turniere waren auf ihre Art und Weise schlimm“, sagt Almuth. Roman geht aber sogar einen Schritt weiter: „Ich finde, dieses Ausscheiden ist noch schlimmer als 2022 und 2018.“ Almuth sagt zumindest, dass „der Trainer“, also Julian Nagelsmann, „sehr unsouverän reagiert hat“, nachdem seine Kommunikation in den Monaten vor dem Turnier ohnehin mehrfach kritisiert worden war. „Das stört mich und ist schlimmer als bei den anderen beiden Weltmeisterschaften“, betont sie.
