John Tejada on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/28/22 About John Tejada - Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo. John Tejada was born in Vienna, Austria on April 21, 1974. His parents, both professional classical musicians (his mother an opera singer and father a conductor) began his early piano training at the age of 4. In the summer of 1982, John would move with his mother to her place of birth, Los Angeles. It was that summer at the age of 8 another instrument would catch his eye, the drums. Teaching himself to play along to classic rock music, John quickly learned his way around the drum set (an instrument he still plays to this day in his I'm Not A Gun project). Everything changed however when he got his first taste of early 80's hip hop music. The impact of those early productions and electronic experimentation was very strong. Soon after, at the age of 12 John was given his first set of turntables and a mixer. He wanted to figure out everything he was hearing DJs do at that time. His first gigs came at the age of 12 for his own school, DJing his school dances. Soon after his fascination with DJing began his fascination with production began. Just as he was completely determined to learn the tricks of local DJs, he now wanted to know how the music was made. His introduction came around the age of 15, when he acquired his first looping delay. Soon after came his first workstation, an Ensoniq EPS sampler. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities. John spent every part of his day honing his craft. In 1991, while still in high school, John was already recording his first productions. He was also involved in college radio, even though he was just a junior in high school. John had a spot on “The Fly ID Show” with DJ Rob One. John produced the show's first record for Rob and also went on to do some hip hop production on Ruthless Records. It was during this time that he met his long time collaborator and best friend Arian Leviste. The two met at a hip hop recording session in ‘91. John, already tired of the hip hop scene and where it was going, spent hours talking to Arian about acid house, techno, ambient house and everything they seemed to have in common. The two agreed they would meet weekly to compose material. It took some time before they would release any music, but in 1994 they pressed up their own single and that started a chain reaction of releases. John and Arian during this time also were accepted into CalArts' (California Institute for the Arts) electronic music program, but both decided not to attend to hone their craft on their own. Soon after, John enjoyed a series of releases on European labels like A13, Multiplex, and Generations R&S. In the fall of 1996 he started his own label, Palette Recordings as an outlet to release his own productions without having anyone tell him how to do it. The demand for his music continued to grow and labels such as Ferox, Sino, Mosaic, Immigrant, Plug Research, Pokerflat and 7th City all released Tejada 12”s. John began traveling internationally in ‘97 to showcase his DJ skills around the globe, traveling to more than 25 countries and playing various clubs and festivals around the world. Festivals included Movement (formerly The Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Sonar Festival (in Spain and Tokyo), Dance Valley (Netherlands), Sync Festival (Greece), Mutek Mexico, as well as internationally known spaces such as Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and many more. In 1999, John met classical jazz guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, which was the beginning of another musical frontier. The two had a similar meeting as John and Arian had years before and began talking about making music. The project I'm Not A Gun was born and signed soon after to Berlin-based City Center Offices. This project would bring back John's own training as a drummer while also trying his hand at the guitar. The project became a mix of John's own electronic productions along with Takeshi's professional guitar playing and John's drumming. The project has enjoyed great reviews and success the world over and the duo has performed live in LA, Japan and Germany. In the summer of 2004, John would - in one week - create the two songs that would catapult his techno career. The classic “Sweat On The Walls,” and “Mono On Mono” were released almost at the same time on two different labels. “Sweat” was released on Pokerflat and “Mono On Mono” on Palette. Together the two records sold over 23,000 copies on vinyl. This lead to the equally successful follow up singles “Paranoia,” “Mind Bend” (with more recent collaborator and Palette-signing, Justin Maxwell) “Voyager,” and “The End Of It All.” With dozens of singles and remixes to his credit, he has also produced full-length albums for Playhouse, Palette, Plug Research, deFocus, Moods and Grooves, Immigrant