We are in the thick of that season as we prepare to vote this November, just three months away. It seems that we hear the news media increasingly telling us that this is the most significant election of our lifetimes, where the constant refrain is that if so and so is not elected or if this party is not elected, it will lead to the destruction of democracy or the loss of certain liberties we have as Americans. Dr. Josh Philpot shares that this year feels as though it's more consequential than previous years. He asks Dr. Richard Caldwell if he would talk briefly to the listeners of the Straight Truth Podcast about some of these things. He also asks Dr. Calwell to share how consequential an election like this might be within a biblical worldview. Dr. Caldwell believes this year's election is going to be very consequential. During his nearly 61 years of life, he has seen a significant change in this country, especially concerning its moral atmosphere. This is witnessed in a nation or a society where God removes His restraining grace from them and gives people over to their sinfulness. There's this downward plunge into darkness and destruction where insanity sets in. Dr. Caldwell believes we've reached that place in our culture, and he shares examples of the kinds of moral insanity we are experiencing. Therefore, our country is different, and as we've descended into this moral insanity, we've lost touch with what made this nation what it once was. Our Founders were in touch with the idea that our Creator afforded certain freedoms and rights to people just by virtue of their existence. In this episode of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Chris Calwell, Adjunct Professor of a graduate course on International Renewable Energy at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA. He is also a Principal at Ecos Research, focusing on clean energy technologies and their transformation in our society. His other passion, outside of Ecos Research, is proactively investing in cleantech and tracking down the companies that are doing the best job of preventing climate change, as opposed to running down a checklist of bad things companies aren't doing if you want to buy their stock.Chris is an internationally recognized expert operating at the intersection of the technologies and policies needed to address climate change, particularly in the fields of energy storage, electric vehicles, and renewable energy. He and Ted discuss his background, born in Independence, Missouri, grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and attended Trinity University in San Antonio, earning a degree in Environmental Studies. He then went on to Berkeley and joined the Energy Resources Group (ERG), which led him to his first summer job at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).Chris served seven years in the NRDC Energy Program, helping to launch NRDC's work on climate change, electric vehicles, and voluntary partnerships with electric utilities to improve residential energy efficiency. Chris then co-founded Ecos Consulting in 1997, working with a team of researchers on behalf of the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR® program, the California Energy Commission, PG&E, NRDC, NEEA, NYSERDA and Natural Resources Canada to improve the energy efficiency of residential lighting, appliances, power supplies and consumer electronics through voluntary labeling and incentive programs and mandatory efficiency standards. He and Ted dig into his works in consumer electronics and the external power supply story. They discuss Eco's startling revelations about the standard test for television efficiency at the time, as well as cleantech investment. He shares that he continues to do consulting work in the Energy Star world, and is currently in discussions with them on some additional work related to batteries and EVs.

Ken Calwell is the CMO & SVP of Innovation at Compassion International and responsible for Compassion's fundraising, marketing, and innovation. Prior to this, Ken held senior leadership roles at Domino's Pizza, Wendy's, and Papa Murphy's. Ken started his career at Pillsbury, and then Pizza Hut and I was fortunate to work with him at Pizza Hut. It is simply fascinating how Ken brought the highest level of branding expertise to the non-profit industry along with his passion and vision. Listen to how Ken started at the age of 13 with his own lawn mowing business and built it without marketing, only with service, to achieve 10 years of double digit year over year growth; and how he built on that service mindset to make a big impact for major restaurant chains and non-profits. Here are some key insights from this week's show: Start with clarity on WHO you are serving. Then move to WHY they need you. Dream Big, Test Small, Learn Fast, Repeat over and over. Last week, a very special event took place in Parliament House. The daughters of Sir Robert Menzies and Arthur Calwell - Heather Henderson and Mary Elizabeth Calwell - came together to reflect on their fathers’ legacies, and to offer their perspectives on a different era in Australia’s political history. Michelle Grattan moderated the conversation. The event was organised by the Menzies-Calwell Group, made up of members of parliament from both sides of the political divide. Inspired by the friendship between Menzies and Calwell, the group aims to inject a degree of bipartisanship into our present hyper-partisan politics. On 21 June 1966 an assassination attempt was made on Arthur Calwell the leader of the Australian Labor Party and Opposition Leader. It was only the second political assassination attempt in Australian history In this episode we are going to review the life of Arthur Calwell, including the events of June 1966 when an attempt was made on his life by a 19 year old factory worker called Peter Kocan. The common view of Calwell is that he was a racist old style Labor politician. He once said "two Wongs don’t make a White". Calwell was a staunch defender of the White Australia policy, but he also implemented the era of mass migration to Australia in the post-war era.

The White Australia policy, introduced in 1901, placed severe restrictions on the immigration of non-British and non-white persons. Under Arthur Calwell, Australia's first Immigration Minister (1945-49) these restrictions were relaxed somewhat, but still remained prohibitive to Asian immigrants. What were the reasons behind the implementation of the White Australia policy? What is Arthur Calwell's legacy, and what role did he play in facilitating the policy's eventual abolition? How did Russians and Russian-speaking Displaced Persons enter Australia via Shanghai – the ‘China route' – in the post-Second World War period, and how were they received? Why were so few Jewish Displaced Persons accepted for entry into Australia? How were ethnically Chinese refugees treated? This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of one of Australia’s best-remembered foreign policy speeches – Opposition Leader Arthur Calwell’s 1965 parliamentary statement of opposition to Australia’s participation in the Vietnam war. In honour of this anniversary the Lowy Institute for International Policy hosted Graham Freudenberg AM, the principal author of Calwell's speech, for a discussion on the role of foreign policy speeches, and how that role has changed in the last half-century. Mr Freudenberg is the dean of Australian speechwriters, having worked for no fewer than six Labor leaders and written many of Australia’s most celebrated political speeches. He has also authored a number of books including Churchill and Australia (2008) and his memoir, A Figure of Speech (2005). Joining Mr Freudenberg on the panel was Michael Cooney, speechwriter to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and author of The Gillard Project (2015).
