This week, we present Rachel's interview with Laura Taylor, a Special Education Teacher and AAC Specialist with a years of experience teaching language and literacy to people with complex communication needs. Laura has done amazing work utilizing the Pragmatic Organization of Dynamic Displays (PODD), a form of AAC that, at least in the early stages, focuses on teaching communication functions along with vocabulary.   Before the interview, Rachel shares about a client of hers with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. This client was strongly averse to AAC - he would even protest against looking at an iPad with AAC on it. Rachel describes how she got him to start using AAC by giving him a “Please don't take off my sweater” button! We all have desired ways of how we like to communicate, but we have to be aware of not imposing our preferred methods onto others. 

Communication, Language, and Defining “The Path” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s definition for Communication is as follows : (1 a) a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.  Their definition for Language is : (1 a) the words, their pronunciation, and the methods of combining them used and understood by a community. Communication and language have been crucial to our survival as a species; the ability to share knowledge on what plants are good to eat, how to get across a raging river, and when there is danger around have solidified our success in the natural world.  There are 4 commonly agreed upon forms of communication; Verbal, Nonverbal, written, and visual.  - Verbal communication uses language and the spoken word (phone calls, zoom, in person) - Nonverbal communication uses body language, eye contact and proximity (zoom, FaceTime, in person) - Written communication uses a physical medium to capture the words to then be read (books, texts, email) Visual Communication uses pictures, graphs or other medium that is seen (instagram, snapchat, memes?) Ok now we are all on the same page in the use of the words here. Now more than ever in our recorded history do we have so many forms of communicating with each other; yet there appears to be a disconnect in the messages and the communication. We choose to communicate with those that reinforce our own values more often than those with opposing views or values. We trend to lesser forms forms of communication more often because it seems more convenient. I have become more aware of how easily the message we are trying to communicate can be misinterpreted when we use things like, Instagram messages, text messages, and emails.  With more people relying on digital communication due to the Pandemic the chances for the the message you are trying to convey to be misinterpreted has increased.  Communication is a 2 way street and I have noticed a shift as to the importance placed on the receivers interpretation more so than the senders intent. Ideally we address this on a societal level; before we do that we have to address it within ourself.  How do we address this? Step 1; As the Receiver it is your job to assume positive intent. We project tone into written communication based on where we are in that moment. If we assume the sender is not out to spite us we will read the message differently. Step 2; As the Sender it is your job to take the time and review before sending the message. Ask yourself If you wold read negativity in your message. If you are stressed, upset, or distracted take 2 to 3 deep breaths before composing the message. Step 3; Bypass the written and make a call. I communicate better verbally than I do in the written, I think most humans do. Break what has become the social norm and pick up the phone, allow tone to play into the conversation.   You might be wondering how does this relate to defining “The Path” ? Let’s go back to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary;  Path - 1 : a trodden way   - 2 : a track specially constructed for a particular use   - 3 a : Course, Route       b : a way of life, conduct, or thought   -4 a : the continuous series of positions or configurations that can be assumed in any motion or process of change by a moving or varying system     A way of life , conduct, or thought. Those are what is within our control to define for ourselves and then to follow. You control how you think about an issue, how you act outwardly, and the way you want to live.  Choose carefully the words and language you use to define your path; It is not for anyone else except yourself.Do you want to be considered a victim because of your skin color, gender, or the way you identify? You get to decide that; not society.   Do you want to half-ass your work just skating by or do you want to put your head down and grind it out to make something better of yourself? Again You get to decide.    I choose not to be victim, despite what the societal narrative is about Purple Heart Recipient “disabled” veterans. I choose to let my struggles and short comings propel me to become better; to learn from them, face them head on and as this Infantry is famous for “close with and destroy the enemy.”.   This takes time. Remember what I mentioned last week; We can understand the concept and it takes time and practice to master the technique.

