More than a beloved Broadway musical, it is a profound meditation on family, faith, exile, resilience, identity, love, and the fragile balancing act between tradition and change. Episode #240: Reb Peretz's Mysterious Dream

Tomer Peretz is an Israeli - American artist whose work has been deeply shaped by lived experience of conflict and trauma. Following the events of October 7, he volunteered with ZAKA which included unfathomable tasks such as entering homes where scenes of profound devastation had taken place. In the wake of that experience, Peretz turned to art not only as personal processing, but as a form of response and reconstruction which helped him reach what he calls ‘PTG' - post traumatic growth. He went on to establish the LA - based “8 Project” an initiative that uses art residencies and workshops to support trauma survivors, offering creative expression as a pathway through grief, memory and psychological recovery. His work now sits at the intersection of art, trauma and healing, exploring how image - making can hold what language often cannot.

We Jews are obsessed with telling stories – as the core of the Passover Seder and beyond.  The obsession to do so is woven into the fabric of Jewish life and practice.  Through interpreting our people's narrative, we become the story we tell about ourselves and we partner with God in completing creation.

A Lecture Series by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Lecture 6: Delivered February 5, 1959 Continuing with the idea of Judaism's glorification of the anonymous person, the Talmud says that the participants in the annual “kallah” Torah lectures receive divine reward not according to their intellectual achievements, but according to the amount of discomfort they put themselves through in order to participate. Thus, the diligent ignoramus could receive more reward than the accomplished scholar. Judaism stresses axiological democracy, the equal worth of the great scholar and the little person. Modern Man has yet to live up to this ideal of axiological democracy, and the biggest challenge of today's State of Israel is to live up to this ideal. The Talmud captures this axiological democracy in its dictum, “How do you know that your blood is redder than the blood of your neighbor?” Although Judaism's moral code recognizes the common right to dignity, such that we may not judge or embarrass anyone, it places special emphasis on the dignity on the humble and lowly person, with special injunctions against harming the deaf, blind, orphan, widow, and stranger. Rabban Gamliel the Prince, under the order of execution by the Romans, considered that perhaps he deserved his fate due to once making a widow feel unimportant. This sense of tenderness towards the downtrodden reflects God's own behavior and attitude towards the poor and oppressed, as described in Scripture. Peretz's story “Bontzye Shweig” illustrates this idea as well. This analysis leads to the problem of Jewish loneliness, which requires distinguishing between two different feelings, loneliness and aloneness. Loneliness comes from others inevitably rejecting one's message, one's kerygma. Aloneness comes from the numinous uniqueness inherent in each person. Loneliness brings with it destructive emotions, whereas aloneness is a creative and motivating force. Every person must suffer the loneliness of rejection at some point in life. Next lecture will discuss how Judaism tries to solve the problem of loneliness. My guest on the show today is Ash Carter, writer and editor for Air Mail magazine and all around chronicler of the post-war cultural elite. I asked Ash to come on after reading the most recent in a series of profiles he's written about great editors of the 20th century, some of whom, for reasons we discuss, were semi-cancelled in the last decade or two. He's written about, for instance, former New Republic editor and owner Marty Peretz, Peretz's longtime literary editor Leon Wieseltier, Vintage Classics legend Gary Fisketjon, New York Review Classics visionary Edwin Frank, and Dick and Jeanette Seaver of Arcade Publishing.It's a fun conversation that hits on a few of my abiding concerns: the legacy of the WASP elite on our culture and politics, the ways in which we should think about people who do bad things but have made great things, and graphic design, which Ash cares about more than the average magazine editor.I lead off the episode by saying something, perhaps against my better judgement, about Jeffrey Epstein (or Jeff Epstein, as we started calling him in my family for some reason).Here's what I say. I am genuinely befuddled.I was listening to Jay Kang and Tyler Austin Harper's podcast, Time to Say