The speakers discuss the two main streams of dark retreat practices - the Kalachakra tradition and the Dzogchen tradition - and how they differ in their approaches and interpretations. The conversation also explores the traditional secrecy surrounding these practices, the reasons for it, and the challenges of appropriately translating and adapting them for a modern, Western audience. The speakers emphasize the importance of understanding the cultural and environmental factors that shape these practices, as well as the need for caution and humility when engaging with them as outsiders. Finally, the speakers provide advice for those interested in exploring dark retreats, emphasizing the importance of sincerity, self-awareness, and gradually building up experience with darkness and contemplative practices. They also discuss the potential of dark retreats as a powerful tool for personal transformation and healing, particularly in addressing the challenges of the modern "dark age."

In mantra practice, the seed syllable sounds carry many layers of profound meaning and power. Among the most profound is Kalachakra's sacred syllables. All of these syllables are combined into one magnificent symbol, the Kalachkra Tenfold Powerful One. They are overlaid together into one symbol, but still separated by the symbolic colors. The Om Ah Hum and Hoh, which stand for the body, speech and mind of the Buddhas are represented by three crowning symbols: the nada, disc and cresent. In this mantra, Om which is the white disc in the symbol at the top, stands for the body of all the Buddhas. Ah, which is red is symbolized by the crescent moon and stands for the Speech of all the Buddhas. Why is Kalachakra practice recommended by great Buddhist teachers such as the Dalai Lama in these difficult times? Why is Kalachakra considered to be a highest yoga meditational form of Shakyamuni Buddha? How can Kalachakra meditation help to relieve our suffering? We answer these questions and more in this short, informative presentation on the the ultimate form of Shakyamuni Buddha. In this time, when wars and disease and economic turmoil arise again in Samsara, Kalachakra is among the most important practices in Vajrayana Buddhism, to help us overcome our many obstacles. This practice represents none other than the Highest Yoga Practice of the glorious conqueror Shakyamuni Buddha.Buddha taught in different ways for a multitude of suffering beings. In a display of this wonderful Enlightened skill, at the same time Buddha taught skillfully on our "plane of existence" — offering teachings in different ways to different followers, as best suited them — he taught in all planes of existence (time and space being relative and unlimited, after all.) The teachings of the Kalachakra Tantra are his highest teachings, although to achieve profound benefits requires training and a qualified teacher.Venerable Zasep Tulku Rinpoche explains:"Kalachakra deity is an emanation of Buddha Shakyamuni. He is the opponent of the age of degeneration, Kali Yuga.Kalachakra revolves around the concept of time (kala) and cycle or wheels.Kalachakra, in Tibetan Dhukor, means wheel of time, wheel of Samsara turning, wheel of sharp weapons turning, wheel of wars turning and wheel of suffering turning. At this time, it is important to turn the wheel of holy Dharma. It is time to practice Kalachakra Tantra."Support the show

"Every civilization has its territory of fantasy. The Mahabharata seems to have drawn the boundaries of that territory for the Indian people. At the time that it got into circulation, other texts too were being composed but they were restricted to certain groups, to Buddhists, Jains, or Brahmins. The Mahabharat, however, could get into anyone's imaginative territory. That freedom to wander around was the Mahabharata's great gift from the beginning and that's why it is still appreciated in different forms - on television, in films, in digital media, in art, and in drama." - GN Devy, author, Mahabharata; The Epic and the Nation talks to Manjula Narayan about the Indian obsession with the epic, the need for a Mahabharata institute that can collate versions in different languages, and his belief that India will never have a revolution that entails a definitive break from the past because we've imbibed the idea of Kalachakra or of Time as cyclical from the Mahabharata.
The Shambhala Prophecy talks about a time when the Earth is plunged into darkness! It is then the Shambhala Warriors emerge. Shambhala, which is a Sanskrit word meaning “place of peace” or “place of silence”, is a mythical paradise spoken of in ancient texts, including the Kalachakra Tantra and the ancient scriptures which predated Tibetan Buddhism in western Tibet. Shambhala is said to be the land of a thousand names. It has been called the Forbidden Land, the Land of White Waters, Land of Radiant Spirits, Land of Living Fire, Land of the Living Gods, and Land of Wonders, But throughout Asia, it is best known by its Sanskrit name, Shambhala, Shamballa, or Shangri-la. The legend of Shambhala is said to date back thousands of years, and references to the mythical land can be found in various ancient texts. Hindu texts such as Vishnu Purana mention Shambhala as the birthplace of Kalki, the final incarnation of Vishnu who will usher in a new Golden Age. The Prophecy of Shambhala has particular relevance in ancient mythology about the future which seems very relevant today. The Kalachakra prophesies the gradual deterioration of mankind as the ideology of materialism and consumerism spreads over the earth. As people become divided and battle amongst themselves, resources are plundered, the land is left to die and when the “barbarians” are finally about to take total charge and humanity is at the brink of total annihilation, the Shambhala Warriors emerge. It is said that this uprising is not an external battle but an uprising from within. An uprising of the heart, with not weapons of destruction but with the sharp sword of inner Discernment, held within the wise sheath of Awareness. With these tools the Shambhala Warriors begin to cultivate compassion, wisdom and love. The Shambhala Warriors are not picked or chosen, they are everyday people that choose to rise up and live in alignment guided by their inner heart compass. They bring deeper connection with the ancient ways of the Earth. A time when peace and harmony return back to the lands and the hearts of the people with a new found reverence for the spirit of nature within. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/shambhalaliving/message

