Welcome to the Psychedelic Conversations Podcast!Episode 156:In this episode, we explore the powerful concept of "Endarkenment" with philosopher Alexander Bard and artist Owen Cox. Together, we dive deep into the cultural, historical, and spiritual forces shaping modern psychedelic and artistic movements, including the emergence of a "Dark Renaissance." We unpack Britain's unique relationship with psychedelics, reflect on the decline of urban centers, and question conventional spirituality through the lens of shadow, myth, and radical transformation. From cybernetics to Celtic paganism, from Zoroastrian insights to gender dynamics in spiritual practice—this is a rich, unfiltered dialogue about embracing the darkness as a necessary path toward true integration and awakening. Join us for this provocative and inspiring conversation that challenges mainstream narratives and opens new portals of thought.About Alex:Alexander Bard is a philosopher, artist, songwriter and music producer, author of six books with Jan Söderqvist, living in Stockholm, Sweden. Bard built his career as a philosopher in parallel with a highly successful 25-years-plus career in the international music industry. Bard & Söderqvist's philosophy concentrates on the relationship between human beings and technology, using human beings as the constant throughout civilization, with technology as the ever faster changing variable. Their work takes inspiration from thinkers like Hegel, Nietzsche, Whitehead, Deleuze, and Eastern philosophy and spirituality, in the latter case adding Persia to the well known triad of India, China and Japan. They are convinced philosophy will be the last human activity to ever be affected by AI.About Owen:Owen Cox is a British artist and one of the creative leaders of the Dark Renaissance. He works primarily with text, music and more recently theatre, weaving themes of body horror, esotericism, classical culture and electronic media. Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research! #ICPR24 In this episode of Psychedelic Conversations, I sit down with Cody Wenthur, an assistant professor from the University of Wisconsin's School of Pharmacy. Recorded at the ICPR 24 conference in Haarlem, Netherlands, we delve into Cody's motivations for entering the psychedelic research field, driven by his fascination with how small molecules can significantly alter human behavior. We explore the unique master's program at his school, which focuses on psychoactive pharmaceutical investigation, preparing students to navigate the regulatory process for brain-active molecules. Cody shares insights from the conference, discusses regulatory developments in Europe, and highlights the importance of education in advancing the field of psychedelic studies. Join us for an enlightening discussion on the intersections of science, education, and psychedelics. About Cody: From his earliest days in the laboratory, he's been particularly interested in questions that give a better picture of how the brain turns external stimuli into lasting decisions and driven by the vision of using the answers to try to improve human mental health. Cody honed this translational ethos during his training at Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Scripps, which included clinical work in inpatient psychiatric units, mechanistically novel academic drug discovery efforts, and the search for biomarkers of response to vaccines directed against abusable psychoactive substances. Cody is directing a group of talented, curious individuals from both clinical and basic science backgrounds, and he is relishing the unexpected insights and challenges that arise as he works through forward-looking problems at the interface of chemistry, neuroscience, physiology, and pharmacology. Whether through development of vaccines directed against synthetic psychoactive drugs, pharmacologic dissection of rapidly acting antidepressant activity, or manipulation of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy context, current projects in his lab ultimately focus on maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harms arising from chemically induced mechanisms of long-term behavioral change. The inception of Reunion traces back to Wells' personal journey. Over his career, he established multiple successful companies, driven more by a determination to prove his worth than by sheer brilliance. This relentless pursuit of achievement, however, came at great personal sacrifice. A pivotal moment came somewhat unexpectedly when he had the opportunity to experience Ayahuasca, leading to a profound transformation in his outlook on life, business, and his own self-perception. This encounter with plant medicine set him on an incredible, challenging, yet ultimately rewarding path. Wells learned that living authentically sometimes necessitates making difficult decisions for the sake of healing one's soul. His experiences enabled him to embrace his identity as a gay man—a truth he had long acknowledged but deeply suppressed. Opting to live more authentically, he came out, which led to significant changes in his life. He sold his company, ended his 25-year marriage amicably, and founded Reunion. Through establishing this retreat center, he has been able to apply the insights gained from his business career in a manner that eschews profit as the primary focus, instead finding great purpose and meaning. Reunion's mission is to provide those seeking personal growth, self-acceptance, and healing with the opportunities and experiences necessary to foster positive change within themselves and, by extension, in the world. Wells has created a welcoming space at Reunion for everyone who wishes to ignite a new chapter in their life.
