David PackouzTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know David Packouz. After growing up in Jerusalem, Israel and moving to Miami, David became an international arms dealer; sourcing arms & munitions for The United States Army, to help supply wars and conflicts in The Middle East. In this episode, David tells me how exactly this came to be, how successful he was at it, and how he ended up getting into some serious trouble with The U.S. Department of Justice. David was looking at the possibility of more than 300 years in prison! David's story became the inspiration behind the 2016 film War Dogs, directed by Todd Phillips; starring Miles Teller as David. The film was based on an in-depth article written by Guy Lawson, for Rolling Stone magazine. We also discuss his post arms dealing career as an inventor and entrepreneur. David founded Singular Sound, a company that develops and manufactures innovative new products for musicians. Singular Sound products have garnered huge accolades in the music industry, and continues to rank among the top companies that musicians swear by. Singular Sound's first and most notable creation is the BeatBuddy "Drummer in a Foot Pedal" device that was actually inducted into the Guitar Player's Hall of Fame in 2015. We also talk about the several other innovative products this company offers. Then we get into David's NEWEST invention, that has nothing to do with music at all! He, and his brother, re-invented the water pick. Instead of a single jet stream of water, The InstaFloss has 12 independent jet streams! This episode goes all over the place, as you can see. David even lets me play one of his own songs! My guest this week is David Packouz, who may have the most interesting back story of just about any guest I've had on this podcast. David is the CEO of Singular Sound and creator of the innovative Beat Buddy drum machine pedal, which gives guitar players easy control of drum loops and songs when they play live. But there's a lot more to his story. Prior to starting Singular Sound, David worked as an major weapons contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense, which is a story in itself. In fact, his journey into arms dealing was the subject of the 2016 film War Dogs where his character was played by Miles Teller. After that adventure filled with international intrigue, David pivoted back to music and started Singular Sound thanks to an extremely successful crowdfunding campaign . Besides the Beat Biddy, Singular also makes looper pedals and controllers, all with the performing musician in mind. During the interview we spoke about navigating the dark world of arms dealing and how international politics plays a part (it's a great story), the key behind his super-successful crowdfunding campaign, why Beat Buddy has become the ultimate drummer in a pedal, and much more. I spoke with David via Zoom from his office in Miami. On the intro I'll take a look at how physical product might lead to the major label's downfall, and why music producers fear being replaced by AI. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 86468070, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Partnering with his former schoolmate Efraim Diveroli, their Miami-based company AEY Inc. rapidly transformed into a major military contractor – until their empire came crashing down amid allegations of fraud and illegal arms trafficking from Chinese and Eastern European sources. After pleading guilty and serving house arrest, Packouz traded guns for guitars, reinventing himself in the music tech world. He founded Singular Sound and created the BeatBuddy, a revolutionary drum machine that helped wash away his reputation as an international arms dealer. His wild journey from weapons trafficking to musical innovation later inspired the 2016 Todd Phillips film 'War Dogs,' starring Miles Teller as Packouz."➡️ Show Links https://www.instagram.com/davidpackouz/ https://x.com/DavidPackouz/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-packouz-7268929/ ➡️ Podcast SponsorsHubspot - https://hubspot.com/ Stan - https://join.stan.store/scottdclaryBusiness Made Simple Podcast - https://businessmadesimple.com NetSuite — https://netsuite.com/scottclary/ Indeed - https://indeed.com/claryRange Rover Sport - https://www.landroverusa.com/ CIBC Innovation Banking Podcast - https://www.innovationbanking.cibc.com/podcasts/ LinkedIn Jobs - https://linkedin.com/excellence➡️ Talking Points00:00 - Intro03:01 - David's Journey Begins08:14 - Choosing Culture Over Religion15:50 - First Steps in Business26:30 - Entering the Arms Trade31:05 - Selling to the Government33:33 - Red Flags in a Partner41:27 - Big Arms Deals50:40 - The $300M Deal1:00:20 - Sponsor: Business Made Simple Podcast1:00:50 - Fact vs. Fiction in War Dogs1:04:24 - What Went Wrong in the Deal1:31:18 - Why the Feds Came After David1:37:50 - Preparing for House Arrest1:55:20 - Finding a Market for BeatBuddy1:57:14 - Sponsor: Range Rover Sport1:58:49 - BeatBuddy's Secret to Success2:00:53 - Selling and Marketing Music Tech2:06:25 - Spotting a Winning Product2:12:20 - Fixing Problems: Software vs. Hardware2:14:47 - Mastering Behavior Change2:16:50 - Marketing to the Masses2:18:44 - Making One-Time Sales Profitable2:21:02 - Managing Multiple Businesses2:27:11 - Will David Sell His Companies?2:29:37 - Lessons from Arms Dealing2:53:15 - Who Can Do Government Contracting?2:57:18 - War Dogs Academy: Where to Start3:05:40 - Why the Government is a Dream Client3:14:20 - Advice to My 20-Year-Old SelfAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
