The 3 Malas: 3 Reasons Why You're Not Enlightened

We now turn to a very sophisticated discussion about the reasons why we are not immediately, spontaneously aware of the fact that we are non-dual, pure Consciousness in which the world shines non-differently. If I am Shiva, as this tradition tells me, then why don't I know it? How does Shiva hide himself from himself? To explain the mechanism of self-concealment (and also to point the way to instant liberation), we receive this teaching on the 3 malas, the 3 "impurities." In Shaiva Siddhānta, these malas are seen as substantive (i.e real) and therefore must be actually removed through grace. In Non-Dual Tantra, Abhinava reframes "mala" to mean just "ajñāna", ignorance as you can see in the verse below from the Tantrasāra:अज्ञानं किल बन्धहेतुरुदितः शास्त्रे मलं तत् स्मृतं पूर्णज्ञानकलोदये तदखिलं निर्मूलतां गच्छति। Ajñānaṁ kila bandhaheturuditaḥ śāstre malaṁ tat smṛtaṁ pūrṇajñānakalodaye tadakhilaṁ nirmūlatāṁ gacchati| Dhvastāśeṣamalātmasaṁvidudaye mokṣaśca tenāmunā śāstreṇa prakaṭīkaromi nikhilaṁ yajjñeyatattvaṁ bhavet (4)Ignorance alone is the cause of bondage and it is that ignorance which is called impurity by the scriptures. With the rising of the moon of perfect knowledge, that ignorance is uprooted completely ! When Pure Consciousness is revealed as a result of the destruction of all impurities: that is indeed what is called Liberation! Therefore by means of this Tantrasāra, I will reveal that highest Reality! This is a very radical reframe and it allows for the view that a person can (a) be instantly liberated and (b) can enjoy liberation even while embodied! Verses from the Paramārthasāra on Mala:तुष इव तण्डुलकणिकामावृणुते प्रकृतिपूर्वकः सर्गः। This emission of Prakriti down to Prthvī covers consciousness with (the feeling of) a (limited) body the way the husk covers a grain of rice. The supreme veil of the (ānava) mala, the subtle kancukas composed of Māyā (kalā, vidyā, rāga, kāla, niyati) (i.e mayīya mala) and the external, physical body (kārma mala) are the three sheaths which cover the Self. This class is part of our Paramārthasāra series which is an introduction to Non-Dual Tantrik metaphysics in theory and practice. After our lecture on The 12 Secret Kālīs | & The Most Closely Guarded Secret in Tantra where we introduced the powers of non-dual consciousness which flow in a 12-step sequence (which we argued was one of the subtlest teachings of Tantrik non-duality if not THE subtlest teachings), many were asking: "how do we invoke the 12 Kālīs, worship them, relate to them and incorporate them into our day-to-day sādhanā?" In this talk, we introduce one of the two Krama Stotrams and introduce Abhinava Gupta's "wheel of fire meditation" from Tantrasāra Chapter 4, which he received from his Krama guru, Bhūtirāja. The 12 KalisPrameyam (aparā): KNOWN OBJECTSṛṣṭikālī = manifesting an object internally, she then Raktakālī (bahirmkuhī) = becomes passionate towards that object Sthitināśakālī = wishes to reabsorb it and starts to internalize it Yamakālī = manifests and dissolves a "vighna" (obstacle) to re-absorption Pramānā (parāpara): ACT OF KNOWING Saṃhārakālī = reabsorbs the object Mṛtyukālī = and contemplates "svabhava": my very nature is to reabsorb! (i.e savors the experience just had) Rudrakālī = perceives a subtle impression left over from perception + also Pure Consciousness and then devours the subtle impressionMārtaṇḍakālī = reabsorbs the solar-mandala of 12 faculties into the "Lord of the Circle" (ego) Pramātr (parā): KNOWER Paramārkakālī = reabsorbs the Lord of the Circle (ego) Kālāgnirudrakālī = reabsorbs the separation of one purusha (individual knowing subject) from another (mayīya-mala) Mahākālakālī = reabsorbs the Universal Subject (Shiva) into full expansion Mahābhairavacaṇḍograghorakālī = reabsorbs even that fully expanded ground into...what? void unspeakable! (or rather: articulates transcendence as immanence!) Here are just the first 5 verses of the Krama Stotram:Kaulārṇavānanda-ghanormi-rūpām unmeṣa-meṣobhaya-bhājam antaḥ |nilīyate nīla-kulālaye yā tāṃ ṣṛṣtikālīṃ satataṃ namāmi || 1 ||I always praise that Kālī of Emission, who blooms and recedes like a wave of bliss in the ocean of the Kaula! mahā-vinodārpita-mātṛ-cakra- vīrendrakā-sṛg-rasa-pāna-saktām |raktīkṛtāṃ ca pralayātyaye tāṃ  namāmi viśvākṛti-rakta-kālīm || 2 ||I always praise that Passionate Kālī who manifests this world and who savours the world during a pause