and A13. ENDO on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/27/22 About ENDO - There are individuals who are early adopters, then there are those who are innovators. Mike Henderson aka ENDO falls into the latter category. A ubiquitous figure in electronic dance music for going on two decades, ENDO is a musician, a DJ, a teacher, an inventor, and a visionary. A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in electronic music production and music synthesis and a lifelong drummer, ENDO's technical know-how is an inherent gift. He serves as a product specialist for the always innovative audio technology company iZotope and as an online DJ instructor for his alma mater, Berklee Online. He has an ongoing relationship with Native Instruments as a certified Native specialist, having trained the likes of Carl Cox, Grandmaster Flash, Danny Tenaglia, and David Morales on Traktor. He has contributed greatly to the accuracy of Mixed In Key's algorithm. He is also the co-founder of the evolutionary mapping platform, MIDI Monsters, and the booking platform, AGNT. “My sets are all harmonic progression,” says ENDO. “Every song is in key, or intentionally out of key, modulated harmonically. You can subliminally play with people's emotions with harmonic mixing. There's all this tension, then you give them the harmonic release. You have to tell your story. You have to find the songs that speak to you. That's the art form, the intuition of a good DJ.” ENDO has unleashed his patented brand of harmonic mixing at events across the globe including: Pacha, Marquee, and Cielo in New York, Sound in Los Angeles, Guvernment and Coda in Toronto, Stereo in Montreal, Spybar in Chicago, Heart in Miami, Sands in Ibiza, Club Vertigo in Costa Rica, as well as BPM Festival in Mexico and Electric Festival in Aruba. He has played alongside John Digweed, DJ Craze, Roc Raida, Victor Calderone, Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Chus & Ceballos, Eric Prydz, to name just a few, and perhaps given them a much-sought-after technical tip or two in the process. Heiko Laux on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/24/22 About Heiko Laux - As the youngest of 5 children, Heiko Laux was always the rebel in the family challenging norms even in his youth. To this day his stimulating approach to elec- tronic music has showcased his ability to flutter between genres with various ali- ases, projects and sounds. Founded in 1994 by Heiko Laux, Kanzleramt was Germany's premier techno label releasing some of the freshest sounds of that time. 20 years later the label is still continuously testing boundaries in contempo- rary techno, breaching the gaps between techno, trance and minimal. Since the release of Heiko's last album on Kanzleramt in 2006 he has explored different sonic landscapes ranging from classic techno sounds to deep techno by releasing on various labels. His work on Truesoul, Figure and Soma all feature collaborations with Amsterdam-based producer Steve Rachmad. Other labels include Rejected, Suol, Tronic and Uturn, which dips into the realm of hypnotic techno. In the past year Heiko has put out two EPs on Josh Wink's label, Ovum, each one worked as collaboration. The first release with Diego Hostettler was true to his own style as well as to Ovum as the tracks will excite any dance floor. However, most recently his EP with Alexander Lukat on Ovum has been the number one seller for Ovum on Beatport since its release in October 2013. For Heiko Laux inspiration can spring up from any source. Constantly living in the moment, capturing emotions and reactions from the world around him as his productions illustrate the beauty of exotic lands and galactic landscapes. Once in the moment there is no going back, only moving forward and only creation. In January 2014 the twentieth anniversary of Kanzleramt was celebrated at Berlin's renowned Berghain and since then Heiko has been requested all around the world, from Los Angles to Sweden to Tokyo, to represent and showcase his labels works. The release of Fernweh will mark a great accomplishment for Heiko Laux as it will be his fifth solo album for Kanzleramt. From starting out in 1994 in the heat of the uprising techno, Heiko has experienced many movements in the music- sphere however he will always play an important role and symbolize of the glob- ally celebrated golden age of techno. With no interest in remaking albums or dwelling on the past, Heiko is constantly moving forward, finding new inspiration. Motivated by his undoubted passion, he will continue to produce music to fill the void in contemporary techno. Swedish Egil on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/23/22 About Swedish Egil - Egil just wanted to groove… To get the full story of GROOVE RADIO, you have to know about the man behind the groove, Swedish Egil. For nearly four decades, Egil has been bringing fresh music to the