Fresh out of the studio and we hit our 500th episode milestone, guest host Yana Fry from Yana TV turns the tables on Bernard Leong, CEO of Dorje AI and host of Analyse Asia, in a special ask-me-anything format. We start with Bernard's journey from finding his first guest to navigating 11 years of podcasting, revealing his 12-word life philosophy: "Learn from everyone, follow no one, observe the patterns, work like hell." Following on, Bernard shares how his theoretical physics background provides the tools on everything from digital transformation to building Dorje AI's vision of reimagining ERP systems. The conversation dives deep into Bernard's pragmatic idealist worldview, product management philosophy and focus on the future. Bernard announces a major rebrand: Analyse Asia is dropping "Asia" to become the Analyse Podcast as it expands to a global audience, marking a new chapter in the show's evolution."For Dorje AI, what great looks like is being able to solve the ERP problem for businesses. It could take five years, ten years, or even two decades — because every technology adoption cycle takes time. We're at the beginning of a massive shift, but many still cling to the old ways of doing things. The one thing I've learned about digital transformation is this: everyone loves transformation, but they hate to change. Everything that people say will happen in two years usually takes five. When I think about Analyse Asia, greatness for me is being able to do an interview without looking at a set of questions — to tease out a guest's story authentically, without prejudice, without being a fanboy. Just getting the story out. If I can do that, that's great. Of course, hitting a million subscribers would be fantastic — that's the next milestone I'm chasing. But for me, it's always: ‘I've reached this milestone — what's next?'When you think about frugality at the highest level, it's not about resources — it's about time. The real measure is how much time you can spend doing what truly matters. That's what great looks like for me: asking, what's the minimum amount of time I can make the maximum impact? Maybe I'll never fully get there. But if we can say we lived this life without regret — that's enough." - Bernard LeongEpisode Highlights:[00:00] Quote of the Day by Bernard Leong[01:00] Introduction: Yana Fry (Guest Host) and Bernard Leong[02:05] Early Days of Analyse Asia Finding first guest was biggest initial challenge[04:30] Looking at Everything from a corporate executive like a theoretical physicist[06:23] Podcast interviews are combinations of science and art[08:19] Pragmatic idealist philosophy shapes Bernard's worldview[10:17] 12 Word Advice: Learn from Everyone, Follow No One, Observe the Patterns & Work like Hell[13:00] Dorje AI solving fundamental ERP ledger problems[16:15] Attacking competitors' strongest strength - Lessons of history from Kublai Khan[21:34] New is Easy and Right is Hard for Product Management[24:00] Audio to video was hardest podcast pivot[29:25] Japanese craftsman approach keeps Bernard going[33:09] Analyse Asia rebranding to Analyse Podcast globally[39:55] Father's 50-year loyalty shaped Bernard's management philosophy[44:00] Asia is diverse cities, not monolithic continent[46:00] Most problems aren't AI problems after questioning[51:00] What does Great Look Like for Dorje AI, Analyse Asia and Bernard Leong?[52:10] ClosingProfile: - Bernard Leong, Host of Analyse Asia Podcast, CEO of Dorje AI https://dorje.ai, Adjunct Associate Professor from NUS Business School & Institute of Systems Science. - Guest Host: Yana Fry from  @yanatvsg  which we highly recommend and subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/@yanatvsgLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yanafry/Podcast Information: Bernard Leong hosts and produces the show. Why This Episode Is a Must-Watch Are your investments truly aligned with your values? In this episode of Inspired Money, host Andy Wang sits down with leading thinkers and practitioners in sustainable and ethical investing to challenge the traditional focus on returns alone. If you've ever wondered whether your money can “do well and do good,” this conversation is packed with fresh perspectives, actionable strategies, and a transparent look at mindful investing, including how to spot (and avoid) greenwashing. Whether you're a finance professional, a seasoned investor, or just getting started, this episode will change how you think about where your money goes—and the impact it creates. Meet the Expert Panelists John Streur is Chief Investment Officer of All Material Risk Investment Strategies (AMRIS) at Boston Common Asset Management and a recognized leader in sustainable investing. As former President and CEO of Calvert Research and Management, he advanced ESG integration through innovations like the Calvert Principles, Calvert Research System, and Calvert Indices, while guiding the firm's AUM growth from $11 billion to over $40 billion. https://bostoncommonasset.com Kristin Hull, Ph.D., is the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Nia Impact Capital, where she pioneers values-aligned investing with a focus on social justice, environmental sustainability, and gender equity. A former educator turned impact investing leader, she is devoted to transforming finance to better serve people and the planet. https://www.niaimpactcapital.com Manel Pretel-Wilson, Ph.D., is a social entrepreneur and systems thinker with senior leadership experience in innovation and sustainability. He holds degrees in Business Studies and Philosophy, master's degrees in International Relations and Sustainability, a PhD in Systems Science, and is the author of the forthcoming book The Ethics of Human Systems: Creating Economic Value with Impact for Good (August 2025), which explores integrating ethics deeply into economics and impact investing. