On “Jesuitical” this week, Zac and Ashley chat with Simon Critchley, the Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York and a Director of the Onassis Foundation, about his new book, Mysticism. Among the most prolific of modern academic philosophers, Simon has written over twenty books, from works of philosophy to studies on topics from Greek tragedy and dead philosophers to David Bowie, football and suicide. Zac, Ashley and Simon discuss:  - The historical development of the concept of “mysticism,” how it was suppressed during the Reformation and its resurgent relevance for today. - Emotionally-charged forms of piety in the high Middle Ages among women mystics like Julian of Norwich - How modern mysticism can provide access to the sacred and transcendent in a melancholic world In Signs of the Times, Zac is joined by Fr. Sam Sawyer, S.J., editor-in-chief of America, for a conversation about Pope Francis' strongly worded letter of support to the Catholic bishops of the United States in which he denounced the mass deportation of undocumented migrants initiated by President Donald Trump, and corrected Vice President JD Vance's theology.  Links for further reading:  Mysticism by Simon Critchley  Pope Francis' letter, JD Vance's ‘ordo amoris' and what the Gospel asks of all of us on immigration Pope Francis to U.S. Catholic bishops: Oppose mass deportations What's on tap? In this episode, I got to talk with Simon Critchley about his new book Mysticism. We delve into Critchley's journey towards exploring mysticism, his reflections on modernity, and his discussions on key figures like William James, Julian of Norwich, and Meister Eckhart. We also discuss the importance of reading and understanding mystical texts, the role of prayer, and how modernity has impacted our perception of faith and spirituality. His engagement with mysticism beyond the confessional boundaries in which it so often emerges makes the topic and the book a timely reflection for our contemporary spiritual crisis. Simon Critchley has written over twenty books, including studies of Greek tragedy, David Bowie, football, suicide, Shakespeare, how philosophers die, and a novella. He is the Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York and a Director of the Onassis Foundation. As co-editor of The Stone at the New York Times, Critchley showed that philosophy plays a vital role in the public realm. On a narrow street in the old Greek quarter of Alexandria, the world renowned poet and writer Constantine Cavafy created some of the masterpieces that still inspire people across the world today. As of this past May, this home in Alexandria is now open to the public. Together with the Cavafy Archive in Athens, which is home to over 2,000 digitized manuscripts, with poems and handwritten notes, Cavafy's life and work are now accessible to a global audience. Prof. Gonda Van Steen, the Koraes Chair at the Centre for Hellenic Studies and Department of Classics at King's College London and a member of the academic committee for the Alexandria Cavafy House, joins me to explore why making Cavafy widely accessible is important, and look at why his work still inspires us today. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Onassis Foundation has restored Cavafy House in AlexandriaGreek poet who inspired Forster, Hockney and Jackie Onassis emerges from the shadowsGreek PM reiterates warning to North MacedoniaCyprus-US traveler data agreement ratified

Simon Critchley's curiosity is on steroids, and that curiosity, love of learning, and genuine interest in other people fuel his moxie. In this episode, we explore with Simon the role of philosophy in creating moxie. He shares his wisdom on how we have more in common than we think and how forming alliances and relationships based on those commonalities allows us to learn from others rather than judge them. He explains that to philosophize is to take time and resist busyness. It's about looking up and taking in the spaciousness around us with openness and without judgment. Cultivating a curious mindset is worthwhile work; putting down our tech and forming connections is imperative to our humanity.Simon is the Hans Jonas Professor at The New School in New York City, where he teaches philosophy. He writes prolifically on a wide range of topics. His books include Very Little…Almost Nothing (1997), Infinitely Demanding (2007), The Book of Dead Philosophers (2009), and The Faith of the Faithless (2012). Simon has also written a novella, Memory Theatre (2015), a book-length essay, Notes on Suicide (2020), and studies of David Bowie, Football, and Apply-Degger (Onassis, 2020). More recent books are Tragedy, The Greeks and Us (Pantheon, 2019), and Bald (Yale, 2021). Simon was the series moderator of ‘The Stone,' a philosophy column in The New York Times, and co-editor of three volumes connected to the series, most recently Question Everything (2022). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Onassis Foundation and also 50 percent of an obscure musical combo called Critchley & Simmons. A book called Mysticism will be published by The New York Review of Books in 2024.An ardent lover of the Beautiful Game, Simon is a dedicated fan of Liverpool FC.This episode of Main Street Moxie is proudly sponsored by Elyse Harney Real Estate and Kindred Property Care.Support the show

After graduating from Oxford University, he lectured as a poet, art critic and a leading proponent of the principles of aestheticism. In 1891, he published The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only novel which was panned as immoral by Victorian critics, but is now considered one of his most notable works. As a dramatist, many of Wilde's plays were well received including his satirical comedies Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), his most famous play. Unconventional in his writing and life, Wilde's affair with a young man led to his arrest on charges of "gross indecency" in 1895. The school he founded, the first academy of rhetoric, was very different from the intellectual and philosophical Academy of Plato. Isocrates was contemptuous of the Platonic circles, and is considered focused on polished expression, rather than the higher intellectual pursuits. Isocrates training was almost entirely given over to rhetoric, the art of persuasion.Of his hundred pupils the most notable were Timotheus, the Athenian general, prominent in Athens's history between 378 and 355; Nicocles, the ruler of Salamis in Cyprus; and the two greatest Greek historians of the 4th century—Ephorus, who wrote a universal history, and Theopompus, who wrote the history of Philip II of Macedon. In this way his influence permeated both politics and literature. The letter to Demonicus was written approximately 374-372 BCE.Its authenticity is disputed by some, as it was believed that the verbal form and style were not consistent with the style and views of Isocrates. However, the work's influence is evident in other oratory speeches, advice to rulers, pedagogical works and essays that have borrowed its elements. The Letter to Demonicus has been used as an example and reference for many late Roman and Byzantine scholars and extracts of it have been found in seven papyri.
This letter is offered as a gift to Demonicus. Isocrates explains that friendship, benevolence, modesty in the way of life, and does not fail to mention the difficult task of fulfilling the duties related to public functions. Isocrates points out that proper behavior not only leads to virtue, which is the highest “commodity”, and adds that virtue is also a pleasure of higher order. To listen to the Letter to Demonicus in Greek, follow this link:https://youtu.be/NuKjxVjnzN4Read more information about rhetoric here:https://www.britannica.com/topic/rhetoricFor a list of works by Isocrates:http://classics.mit.edu/Browse/browse-Isocrates.htmlAnd for more information about Isocrates and analysis of his works:http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.04.0075:chapter=6

Bald: 35 Philosophical Short Cuts (Yale UP, 2021) brings together thirty-five essays, originally published in the Times, on a wide range of topics, from the dimensions of Plato's academy and the mysteries of Eleusis to Philip K. Dick, Mormonism, money, and the joy and pain of Liverpool Football Club fans. Simon Critchley has been a strong voice in popular philosophy for more than a decade. In an engaging and jargon‑free style, Critchley writes with honesty about the state of the world as he offers philosophically-informed and insightful considerations of happiness, violence, and faith. Stripped of inaccessible academic armatures, these short pieces bring philosophy out of the ivory tower and demonstrate an exciting new way to think in public. Simon Critchley is the Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research and the moderator of the New York Times' Stone column. He is a board member of the Onassis Foundation, and his most recent book is Tragedy, the Greeks, and Us. He lives in Brooklyn, NY. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His research interests are Cultural Studies; Critical Theory; Environmental History; Medieval (Intellectual) History; Gothic Studies; 18th and 19th Century British Literature. YouTube Channel. Twitter.
