In this deeply personal and insightful episode, Steven tackles two of the most common yet misunderstood challenges: anxiety and imposter syndrome. He argues that these feelings themselves are not the problem. The real issue? Our belief that we shouldn't be experiencing them. Steven shares his own vulnerable journey, from council meetings feeling unqualified, to navigating high-pressure Q&A panels, and the everyday internal dialogues that come with stepping up.Key Themes & Takeaways:Reframing the "Problem": Anxiety and imposter syndrome are natural human experiences, not flaws to be eradicated. The real struggle comes from resisting them. The Power of Listening (Not Obeying): Our minds are full of voices – some fearful, some critical, some brave. The skill is in acknowledging them all, like a chairperson listening to a committee, without letting any single voice dictate your actions.Authenticity in Vulnerability: Sharing your doubts and fears doesn't make you weak; it makes you relatable and authentic. Steven would rather be in a room with people who acknowledge their imposter syndrome than those who deny it.Showing Up Anyway: True courage isn't the absence of fear, but acting despite it. Your unique 1% of knowledge or perspective might be exactly what someone else needs to hear.Personal Anecdotes of Resilience:Feeling like an outsider in professional council meetings. The "climate change conference" Q&A panel where a simple, honest answer resonated most.Being a charity trustee (Community Energy Plus) and doubting his contribution. The internal battle when asked to apply for a vice-chair role. The physical manifestations of anxiety before important events. It Doesn't Go Away, It Becomes Part of the Dialogue: These feelings may not disappear, but our relationship with them can change. They can become familiar (if sometimes annoying) companions rather than paralyzing enemies.Food for Thought:What if your anxiety and imposter syndrome are simply signals, not stop signs? How can you "chair" the committee of voices in your own head more effectively?Remember: "Confidence isn't the absence of self-doubt; it's showing up anyway."Support Stillness in the Storms:This podcast is ad-free thanks to listeners like you! We explore what Zen really means and how we can apply it to our daily routines without it just being some trendy catchphrase. Through this episode, we challenge the idea that our lives are broken and discuss the importance of embracing the present moment as it is. I share personal stories and insights on how Zen can help us find peace amidst chaos. So, let's sit back, relax, and learn how to just be in our moments without the urge to change everything around us.Self acceptance is a journey we all navigate, and in this episode, Steven Webb dives deep into the concept of Zen and how it relates to our everyday lives. He shares a powerful quote: "Zen doesn't fix your life; it stops you needing to." This sets the stage for a conversation about what Zen truly means. It's not just a trendy phrase or a meme we see online; it's about embracing the present moment and realizing that life is not broken, but rather, we often feel the urge to fix things that don't need fixing. Steven invites listeners to explore how to incorporate Zen into their lives, focusing on being present and accepting ourselves as we are. He emphasizes that life is full of challenges, but rather than trying to change everything, we can learn to sit with our experiences and recognize that suffering is part of being human. By adopting a Zen mindset, we can find peace in the chaos and appreciate the beauty of the moment without the constant need for improvement.Takeaways: Zen doesn't fix your life but helps you stop needing to fix it. Being present in the moment allows you to accept life as it is right now. The desire to always fix things can lead to never-ending dissatisfaction in life. Happiness is not an achievement but an experience that happens in the mundane.

