Let's just begin by saying there is nothing in Nashville like Pitch Meeting, Eric Fortaleza's weekly musical highwire act. Billed as “Nashville's Best Writer's Open Mic” the weekly show, which resumes this Tuesday February 25th features a powerhouse band of Nashville heavies (often of 10 or more players) whose job it is to back the any songwriter who's name is drawn from dozens of hopeful singer-songwriters. The catch - no one has heard the song, not the audience, and more importantly, not the band.“No chord charts, no pre-song run through,” says Pitch Meeting founder Eric Fortaleza. “We just go for it.”I've been to a few Pitch Meetings, and I count them among the most exciting musical experiences I've ever seen. Not only does the song somehow congeal around the band, but an arrangement seems to spring out of the ground like witched water — horn parts, a guitar solo, a bridge breakdown. I feel like you don't believe me. It's totally crazy. It all happens because of Eric Fortaleza, who has something of a gambler's taste for musical thrills and guts to spare. To me, he represents a new crop of Nashville musician, something different from the guys you see down on broadway, hoping to move their way up the ranks of touring musicians to become what is the gold standard of the Nashville Cat — the A-List studio musician. That's a laudable goal, to be sure, but in its application there's a sense of reticence, a holding something in reserve, because “you never know who's gonna be in the room.” People trying to get discovered may fire their flashiest tricks, but tricks are different from taking chances. Eric is ALL about taking chances. He came to Nashville from Sydney, Australia a couple months before the Pandemic. But he was born in the Phillipines. We talk alot about how being the child of immigrants had something to do with his inveterate hustle. We talk about alot of stuff in this episode. His unlikely but somehow inevitable move to Nashville after ten years on the Australian scene. Why he founded Pitch Meeting, what he likes about it, what's next. At some point in the conversation, the studio door opened to the afternoon glare and in stepped Eric's bandmate Owen Fader, who looks like and sings like a baby faced angel. They played a song together, which shifted the direction of the podcast moving forward. What do you think I mean? The Morse Code with Korby Lenker is a reader-supported publication. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Comics legend Marjorie Liu joins our host Lodro Rinzler to discuss an incredibly fun and disturbing issue of X-Men! Before we sell you on all the hilarity, let's get real for a moment: Marjorie Liu is not just an extraordinary comic writer, she's also just a lovely, grounded, kind human being. It was an honor to have her on the show. Okay, now on to the silliness. In this episode we discuss how Marjorie writes from the gut and, in her words, her gut is really weird. Also, how she went through a cathartic experience writing X-23 (now Wolverine). Topics include: teenage Marjorie wrote X-Men fanfic in the Marvel Universe, a hat and trenchcoat is more than sufficient to disguise a six foot, blue, furry man Charles Xavier sends postcards from space Mesmero is a bag of dicks Also Mesmero read a Playboy once and thinks that's how people should always pose the Phoenix force has limits on how badly you can mess up Jean Grey At the end we answer questions from YOU! Yes, you! Then Marjorie Liu spits wisdom on how to be yourself even and especially when others are trying to tell you who you should become and how to transmute hatred and negativity into gold. This episode is not to be missed! Marjorie Liu is an attorney and New York Times bestselling novelist and comic book writer. Her work at Marvel includes X-23, Black Widow, Han Solo, Dark Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men. She is also the co-creator of Monstress from Image Comics, which has won multiple Hugo Awards, British Fantasy Awards, the Harvey Award, and five Eisner Awards, making Liu the first-ever woman (and woman of color) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category. She teaches comic book writing at MIT. Marjorie's extensive work with Marvel includes the Dark Wolverine series, NYX: No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. She received national media attention for Astonishing X-Men, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. You can find more of Marjorie over at her website. In Episode 144, Gen and Jette read the first volume of Night Eaters, a horror graphic novel by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. You know we're all about the creepy graphic novels, but this one had the added bonus of being very funny. Safe to say we loved it!Show NotesMarjorie Liu and Sana Takeda have worked in all corners of the comic/graphic novel world, including Marvel and their co-created series, Monstress, published by Image Comics. They've both won Hugo and Eisner awards, and Liu is the first ever woman (and woman of colour) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category.Shout out to Hoopla, as always. We might just share a brain now.Another shout out belongs to the Concord Bookshop, where Jette snagged her copy of Night Eaters from their amazing graphic novel section. With Anoushka Lucas' talent and success as a songwriter, it may come as a surprise for some that she initially had no