in dissolution, she who happily drinks the nectarean blood offered to the circle of Mothers by heroes (Tantrik adepts)! vāji-dvaya-svīkṛta-vāta-cakra- prakrānta-saṅghaṭṭa-gamāgama-sthām |śucir yayāstaṃ gamitorciṣā tāṃ  śāntāṃ namāmi sthiti-nāśa-kālīm || 3 ||I salute that peaceful one, The Kali Who Destroys Stasis, who is there in the coming and going of the breath and the perfect union of breath which is set in motion by the Wheel of Wind (life-force), who dissolves all notions of purity! sarvārtha-saṅkarṣaṇa-saṃyamasya  yamasya yantur jagato yamāya |vapur mahāgrāsa-vilāsa-rāgāt  saṅkarṣayantīṃ praṇamāmi kālīm || 4 ||I prostrate before that Kali who out of desire for the play of great devouring and controlling the world dissolves Yama the controller, who controls the destruction of things! unmanyanantā nikhilārtha-garbhā yā bhava-saṃhāra-nimeṣam eti |sadoditā satyudayāya śūnyāṃ Saṃhārakālīṃ muditāṃ namāmi ||5I salute that Destroying Kali who is the endless, ever-radiant and joyful transcendent Void, the Womb of all things, who closes her eyes in order to withdraw the world so as to give rise to the Void (Consciousness).Support the show

This episode concludes our reading of Chapter Five of Abhinavagupta's Tantrasāra. Here, we learn about The Rite of the Phonemes, or varṇa-uccāra (also known as varṇa-vidhi) in Sanskrit, exploring teachings on two of the most significant bīja mantras of the Trika lineage, the seed syllables of dissolution and creation. These mantras are uniquely powerful by virtue of their inherent vibrational potency which doesn't require their conceptual understanding. They are divinely revealed vibrations, the innate vibrancy of awareness itself, that transcend the need for conceptual representation by the mind. You can read the text in the related blog post here.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. Tomorrow (October 1st, 2024)  is a very, very special day: a new moon night on Tuesday, the eve of Navarātri, the 9 nights of the Goddess! Mā Kālī tells us in the Tantras that this is the best time to worship Her! Naturally, those of you who might want to worship Her will ask "well how do I worship Her?!" Of course, the worship of Mā Kālī is some very high level Tantra being that She is the Goddess of the Tantras! But there are some wonderful resources out there for beginners to get started:For example, Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati's beautiful book "Simple Kali Puja", which you can pick up on the internet or find on the Kālī Mandir website: https://www.kalimandir.org If you're totally new, I recommend starting here. As with all things, start small and slowly expand according to capacity and interest. Pujya Swamiji's book is very complete as it is concise, walking you through all the main mantras in Kālī worship which for so long has been kept secret! Some time ago, on the new moon night of Phalahārinī Kālī Pūjā, we gave this talk on How To Worship Mā Kālī which focused more on the "internal worship" (mānasa Kālī pūjā):https://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-worship-105659438?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkNow, we present an abridged, abbreviated external worship in 16 steps/sections!The mantras can all be found in written form here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-perform-113071076?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkFor more detailed puja instructions, watch this playlist:https://www.patreon.com/collection/233799Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

In this episode, we continue with the scriptural reading from Abhinavagupta's "Tantrasāra," specifically with the second part of Chapter Five, titled "Illumination of the Individual/Embodied Method (ānava-upāya)." Here the focus is on the practice of prāṇa-uccāra, the elevation of the life-force. In this chapter, Abhinavagupta presents some esoteric teachings in the form of homologies, associations, between the five prāṇa-vāyus, the five cakras, the five (or six) stages of bliss, and the five mystical experiences that one can experience in these yogic processes. These associations are elucidated with clarity in this blogpost. The episode includes a guided meditation to illustrate how to engage with these teachings, offering a practical application. These practices engage the body-mind through imagination (buddhi) with powerful meditative visualization (dhyāna), movement of vital energy (prāṇa) in both subtle and less subtle forms, specific bodily poses (karaṇa), and ritual practices (pūjā). Each practice is designed to enable awakening to the true nature of reality. Today is the monthly śivarātri (the day before the new moon) and the Wednesday Amāvasyā (new moon) features a very special celebration, the Phalaharini Kali Puja, one of the Big Three for Kali in the calendar year!  