On January 2, 1984, top ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers entered the 50th Orange Bowl classic coached by Tom Osborne. The undefeated Huskers was looking for its first national championship since winning back-to-back titles in 1970 and 71. Standing in the way was the Miami Hurricanes coached by Howard Schnellenberger. The Canes was ranked #5 in the AP Poll and with the results of the Cotton, Rose and Sugar Bowls, Miami was in position to not only spoil the Huskers perfect season, but claim its first ever National Championship. In one of the greatest games in the history of College Football, it came down to one play and one coaching decision that ultimately changed the course of college football. Host Dana Auguster take you back to that early January night of 1984 to relive that game and the ramifications of that coaching decision that is still talked about and debated four decades later.Later in the show, Dana will send a shout out to the lone championship ever one by the then San Diego Chargers following the 1963 American Football League season. With their dominating performance over the Boston Patriots, we will examine the question could the Chargers have defeated the Bears in a winner take all championship game between the champions of the NFL and the AFL.

Hello everyone, today I talk about the legendary QB for the CFL and NFL Joe Kapp. Joe lost his battle with Alziemherz's disease on May, 8th, 2023 at the age of 85. He was a QB for the Cal Golden Bears, he also was drafted by the Washington Redskins now known as the Commanders in the 18th round of the 1959 NFL draft but ended but going up to Canada and playing for the Calgary Stampeders and the BC Lions of the Candian Football League. While in the CFL he earned an elite status for leading the BC Lions to a Grey Cup appearance in 1963 and a win in the Grey Cup in 1964. Before the 1967 season, he announced that he wanted to return to the United States and play for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. Also, teams interested in him were the AFL's Oakland Raiders now the Las Vegas Raiders, San Diego Chargers now the LA Chargers, and the Huston Oilers now the Tennesse Titans. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in a multi-player trade. Which saw the Vikings get Kapp and the CFL get Vikings player Jim Young who wanted to return to his native Canada. Joe's first season with the Vikings ended with 8 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, but the team showed improvement even though they went 3-5-3. 1968 saw the Vikings improve and play in their first-ever playoff game against the legendary Baltimore Colts now known as the Indianapolis Colts, they would lose that game. But in 1969 the Vikings with the motto of "40 for 60" would make a run led by Kapp on offense and the Purple People Eaters' defense. Kapp at an awards banquet would later turn down the team MVP award saying there is no one most valuable Viking there are forty most valuable Vikings I can't accept this and walked away to a roaring crowd of cheers. The Vikings would make it all the way to Super Bowl 4 where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL 23-7. Kapp would later become a free agent by NFL rules and he was "traded" to the Boston Patriots now known as the New England Patriots. After his playing career was done he would be in movies and tv shows. He would later become a coach and a gm. We here at the Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast wish to show our condolences to the Kapp family and to thank Joe for making the Vikings winners even though we didn't win the Superbowl.Support the show and hope you enjoy My social media links:Instagram:Steven Gervais (@steveng123456) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok:Steven Gervais (@sgandfriendspodcast) | TikTokFacebook group: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast | FacebookYouTube Channel: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast - YouTubeDeluxe Edition Network website: The Deluxe Edition NetworkGoodpods:Profile (goodpods.com)my website: Steven Gervais and Friend's Podcast (www.stevengervaisandfriendspodcast.com)Copper Johns beard: https://lddy.no/1gh13use SGANDFRIENDSPODCAST12 at check out for a 10 % discount on your purchase https://www.buzzsprout.com/1983118/support

The flamboyant James "King" Corcoran had a long and successful career as a minor league pro quarterback, achieving a near-legendary status due to his performance on the field and eccentric behavior off of it. He spent the better part of his first six seasons in the Atlantic Coast Football League. With Wilmington in 1966, he led the ACFL in pass attempts (247) and with Waterbury in 1967 topped the circuit in attempts (309), completions (141), yards (2065), and TD passes (19). Corcoran was cut by the AFL's Denver Broncos during both the 1966 and '67 preseasons and was signed to the New York Jets' taxi squad. He started the 1968 season with Bridgeport, which acted as a minor league team for the Jets, and after he was sold to another AFL club, the Boston Patriots, continued in the ACFL with Lowell, Boston's minor league affiliate. Corcoran again led the league in pass attempts (333), completions (166), yards (2158), and TD passes (20). He also played in two games for the Patriots, throwing seven passes, two of which were intercepted. In 1969, after failing to catch on with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL, Corcoran joined the Pottstown Firebirds for two seasons and led them to an 11-1 record in '70, a year in which he topped the ACFL in pass attempts (297), completions (164), completion percentage (55.2), yards (2129), and TD passes (24), although an injury caused him to miss the league championship game, which the Firebirds won. He was named to the ACFL All-Star team. After another failed trial with the Eagles in 1971, Corcoran returned to the ACFL and the Norfolk Neptunes, leading the league in completion percentage (52.6) and TD passes (17) as the club won the championship. He joined the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL for 1972 but quit rather than be a third-string quarterback and moved on to Chambersburg of the Seaboard Football League, but was injured midway through the season. He spent the '73 season with Flint of the Midwest Football League. Corcoran joined the Bell of the new WFL for 1974, reuniting with Head Coach Ron Waller, who had been an assistant with Pottstown and head coach at Norfolk, as well as a number of other players who had been teammates with both of those clubs.
Founded in 1968, the Pottstown Firebirds (also known as the Pennsylvania Firebirds in their final season) came into existence at a time when minor league football was enjoying some measure of popularity in North America, particularly in the Midwest and Atlantic states. Members of the Atlantic Coast Football League, the Firebirds were owned by underwear magnate Ed Gruber. The team became a farm club of the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) and played its home games at Pottstown High School's Grigg Memorial stadium. The roster, like that of a minor league team in any sport, was a mixture of players at the end of their careers, a few who still hoped to move up, and those who just wanted to play the game and had no real prospect of playing in the National or American Football Leagues. On the field, the Firebirds were led by quarterback Jim “King” Corcoran who had played college football at Maryland before landing on the roster of the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 1966. His only NFL action came with the Boston Patriots during the 1968 season in which he appeared in two games. An adequate signal caller, his off-field antics and larger-than-life personality (he used to congratulate himself out loud after throwing a touchdown pass, dressed flamboyantly, and was a bit of a womanizer), likely kept him from returning to the NFL.