world's ears, starting with 10 years as a DJ at KROQ-FM in the 80's where he helped break many artists into the mainstream including New Order, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, UB40 and Front 242. Always on the pulse of new and exciting global sounds, Egil spearheaded much of the music and the bands that formed the Punk, New Wave, and eventually the underground Dance movements of the early 90's. Egil then accepted a rare opportunity to develop his Music Director skills at the now legendary MARS-FM in Los Angeles – the station that broke techno / rave music on U.S. radio with The Orb, Prodigy, and Moby. In 1992, Egil began to focus on the future beats of club culture when the first radio broadcast of his own GROOVE RADIO INTERNATIONAL program was heard from the Arizona desert. The feedback was immediate. Listeners began to demand this new electronic sound, this breath of fresh air and positive vibes. GROOVE RADIO soon became the catalyst for electronic music's exposure across the entire states. It was the first media outlet in the US to cater wholly to the underground community – bringing DJs, artists, and personalities from all over the world to play, spin, or just share moments of their lives across the airwaves. With early presence on the internet back in 1995, GROOVE RADIO was the first to feature global webcasts with artists such as Future Sound of London and Orbital. This true commitment to championing the art of the DJ has helped bring into the GROOVE RADIO studio such talents as The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Paul van Dyk, Sasha, John Digweed, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Faithless, LTJ Bukem, Dimitri From Paris, BT, Roni Size & Reprazent, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez, and many more. Since its inception, GROOVE RADIO has celebrated over 2500 syndicated shows, launched the first 24/7 radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to DJ culture, became a top 5 internet stations in the world, and has released an acclaimed series of GROOVE RADIO PRESENTS recordings. With a worldwide audience at GROOVERADIO.COM, Egil maintains his vision and the promise from years ago to make digital dance music available to the masses. Jesse Rhys Cannon on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/22/22 About Jesse Rhys Cannon - I somehow got my first work being paid in the music business when I was 15. Since then I've managed to work in nearly every facet of the music business. If a stranger happens to know who I am, they usually know me from being lucky enough to have worked on records in various capacities with bands like The Cure, Animal Collective, The Misfits, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brand New, Limp Bizkit, Man Overboard, Somos, Basement, Kevin Devine, Weird Al Yankovic, NOFX and The Menzingers. I'm also known for writing the book Get More Fans: The DIY Guide To The New Music Business, which has gone on to be one of the most popular books on the music business as well as the best selling book on creativity in music Processing Creativity: The Tools, Practices And Habits Used To Make Music You're Happy With. I also host two podcasts, Off The Record and Noise Creators and write articles on the music business for various sites like Alternative Press and Party Smasher Inc. along with a handful of others. But that doesn't explain how I got to do all of that and that's what I'm supposed to explain here. When I was 15 I started to get paid for doing live sound at concerts and spoken word events. Two years later, a hilarious and fun guy by the name of Stork liked my mixes and invited me to engineer live performances at the world-renowned freeform radio station WFMU. There I was lucky enough to work for 9 years recording acts like The Magnetic Fields, Spoon, The Sea and The Cake, Olivia Tremor Control and a couple hundred others. Because of this I started doing live sound at local clubs The Pipeline and Connections. In time, I started booking shows for the company that booked those clubs and the legendary Coney Island High in NYC. Somewhere in this time I got my first credit on a record singing back up vocals on a song with Joey & Dee Dee Ramone, which I still question if I've ever topped. Those jobs gave me enough courage to put on my own concerts, and be crazy enough to think I knew what I was doing enough to start recording local bands. But all of this would happen at night, so I needed a day job. I then started working at my local punk record store (Let It Rock), which then qualified me to work at Soapbox Records on St. Marks Place in NYC. This was great since it also housed esteemed indie label Go-Kart Records where I ran the record store and did publicity. While I love marketing, PR is way too social for me and I preferred talking to creative people instead of cranky zine editors. I was also writing for the esteemed zines of the