I'm Steven Webb, and today we dive into how those forced pauses in our day can help us find inner peace, even when life feels chaotic. We often think that spirituality means lengthy meditation sessions, but it doesn't have to be that complicated. Instead, we can use everyday moments—like waiting at a traffic light or taking a breath before a meeting—to reconnect with ourselves. Let's explore how these simple breaks can help us manage stress and stay present, making our spiritual journey a lot more manageable and meaningful.Finding peace in a fast-paced world can be a daunting task, but it's all about perspective. This podcast episode dives into the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and the simple yet profound practice of taking timeouts to reconnect with ourselves. I share my own experiences, noting that while I can smile and breathe, the challenge often lies in slowing down. The message here is that spirituality can be found in the everyday moments, not just in long meditation sessions or complicated practices.Throughout our conversation, I encourage listeners to embrace the forced pauses in their daily lives, such as waiting at traffic lights or dealing with interruptions. These moments can be transformed into opportunities for mindfulness, helping us to breathe, reset, and refocus. By allowing ourselves to take these timeouts, we can cultivate a sense of calm that permeates our lives, helping us navigate the chaos with more grace and clarity.I remind everyone that the spiritual journey is not a straight line; it's filled with ups and downs, and that's perfectly okay. It's about becoming more compassionate toward ourselves and recognizing that we're all doing our best. By integrating these small moments of stillness into our day, we can create a more peaceful existence and ultimately allow ourselves to respond to life rather than react. This episode serves as a gentle nudge to appreciate the little pauses that life offers us and to use them as tools for growth and awareness.Takeaways: Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us to smile, breathe, and take things slow in life. Each encounter, each emotion, and each experience contributes to the mosaic of our lives. During a poignant moment, he reconnects with Melvin, the paramedic who flew him to Salisbury 33 years ago, triggering a flood of emotions and reflections on how interconnected our lives can be, even across decades. Steven encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives and the moments that have defined them. He emphasizes that memories are stored not in a linear fashion but as emotional experiences. Whether joyful or painful, these moments teach us resilience and shape who we are. He shares personal anecdotes, like the time he walked his dog and how that experience became a lasting memory. These moments, whether big or small, can hold great significance. As the episode unfolds, Steven invites us to cherish every moment, reminding us that they are fleeting yet impactful. Stephen encourages listeners to reflect on their own 'elephants'—the unacknowledged truths in their lives—and to consider the value of sitting with discomfort rather than fleeing from it. He emphasizes that true acceptance may not come from fighting against our realities but from recognizing and embracing them. The episode evolves into a broader philosophical discourse on the essence of suffering and the human experience. Steven articulates the idea that the desire to alleviate suffering is a fundamental aspect of life, influencing our choices and interactions. He suggests that in our quest for relief, we often overlook the beauty of simply being present with our struggles. Webb likens our identities to a blank canvas, suggesting that the colors we are given—our upbringing, relationships, and societal norms—greatly influence how we paint our lives. He challenges the audience to reconsider the labels they adopt, such as their professional roles or familial identities, and how these can limit their perception of what is possible. As the discussion unfolds, Webb delves into the nature of the ego, articulating how it is a construct that both protects and constrains us. He highlights the importance of recognizing that while our past experiences shape us, they do not have to define our futures. This perspective fosters a sense of possibility, encouraging listeners to embrace change and challenge the narratives that may hold them back. Ultimately, Webb's message resonates with the idea that identity is not a static concept but rather a dynamic one that can evolve over time. By encouraging a flexible approach to self-definition, he empowers listeners to drop the weight of their stories and embrace the freedom that comes with living authentically. This episode serves as a powerful reminder that each moment presents an opportunity to redefine who we are and how we engage with the world around us.Takeaways: The question 'Who are you without your story?' challenges us to rethink our identities. Stories and labels we adopt often come from others, shaping our perceptions of ourselves. We can choose how to paint our life canvas, using different colors as we wish. Steven introduces a unique technique inspired by Taoism and the teachings of Alan Watts, emphasizing the importance of non-action and acceptance in the process of letting go. Join Stephen as he provides insights and tools to cultivate a calmer, more centered state of being, enabling you to navigate life's challenges with less emotional turmoil.Takeaways: You cannot control which thoughts arise, but you can choose how to respond to them. Understanding that thoughts are not inherently positive or negative can reduce suffering. Observing thoughts as they come allows you to detach and prevent unnecessary emotional