My guest today is the American voice-actor and activist Sarah Elmaleh. As a student at Wesleyan University she performed in a variety of theatrical productions and radio plays, spending a portion of her studies at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford. After graduating she moved to Brooklyn, New York, and was working as a stage actor when she fell in with the city's game development scene, and decided to commit her life to the art form. She moved to Los Angeles and began voicing characters in blockbuster games such as Fortnite, Halo Infinite, Gears of War 5, as well as critically acclaimed indie titles such as Afterparty, Pyre, and Gone Home. During this time, she began working as a liaison between game developers and the actor's union, SAG-AFTRA. Today, she sits as chair of the union's Interactive Media unit, working to secure workplace measures that are common elsewhere in Hollywood. In this episode, we bring you a panel discussion from LA Comic-Con 2024 that shines a light on the often-unseen world of video game character creation. Moderated by Linsay Rousseau, the panel features industry experts and SAG-AFTRA members Sarah Elmaleh, Jasiri Booker, Andi Norris, and Seth Allyn Austin. These talented artists discuss the intricate process of bringing video game characters to life through movement performance, stunt work, and voice acting. From the challenges of performance capture to the collaborative nature of their work, the panelists offer behind-the-scenes insights into this essential but often unheralded aspect of game development. **The views expressed by the guests are their own and not that of SAG-AFTRA. Any mention of products or services does not imply SAG-AFTRA's endorsement.

During his more than 60-year acting career, James Earl Jones' voice became a star of its own. Jones died this week at the age of 93. One of Jones' career decisions continues to be an issue of debate: his permission to let artificial intelligence (AI) reproduce his performances as Darth Vader for new projects. Skywalker Sound and Ukrainian software company Respeecher used AI to recreate Jones' Darth Vader for the 2022 show Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show appears on the streaming service Disney+. The voice of actor Mark Hamill was also “de-aged” using Respeecher. Hamill played Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars movie. His AI-manufactured voice was used in the series' television show The Mandalorian. Disney+ launched the show in 2019. Voice actors say they fear AI could reduce the number of jobs because the technology can reproduce one performance into many. The concern led American unionized video game performers to go on strike in July. For some observers, Jones' decision to permit AI to reproduce his voice raises questions about voice acting as an art. But the decision also could help develop AI agreements that fairly pay actors for AI-based performances. Zeke Alton is a voice actor and member of SAG-AFTRA's interactive media agreement negotiating committee. He said it is “amazing” that Jones was involved in the process of reproducing his voice. “If the game companies, the movie companies, gave the consent, compensation transparency to every actor that they gave James Earl Jones, we wouldn't be on strike,” Alton said. “It proves that they can do it. They just don't want to for people that they feel don't have the leverage to bargain for themselves.” Hollywood's video game performers called for a strike after more than 18 months of negotiations over a new interactive media agreement with industry leaders. The negotiators could not reach an agreement on artificial intelligence protections. Members of the union have said they are not opposed to AI. They say they are worried, however, that technology could replace them. Concerns over such use of AI were among the reasons that film and television workers went on strike last year. The work stoppages went on for four months. Neither Skywalker Sound nor Respeecher answered a request for comment from Associated Press reporters. But a sound editor with Skywalker Sound spoke to Vanity Fair magazine about the issue. The worker reported that Jones approved the use of old recordings to keep Darth Vader alive. The worker added that Jones guided the new performances. Jones' contract could set an example of properly bargaining with an actor over their likeness, said Sarah Elmaleh. She is chair of SAG-AFTRA's interactive negotiating committee. Elmaleh, a voice actor, said there is a chance for these tools to be used in “meaningful, smart artistic decisions.”

Sarah Elmaleh is an actor, voice director, consultant and industry advocate best known for her roles in videogames, from blockbuster AAA titles (Hi-Fi Rush, Fortnite, Halo Infinite, Gears 5) to critically acclaimed indie games (Afterparty, Pyre, Gone Home). She has likewise directed a talented and diverse set of casts in both indies (The Red Lantern, The Wreck) and AAA (Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) alike. Her consultancy is designed to comprehensively educate and connect developers with novel and industry-standard performance processes, from navigating the union (SAG-AFTRA), to casting, to recording.Led by her desire to foster stronger collaboration within games and across creative communities, she has been an organizing and educating force in games spaces (such as IndieCade) and institutions (USC, NYU) for many years, while nurturing meaningful exchange between game developers and the actor's union, SAG-AFTRA. She teaches the core Queer Vox voiceover workshop Interactive module, has served as director and co-host of the IndieCade awards since 2016, and is one of six dev hosts of the game developer interview podcast Eggplant: The Secret Lives of Games.EPISODE LINKS: Sarah's Website: sarahelmaleh.com Sarah's Twitter: twitter.com/selmaleh Sarah's IG: @selmalehMORE ABOUT “NO SET PATH” Website: nosetpath.com Instagram: instagram.com/nosetpath YouTube: youtube.com/@nosetpathFOLLOW DREW ENGLISH Instagram: instagram.com/drewenglishh LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/drewenglish Twitter: twitter.com/thedrewenglish Website: drewenglish.com

