The Lufthansa Heist etched its name in the annals of criminal history, standing as a stark reminder of the audacity of organized crime. when a group of mobsters executed this meticulously planned robbery, they weren't just committing a crime; they were setting a new benchmark for criminal exploits in America. The heist, which occurred in the winter chill of December 1978 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, was not just another robbery; it was the largest of its kind in American history. Twelve years later, it would inspire the Martin Scorsese classic film, "Goodfellas." n 1928, a Colorado judge handed 38-year-old Danny Daniels, former safecracker for the notorious Kimes Gang in Oklahoma, two sentences: The first was 15 years hard labor for assault on a police officer. The second was 13 years, no hard labor, for armed robbery. Both sentences were to be served at at the Colorado State Penitentiary at Cañon City. Danny saw two problems with that. First off, Governor Billy Adams had promised the people of Colorado there would be NO PAROLE on his watch. Secondly, the sentences would be served CONSECUTIVELY...Danny swore there was no way he was going to do 28 years at Cañon City without the possibility of parole...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery--5496890/support.

World Cup 2022 was a bizarre story that began in 2010, over a decade before the tournament even kicked off. It was (still is we suppose) a story centered on corruption, human rights, and a gaudy display of power and wealth. It was also a bizarre experience on the ground, for fans, journalists, and even the teams playing (probably). It was made even more bizarre for American fans, and in particular fans, friends, and family of journalist Grant Wahl after Grant collapsed in the press box of the Argentina/Netherlands quarterfinal, and was later pronounced dead at Hamad General Hospital. Anyone who knew Grant, or at least his journalism, knows that he was a special human. He was an advocate, and before his death was famously detained outside Al Bayt Stadium early on at World Cup 2022 for wearing a rainbow on his t-shirt. But Grant wasn't the only person who experienced this. In today's episode, we hear from Brian Davis, a fellow footy traveler who had met Grant through US Soccer circles, and who had a similar experience in Qatar. Part 1: 0:49 | Death & taxes 2:27 | Recalling the 'scandals' of World Cup Qatar 2022 3:44 | Grant Wahl's final reports 8:53 | How to get your wife to an away WCQ 15:01 | Meeting Fernando Fiore and Rob Stone 17:15 | Meeting Grant Wahl Part 2: 21:19 | Sharing Grant's experience with rainbows in Qatar 24:10 | Things get physical 30:10 | The State Department is calling Foot(y)notes: Grant Wahl's "Qatar Chronicles" leading up to World Cup 2022: Part 1 and Part 2 Grant's original Tweet about getting held up outside Ahmed bin Ali Stadium ahead of USA v Wales Grant's brother Eric's video reaction to news of Grant's death Rob Stone's touching tribute to Grant on Fox's WC22 broadcast Dr. Céline Gounder's (Grant's wife) explanation of Grant's cause of death Coming in June: The best of Grant Wahl

This week BEHIND THE LENS welcomes SEAN McEWEN to talk about his new narrative feature film AMERICAN OUTLAWS while LILA SCHMITZ joins us to discuss her Irish music documentary THE JOB OF SONGS. First up, writer/director SEAN McEWEN joins us at the top of the show to talk about his latest feature, AMERICAN OUTLAWS, based on the true story of the Dougherty siblings and their cross-country crime spree as they embark on a journey in search of home, safety, happiness, and freedom south of the border. A situational character study set within the confines of a road trip, Sean delivers an up close and personal look into the mindset of these three siblings. A fascinating discussion with Sean as he talks about the making of AMERICAN OUTLAWS from script to screen, including gaining access to and meeting with each of the three Dougherty siblings who are currently incarcerated at three different prisons. Then writer/director/editor LILA SCHMITZ joins us discussing her feature directorial THE JOB OF SONGS, the lively, engaging, and thoughtful documentary THE JOB OF SONGS where we take a beautiful trip to Doolin, County Clare and the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and meet the local people in pubs and parlors, learning about their storied history of music and how it's "in their DNA". Sadly, we haven't been able to find any solid follow up on the situation :-/ Last but not least, the article Kudzi wrote for The Athletic about the 54 American-born players who played in the World Cup, but not for the U.S. **LEAVE US A RATING & REVIEW** We'd really, really appreciate it - like, REALLY appreciate it! - if you left us a star-rating. True story! Mike's hand rested gently on Brendan Hunt's (aka Coach Beard from Ted Lasso) butt for roughly 3-5 seconds. A moment he will always remember and one Brendan may wish to forget. Join us in this episode for this and other stories from our time in the great Australian state of Victoria during our travels for Women's World Cup 2023. We spot some koalas in their natural habitat, some kangaroos in a particularly peculiar place, and expand our footy experiences at one of the greatest Aussie rules football matches the AFL has seen this season! Speaking of which, we may have butchered the explanation of the ending of that game. Bombers were up by 1, then down by 5, but then... well, listen to the episode to find out! Foot(y)notes: If you're curous about the AFL after hearing this one, check out the truest professional 'footy' league in the world. This is where to guarantee yourself a kangaroo sighting. And here's where to start your koala 'hunting' adventure. Drive further up the road at your leisure.

