This week's guest is Cadell Last, the creator of Philosophy Portal, author of Global Brain Singularity and Real Speculations, and organizer of myriad conferences, anthologies, and collaborative volumes exploring biocultural evolution, the mind-matter relation, and speculative futures. Cadell has been the director of psychedelic research at Psirenity, a researcher at the Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science, a science writer on primatology and paleoanthropology for Scientific American, and the founder, writer, and researcher for The Advanced Apes at PBS Digital Studios. In this episode, we discuss self-actualization and self-transformation in our age of magical technologies — the domestication of the human being by AI and institutions, how to live in a future of hyper-social neuroplasticity, navigating hybrid physical-virtual relationships, the importance of intergenerational learning, and how we can make a better argument for culture to the social systems that only perceive measurable value. In the climax of this conversation, Cadell makes a case for “staying with the lack” and “working the cracks in being” as ways of cultivating our agency in a highly-automated world.Become a member to join our hangouts, salons, and study groups:Project Links• Explore this project's essay and episode archives• Make tax-deductible donations (recurring pledges grant membership)• Join the Wisdom x Technology & Future Fossils Discord servers• Browse the books we discuss on the show• Explore the interactive model grown from over 250 episodes• Book me for speaking or consultingCadell's LinksWebsite (with research and social media links)Philosophy PortalYouTube(+ My recent appearance as a guest on Cadell's Philosophy Portal show)Relevant PapersHuman Evolution: Life History Theory and the End of Biological ReproductionSelf Actualization in the CommonsGlobal Commons in the Global BrainGlobal Brain and the Future of Human SocietyInformation-Energy Metasystem ModelAbstraction, mimesis and the evolution of deep learningLandian Exit and Hegelian LoveSystems & Subjects: Thinking the Foundations of Science & PhilosophyLogic for the Global Brain: Singular Universality as Perfect OppositionMentionsKevin KellyLawrence SteinbergNick LandNora BatesonJessica FlackThomas PicketyMichel BauwensLayman PascalDavid JayPhilip K. The theme of day one is on Timenergy and The Commons. In the same way that Žižek talks about how a concept can evolve just in how it gets applied to something, likewise I would say that timenergy theory evolves in this event because of three factors: 1. New audience (it always takes on some new clarity with new audiences), 2. Bringing it expressly into dialogue with the commons, which I have never tarried with… I do get into it elsewhere, but never in a sustained engagement… the particularity of this audience, specifically the work that Joris is doing, helped me clarify the difference between The Commons and a commons. Conceptualizing timenergy in relation to The Commons as opposed to a commons is a fruitful contradiction I look forward to getting into more in the future. Especially how I quilt the whole thing by saying that necessary labor is part of the commons. 3rd, and lastly, Owen Cox and Raven of the Dark Renaissance were there. This was only seven or so hours after I had published my response to Cox's manifesto titled The Paglian Right. So while timenergy and the Commons is the explicit theme, this making myself intelligible to Owen and Raven in light of their engagement with our talks becomes a big part of the rest of this event and the following day. What is it we are doing? How does it relate to things people care about now? Why is Theory Underground so hard to make sense of within the existing framework of assumptions embedded in political subjectivities today? A conversation worth waiting for with philosopher Cadell Last diving into themes he began developing in a published trialogue 'Sex, Masculinity and God' (2020). We wrestle with the confusion of contemporary landscape as men, delving into the disorientation of radical historical changes in life, sex, work and identity. We further the 'wrestling with christianity' conversation with Cadell's deep reading of the signficance of the cross for men around the initiatory dying into life. How can men's death and resurrection resolve the culture war? What will christianity be in it's 3rd millennium? What is the fundamental ‘negativity' and dissolution at the heart of the feminine?
A discussion of Mark Murphy's new book "The Direction of Desire: John of the Cross, Jacques Lacan and the Contemporary Understanding of Spiritual Direction" with Andrew Flores, David Roberts, Luke Grote, and Cadell Last.