Naturally, I wanted to do something special in this lecture to mark the occasion: I felt like we should discuss the very highest, the very essence, the very heart of the Tantrik tradition.  And the best way to do this, I humbly propose, is to introduce you to one of the most important Tantrik texts ever composed: The Tantrasāra of Abhinavagupta. In this lecture, we discuss the four things that Abhinavagupta points out as the defining features of this tradition that make it so awesome. I want to share with you the central insight from this text which has the power and potential to totally liberate us in a single instant! Also we can talk a little about “Kashmir Shaivism” as the scholars are calling it these days, and discuss what it means to be part of this lineageविमलकलाश्रयाभिनवसृष्टिमहा जननी भरिततनुश्च पञ्चमुखगुप्तरुचिर्जनकः। Vimalakalāśrayābhinavasṛṣṭimahā jananī bharitatanuśca pañcamukhaguptarucirjanakaḥ| Tadubhayayāmalasphuritabhāvavisargamayaṁ hṛdayamanuttarāmṛtakulaṁ mama saṁsphuratāt || 1 May my heart, filled with the nectar of the Embodied Absolute and pervaded by the emissions of the ecstatic union of my Mother who is the stainless ground of ever new creation, and my Father who is the five faced Shiva who in fullness is always delighting himself in that creation, shine forth!  Vitatastantrāloko vigāhituṁ naiva śakyate sarvaiḥ| Ṛjuvacanaviracitamidaṁ tu tantrasāraṁ tataḥ śṛṇuta || 2 Not everyone is capable of diving into the the oceanic Tantrāloka Therefore, listen, all of you, to this Tantrasāra which is written in simple language! Śrīśambhunāthabhāskaracaraṇanipātaprabhāpagatasaṅkocam | Abhinavaguptahṛdambujametadvicinuta maheśapūjanahetoḥ || 3 If you want to worship Śiva, please pick one by one these lotus petals of the the heart of Abhinavagupta in which contraction has been for ever ended, which has bloomed open through the touch of the rays from the feet of his guru, the revered Sun, Shambhunatha.Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public. This episode concludes our reading of Chapter Four of Abhinavagupta's "Tantrasāra," which we started reading in Episode 16. This part of the śākta-upāya or “Illumination of the Empowered Method” is particularly esoteric, presenting some of the most significant and traditionally secretive teachings of the non-dual Shaiva Tantra tradition. Abhinavagupta explores the various names and aspects of the ultimate principle of reality, described as both transcendent and immanent. He also introduces the three Goddesses of the Trika system, describing how all these aspects are unified under one encompassing Goddess. Listen to this episode as a direct transmission, engaging with the text on a deeper level beyond intellectual explanation. You can read Chapter Fours (Part Two) in these two blogposts one, two. In this special satsangh, we host our mentor and dear friend Pujya Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati of the Kali Mandir, the foremost authority here on the West Coast and perhaps in the world on all things Kali, Tantra and Puja. Some years ago, I asked Pujya Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati at the Kali Mandir in Laguna a beach: “why is it that some people say worshipping Kālī is dangerous?” He said in his characteristic warmth and humor something to the effect of: “worshipping Kali is like mac and cheese. I love Mac and cheese. But if some people eat it, they'll die!” We laughed for a little while and then he proceeded to carefully point out the differences between a Bhakti practice and a properly Tantrik one in approaching Mā. I tell you this story to give you some sense of what kind of teacher Swami Bhajanandaji is: indescribably profound and yet simple, grounded, direct and honest; seriously funny; academically rigorous yet supremely practical…ah how rare is such a person in this world! Most importantly, he is an expert ritualist and so is uniquely able to transmit the Tantras from within the tradition. And now we have the wonderful good fortune of grilling him with questions! Hearing from him is an opportunity