Goodbye, and they weren't full conspiracy on Epstein, but I'd say 70% conspiracy.Here's Harper, for instance, on a recent episode:it does appear to be true that …. There is an international network of very powerful pedophiles that have a not inconsiderable amount of leverage on various halls of power. It shouldn't be lost. We've said this on the show before, but two out of the last four presidents were people who were very friendly with Epstein. But I think the real story here is that, yes, you have this hard kernel of like true blue elite pedophilesAnd then on the other side of things I was reading some posts by Michael Tracey and Matt Taibbi, and their perspective seems to be that Epstein was basically an immensely sleazy guy who paid for sex with young women and didn't look too closely at whether they were over or under 18 but didn't necessarily have a particular desire to have sex with underage women. Their paradigm is that a lot of this is Russiagate style hysteria/moral panic, fueled both by conspiracy theorists of all stripes and by various political and media actors who are cynically pumping up the story to drive clicks and gain electoral advantage,Claude AI comes in somewhere in the middle, telling me that “the evidence strongly supports that Epstein … Epstein deliberately and systematically sought out minors. The infrastructure he built—the recruitment network, the payments, the documentation—wasn't consistent with someone who simply preferred young-looking women and occasionally made mistakes. It was consistent with someone whose preference was specifically for adolescent girls.”It also says that when it comes to the question of other men being involved, it's murky: “The names that circulate publicly—Clinton, Trump, Dershowitz, various billionaires—appear in flight logs or visitor records, but presence at Epstein's properties doesn't establish participation in abuse. Epstein cultivated legitimacy by surrounding himself with prominent people, many of whom may have had no idea what else was happening.”I say all this not to offer my own two cents but just to articulate the opposite, which is that I have no clue. The evidence is too vast, and my time too limited, to feel as though I can have a direct interpretation of the evidence, and many of the people to whom I typically turn for a relatively sober account of reality, against conspiracy theory, or moderately conspiratorial. And then the people like Tracey and Taibbi complicate things too, because although their extreme skepticism of official narratives is so often distortionary, and therefore not a good guide to what's actually going on, in some cases it can provide a very useful signal for when we should be skeptical of official narratives,They were more right than wrong about Russiagate, or at least right about certain things that most people got wrong. So is this Russiagate all over again, and if so, what the hell does that mean, because as I ponder the comparison I realize I still don't even know what to make of Russiagate?I don't know. It was always the case that the gatekeepers were wrong about some big things, but it used to be the case that we just swallowed their narratives anyway, because we weren't exposed to alternatives. Now we're living in this fractured informational environment where we're so much more acutely aware of the fragility of the conventional narratives, and so much more exposed to alternatives, but our brains haven't gotten bigger in proportion in order to sift through the data more efficiently and effectively.I spend a lot of time thinking and reading about these things, and have a lot of faith in my capacity to perceive what's going on most of the time with some accuracy, but here I'm just adrift, and I wonder if in my adriftness I'm experiencing firsthand something like what most people who don't think, read, and write about this stuff as much as I do experience when confronting the political world, and what role this plays in pushing them into self contained bubbles or tribes that replicate, in a way, the single narrative cognitive environment we all had back in the days of the gatekeepers. So there's still a conventional narrative that we have to protect us from too much cognitive dizziness, it's just that there are many of them at once.Anyway, that's my two cents on Epstein. I'll keep trying to get a handle on it, but I won't have any guests on to talk about it because who needs another podcast about the Epstein files.Hope you enjoy my conversation with Ash.Peace. The Torah in Parashat Vaera traces the lineage of Moshe Rabbenu, informing us that he was son of Amram and Yochebed. Amram was a grandson of Yakaob Abinu's third son, Levi – specifically, he