day like Tape Op, Punk Planet and Maximum RockNRoll. So I decided to stop doing live sound and working at record labels in order to focus on record production. My boss at Go Kart was kind enough to give me a recommendation to Alan Douches at West West Side Music, who happens to be the engineer with the most credits in all of music history. At West West Side I got to learn how to engineer and master from the best in the business. Not only did I get to work under Alan's amazing talent, the best producers in the business were coming by every day (J. Robbins, John Agnello, Brian McTernan) as well as the coolest bands around seemed to walk in the door every day (Fatboy Slim, Fall Out Boy, LCD Soundsystem, Brand New). In that time, I met Steve Evetts (one of my favorite producers growing up) and got to work with him on great records by The Dillinger Escape Plan, Senses Fail, Saves The Day and Say Anything. He then brought me to work with Ross Robinson (my other favorite producer growing up) and I got to work with The Cure & Limp Bizkit among others under him. While all that was happening, two other significant parts of the story happened. I harnessed my own production skills and they became so in demand I started my own studio Cannon Found Soundation, which I still run to this day working with hundreds of bands a year. In that time these two interests collided and I decided to start a blog on the things other blogs weren't writing about in music and wanted to show all the secrets being hidden since that's the most punk thing you can do and punk is the closest thing I have to a religion. This blog became Musformation, a blog I continued through 2015, when I decided to diversify my writing across sites with bigger audiences. The blog's music business articles seemed to be very popular and really resonated, so I decided to go with it. I started helping and then managing the two most promising bands I was producing — Man Overboard and Transit, so I could experiment with the ideas I was writing about. These ideas turned out to be right and both signed with one of the biggest indies in the world (Rise Records) and built massive fan bases under my watch. That was fun and all, but managing and producing records full-time do not mix. So those bands went their way and I kept producing records. A lot of bands asked me to manage them, but I like sleep and hate stress so I decided against that option. I instead put out my book Get More Fans, so every band could learn everything I did working with them and researching the new music business. Because of that book I got a reputation for knowing music tech, which led me to getting approached to do the podcast, Off The Record and form Noise Creators, a service I co-founded that helps connect musicians with the best producers in music today. I now host Atlantic Records Inside The Album where I make audio documentaries on the creative processes of some of the best artists in music like Dashboard Confessional, nothing.nowhere, Jason Mraz and Vance Joy. In 2017 I released Processing Creativity to much praise, I am presently working on a bunch of conversations I want to have on how we change the way people create music to reflect when creative science says enhances creativity. I am trying to change the way records are made and always looking for bands who are interested in doing something new and interesting. I am presently producing, mixing and mastering records 7 days a week and developing a documentary. In 2019 I relaunched Musformation as a YouTube channel to start distributing the knowledge I've acquired to a new audience. As well I relaunched MusforMGMT where I am handling marketing and label services to established artists. In 2020 I took on production duties for the hit podcast The Daily Beast's The New Abnormal as well as their other fantastic podcasts Fever Dreams & The Last Laugh. In 2021 I opened Podstream Studios a live streaming & podcast studio in the heart of Times Square as well as Brooklyn Recording Paradise Brooklyn's most enjoyable recording environment. The Sandman on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/22/22 About The Sandman - I started DJing in 2014, inspired by Mark Knight, Metodi Hristov and Coyu. My interest grew from House, and expanded out to techno with a melodic side. Some of my favorite labels are Suara & Set About labels.“As a DJ there is no better feeling in the world than controlling a dance floor and hearing that bass drum kick through the speakers.”I've been told I have a knack for picking out the lesser heard tunes that will get the crowd going, I love finding tracks that other DJs might not have. I have played at various locations around the UK and Ibiza including a headline set at Ibiza Rocks. I also do a podcast where I get on a guest DJ to talk about their musical background and their career, which has had guests such as Rowetta, Sam Young and Tony Romanello, to name a few.