that no sincere student of our āgamas would ever want to miss! In a world where the principle Goddesses of the Tantras like Kālī and Tripura Sundarī have moved into a broader devotional context and have attracted a wider audience who for the most part are befuddled by the twilight language of the primary texts, confounded by misinformation and mischief on the internet and bored by the dry academic speculations of secondary sources who take the philosophies out of their original ritual context, Swamis Bhajananandaji and Ambikanandaji and Usha Devī's Kali Mandir are guiding lights of inestimable value. Usha Devī and Swamis Bhajanandaji and Ambikanandaji have been our teachers and dear friends for years now and if ever I have imparted to you any cool Tantrik secrets, I probably got it from them!Check out their work at the Kali Mandir, a temple of the awakened Kali here:https://www.kalimandir.org/Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public. This episode is a scriptural reading and continues our exploration of Abhinavagupta's "Tantrasāra," focusing on Chapter Four, entitled “Illumination of the Empowered Method (śākta-upāya)”. The text is a magnificent description of the śākta-upāyas, the contemplative process that can refine one's understanding of reality, ultimately leading to the experiential realization of one's true nature. The ‘empowered' methods through which ignorance is dissolved are discernment (sat-tarka), teachings from an authentic tradition (sad-āgama), and guidance from a teacher (sad-guru).You can read Chapter Fours (Part One) in three distinct blogposts: blogpost one, two, and three. IMPORTANT NOTE: Abhinavagupta's argument here must be read in its wider context lest we misunderstand him. Clearly, he does believe that yogic practices can indeed support and foster the discerning insight that leads to liberation, for he teaches yogic practices in the very next chapter. But he suggests that those yogic practices must be conjoined with at least a provisional understanding of how they illustrate the nature of Reality.Additionally, in the Tantrāloka, he allows that even when yogic practice does not foster sat-tarka (accurate discernment), it still might be helpful to remove impediments on the path, such as doubt and fear. In Tantrāloka verse 4.98, he writes: “On the other hand, in our view, since [Consciousness] clearly consists of everything, including prāṇa, mind, and body, even practice which remains on those levels can successfully remove impediments [to liberation], just as one who wishes to leap must first overcome fear of falling.”Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. This week's solo episode explores the teaching of the three stages of awakening, or three samāveśas, rooted in the 7th-century Mālinīvijayottaratantra and further elaborated by Abhinavagupta in Tantrasāra. This teaching, preserved both in the scriptures and through oral transmission, clarifies the multifaceted nature of spiritual awakening. Each of three samāveśas, which literally means 'immersion,' represents an immersion into a fundamental aspect of ultimate reality. This episode unpacks these stages to provide a clearer understanding of the spiritual awakening process, which, while not always linear, shares commonalities across different traditions and ways people experience it. One of the central questions we ask in spiritual life is, "what about sexuality?" On one side of the spectrum you have world-negative traditions (which seem to be in the majority in classical times and whose effects can still be felt today) which reject sexuality wholesale and on the other side of that same spectrum you have world-affirming traditions that often get abused as a license for hedonism, mitigating greatly their spiritual value. This second type seems to be on the rise in todays consumerist culture (no surprise there: sex sells!) and this often gets linked to Tantra. So then:Is Tantra really about sex? Like not at all? Not even a little bit?Well, the answer is both yes and no. The answer is very nuanced. And in this discussion, Mā willing, I hope to explore that nuance in several ways. This discussion will take us into the heart of Vedic culture, into the Upanishads, into the Candi, into the Tantras and into the traditions around the Goddess and so I felt like it would be a perfect lecture of this auspicious second day of Navarātri!Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public.

