In Part II of a four-part series on rural hospitals, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by the Center for Optimizing Rural Health (CORH), Michelle chats with Dr. Nancy Dickey, CORH’s executive director and Adam Willmann, CEO & President of the Goodall-Witcher Healthcare System in Clifton, Texas. Each year, Dickey notes, CORH selects 30 hospitals for the HRSA-funded Vulnerable Rural Hospital Assistance Program. Those chosen for the free program, whose application periods this year begins June 1, will have access to CORH’s team of rural health experts and receive technical support. Willmann’s hospital participated in the third year of the program, and he noted that the ability to connect with and learn from other hospitals was a major benefit to his institution. (To learn more and apply to the program, visit optimizing-rural-health-dot-org and click application portal.) Willmann has been instrumental in establishing the Rural Texas Health Cooperative with nine other rural hospitals, expanding surgical and psychiatry services and increasing net patient revenue by 164% since 2013. Formerly a 501(c) (3) institution, Goodall-Witcher is now a critical care hospital with nine physicians serving about 24,000 local residents, and is the largest employer in the county, according to Willmann. His hospital and wellness center have been built by finding local health care providers and securing the latest medical equipment, such as scopes for colonoscopies, which, in turn, can attract top surgeons. One of the challenges facing rural hospitals, Dickey says, is that very successful leaders such as Willmann can be sought after by other hospitals, and CORH is working hard to establish depth in hospital leadership. In addition, Willmann says there has been a significant expansion of telehealth services during the pandemic, in part because of the lessening of restrictions, but the pandemic accentuated the lack of broadband capability in rural areas. This episode and the entire four-part series is sponsored by CORH, https://optimizingruralhealth.org

50 years after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., most churches in America still remain largely separated by race. Those that attempt to overcome racial divisions in the pews are often met with challenges they didn’t anticipate. In this episode, you’ll hear from two grassroots pastors who chose to merge their racially diverse congregations five years ago, and the lessons they’ve learned that apply to anyone seeking to build bridges in their community.
With this episode we welcome Dan Willmann to the podcast. Dan became a Campus Crusade for Christ staff member in 1984 with the Campus Ministry at the University of Nebraska. He served as the director of Greek ministries (fraternities and sororities) for four years and then did the same at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. In 1990 Dan moved to Chicago to become a Field Representative for the JESUS Film Project (JFP) where he served for 6 years engaging high capacity ministry partners by raising money. A few years later Dan was asked to move to Southern California to provide leadership for JFP's national team of major donor reps. After serving with the JESUS Film Project for 20 years he transitioned to the President's office where he served for a year as the Director of Development for Global Church Movements. Dan was appointed the vice president of Global Fund Development in 2011. He now serves as an internal consultant with Cru. We first got to know one another at the church where we worshipped in Jr High school. It has been fun to periodically connect and see what God has been doing in one another's lives. In recent months, because of Covid-19 and the resulting shut-down, two topics have organically risen to the surface of our Orphans No More podcast: the impact the national crisis is having on children (especially those with trauma histories) and the importance of self-care for parents and caregivers. In addition to the trauma caused by the pandemic, information overload, the myth of multi-tasking, and the blurred lines between work and home responsibilities have many of us experiencing toxic levels of stress. As wounded healers, parents and caregivers must pay attention to our own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. If we are going to help our children navigate through this season, we must rejuvenate and nourish our own souls. Sandra Flach, host of our Orphans No More podcast, sat down with Amy Willmann, Director of Whole Hearted Soul Care to discuss why soul-care is vital and how we can enter into the shalom presence of God to find rest for our souls.

From the farms of Greenville, IL to the waters of Pensacola, FL, each place Kevin Willmann lived played a role in shaping his food. The chef and owner of Farmhaus in South St. Louis has received his fair share of awards and accolades, but the real praise is from diners at his intimate farm-to-table restaurant. The menu changes based on the season and what they find in the restaurant garden. His food memories go all the way back to picking a potato straight out of his family garden and the simplicity of a little salt and the produce coming straight out of the earth inspire him every day.

GMOs might be the first thing that comes to mind when we think about food and tech. Willmann, director of the Plant Transformation Facility at Cornell University, as well as Dr. Urvashi Rangan, the chief science advisor for GRACE Communications Foundation, about the potential power, and potential problems, of genetically engineering our food. This episode is a continuation of EP60 of the podcast in that I got to see Emma Willman perform a lot at this year's Women In Comedy Festival, and caught up with her by phone shortly after to talk about the festival and everything she's got going on. She was on the last season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and she's waiting to hear about next season. She's got a fifteen-minute Netflix special coming out on August 31. And a lot of her current momentum started with an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in September of 2016, which I wrote about for the Boston Globe here. I had not seen Willmann do an extended set live in a while, and she absolutely crushed both times I saw her do stand-up at the festival. That happens sometimes, when a comedian goes away for a while and comes back, you notice how much they've grown more than you would have if you'd been watching them right along. And Willmann has taken at least a couple of leaps forward since she left Boston. I saw her do a short set on an NBC showcase and then a longer headlining set at her own show, plus a taping of the WICF-sponsored podcast Person About Town, which is up on WICF.com right now if you'd care to head over there and listen when you're done with this episode. You can find out more about the festival at WICF.com and more about Willmann at EmmaComedy.com or follow her on Twitter @emmawillmann. Our featured track this week is “Runnin'” from Wajatta, a collaboration between Reggie Watts and producer John Tejada, a bigwig in the underground DJ scene. Most people probably know Watts as either James Corden's bandleader or from his time on Comedy Bang! Bang! But if you've seen him live, you know what a comic and musical genius the man is. He makes loops and improvs lyrics and sounds and ideas in front of an audience, and it's like nothing you've seen. Watts provided the hooks and loops and Tejada produced the final product, a spacey, dance-minded collection of grooves and hooks. The album is called Casual High Technology, and it was released May 11 on Comedy Dynamics.

Episode #3 : Gail meets up with comedians Emma Willmann (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), and Carly Aquilino (MTV’s Girl Code ) and discuss the "gay quota" in comedy clubs, jealousy among comics, and college audiences.
EMMA WILLMANN is a lesbian, even though she could pass as straight. Emma insists she barely talks about being a lesbian on stage or talks to other gay people offstage. She and gay celebrity JASON STUART had a nice convo about gay shit before Jason turned his attention to convincing David Kasten to sleep in his office in LA.