Opening with a recommendation of Khentrul Rinpoche's "The Realm of Shambhala A Complete Vision for Humanity's Perfection" Professor Thurman interviews the third incarnation of the Kalachakra adept Ngawang Chözin Gyatso about his personal experiences as a reincarnate Tulku teaching and leading the inspiring non-sectarian movement of Buddhism down under in exile in Australia. Today we're continuing our two part journey into sand paintings not long for this world. This time we're heading into the world of sacred sand paintings at what's known as the roof of the world, Tibet, an autonomous zone in China which is just north of the Himalayan mountains. Let's go beyond the spinning Tibetan prayer wheels, the luminous glow of multitudes of flickering butter candles, and into the mystery of the sand painting called the Kalachakra Mandala. If you haven't seen it please visit us on Instagram @Whisperinggallerypodcast. There are hundreds of deities concealed within the mysterious, and flat, 2D sand painting. I'm not sure if this is just representative? Given logic, spatial limitations ie the missing full size mansion with rooms and different floors with room for the deities there's no clear explanation how they pull this off—If we go all sci-fi or mystical maybe they're in there somehow, just around the corner so to speak. Dimensions, wormholes or string theory - who knows? So Sand painting versus 3D model of the five floor mansion rendered in Maya that we can explore… not today my friends, not today. Instead, Hold on to your hat! Because what you're actually looking at-is- the 3D Kalachakra Mandala, from above. Drone view of a five-story mansion holding 722 deities — and this is where the Kalachakra deity manifests the state of enlightenment. If your head is spinning, you're not alone. In a series of Buddhist texts known as the Kalachakra Tantra there is mention of a mythical kingdom called Shambhala. This land is to be the birthplace of Kalki or Kalkin - the 10th and final avatar of Vishnu who will usher in the new age. Shambhala is to be ruled by the future Buddha Maitreya. This magical kingdom and escotological prophecy was introduced in the 11th century when King Manjusri Kirti ruled over a kingdom of 300 thousand followers of the ancient Mleccha religion. Of those 300 Thousand followers, some chose to cling to Surya Samadhi or (solar worship) and worshiped the Sun rather than convert to Kalachakra or (Wheel of Time) Buddhism. The King expelled 20,000 people from his domain who held fast to this solar worship. The king soon realized that these exiled few were the wisest and best of his people and that he was in need of them. He asked them to return to his kingdom. Some returned. Others did not. Those who did not return are said to have established the wondrous city of Shambhala.Join us for Part II of The Abominable Yeti: ShambalaOur Link to Everything T-GAULP!!!Art by BenJSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/MicahCampbell)

On Thursday March 6th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present Part Two of Frater Thabion's essay on Immortality. This section will deal with the theory and the methods of Consciousness transference to coming incarnations, what is reffered to in the East as the Tulku process. The Christian aspects of this concept will be discussed along with a review of the origins of Christianity in Gnosticism and its original principles. The relation of immortality to the Qabalah, Astrology, Alchemy and the Tibetan Buddhist Kalachakra system will be discussed. This is an important position paper and should be considered one of our more meaningful contributions to the Hermetic Revival. Listen in and learn how to live forever.
On Thursday February 27th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a purposefully cryptic lecture on the Hermetic conception of immortality and the concept of "The Great I AM," in Qabalah, astrology, alchemy, magick and Kalachakra. This profound and ultimate mystery can be explained briefly in fairly simple terms, but whenever someone tries to do this they are either laughed at, locked up, or put to death. The concept is so feared and reviled that it is demonized by psychologists and marginalized by modern philosophers, although the great pre-Socratean thinkers Parmenides, Empedocles and Heraclitus considered it primary: the starting point from which the science of logic and reason arise. The Great Secret is obviously not for everybody even though Jesus tried to get the common man to understand it in mythic rather than philosophic terms. And even though he mythologized it, he still got himself killed! So, we can't come right out and cast our pearls before swine, lest they "turn and rend us." But we can at least point to the philosophy and the science behind our mystery -- and encourage those who have "the mind" as well as "the speech" to find the center point and "the prize for the souls." So tune in and peek behind the veil.

The Hermetic Hour for Thursday, June 16th, 2011 will feature a discussion, led by host Poke Runyon, on the controversial Knight of the Sun, or Prince Adept, degree of Freemasonry. We will trace its history from its origin in the 1760s "Hermetic Rite" of Swedenborgian mystic Antoine Pernety, through its adoption into Scottish Rite in the early 1800s, and its subsequent Hermetic reconstruction by Albert Pike in 1857. In 2004 Scottish Rite removed the Hermetic philosophy from the degree, relegating it to a lecture on esoteric symbolism. We'll discuss the Hermetic-magical significance of the original Knight of the Sun, and the relationship of this degree to the seventh degree of Crata Repoa. In this sense it is the "Kalachakra" of the West. Tune in and be enlightened.
The Hermetic Hour for Thursday, June 9th, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. will present a very special program, hosted by Poke Runyon, discussing the mystical, historical and political aspects of the legendary Central Asian lost kingdom of Shambhala, and the Buddhist Tantric initiation into its mysteries called Kalachakra. Our very special call-in guest speaker will be Professor Andrei Znamenski, author of the new book "Red Shambhala," from Quest Publications.