To round out the year, we invited three friends to gather and discuss the games that made them feel most deeply. (plus, I share my top ten games of the year) Featuring special guests: Allegra Frank, frequent guest on one of my fav podcasts, ICYMI, editor at The Daily Beast, formerly at Vox, Polygon and Slate. Sarah Elmaleh, co-host on Eggplant, a podcast about videogames (not sex!),voice of high-profile video game villains (spheres, not cubes!), voice actor, director and advocate. Sarah Elmaleh is comfortable and happy portraying roles that reflect the various facets of her identity. As a director and voice actor for videogames, Sarah believes in a collaborative process where actors contribute to tone, structure, writing and content. A keen player growing up, she's still passionate about the growth possibilities and cross fertilization of games but she doesn't necessarily want to play all the games that she's had a role in or that she's directed. Her characters run the gamut of villains, monsters, heroines and creatures. Text is only part of what she has to vocalize. Often, it's a range of action noises and screams and she's adamant that there are union protections so an actor doesn't suffer vocal damage. In an industry where half the players are female, Sarah works to encourage more women writers and producers and characters that reflect wider racial diversity and gender orientation. www.sarahelmaleh.com and www.twitter.com/selmaleh. They share details of moving between projects, becoming more entrepreneurial, finding the best opportunities and developing a signature image and style. Sarah is an actor and voice over artist and has worked on a whole bunch of videogames including Gone Home, For Honor, Call of Duty, Pyre, Galak-Z and Final Fantasy 15. Her deep love for the Curse of Monkey Island and the subsequent radio play adaptation she made in college, how the Tango is a great example of emergent game play, the healing power of getting snowed in with Dragon Age: Inquisition, why The Mortician's Tale resonated with her so much, and how she got into games when she didn't know anyone in games (pro tip: meet Rich Lemarchand)."I don't think my father would approve of me dating the undead, and you're probably too nice a zombie-pirate for me anyway. Anthem voice actress and GameDev.world co-founder Sarah Elmaleh joins Joe this week to talk about how she's working to make game developer events more inclusive by hosting a "global game developers conference" called GameDev.world, which will be translated into dozens of different languages all over the world. Sarah also opens up about her experiences voicing the freelancer in Anthem, Katie Greenbriar in Gone Home, and her significant history of being an industry worker advocate! At GDC 2019, shortly after announcing Google Stadia, Phil Harrison sat down with Jason and Maddy to reveal more details about Google's new game streaming platform. He didn't say how much it will cost, but he did clarify the importance of a good internet connection to making this service work as well as it should. Plus, you'll need a Chromecast and one of Google's new controllers to make Stadia work on your TV. After we try and fail to get Phil Harrison to tell us whether Google has official E3 plans, we sat down for another interview with Sarah Elmaleh, the voice of Anthem's female protagonist.
GET IN, LISTENERS! WE'RE GOING TO ACTING CLASS! And joining us on this fantastically illuminating trip are Janina Gavankar (actor, musician, writer, and most recently seen in Star Wars Battlefront II, Far Cry 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, and the forthcoming Afterparty for Night School Studio) and returning guest Sarah Elmaleh (actor and voiceover artist on such projects as Gone Home, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Pyre, Read Only Memories, Masquerada, Final Fantasy XV, For Honor, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, and the BBC Radio drama Game Over)! We chat about letting actors become collaborators (and why it doesn't always happen), rehearsals, falling in love with Don Johnson, the audition process, what makes a good director, the worst piece of direction they've ever gotten, what takes us out of game stories, the kinds of roles and characters they'd like to see more of, the era of the antihero and its end, knowing the medium, not making decisions out of fear, if it's ever possible to know too much about a character you're playing, the film industry chasing the games industry, and so much more you don't even KNOW.