was the son of Levi's son, Kehat. Astonishingly, the Torah relates, Yochebed was Amram's aunt – she was the daughter of Levi, the sister of Kehat. The commentaries explain that Yochebed and Kehat had different mothers, and thus they were half-siblings. As such, the marriage between Amram and Yochebed was not forbidden by the Noachide laws, which apply to all mankind. These laws forbid marrying one's parent's full sister, but not a parent's half-sister. This union would, however, be proscribed by the Torah given to Beneh Yisrael. It turns out, then, that Moshe – the greatest leader and prophet in our nation's history, who brought us the Torah – was the product of a marriage that Torah law forbids. Moshe is not the only great leader with less-than-pristine origins. The Davidic line, which began with David and Shlomo and will – we pray very soon – culminate with Mashiah, also has its origins in problematic relationships. David descended from Peretz – the product of the relationship between Yehuda and his daughter-in-law, Tamar. David's great-grandmother was Rut, a convert from the nation of Moab, and although it was ultimately concluded that this marriage was permissible, there was considerable controversy as to whether a man may marry a woman from Moab. And the founder of the nation of Moab, Rut's ancestor, was conceived when Lot's daughter gave her father wine and had a relationship with him, thinking they this was needed in order to maintain the earth's population. Rav Menahem Recanti (Italy, 1223-1290) offers an explanation for this phenomenon, for why the great leaders emerged from less-than-ideal origins. The Satan, he writes, is always seeking to sabotage the rise of these righteous figures, to block these holy souls from descending into the world. Moshe brought us the Torah, which is the "antidote" to the Yeser Ha'ra (evil inclination), the greatest weapon we have in our struggle to overcome the Satan's efforts to lure us away from the service of G-d. And the Gemara teaches that when Mashiah arrives, he will destroy the Satan so it could no longer hurt the Jewish People. Therefore, the Satan will do everything in its power to obstruct the transmission of Torah, and to prevent the arrival of Mashiah. For this reason, Hashem arranged that Moshe and David would be produced from unions that the Satan would never bother to disrupt. The Satan welcomes problematic relationships such as those of Lot and his daughters, Yehuda and Tamar, and Amram and Yochebed. He would never try to interfere with them, because this is precisely what he wants – relationships that are from the Torah's ideal marriage. Moshe and David needed to be produced this way for the purpose of avoiding the Satan's interference. This reminds us never to be discouraged by the challenges that we face in the pursuit of greatness. Whenever we try to achieve something significant, we are going to confront obstacles. Whether it's in the process of finding a spouse and raising a family, the process of learning Torah and spiritual growth, starting a new organization or project – the Satan is always going to try to interfere. Rather than be surprised and discouraged by the problems that arise, we should expect them, stay strong, and proceed with confidence, trusting that Hashem is always helping us in our efforts to defeat the Satan and achieve to the very best of our ability.

In fact, a 2004 CDC study found over 92% of Americans had detectable levels of Bisphenol A (BPA) in their urine. Today's topic is BPA.BPA is everywhere: receipts, water bottles, canned foods, baby bottles, and even our dental fillings. It's one of the most ubiquitous endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which interferes with the body's hormone systems. That's why today's episode is about making the invisible visible. Our goals for today's podcast:Break down what BPA isShow how it affects the human bodyExplain how you and your patients can limit exposureEmpower both clinicians and the public with real, practical informationArreaza: Thanks for clarifying BPA today. It seems like we always have to learn about a new carcinogen or toxic substance that we are exposed to. I remember when I was a child, Yellow #5 became very concerning for the general public but it is still being used in our foods. So, it's good you are talking about this. What Is BPA?Cam: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used since the 1950s, primarily in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It makes plastic clear, and is often found in:Water bottlesCanned food liningsBaby bottles (pre-2012)Takeout containersCash register receiptsDental sealantsArreaza: So, I've seen the “BPA-free” labels