A Prayer to the Goddess | The Four Hymns of the Candi In Sanskrit and Translation

Today on Sārada Devī Jayanti, the auspicious emergence of Holy Mother, I'd like to offer this recitation of the four hymns of the Candi at your feet, you who are Mā embodied. Before each hymn is chanted in Sanskrit and translation, we make a few preliminary remarks about the hymn to contextualize it in the wider narrative of the Candi or Devi Māhātmyam.  These hymns are very powerful. They are charged with unimaginable mantric force! To even listen to them is to affect a profound transformation of our entire being. I pray you will feel the power and poetry of these mantras and be absorbed in the ecstasy of devotion to Mother who is in truth your very own essence. I can't help thinking that is the most wonderful way to start the year. There could not be a better subject to start the year of podcasting off with than this! Jai MāMā Sārada is the total embodiment of the creative energy, śakti, inseperable from non-dual consciousness, śiva. The same snake when wriggling and moving about and hissing is called śakti and when it is still it is called śiva. It is one and the same snake, one and the same reality, and she is That!  She is the Divine Mother of the Universe in every sense of that word. All that Sri Ramakrishna is able to do, she does through him for she is the inseparable power of Ramakrishna, as heat is the inseparable power of fire. I consider her worship the very highest worship! And the most exalted form of that worship is to worship her in the temples of every being, sentient and insentient in this world, as Swami Vivekananda taught. To worship Mā as she is embodied as other people…ah, there is no finer worship than that. But aside from the exalted and refined form of worshipping the Vishvarūpa of Mā in everyone as everyone, the can also do the equally exalted and refined form of worship of Mā in the image as per the injunctions of the Tantras.  I pray to Mā Sarada Devī that She may, through her unconditional grace and limitless mercy, deepen our absorption in worship both inside and outside the temple. May her living presence imbue the image and may that same presence reveal itself in everyone, everywhere! May we feel her in every circumstance and situation in life!  Mā, our play is done! We want to come home and play our heads upon thy lap! Take us in. Remove all our worldly cravings that keep us running about in Thy maya. In vain do we wander thy three worldly! O sorceress and confounder of the universe, by your magic alone is all this play going on! Thou art the one who holds the keys to both liberated and bondage! Therefore, be thou gracious and grant us pure love for thee! May I drink deeply from the cup of thy love's wine that I may come to regard this entire universe and all that live in it as verily my own, as indeed it is. Jai Mā!PS: Although I typically use the Swami Jagadishwaranandaji translations in our talks, in this one I use the Devadatta Kali translation from his excellent book, "In Praise of the Goddess." PSS: We chanted this after a formal worship of Holy Mother and Mā Kālī which you can watch on our Patreon here https://patreon.com/yogawithnish?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkLectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public. Rogue Gurus and Fallen Yogis | How To Practice Guru-Yoga

Guru-Yoga is the central practice of the Tantrik tradition. In fact, I would go so far as to say that in any genuine mystical tradition, the role of a living teacher is highly emphasized: in Christian mysticism, its the spiritual perception/director/elder; in Sufism its the Affendi; in Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism its the Guru.  My guru likes to say: the human Guru is a matchmaker who marries you to God, who alone is the Guru, and Who, in Truth is what You are at the essence of your Being.   Yes, the Guru is certainly IN you AS you but long before you can benefit from inner direction, you'll need a human teacher to mirror for you, model for you and instruct you in spiritual life.  Like with all things in life, we need teachers.   But what qualifies a person to become a spiritual teacher?   Some time ago, we had a talk where we explored Swami Vivekananda's criterion for a genuine teacher that appears in the Bhakti Yoga book. And long before that, on Guru Purnima some years ago, we offered a lecture on Guru Yoga in general where we explored a few Tantras like the Kula-Arnava Tantra to get a sense for what guruhood really is according to the Tantrik traditionSince Guru Purnima is coming up yet again, I thought it'd be nice to revisit that discussion, especially since last week we had such an extension discussion on the importance of shāstra, scriptures and also since we're currently discussing the Nārada Bhakti Sutra in which we find this profound set of verses:भवतु न चयदा  याद ू व शा  र णम्। १३  "Until one is unshakeably enlightened, one should follow the scriptures." (12) "Otherwise, there is a fear of fall (from spiritual life)." (13)  What does it mean to "fall"? In this talk, I make the case that "falling" for both a practitioner and a more importantly, a practitioner who teaches others is non-adherence to or general disrespect/irreverence for the tradition's scriptures. Remember, this conversation is the follow up to last week's discussion on the importance of scripture (which features a very clear definition of what we mean by "scripture")This is one lecture in a series on the Nārada Bhakti Sutra which you can follow along with hereThese classes meet live every Friday evening at 6pm PST via this zoom link: https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: Support the show