This podcast attempts to help us understand the philosophy of Hegel by demystifying Hegel's confusing Terminology in works such as The Phenomenology of Spirit and The Science of Logic. I ask Cadell to break down some of Hegel's key concepts, such as dialectics, spirit, negation, sublation, self-consciousness, absolute knowing, the evolution of human reason and the philosophy of history. We also discuss how Hegel's ideas are relevant to politics, religion, and the practice of learning how to think itself. 00:00 Introduction 01:41 Why Study Hegel? 06:44 Dialectics and Contradiction 14:51 The Evolution of Human Reason 18:55 Hegel's Concept of Spirit 53:03 Hegel's God 59:15 Christian Atheism 01:12:51 Zizek, Lacan and Hegel 01:33:39 Sublation 01:52:49 The Absolute and Absolute Knowing 01:58:41 Hegel vs Nietzche and Deleuze 02:09:46 Religion and Ideology Check out 1Dime's videos if you haven't already: https://www.youtube.com/@1Dimee/ Become a Patron at Patreon.com/OneDime to support the show Be sure to give 1Dime Radio a 5-star rating if you enjoyed!

This was a talk as part of an event to mark the launch of a zine from Everyday Analysis on Religion, Marxism and Psychoanalysis. Everyday Analysis produces digital interventions that aim to tactically sabotage the prevailing ideological edifice in the name of a negative universal that undermines identitarian discourse. This latest publication marks their first printed intervention and features articles by Slavoj Žižek, Peter Rollins, Cadell Last, Julie Reshe, Matt McManus and Mark Murphy. In this talk I outline what I argue in the zine.
Dr. Cadell Last is a philosopher interested in the greatest intellectual works with the aim of bringing the mysteries of these works into a personal engagement for the life of the mind. In this conversation, we explore his article on Peter Rollins and pyrotheology. We also discuss the connections between psychoanalysis and Nietzsche.
Layman meets with Dr. Cadell Last to talk about a new philosophy anthology that Cadell co-edited with O.G. Rose, and to which Layman contributed as well: Abyssal Arrows: Spiritual Leadership Inspired by Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Through a review of a number of the essays in this volume, they explore the potential meanings and implications of the notion of Übermensch, especially in our times; the shamanic and tantric dimensions of Nietzsche's thought; the dynamics and scope of Nietzschean education; the relevance of Nietzschean spiritual transformation and leadership in a time of AI and VR; the importance of family and childhood, often missed by revolutionary humanist and transhumanist movements; and much more. Cadell Last, Ph.D., is a philosopher with an interest in anthropology and psychoanalysis, the creator of Philosophy Portal, and the author of Global Brain Singularity; Sex, Masculinity, God; Systems and Subjects; and Enter the Alien.
The one and only Cadell Last joins the show to tell us something about Lacan and his Ecrits. Cadell is anthropologist (M.Sc.) and philosopher (Ph.D.) with an interest in biocultural evolution, mind-matter relation, speculative futures, Hegel and Lacan. He offers now a course on Lacan on his Philosophy Portral. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcast-c709ee4/message

Žižek came under harsh criticism this week. This happens every couple years. Usually the theory people in academia just tuck their heads down and keep on trucking. But not us. The Young Žižekians assemble to set the record straight. Not because we think he needs us to, but because we, as four vocal supporters doing public and independent philosophy, feel the need to make sure anyone new to theory doesn't get our reasons or interest twisted. We love Žižek, but that does not mean he is beyond criticism. It is just a sad reality that the "criticism" aimed at him is not of quality. Exploring the relations between novelty and lineage, religion and spirituality, reason, spirit, and knowing -- a philosophical dialogue with Cadell Last and Tim Adalin. A good battle with words on my part here. I hope the whole is useful! He is author of Global Brain Singularity, which focuses on the nature of temporality and the future of consciousness; and Sex, Masculinity, God, which focuses on the consequences of libidinal energy, gender identity and theological mysteries for our knowledge constructs. The tension between sex and love, as well as death and immortality, drives much of his current philosophical work, which is deeply informed by dialectics and psychoanalysis. His next course through Philosophy Portal is on Hegel's Science of Logic and begins January 16 2023 @ https://philosophyportal.online/ Tim is the producer of Voicecraft. He is a philosopher whose work focuses on the relation between participation and transformation, and integrates metaphysical and scientific modes of understanding. The primary medium of this work lives in embodied relationality with friends, family, and peers. He is concerned with the vital connections between psyche, culture, and nature, and is developing networks and communities that support wiser contexts for education, contribution, and belonging.

