Send us a textRemember the magic of endless summer days spent outdoors with friends? The Sandlot perfectly captures that fleeting, golden moment in childhood when every day brought new adventures and time seemed to stretch forever. This week, we dive into the beloved 1993 classic that manages to be both a product of its time and completely timeless. The film's portrayal of Scotty Smalls' journey from awkward outsider to accepted member of the neighborhood baseball crew resonates deeply with anyone who's ever felt like they didn't belong. We explore how Benny Rodriguez represents the ideal friend we all wished we had—talented yet humble, confident yet kind, and willing to believe in someone when no one else would. That relationship forms the beating heart of a story that's ostensibly about baseball but is really about friendship, growing up, and the memories that shape us.What strikes us most rewatching The Sandlot as adults is how it documents a way of childhood that seems increasingly distant—kids roaming freely through neighborhoods, creating their own adventures without constant adult supervision. There's something both nostalgic and slightly heartbreaking about seeing these children experience a freedom that many kids today might never know. The film serves as a time capsule not just of the 1960s it portrays, but also of the 1990s when such childhoods were still possible.Along the way, we unpack some baseball history (including whether Babe Ruth really "called his shot"), examine how the film's quotable lines have become part of our cultural vocabulary, and appreciate the practical effects used to create The Beast—that legendary neighborhood dog who becomes the catalyst for the film's final adventure. The Sandlot reminds us that childhood fears often loom larger in our imagination than in reality, and that sometimes the monsters in our lives are just misunderstood.Have you revisited any childhood favorites lately? We'd love to hear which films still capture your imagination decades later. Share your thoughts and join us next week when we begin our two-part coverage of Andor Season 1.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show

Anders and Aren dig into the independent baseball drama and explore the film's approach to time, use of character actors, and uniquely cinematic exploration of baseball and the end of things. Gonna be tough to be inside today. Can't wait to leave this building & get on the Harley! Lots to get to from the weekend including a cause of death for Gene Hackman & his wife, an update on the condition of the Pope, a shooting on the North Side of La Crosse yesterday, a frozen-water rescue in Eau Claire, and seven children left alone in an apartment in Madison. In sports, the Bucks lost to Cleveland yesterday, and the Badgers blew it against Penn State on Saturday. Now the Big Ten Tournament gets underway this week and Wisconsin is set to play on Thursday. In other Badger news, the women's basketball coach has resigned, and the women's hockey team is a number one seed in the bracket! Elsewhere in sports, we talked about this weekend's moves in the NFL, the results of UFC 313, and Alexander Ovechkin now just NINE goals away from passing Gretzky. Talked about what's on TV tonight and we also took a look at a list of tips to help your body deal with this weekend's time change. Surprisingly, "taking a nap" isn't on the list, even though today is National Napping Day! 2nd Floor Sarah stopped by just after 8am to let us know what's happening in our area this week, and we found out about a new app that's supposed to help prevent "doomscrolling". Great story about a high school golfer who saved an opponent from drowning after he fell into a water hazard. And check out this horrible list of the "Best Baseball Movies" according to the Hollywood Reporter. Talk about having your head up your ass. No "Major League". No "Sandlot". #ListFAIL Would you try a cheesesteak milkshake? One ballpark is going to be serving them up this summer. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a suspected arsonist who accidentally set himself on fire, a #FloridaWoman who assaulted a guy at a convenience store with a Pringles can, a daredevil named "Rocketman" who missed the landing because the wind changed, a guy who Googled "can I kill an illegal human" before allegedly murdering his undocumented husband, and a guy who picked his nose so much that he ruptured an artery & needed surgery to repair it. 076 - This one is a bit of a nostalgia bomb; a 90's movie set in the 60s? That's double dose of nostalgia - and this movie doesn't hold back - it's 1993's The Sandlot. We have been wanting to rewatch this one for.ev.er, and here we are. This is actually one of the smallest movies we have ever covered if you look at box office, but if you look at cultural significance, this thing was HUGE! Even all the way down here in Australia (where it was called The Sandlot Kids). For a lot of us, it's how we heard about s'mores, chewing tobacco and Wendy Peffercorn - and our induction to Baseball Americana. But how does it hold up today? Join us as we investigate.

In this episode, we join forces with The Popped Cast's Josh Goldman for a special crossover episode in which we break down the best baseball movies of all time. This episode originally aired on The Popped Cast, which you can find wherever you get your podcasts. Notes from the original podcast are below. In Episode 40, Josh welcomes guests Zac Crippen (the co-founder of the Vernacular Podcast Network, co-host of Vernacular Podcast and co-host of Vernacular’s sports podcast The Line-Up) and Peter Laclede (co-host of Vernacular’s sports podcast The Line-Up), for a very special episode where we rank a selection of 15 baseball movies from worst to first to celebrate the start of the 2019 Major League Baseball season. In no particular order, we ranked Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, The Bad News Bears, A League of Their Own, Bull Durham, Moneyball, The Natural, Fever Pitch, Major League, Rookie of the Year, Little Big League, Angels in the Outfield, For Love of the Game, 42 and The Rookie. We individually ranked each film on a scale of 1-10 in three categories. 1. Overall enjoyment of the film. 2. Overall quality of the film. 3. Baseball accuracy. We then averaged everyone’s score to get a total for each movie out of a possible 30 points. The film with the lowest score would be #15 and the film with the highest score would be #1.The results might surprise you - the top 5 were separated by just 3 and a half points.Email us at thepoppedcast@vernacularpodcast.com!Find out more at https://lineup.pinecast.co
