I'm generally not one for First-Person Shooter style games, but when I heard that Ben Esposito of Edith Finch, Donut County, and the Sonic Dreams collection (we actually don't talk about that one, shhh) anyway when I heard he was the driving force behind this game - I knew I had to pick it up. This is an indie dev legend dropping a new game. But I wasn't expecting it to look like… well, like a PS2-era COD mod. But I braved it anyway, dove headfirst, and I was NOT disappointed. There's a reason this indie game is a certified hit already, and it's not for the cringe-inducing narrative. No - this game does an incredible job of re-teaching gamers something that likely forgot about themselves: that performance-driven gaming doesn't have to be a competition. Even if there is a leaderboard, this game redefines what it means to git gud. For this video, I want to talk about how Ben does this and how it might help us understand our lives as human beings doing the best we can. Life isn't about doing everything correctly. It's about doing every correct thing. Let's talk about it.

Prata spel. Med varandra. Med andra. Med alla! ** In June 2018, Ben Esposito was on his way to a game conference when he received a email that said his game had been stolen. ** The idea he had been working on for six years was already for sale, by someone else. It might have been inevitable. We examine what happens when a bigger company sees an opportunity in your personal small game. We talk to creator of Donut County, Ben Esposito, the chief operating officer of Noodlecake Studios, Ryan Holowaty and many others about how a French media conglomerate operates and why there are so many mobile game clones. Music on this weeks episode were thanks to the Free Music Archive. We used "Self-Driving" and "Sentimental" by Sro, "The first person crossing the bridge since a century" by Komiku, "I Used to Need the Violence" and "Rewound" by Chris Zabriskie, "Bargains" by Steve Coombs, "fascinating earthbound objects" by free energy, and "CopperNickle" by UncleBibby. We're produced out of CJRU 1280 AM in downtown Toronto and made by Arman Aghbali and Daniel Rosen. Find out more at: https://builttoplay.ca

And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer. SPIKES FOOTBALL That's right! We made it to FIFTY episodes, and to help celebrate such a monumental achievement in podcasting, we snuck a couple of past guests in through the back door for a victory lap. Which guests, you ask? How about takes a somewhat deep breath, Carrie Patel, Tyler J. So what, you say? Well, what if I told you we talked with them about the main things students should know about interactive storytelling, how it's OK to be silly, storytelling confessions, extreme programming, whether game stories can be apolitical, what the differences between a good collaborator and a great one are (and how to work with a bad one), favorite underappreciated bits in games, anything they'd do differently with their past work, things you might not need to worry about with your storytelling, major influences, the Bon Appetit Test Kitchen, auteurism in games, the greatness of Yakuza 0, stuff they've worked on that they wish people appreciated more, and so! We’re finally here at the end of the longest year in the history of long, bad years. We barely played any games this year, so pulling together our favorite songs was a mighty task, but we weren’t going to let you walk away empty-handed. Also, let’s be real, it’s way harder to find ten good games than games with good music. Good game music is easy. You here me, Capcom?? EASY! THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR MEGA MAN TO SOUND LIKE THIS!*ahem*Please enjoy these hours of music and best of lists, and I hope everyone has a great end to the year from hell. May the hell be lessened and the games better in 2019. Thanks everyone, for everything.A few notes: you can find our episode for the music from games we played for the first six months of the year on Abnormal Mapping 79.