The maxim, “Don't miss the forest for the trees” reminds us not to forget the big picture while we move through life's details, and has been a prevailing message in the preface to the Vijnana Bhairava— don't get too caught up in the technique, the path, and forget the goal. And the opposite also holds true— don't miss the trees for the forest— meaning, don't get so caught up in your study of the forest that you stop taking hikes and enjoying the forest. Don't get so star struck by the goal of meditation that you stop participating and growing through your life's karmic equation. Shiva and Shakti are these two inseparable sides of the same coin, Shiva is the ‘forest' you could say, a static concept that pervades our life fully, yet is not itself a physical aspect. And Shakti is the ‘trees', the infinite ways that the forest manifests all around us. Our goal, as yogis, is not to miss the forest or the trees, to participate in our lives fully while maintaining awareness of the goal in our hearts. Yoga means union, and this experience of union is the work of our practice. The Rudramalaya Tantra, the text in which the Vijnana Bhairava is situated, can be literally translated as ‘the union between shiva and Shakti', and this union is at the heart of the teachings in this preface. This union we seek is a dynamic experience, beyond the realm of thought yet directly experienceable in the form of our practice. For example, the breath is moving in and out of all the time. This is an example of Shakti, the movement of our life force. If we walk this path of Shakti skillfully, we will simultaneously experience the path and the destination— we will feel the breath (the path), and the present (the destination), together in unity. So even in the simplest practice of watching our breath do we have a direct experience of the unity of non-difference “dawning upon us” as JDS described it in the last section. As we move into quotes and the text, try to feel this union within you. You are listening and learning, yet simultaneously you are feeling your heart and the breath in the present. You are whole, and yet you are studying the parts and learning how to be ‘more whole', at the same time. You are on the path and destination simultaneously. Verse 17: “this state of Bhairava, which is sung in the Tantras, is really the supreme state of the Goddess, Pārvatī. But is there any difference of supremacy? Is there a difference of supreme-ness between Lord Śiva and Pārvatī?”Intro to KS: “[Shiva and Shakti] are consciousness and the power of consciousness. They appear simultaneously and are eternally related…The subject and object must be considered separately for the purpose of explanation, but it should always be remembered that both are present simultaneously. One is always predominant in the same way that a coin has two sides which can be seen, but only one at a time. These two factors are the first two tattvas in the process of cosmic evolution and are technically called the Shiva Tattva and the Shakti Tattva.”Verse 18: Since there is always non-difference between Sakti and possessor of sakti (Saktimän) therefore being endowed with His attributes Sakti becomes the bearer of the same attributes. Therefore being non-different from para (the highest i.e. Bhairava) she is known as para (the highest i.e. Bhairavi). “Because, for instance, when there is fire, its energy can be for burning, cooking, or lighting a room. All these energies are owned by fire, but those energies– lightening, giving light, burning, heating— but these energies are undifferentiated with fire. These energies are not different from fire…It is just to enter in that state of fire, i.e., to put a kettle on it…So, [in the same way], [the path of shakti] is to enter in the state of Lord Śiva.”Guru Gita Verse 97: Idam Eva Shivam, Tvidam Eva Shivam, Tvidam Eva Shivam, Tvidam Eva Shivam. Mama Shasanato, Mama Shasanato, Mama Shasanato, Mama ShasanataIndeed, this is Shiva. Indeed, this too, is Shiva. Indeed, this too, is Shiva. Indeed, this too, is Shiva. This is my teaching. This is my teaching. This is my teaching. This is my teaching. Journal Prompt: When do you need help remembering that “This too is Shiva in your day and practice?”