Vajradevi introduces the idea of 'talking meditation', where we carry the thread of awareness through verbal communication. This extends beyond awareness of the speech precepts to being aware of the texture or tone of our own and others' voices, using a 'settled back' stance and giving priority to the thread of awareness/knowing over the content of what's being said. She gives tips for the practice: staying aware of our own minds, aiming to let go of trying and focusing so as to aim for a more panoramic awareness. Joey Pogue joined the Department of Communication in the fall of 2004. He teaches media theory, interpersonal communication and gender studies to both undergraduate and graduate students. As a generalist, he is capable of teaching a wide variety of courses. Some of these include Media Analysis and Criticism, International Communication, Mass Communication Theory, Gender Communication, and Philosophy and Ethics of Mass Communication. Gender Communication is his favorite area of study. Prior to coming to PSU, Joey's experience includes teaching English, Communication, and Theatre. His last position was at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas where he taught a variety of courses including, American Literature, Classical Rhetoric, Acting, Media and Popular Culture, and Communication and Identity. Additional professions that Joey has experienced include being a carpenter, an actor, a set designer and a musician. Joey's current research agenda focuses on the social construction of gender and, particularly, mediated masculinity. He is an active member of The Organization for the Study of Communication Language and Gender and each year he attends their annual conference. Since 1999 he has presented five papers at that conference, four of which deal with masculinity as it is portrayed by the mass media. Joey is also an active participant in the National Communication Association. Joey lives in Pittsburg and enjoys outdoor sports, especially those associated with nature. Everyone who has been on a medical mission has some embarrassing and/or hilarious stories of cultural insensitivity or language blunders. Sometimes the events are just funny. Sometimes they can seriously compromise the intended impact of the whole mission, including our Christian witness. This session offers perspective, spiritual grounding and practical tools for building healthy relationships, avoiding, or at least recovering from many of the common mistakes in cross-cultural missions.Our discussion will include:• Framing the problem: Why doesn’t everyone see the world my way? • A spiritual foundation: Humility – be a Learner• Communication: Language is more than just words. Each key feature of FASD can vary widely across individuals exposed to prenatal alcohol. While consensus exists for the diagnosis of FAS across diagnostic systems (see last podcast), minor variations among the systems lead to differences in definitions and cut-off criteria for other diagnoses across the FASD continuum. The FASD conditions of Partial FAS (PFAS) and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) are reviewed today, as well as the University of Washington's 4-Digit Code designations of Static Encephalopathy and Neurobehavioral Disorder, which are essentially refinements of ARND. Partial FAS (PFAS)This diagnosis is easiest to explain and, in all practical purposes, the same as FAS. Central nervous system damage is present at the same level as FAS, and these individuals have the same functional disabilities but "look" less like FAS. Here are the criteria: Moderate to severe FAS facial features are present (small eyes, flattened philtrum, thinned upper lip),Central nervous system (CNS) damage is severe (either structural or neurological problems, or problems in three or more functional brain domains), andPrenatal alcohol exposure is confirmed. Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND)This is where the diagnostics become muddy to the average layperson, so I want to keep it basic. For an ARND diagnosis, an individual must have confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure and evidence of clinically significant impairment in three or more of the following Ten Brain Domains: Achievement, Adaptive Behavior, Attention, Cognition/IQ, Communication/Language, Executive Functioning, Memory, Motor Skills, Sensory Integration/Soft Neurological Signs, and/or Social Communication. Growth deficiency and FAS facial features may be mild or nonexistent, and are irrelevant to the diagnosis. Static Encephalopathy and Neurobehavioral DisorderThe 4-Digit Code separates ARND into "Static Encephalopathy," which literally means non-progressive brain damage, and "Neurobehavioral Disorder," which requires that only two Brain Domains are clinically impaired.Additional NotesThe problem with FASD conditions is not about the facial features or growth deficiency. It is about the CNS damage that then creates functional problems in an individual's life. That is why the assessment of the Ten Brain Domains is so important and the most germain aspect to an FASD Evaluation: to find out how to help an individual function better. Don't worry about getting caught up in the specifics all the diagnoses. Just know that if an individual had moderate to severe prenatal alcohol exposure AND has functional problems, then an FASD condition (disability) may be present. This leads to another question that someone asked last week at a workshop I gave: "I had a few drinks before I knew I was pregnant, but stopped in the second month. My kid has terrific grades, but has low attention skills and poor social skills [Adaptive Behavior problems, from the Ten Brain Domains perspective]. Does this mean he has FASD?" No. While there is no recommended safe level of drinking alcohol while pregnant, this situation does not result in an automatic FASD diagnosis. The attention skills and behavior problems would have to be severe, and the most important thing is missing: A diagnostic team would need to be convinced that the problems were related to the alcohol exposure. Attention and social skills can be affected by so many factors in life (e.g., genetics, peer group, parenting style, etc.) that this are not diagnostic. I would like to caution everyone not to "over-diagnose" just as much as I want to caution everyone to be knowledgeable about the potential negative effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.