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Manel-Pretel-Wilson Key Highlights Rethinking Risk and Opportunity with ESG John Streur discussed how integrating ESG data uncovers risks and opportunities often missed by traditional analysis. He explained, “Including this information broadly should result in a much better understanding of the company…what is their ability to manage their impact on the environment? What is their ability to create a great workplace for men and women and people of all backgrounds?” Purpose-Driven Portfolios Start with Value Alignment Kristin Hull shared her journey from high-frequency trading to purpose-aligned investing—emphasizing that investors, big and small, shape the economy by where they put their capital. By focusing on solution-driven companies and evaluating both risks and opportunities, Kristin's approach helps investors build portfolios that reflect their ethics and financial goals. Ethics as the Foundation of Impact Dr. Manel Pretel-Wilson made a compelling case for putting ethics at the core of investment strategies, not just screening out negatives. “By pursuing a good purpose that realizes value, you're already leaving behind all the other [counter values].” He advocates for frameworks that measure both realized values and counter values, urging investors to see ethical impact as central to value creation. Greenwashing: How to Spot It and What to Do The panel addressed the rise in shallow ESG claims and shared concrete tips for investors to move beyond the marketing to find authentic impact. Kristin noted the importance of examining sources of revenue and measurable commitments, while John highlighted the value of analyzing regulatory filings and third-party verification. Call-to-Action Here's one thing you can do this week, because positive change requires action. Take a look at one investment you hold and ask yourself, “Does this align with my values?” Dig in. Look beyond the ticker. Who's leading the company? What do they stand for? What's their environmental and social footprint? That one moment of curiosity might just spark a broader shift in how you view and shape your portfolio. Is a Politics of Higher Consciousness, Wholeness, and Love Possible? At the moment, very few are anticipating the advent of a higher political consciousness. How can they be? The US has just joined Russia, North Korea, and Belarus in refusing to condemn aggression on Ukraine, or even to admit it occurred at all. Many Americans and former allies are increasingly fearful that the United States is itself becoming an authoritarian state, joining a wave of authoritarianism sweeping the globe. Such as fear is compellingly real. At the same time, America's sacred intent of unity in diversity, originally inspired by Native America and embodied in the motto E Pluribus Unum, is still attainable. Which way will the United States go? Will it completely devolve into a totalitarian regime, putting the entire world at risk, or will it return to its original sacred purpose of inclusivity and wholeness, even love?   To better understand the future, we must examine our past assumptions. It is these unexamined, tacit assumptions that have created our present day reality, often preventing us from realizing our highest aspirations. In this podcast, we will unearth the limits of the mainstream scientific paradigm that sees humanity as separate from nature, and instead reimagine a world that is interconnected, whole, and complete. Life does not have to be seen as a win/lose competition where only the fittest survive, vying for control of limited resources. There is a better and more accurate way to practice politics: as consciousness, collaboration, unity in diversity, even love. Join us on the next episode of the Circle for Original Thinking podcast.   