many times, and today I'm glad you are going to shed some light about it.Cam: What's alarming is that BPA leaches out of these products, especially when exposed to heat, acidity, or repeated use. A Harvard study found that people who drank from plastic bottles for just one week had a 69% increase in urinary BPA levels (Carwile & Michels, 2009).Arreaza: That's a lot of people 69%. Section 3: What happens when BPA gets into our body? How BPA Works in the BodyCam: BPA is classified as an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can bind to estrogen receptors and mimic or block natural hormone functions.It affects:Reproductive systems (both male and female)NeurodevelopmentThyroid signalingPancreatic β-cell functionMetabolism and fat storageEven low-dose exposure can disrupt cellular function. BPA acts as a xenoestrogen (foreign estrogen) and has been shown to alter DNA methylation, leading to epigenetic changes that persist across generations (Manikkam et al., 2013).Arreaza: So, BPA can cause epigenetic changes that can be inherited. BPA can persist for generations in your offspring.BPA's Health Impacts – What the Research SaysHere's where it gets serious. Let's go system-by-system:1. Reproductive HealthFemales: Linked to PCOS, infertility, and early puberty (Peretz et al., 2014).Males: Reduced sperm count and motility; altered testosterone levels.2. Pregnancy and Birth OutcomesIncreased risk of preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and low birth weight (Snijder et al., 2013).Studies show BPA crosses the placenta, directly affecting the fetus.3. Neurological DevelopmentAssociated with ADHD, anxiety, and impaired executive function in children exposed in utero (Mustieles et al., 2015).4. Metabolism and DiabetesBPA exposure is linked to insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, even at low doses (Lang et al., 2008).5. CancerAnimal and human data link BPA to increased risk of breast and prostate cancer via estrogenic mechanisms.6. MortalityA 2020 JAMA study found individuals with higher BPA levels had a 49% increased risk of all-cause mortality compared to those with lower levels (Gao et al., 2020).Arreaza: You are scaring me. I wonder what my BPA level is in my blood. Actually, BPA can be detected in urine. This is the most common approach for population-level biomonitoring, because BPA and its metabolites are mostly excreted in urine. Studies have found that BPA is present in most people, even up to 85–99% in large cohorts. Cam: That's literally everyone. Sources of BPA ExposureLet's talk about things we use every day:Thermal receipts (like from Target or Starbucks): BPA can transfer onto your skin and be absorbed, especially if your hands are wet or lotioned.Canned soups: One study showed that eating canned soup daily for five days led to a 1000% increased urinary BPA levels (Carwile et al., 2011).Plastic water bottles left in the car on hot days or plastic food trays for microwaving = chemical leaching.Baby bottles and pacifiers (pre-2012): primary concern for newborns.Arreaza: So, Cameron, you were exposed to BPA as a baby.Cam: Here's the jaw-dropper: We ingest up to 5 grams of plastic per week, roughly the weight of a credit card (WWF, 2019; University of Newcastle). This includes microplastics like BPA, which enter through food, water, and air.Arreaza: So, it translates into 40 lbs of plastic in a lifetime, by age 70. What can we do as family physicians?Family Medicine and Preventive CareAs family physicians, we are at the frontlines of prevention. Our role includes:Anticipatory guidance: during prenatal visits, well-child visits, and chronic disease managementScreening opportunities: ask about storage habits, microwave use, and receipt handlingEnvironmental health counseling: AAFP recommends addressing endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) when relevant to a patient's concerns.It's not just about treating diabetes or obesity. It's about recognizing that environmental exposure may be a root cause.Arreaza: Prevention is my favorite topic!Cam: One helpful clinical practice:Arreaza: What else can we do to reduce BPA exposure?Practical Steps to Reduce BPAHere's what patients and doctors alike can do today:Switch to BPA-free products, but be careful, as replacements like BPS or BPF may also be harmful (Rochester & Bolden, 2015).Avoid microwaving or dishwashing plastic containers.Use digital receipts.Filter tap water using carbon filters, which can reduce microparticle ingestion.Choose fresh produce over canned goods when possible.Also, wash your hands after handling receipts, especially before eating or touching your face.Arreaza: What is our government doing to protect