reactions. Training your subconscious mind involves choosing to engage with thoughts that serve you best. Thoughts should be viewed as trains at a station; you can choose which ones to board. By allowing thoughts to pass without engaging them, you cultivate a more peaceful mindset. Links referenced in this episode:stevenwebb.ukExploring the intricate relationship between our thoughts and our perception of reality, Steven Webb delves into the profound concept that thoughts, whether deemed positive or negative, are merely fleeting phenomena that do not define us. Drawing from personal experiences and a background in meditation, he articulates how the mind's primary function is to generate thoughts, much like the heart pumps blood. The true power lies not in the thoughts themselves, but in our capacity to choose whether or not to engage with them. Webb emphasizes that while we cannot control which thoughts arise, we can certainly influence how we respond to them. This pivotal distinction can lead to a significant reduction in suffering, allowing individuals to cultivate a more peaceful existence. As he shares insights gathered from his journey through paralysis and meditation, listeners are encouraged to observe their thoughts without judgment, creating space between stimulus and response, ultimately leading to a more harmonious state of mind.Steven also introduces the metaphor of a train station to illustrate how thoughts come and go, much like trains arriving and departing. Each thought presents an opportunity for engagement, yet we are not obligated to board every train that arrives. By making conscious choices about which thoughts to follow, we can train our subconscious to present us with more of what we desire, whether that be gratitude, joy, or peace. Webb's candid storytelling, including anecdotes about his challenges, invites listeners to reframe their understanding of thought patterns, shifting away from a binary perspective of positivity and negativity. This change in viewpoint can empower individuals to navigate their mental landscapes with greater ease and clarity, fostering a sense of agency in their emotional experiences.Through guided meditative practices, Webb encourages listeners to embrace moments of stillness as a means to observe their thoughts. You can support the show and submit you questions here - stevenwebb.ukOn this episode of Stillness in the Storms, meditation teacher Steven Webb explains how our thoughts shape our reality through what he calls the "thought funnel." Discover how becoming aware of this funnel can help reshape your perspective.Introduction (0:00-1:00)Steven introduces the concept of the "thought funnel" and how it impacts our realityHe asks listeners to visualize this funnel to understand how thoughts build in complexityThe Thought Funnel Explained (1:00-6:00)At the bottom is the "point of origin" where thoughts and feelings ariseAs thoughts move up through the funnel, more layers like stories and emotions are addedThis adds complexity until we're stuck in "pea soup" at the top, disconnected from clarityExperiment to See the Funnel in Action (6:00-10:00)Steven leads a visualization exercise looking at objects and how stories build around themNotice how quickly thoughts create emotions, judgments and complexityThe more we dwell on a subject, the thicker the funnel getsKey Takeaways About the Funnel (10:00-14:00)Everything in the funnel is impermanent, but the point of origin remainsWe wrongly believe the cluttered top of the funnel is realityTrue reality is at the base - pure awareness before storiesHow to Return to the Funnel's Source (14:00-19:00)Meditation helps witness the funnel without getting lost in itThoughts often start with care before other emotions ariseWe can choose whether to engage in a thought storyline or notWith practice, we gain the ability to stop stories and return to the present momentWe all know what it's like to be lost in thought - falling down rabbit holes, getting tangled in stories, and feeling disconnected from the present moment. This week on Stillness in the Storms, meditation teacher Steven Webb offers a powerful mental model to understand this phenomenon - the thought funnel.According to Steven, our minds are like funnels that thoughts and feelings flow through. At the very bottom is the point of origin, where each thought arises before it builds in complexity. As thoughts move up through the funnel, we unconsciously add layers to them - judgments, emotions, past experiences, future fantasies. Before we know it, our clear thoughts have turned to muddy confusion. The problem is that most of us spend our mental lives near the cluttered top of the funnel, caught up in the swirling chaos. We mistakenly believe this overflow of thoughts represents reality. But the truth is, reality exists at the clear bottom of the funnel - in the space of pure awareness that exists before thought. So how do we return to clarity? Through meditation, says Steven. By watching the thought funnel in action, we can learn to catch ourselves getting sucked into unhelpful thought loops. Instead of going down every mental rabbit hole, we can gently return to the bottom of the funnel - to pure presence.Learning this skill is not easy, but it holds the key to serenity. When we stop identifying with every passing thought, we reconnect to our inner stillness. We realize thoughts are just thoughts - not necessarily truth or reality. We become less reactive, more responsive to life's curveballs. So if you're looking for more inner peace, listen to this week's episode on the thought funnel. Understanding how thoughts build into suffering can be the first step to dismantling it. Let Steven's wisdom guide you from the noisy top of the funnel to the blissful bottom - the open, lucid space that lies beneath...