Chantal Garneau lives within the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Credit River watershed, in Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. As a dedicated Municipal Councillor, environmental advocate, and meditation artist, she weaves together community, ecology, and mindfulness. Chantal's belief in the integrity of complex systems and the power of diversity is the heartbeat of her work. Her mission to restore connections to self, community, and the web of life inspires trust, collaboration, and a shared vision for a world where every relationship is nurtured with care and intention.Alexander Laszlo resides in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and works as President of the Board of Directors of the Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science, Director of Research at the Laszlo Institute of New Paradigm Research, and Professor of Human and Organizational Development at Fielding Graduate University. Alexander's current research interests include the embodied aspects of science and spirituality as a living field of consciousness; empathy-based education; the relationship between sustainability and thrivability; systemic innovation for planetary flourishing; and syntony as an organizing force in societal evolution. Up and Up - what is next? So many questions about this market's next leg…. Inflation- mixed messages – but the Fed is pushing the carrot Guest - Dr. Richard Smith When Dr. Richard Smith discovered that many top investment advisors and wealthy traders used special mathematical formulas to invest in the stock market, he decided to try it out himself. Using his own formula, he found that he could make more money and take less risk, regardless of market performance. In 2004 he used this algorithm to build one of the first online financial technology platforms. The platform worked so well he made it available to individual investors. In 2013 he founded TradeSmith, which started as a simple way to track portfolios and evolved into a powerful suite of risk-management and portfolio analysis tools. The company grew to over 30,000 investors who entrusted his technology with a staggering $20 billion, earning him the moniker “doctor of uncertainty.” After 16 successful years, he sold TradeSmith at the top of the market. Never one to sit idle, Richard's newest endeavor, RiskSmith, levels the playing field for individual investors. Synthesizing his passion for simplifying complex financial markets and his background in mathematics and systems science, Richard has created tools that help investors better understand and evaluate risk in the market. According to Richard, “Most people have no idea how powerful of a tool good risk management really is. They look at risk as something to stay away from. In fact, it's exactly the opposite. Once you understand risk, you can control it. By taking smart risks, you can truly transform your financial future.” Richard studied mathematics at U.C. Once you understand risk, you can control it. By taking smart risks, you can truly transform your financial future.” Richard studied mathematics at U.C. Berkeley and earned his PhD in Systems Science from the Watson School of Engineering at SUNY Binghamton under the late Professor George Klir. As we will see,  Systems Science's triad of "supersystems, systems, and subsystems" interfaces nicely with the Pythagorean sect's doctrine of numerical philosophy. March 2022 - WEBINAR REPLAY Follow @andrewhorowitz When Dr. Tony talks with Dr. Richard Smith about building your own investment portfolio. Mutual Funds have become the standard practice for many investors, but Dr. Smith believes building your own portfolio is a superior to mutual funds investing. If done with wisdom and a good process, building your own portfolio can allow you to experience higher growth. When Dr. Never one to sit idle, Richard’s newest endeavor, RiskSmith, levels the playing field for individual investors. Synthesizing his passion for simplifying complex financial markets and his background in mathematics and systems science, Richard has created tools that help investors better understand and evaluate risk in the market. According to Richard, Most people have no idea how powerful of a tool good risk management really is. They look at risk as something to stay away from. In fact, it’s exactly the opposite. Once you understand risk, you can control it. By taking smart risks, you can truly transform your financial future. Richard studied mathematics at U.C. Berkeley and earned his PhD in Systems Science from the Watson School of Engineering at SUNY Binghamton under the late Professor George Klir. Richard is also Chairman of the Board and CEO of Foundation for the Study of Cycles, an international nonprofit that promotes and conducts research of cycles and how they can be used to make the world a better place. In this episode Gudrun talks with her new colleague Xian Liao. In November 2018 Xian has been appointed as Junior Professor (with tenure track) at the KIT-Faculty of Mathematics. She belongs to the Institute of Analysis and works in the group Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations. She is very much interested in Dispersive Partial Differential Equations. These equations model, e.g., the behaviour of waves. For that it is a topic very much in the center of the CRC 1173 - Wave phenomena at our faculty. Her mathematical interest was always to better understand the solutions of partial differential equations. But she arrived at dispersive equations through several steps in her carreer. Originally she studied inhomogeneous incompressible fluids. This can for example mean that the fluid is a mixture of materials with different viscosities. If we have a look at the Navier-Stokes equations