For episode #2 of season 2 we are joined by author and journalist Mike Magee. Mike Magee is a well-known name to lovers and practitioners of Tantra to whom he has offered for decades the essential, condensed contents of many Tantras of the medieval period. This book is a fruit of his maturity and vast experience. Containing reliable translations and many Kālī Vidyàs, it is a valuable manual for practitioners and an important source for scholars. Magee has written since the 1960s on matters related to occult and esoteric religions. In 1971 he started a small occult magazine called Azoth, and in 1973 in conjunction with David Hall, and his girlfriend Janet Bailey, started a more ambitious six monthly magazine called SOTHiS. In 1978, he went to India and met with an English tantrik guru (and former student of Aleister Crowley) called HH Shri Gurudev Mahendranath (1911–1992) who was a guru of the Uttarakaula Tantric Order of northern India. Mahendranath gave him the title of a guru and a charter to form a group of students. Magee took the tantrik name of Lokanath. Later this was to become a nucleus for the "Arcane Magical Order of the Knights of Shambhala" (AMOOKOS). This group was highly influential, particularly in the way it brought Tantrik teachings to the West. Kali Magic brings together Mike Magee's decades of experience in translating and elucidating tantrik texts. The first section—Sadhana—explores the ritual worship of Kali through mantra, her various aspects, and her yantras. The second section—Tantras—includes new English translations of the Matrkabheda, Todala, and Yoni tantras, plus two Kali Upaniṣads and abstracts of ten tantras related to the worship of the goddess. With a comprehensive bibliography and glossary of key terms, Kali Magic will be of great value to devotees and scholars of the goddess alike. In the Plus show we discuss some of the rituals in Kali magic in relation to Western Ritual magic. We go through how Kali represents the killing of Ego. Tantra the similarity between sex and death. The importance of waking up. And how Mike sourced the materials found in the book. Michael Slouber's Early Tantric Medicine: Snakebite, Mantras, and Healing in the Garuda Tantras (Oxford UP, 2016) looks at a traditional medical system that flourished over 1,000 years ago in India. The volume brings to life this rich tradition in which knowledge and faith are harnessed in complex visualizations accompanied by secret mantras to an array of gods and goddesses; this religious system is combined with herbal medicine and a fascinating mixof lore on snakes, astrology, and healing. The book's appendices include an accurate, yet readable translation of ten chapters of the most significant Tantric medical text to be recovered: the Kriyakalagunottara.  On the auspicious occasion of Navaratri, we launch into an exploration of Shakti, the Divine Goddess of the Tantras. By Her grace I hope to share with you some deep insights from Ramprasad, Ramakrishna and Vivekananda regarding the worship of Ma and its important in spiritual life. I am going to take an approach that is entirely like Ramanuja in that I will attempt to show, by Her grace, how we can use Jnana, Raja and Karma Yoga to attain to Bhakti Yoga, the highest. Faith and devotion. These alone are everything. But do they come easily and naturally? Hardly! We'll discuss Bhakti for those to whom Bhakti does not come naturally. It does not come naturally to anyone and those who say they they have it might only be making pretences! Who can truly Love the way a devotee loves?! May tonight's lecture address that directly! We'll discuss how the Motherhood of God offers a unique opportunity to deepen Bhakti. All this is Her play."Mother! Mother! My boat is sinking, here in the ocean of this world;Fiercely the hurricane of delusion rages on every side!Clumsy is my helmsman, the mind;Stubborn my six oarsmen, the passions;Into a pitiless wind I sailed my boat and nowIt is sinking!Split is the rudder of devotion;Tattered is the sail of faith;Into my boat the waters are pouring in!Tell me, what shall I do?For with my failing eyes, alas! Nothing but darkness do I see. Here in the waves I will swim, O MotherAnd cling to the raft of thy name!"- Swami Nikhilananda's translation of Ramprasad. This is the follow up discussion: How To Connect to Ma Kalihttps://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-connect-q-72564494?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator00:00:00 The Most Fascinating Icon of India00:03:00 What Today's Lecture Is About00:05:58 Swami Vivekananda's Early Experiences of Ma Kali00:22:25 Swami Vivekananda's Endorsement of Mother Worship00:34:13 Introducing Prakriti: The 24 Cosmic Principles00:47:49 Purusha: The Pure Spirit00:50:20 Shiva-Shakti 00:52:24 Why Does Prakriti Create?00:55:12 Moksha and the Movies: The Aesthetic Theory of Shaivism00:59:18 The Two Gifts of Ma Prakriti: Bhoga and Yoga01:08:21 Prakriti as Maha Mayi as Mother01:15:25 How Do I Get Bhakti: Love for God?01:19:44 Why Does Ma Kali Look So Terrifying? 01:21:22 Sri Ramakrishna on How To Realise God (Hint: Worship Mother!)01:28:27 Ramprasad's Poems on Kali01:37:46 Closing PoemSupport the show