Cadell Last is a mensch. An extra-academic PhD philosopher with the mentality of an athlete. He takes embodied integrity seriously and teaches in a disarmingly practical, personal manner. He'll rarely share a philosophical idea without describing how it personally changed his life.He also has a formal background in anthropology, history and psychoanalysis. He's on a deep spiritual and analytical inquiry, which includes psychoanalysis, men's work, circling, and the realization of how sexual energy informs knowing. Topics include:Why “the personal is universal” and also the best way to learn philosophy. Why you should never trust a thought you have indoors. How sexual energy informs knowing. What Nietzsche meant by The Last Man, why he's arrived and why you now must take cold showers. What it means to be an Overman/Übermensch.Psychoanalytic descriptions of masculinity and femininity. Cadell Last is a philosopher exploring the curiosities of humanity. You can find out more about him at his webpage, his youtube channel. If you're listening to this in summer of 2022 he's also launching an online course on Thus spoke Zarathustra (Philosophy portal). This conversation is a walk though of the negative principle where we explore what it and our blindness to it has to tell us about what we see in the world today. We also slip into the topic of the libidinal economy - that our sexuality seeps into our economies, both those aspects we desire and what we try to not look at. It is an exercise of grounding philosophy and looking at how the big ideas move us in the world. We also touch on the masculine and the feminine and what possibility an integrated negative holds for those energies. Enjoy!
I have always wanted to discuss Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy and how it relates to technology and transhumanism. The problem is that a very short list of people will make me enjoy such a challenging conversation. Luckily, Dr. Cadell Last is among the top on that shortlist. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as […]
Cadell Last's THUS SPOKE ZARATHUSTRA COURSE STARTS JULY 14TH 2022 Sing up here: https://www.philosophyportal.online/ Cadell introduces the explosive text known as Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Frederic Nietzche. About Cadell: "I am a philosopher interested in interpreting and communicating the greatest philosophical works with the aim of bringing these works into a practical engagement for the life of the mind. I believe the most important challenge for the human mind today is reconciling itself with itself, that is the body and society that has been given to it through historical contingency. From this spiritual reconciliation we do not get an end to tension or conflict, but a capacity to posit new necessities which may lead to even more interesting and intelligent tension or conflict. Here my work to this point has focused on highlighting specific great minds and the totality of their body of work. These minds were selected because I believe they are essential for reconciling the mind with historical contingency and the development of new necessities. You can find a course on the work of Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, as well as a course on the work of Georg Hegel, and specifically the Phenomenology of Spirit, as it may be the most important philosophical text of the modern age." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/podcast-c709ee4/message

In this special Integral Stage episode, Layman Pascal is joined by Cadell Last to inquire into the concept of self-relating negativity; the place of lack and the 'gap' in our thinking; the importance of Hegelian and Zizekian perspectives for emerging integrative and metamodern worldviews; the status and problem of the "One"; the question of suffering and our relationship to psychopathology and the symptom; Osho, mysticism and psychospiritual development; and much more. About the Strange Attractor Series In the last couple of years, we have witnessed the emergence of different meta-models, theories, and future visions which try to go beyond the worldview of postmodernism: a strange attractor that seems to run on new and exciting algorithms. But what—if anything—do all of these models and movements have in common? Is there a shared deep-structure that is expressing itself, not only in new and more complex ways of thinking and cognition, but also in geopolitics, science, industry, religion, ecology, sexuality, parenting, culture, technology, architecture, the arts—and in every other area of contemporary life. Is there a strange attractor that emerges after postmodernity? What are its shape and characteristics? What new and exciting vistas and opportunities do these new vistas open up for us? Can they contribute to solving the existential problems of the current meta-crisis? What are the moral and ethical injunctions that we could infer from the present emergence of these meta-tribes. In this Roundtable-series - hosted by PARALLAX - we invite a multitude of ‘post-postmodern' pioneer—thinkers, psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, educators, economists, and artists—to have an interdisciplinary discussion about the essence of Post-Postmodernity – given there is such a thing. More precisely, this podcast-series is an experiment which seeks to find out whether these movements and models after Postmodernity have something in common. Can these movements leave their respective bubbles and contribute something essential to the development of the world we live in? That is our primary question. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/podcast-c709ee4/message