us?Public Health and Policy UpdatesRegulations are slowly catching up:The FDA banned BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups in 2012.The European Union has stricter limits, and France banned BPA in all food packaging in 2015.California's Proposition 65 requires BPA warning labels.Arreaza: Proposition 65, passed by direct voter initiative in 1986, “WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.”Arreaza: The FDA is planning to phase out petroleum-based food dyes (certified color additives) from the American food supply – marking a significant milestone in the efforts to protect the public. Cam: Many products still contain BPA analogs (BPS, BPF), which are not yet well-regulated.This is where clinician advocacy matters, where we can guide public opinion and support legislative change.Arreaza: So, millions of pounds of toxic substances are produced by many industries in the US. Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. Football season is well underway now and the 120th episode is a complete recap of the summer 2025 transfer window. Danny and Jim break down the incomings, outgoings, and more as well as rate the entire window for both Chelsea Football Club and Bayern Munich. Buckle up because this was one of the most crazy windows in recent memory. And don't worry YES we will be streaming the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea. As always Chelsea did A LOT of business. Key incomings for Enzo Maresca included. Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Estevao, Buonanotte, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Jorrel Hato, Paez, Penders, and Sarr. Outgoings were Nico Jackson, Broja, Felix, Madueke, Christo, Ugochukwu, Mathis Amougou. Carney, KDH, Matos, Chilwell, Gilchrist, Humphreys, Veiga, Beach, Bergstrom, Bettinelli, Kepa, and Petrovic while players loaned out including partner club Strasburg were Paez, Penders, Sarr, Anselmino, Castledine, Kellyman, Samuels-Smith, Wiley, and Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich of course. Chelsea netted about 5 million euros in profit this window. Pretty impressive business. Bayern Munich's transfer window was less desirable. The club notably struck out on their main transfer target dating back many years Florian Wirtz, other key misses were Nico Williams, Bradley Barcola, and sadly many more. The lack of alignment between the supervisory board, sporting board, and even coaching staff made this a difficult window for Vincent Kompany and the Bavarians. Luckily there were some key incomings including Diaz, Tah, and Bischof. With Nicolas Jackson joining on loan from Chelsea. Sadly Bayern Munich lost key players who are already missed by the club, some of which left on a free transfer including Sane, Dier, and Thomas Muller. Other outgoings were Tel, Coman, Wanner, Aznou, Kratzig, and Vidovic. Players that left on loan were Palhinha, Kusi-Asare, Zaragoza, Peretz, Ibrahimovic, Zvonarek, and Buchmann. It's yet to be seen if this window will improve the squad for the long run but Bayern did net roughly 10 millions euros in addition to massive savings in the wage depart. Our question is about Onan who did not want this responsibility. The custom of levirate-marriage was practiced throughout the Old Testament (Genesis 38:6-10; Ruth 4:10) and even into Christ's time (Matthew 22:24). It is clear this was a divine principle during the time of the book of Genesis, and it was finally written down as part of the Mosaic Law,https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%2025%3A5-10&version=CJBDeuteronomy 25:5-105 "If brothers live together, and one of them dies childless, his widow is not to marry someone unrelated to him; her husband's brother is to go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her. 6 The first child she bears will succeed to the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be eliminated from Isra'el. 7 If the man does not wish to marry his brother's widow, then his brother's widow is to go up to the gate, to the leaders, and say, `My brother-in-law refuses to raise up for his brother a name in Isra'el; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother for me.' 8 The leaders of his town are to summon him and speak to him. Miriam Peretz is an Israeli educator and public speaker.  After the deaths of two of her sons during their service in the Israel Defense Forces, Peretz became a lecturer on Zionism and living with loss. She was the recipient of the Israel Prize in 2018, for lifetime achievement. In May 2021, Peretz announced that she would run for President of Israel in the 2021 election as an Independent candidate. She ended up losing the election to Isaac Herzog.