The World Football League The World Football League was a short-lived professional football league, and Upton Bell was the owner of one of the teams, the Charlotte Hornets. In this episode, we pick right back up with the last part of the Upton Bell episode. This time we fire up that DeLorean and head back to November 22, 1959. The reason for this is because this is the day the Boston Patriots officially became a member of the American Football League. Upton didn't know on this date he would end up working for the Boston Patriots in the future, let alone the fact he would make the suggestion to rename them the New England Patriots. He also was not aware of his father passing away a month and a half before the Patriots were born would ultimately lead to him owning a team in the WFL. Life is crazy, and you never know what's going to happen. Upton passes this message to listeners of the show throughout the interview. Note - if you have not listened to the first 2 parts of the interview, then I suggest you do so first. It's a chronological kind of deal for Upton's life. Part 1 - Growing Up With Bert Bell Part 2 - Learning From Don Shula and Johnny Unitas Here you can find the dedicated Upton Bell page. Upton is the son of the First Great Commissioner of the NFL - Bert Bell. He joins us to share stories from his book: Present at the Creation - My Life in the NFL and the Rise of America's Game. Upton's book walks you through a journey in the history of the NFL unlike anyone else can. He had a first-hand glimpse of the beginning of the NFL when he was the son of Bert Bell, the first Great Commissioner. Upton was at a crossroads when his father passed away and ended up working for the Baltimore Colts and the Great Don Shula. He was the youngest GM in the NFL at the time when he took over for the then, Boston Patriots. He later owned the Charlotte Hornets, a World Football League organization. And as if that wasn’t enough of a diverse background, he worked his way into the media as a sportscaster. Oh, by the way, he interviewed some of the greatest people in the nation at the time. Some include George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, and Stephen Hawking. This is the 10,000 Eagle Eye View of Upton’s life, and there’s no way I could do it justice, so let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. So without further ado, I present to you, Upton Bell. So, strap on your seat belt, and let’s get ready to take this baby up to 88mph. Upton Bell Book - Present At The Creation Note - As an affiliate, I earn a commission on qualifying purchases. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. There was never a dull moment, and I highly suggest you pick it up. The interview is a 3-part series, but it would take triple that to cover everything in this book (maybe more). It's mostly a chronology of Upton's life. The book starts at the beginning, giving you an inside look into why Bert Bell was considered the First Great Commissioner. Then it walks you through his days with the Baltimore Colts, on to the craziness of the disorganized "Boston" Patriots, up to his time as an owner in the WFL, and then as a broadcaster. Of course, there's plenty more in between. Upton Bell Interview - Part 2 Note - This is part 2 of a 3-part series, diving into Upton's place in Baltimore Colts history. If you did not listen to part 1, I highly suggest you listen to last week's episode about how it was for Upton growing up with Bert Bell first. This episode we fire up the DeLorean and head back to October 11, 1959, the day Bert Bell passed away in front of his 2 teams at Franklin Field. We talked about this during the Bert Bell episode, and we left last week's episode off with this untimely death, forcing Upton Bell to make a decision about his future. In this episode, we find out what Upton did next, and how that decision ended up shaping the rest of his life. The story is told through the experiences of Upton Bell. Here you can find the dedicated Upton Bell page. Upton is the son of the First Great Commissioner of the NFL - Bert Bell. He joins us to share stories from his book: Present at the Creation - My Life in the NFL and the Rise of America's Game. Upton's book walks you through a journey in the history of the NFL unlike anyone else can.
Rob discusses how impressed he was with the overall performance of the team, particularly the Q-B! DETROIT (AP) -- Sam Darnold made a stellar debut despite throwing a pick-6 on his first NFL pass and the New York Jets intercepted five passes while routing the Detroit Lions 48-17 in their season opener Monday night. The 21-year-old Darnold became the youngest quarterback to start a season opener since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, and he got off to an inauspicious start. Quandre Diggs intercepted his ill-advised lob down the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown 20 seconds into the game. The former USC star shook off the rough start by completing 16 of 21 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He helped the Jets set a franchise record for points on the road, surpassing the 47 points they scored in 1967 against the Boston Patriots, and outplayed 30-year-old Matthew Stafford.