Cadell Last and Owen Cox are launching a new project in January in collaboration with Maniphesto, called The Art of Being a Man. https://maniphestocore.com/art-of-being-a-man/ We have both been doing men's work together for some time, as well as exploring questions of contemporary culture and masculinity on our YouTube channels and in other creative work (for instance, Cadell's book Sex, Masculinity, God, coauthored with Daniel Dick and Kevin Orosz). We wanted to create a type of men's work that expresses our shared interest in existential questions, continental philosophy, and Freudian psychoanalysis (and Heavy Metal and Hip Hop music). The idea with the Art of Being a Man was to create a series of workshops to explore elements of the psyche that are often overlooked, ignored, repressed or experienced as "problems to solve". Our intention is to lead a group of men in spending time with these parts of our selves, exploring what they mean, what we can learn from them, how we can draw inspiration and strength from them - in short, to see if we can live more artfully with all parts of our selves, and sublimate the forces that move through us for expression in our creative work. The topics we will cover in our workshops will be: Pleasure and Infantile Drives (Kill, Eat, Fuck) Adult Eroticism and Sexuality Melancholy and Depression Power Death Love and Community Creativity and Art The idea is that we begin with the early beginnings of the psyche, the drives that we are created with, and slowly move through to our own ability to express ourselves and influence the world around us. In addition to the core workshops, there will be a facilitated community platform, optional "homework" exercises and prompts for those who want to go deeper into the material, and optional extra community calls or 1on1 support. The course will begin on Sunday 16th January and run on alternative Sundays through to 8th May. Each workshop will last 5 hours, with an hour break in the middle. They will start at 4pm CET, 3pm GMT, 10am EST. If you're interested, check out the links below,. You can sign up by following the Maniphesto link. The second of four explorations into the philosophy of lack w/ philosophers Cadell Last, Alex Ebert, O.G. Rose & Tim Adalin. Recorded mid July 2021. As introduced by Cadell: "We started our first discourse on lack in the context of the origin of philosophy in the Parmenidean presupposition of absolute being banishing the void; and its relationship to the emergence of psychoanalysis as a discipline that operates by necessity in the void of subjectivity. In our second discourse, I propose to shift our context to Democritus, and his atomist ontology, which we may say is the spontaneous unofficial metaphysics of scientific materialism (i.e. the universe at base is divided between indivisible somethings and nothing (“the void”). However, the complimentary opposite of atoms, the void, is often left unthought by scientific materialists, leaving open-ended the philosophical consequences of a presence that depends on absence. For Democritus, a presence that depends on absence signifies an important distinction vis-a-vis thinking “the real” (or fundamental reality), namely, that the most essential cannot be either a being (atoms, something), and neither can it be a non-being (void, nothing), but a paradox of the two. He referred to this paradox of the two as a “not-nothing”, or what we might call “Lack”. What does thinking Lack as a fundamental reality mean for scientific materialism?" The first of four explorations into the philosophy of lack w/ philosophers Cadell Last, Alex Ebert, O.G. Rose & Tim Adalin. As introduced by Cadell: "Philosophy is a discipline classically concerned with "Being", or the presence of Something. Why is there Something rather than Nothing? However, after more than a century of psychoanalysis, we may say that the human subject is an entity of Lack, or that Lacks. Thus, the human subject is a Being constituted by a contradictory identity, constantly attempting to fill in the persistent feeling that there is "Something missing". In this conversation series, we seek to enquire deeper about the experience and the philosophy of Lack, and ultimately, what such a philosophy might say about our contemporary culture. Why is there Nothing rather than Something?"
