David Mordechai Packouz, born on February 17, 1982, is a former American arms dealer, musician, and inventor. He partnered with Efraim Diveroli in 2005 to establish AEY Inc., which secured numerous contracts, including a $300 million deal with the U.S. government in 2007. This contract, aimed at supplying the Afghan Army, faced controversy as the ammunition originated from China, violating the contract terms. Packouz played a role in covering up this information. Following legal consequences, he was sentenced to seven months of house arrest for conspiracy to defraud the United States. Despite this, Packouz later turned his focus to music technology, inventing the BeatBuddy, a guitar pedal drum machine. He is currently the CEO of Singular Sound, a music technology company. In 2016, Singular Sound collaborated with the non-profit organization Guitars Over Guns to provide BeatBuddy equipment to underprivileged youth. Packouz, a central figure in the 2016 film War Dogs, has a daughter named Amabelle Jane, born in 2007. This episode is brought to you by Authors Unite. David PackouzTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know David Packouz. After growing up in Jerusalem, Israel and moving to Miami, David became an international arms dealer; sourcing arms & munitions for The United States Army, to help supply wars and conflicts in The Middle East. In this episode, David tells me how exactly this came to be, how successful he was at it, and how he ended up getting into some serious trouble with The U.S. Department of Justice. David was looking at the possibility of more than 300 years in prison! David's story became the inspiration behind the 2016 film War Dogs, directed by Todd Phillips; starring Miles Teller as David. The film was based on an in-depth article written by Guy Lawson, for Rolling Stone magazine. We also discuss his post arms dealing career as an inventor and entrepreneur. David founded Singular Sound, a company that develops and manufactures innovative new products for musicians. Singular Sound products have garnered huge accolades in the music industry, and continues to rank among the top companies that musicians swear by. Singular Sound's first and most notable creation is the BeatBuddy "Drummer in a Foot Pedal" device that was actually inducted into the Guitar Player's Hall of Fame in 2015. We also talk about the several other innovative products this company offers. Then we get into David's NEWEST invention, that has nothing to do with music at all! He, and his brother, re-invented the water pick. Instead of a single jet stream of water, The InstaFloss has 12 independent jet streams! This episode goes all over the place, as you can see. David even lets me play one of his own songs! David Packouz started out as a 22 year old arms merchant to the Department of Defense. He and his partner won a $300 million contract to supply arms and munitions to the Afghan government. The deal went bad and David and his partner were criminally convicted. His story became the subject of a front page NY Times article and a Rolling Stone feature article, and then a movie called “War Dogs” starring Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. David went on to establish his Beatbuddy music venture. A fascinating story! My featured song is “Tree Of Life”. This week's ads include a gnarly Takamine refinish, a whole bunch of shot glasses and the best description of a Fulltone GT-500 that I've ever seen. Finally, Ryan and Steve get saucy with a the Digitech Trio and the Beatbuddy drum machine. We put these two through their paces, talk about price points and discuss the pros and cons of each. The music tracks we were sent were in a non-compatible file format so we were forced to pull something out of the void. Turns out nothing on Ryan's computer will handle the WMA format. Thanks for nothing, Bill Gates. Last year we used national anthems when there was no music. This year we are going to do non-English language garage rock.