So many acronyms in the episode title! In this BONUS episode, Colin caught up with fellow footy traveler Ryan Shirah, a major player in US Soccer supporters culture, at the American Outlaws Night Before Party (NB4), ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League Semifinals. Apart from serving as one of the heartbeats/drumbeats of the supporters section, and looking footy-supporter-costume-chic in his Ulysses S. 'Chant' get-up, Ryan is one of those genuine humans who always brings great vibes "Everywhere we go-ooooh!" Colin & Ryan chat about Ryan's footy travels, and why Americans (and the other guys) should be getting hyped up to welcome world-wide footy travelers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This week, we take a look at American Outlaws, a forgotten attempt at a 21st century Young Guns in which Colin stars as a twink-ish Jesse James. Full disclosure: this movie sucks and is almost completely devoid of substance so we mostly just talk about other stuff. Connor comes to the defense of Casino Royale. Cole forgets about the existence of Dances With Wolves. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This time, we take a look at the future noir crime thriller Minority Report and along the way we ask just how far is the government willing to go to stop crime, does Tom Cruise not run enough in this movie and why 2054 will hopefully be just alright? Let's dive in… Minority Report Movie Cast and Crew Directed by Steven Spielberg: At this point, Spielberg had established himself as the director in Hollywood. He had made hit after hit for over 20 years by the time Minority Report was released and this was his first time pairing with actor Tom Cruise. Starring Tom Cruise as John Anderton: Cruise has had staying power in the film business since he came onto the scene in the early 80's and has now become one of the top actors in Hollywood and is able to sell a film based on his attachment alone. Colin Farrell as Danny Witwer: In the early 2000's, there was no actor hotter than Farrell after appearing in the films Tigerland, American Outlaws, Hart's War, Phone Booth and S.W.A.T. Max von Sydow as Lamar Burgess: Sydow enjoyed a nearly seven decade long film career including several Oscar nominations and worked up until his death in 2020. Also Starring: o Neal McDonough as Gordon Fletcher o Steve Harris as Jad Watson o Kathryn Morris as Lara Anderton o Samantha Morton as Agatha o Tim Blake Nelson as Gideon o Peter Stormare as Dr. Eddie FROM THE MIND OF PHILIP K. DICK One of the most prolific science fiction writers of the 20th Century also gave us some of the most memorable films of the genre; Philip K. Dick wrote stories that would later be adapted into films like Blade Runner, Total Recall and Paycheck. He also wrote the story for Minority Report and for the most part, the film is faithful to the original plot. There are some differences but that's almost become the norm with a Philip K. Dick story. The rights to produce a film based on Minority Report were optioned back in 1992 and was originally envisioned as a sequel to the 1990 film Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and it's likely this version of Minority Report would've starred him as well but the film labored in developmental hell for so long that the film went through several different versions before the filmmakers settled on the version that released in 2002. Development originally began in 1997 and many actors were either offered roles or were cast including Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Jenna Elfman and Javier Bardem. Production was delayed twice; once so Cruise could complete Mission Impossible II and another time so Spielberg could direct A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and these delays caused the original cast to be shuffled around. PRESCIENCE OF TECHNOLOGY In the years since Minority Report was released, it has been cited as being particularly prescient for its display of future technology. One of the main points of the film is every citizen being scanned via their retinas literally everywhere they go throughout Washington, D.C. and this forces Anderton to undergo illegal surgery to swap out his eyeballs. Retina scans or other forms of biometric security are becoming more and more prevalent among technology firms as well as financial institutions in order to better safeguard sensitive equipment. The use of these retinal scanners are then used to create personalized advertisements when people walk into a particular store. These advertisements are tied to an individual's shopping history and in a precursor to today's tracking cookies, make recommendations based on that history. The idea of using technology to stop or prevent crime has also made its way to the real world via IBM and the University of Memphis. Working together, they developed the Criminal Reduction Utilizing Statistical History (CRUSH) program to be used by the University of Memphis to help the Memphis Police Department predict and help stop crimes. It was credited for helping reduce crime in Memphis by 31%...