for materials like water or oil, one main assumption therein is, that the viscosity is a material constant. Nevertheless, the equations modelling their flows are already nonlinear and there are a few serious open questions. Studying flows of inhomogneous materials brings in further difficulties since there occur more and more complex nonlinearities in the equations. It is necessary to develop a frame in which one can characterise the central properties of the solutions and the flow. It turned out that for example finding and working with quantities which remain conserved in the dynamics of the process is a good guiding line - even if the physical meaning of the conserved quantitiy is not always clear. Coming from classical theory we know that it makes a lot of sense to have a look at the conservation of mass, energy and momentum, which translate to conserved quantities as combinations of velocity, its derivatives, pressure and density. Pressure and density are not independent in these simplified models but are independent in the models Xiao studies. In the complex world of inhomogeneous equations we lose the direct concept to translate between physics and mathematics but carry over the knowledge that scale invarance and conservation are central properties of the model. It is interesting to characterize how the complex system develops with a change of properties. To have a simple idea - if it is more developing in the direction of fast flowing air or slow flowing almost solid material. One number which helps to see what types of waves one has to expect is the Mach number. It helps to seperate sound waves from fluid waves. A mathematical/physical question then is to understand the process of letting the Mach number go to zero in the model. It is not that complicated to make this work in the formulae. But the hard work is done in proving that the solutions to the family of systems of PDEs with lower and lower Mach number really tend to the solutions of the derived limit system. For example in order to measure if solutions are similar to each other (i.e. they get nearer and nearer to each other) one needs to find the norms which measure the right properties. Xian was Undergraduate & Master student at the Nanjing University in China from 2004 to 2009, where she was working with Prof. Huicheng Yin on Partial Differential Equations. She succeeded in getting the scholarship from China Scholarship Council and did her PhD within the laboratory LAMA (with Prof. Raphaël Danchin on zero-Mach number system). She was member of the University Paris-Est but followed many master courses in the programs of other Parisian universities as well. In 2013 she spent 8 months at the Charles University in Prague as Postdoc within the research project MORE. There she collaborated with Prof. Eduard Feireisl and Prof. Josef Málek on understanding non-Newtonian fluids better. After that period she returned to China and worked two years at the Academy of Mathematics & Systems Science as Postdoc within the research center NCMIS. With Prof. Ping Zhang she was working on density patch problems. Before her appointment here in Karlsruhe she already returned to Europe. 2016-2018 she was Postdoc at the University Bonn within the CRC 1060. She was mainly working with Prof. Herbert Koch on Gross-Pitaevskii equations - a special topic within dispersive equations. References Short Interview with the CRC 1173 Wave phenomena X. Liao, R. Do you ever feel like our organisations are trying to chisel fine sculptures with blunt instruments?  This could be a company pursuing a cost-cutting drive at the expense of innovation and growth, a public policy that aims to solve last year's problem instead of dealing with future challenges, or an education system transfixed on improving test scores at the expense of deeper education.  The world is complex, nuanced and much like one of this show's running themes, interconnected.  The world is digital, and yet, many of our approaches are analog, particularly in the realm of public policy. Fortunately, there is a better way to look at the world that embraced uncertainty and complexity.  It's called systems thinking and my guest today is an expert in this field.  Michele Battle-Fisher is a professor in the Department of Community Health at Wright State University in Ohio, USA.  She is also the author of a book called "Application of Systems Thinking to Health Policy and Public Health Ethics: Public Health and Private Illness".  She is fun and engaging and we have a very nutrient dense conversation that covers: Michele's background and systems thinking origin story that involves a 5th grade speech contest; What systems thinking is and why it is useful for dealing with uncertainty and risk; Public policy, sub-optimal outcomes and predicting public behaviour; Health and the challenges associated with creating and meeting health targets (including an example from her book that looks at HIC amongst teens); Artificial intelligence (AI); Donald Rumsfeld's famous quote on "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns"; "policy puffins" How we can all become better systems thinkers And much more!