interest at all in working in theatre. Just like in most of her endeavors, she fell into it. She expands on this as shares her journey, revealing her initial passive disposition, which contrasts with her willingness to embrace diverse experiences–the duality of man, as they say. From playing the piano and writing songs at an early age, Anoushka talks about her upbringing, writing songs from the point of view of the characters on TV, and how the piano became her sanctuary. She reflects on failure and her aversion to it, and the heartbreak and acceptance that her initial plan of becoming a pop star and securing a record deal isn't going to happen. Despite the initial struggle, she recognizes the value of the experience, emphasizing the usefulness of failure in shaping her life positively, proving that tenacity goes a long way. Anoushka Lucas is a singer, songwriter, musical theatre composer, and actor who has starred in West End productions, including “Oklahoma!” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. She began composing music at the age of 14 and has a degree in Russian and Italian from Oxford University. She has been nominated for an Olivier award, an Evening Standard Theatre Award, and a Black British Theatre Award. She was the recipient of the Best Writer award in the 2023 stage debut awards. Among other films. You can also see her in “Murder on the Orient Express” and starting on the 21st of February, she can be heard in a brand new original musical podcast called “U.Me: The Complete Musical”. Playwright Howard Skora stopped by Playwright's Spotlight, and what a fascinating interview he delivered. What I thought would be another insightful look into the craft of playwriting, turned into an unsuspecting history lesson about the psychologist Sigmund Freud and quite a few unknown stories about his life. Not only does Howie educate me about the all things Freud, we delve into the stakes in comedy and playing against opposites, taking creative license with historical characters and stories, the research that goes into said people and events and what gets sifted out, and whether or not he writes prior, during or post research as well as the need to collaborate. In addition, we touch on writing for specific actors, stage directions requiring specificity, the pros of self-producing, rewriting during rehearsals, and the struggles and success and starting in standup when it comes to playwriting. It's definitely an episode for the books, and I look forward to catching a performance of Freud on Cocaine. Howard Skora is a Los Angeles based playwright whose play Damaged Furniture had a 6 month sold-out run in Los Angeles that garnered him a Best Play and Best Writer nominations for the 2019 Valley Theater Awards. His first play, Miserable with an Ocean View ran for 5 sold-out months and was the top-rated original comedy in Los Angeles on Bitter Lemons for its entire run with a 94% sweet rating. His most recent play Freud on Cocaine will premiere at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, CA September 8th, 2023.To view the video format of this episode, visit the link below -https://youtu.be/lFdmcz_VyCYLinks to sites and resources mentioned in this episode - The Diane Thomas Award -https://www.networkisa.org/contest/view/ucla-diane-thomas-awardThe Actor's Gym -https://www.theactorsgymny.org/teamThe Whitefire Theatre -https://www.whitefiretheatre.comHollywood Fringe -https://www.hollywoodfringe.orgLucy Pollack PR -https://www.lucypr.comDunning-Kruger Effect -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effectTickets for Freud on Cocaine -www.freudoncocaine.comContact information and socials for Howard Skora -www.howardskora.comTwitter - @howardskoraIG - @howardskoraWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

Driven by a passion to create narratives that inspire change, Toluwani Obayan has made tangible contributions to the creative space through writing, directing, and editing as seen in projects like her short film “Heart & Might” dedicated to fallen heroes, “This Lady Called Life” a 2020 film for which she received the Best of Nollywood 2020 Award for Best Screenplay, and an AMVCA nomination for Best Writer, and “Explore the World With Tindel” for which she and the team received the ITFF Africa 2019 award for Best African Film in the documentaries section. She has also found creative expression through her published academic article “Audience Perception of Nollywood's Recurrent Themes as Agents of Socio-cultural Development”, narrative articles such as “The Tale of a Disgruntled Pair of Nigerian Flip Flops” (a satirical protest against child abuse), and her book “Becoming a Spectacular Woman” (2017). She has a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications and a Masters Degree in Film and Television Studies. The only aspect of architecture she enjoyed was the drawing element. Toluwani failed math and had to repeat the year, which gave her the chance to go down the path she really wanted: the arts. Toluwani found herself much more content in the arts and she began to excel in school. Mathematics, the subject she initially struggled with, became a subject she mastered and taught others on. Getting your dream job takes time - Toluwani worked as an intern at a big production firm in Nigeria for two years where she edited films day in and day out. Toluwani was aware that her two years working as an intern wouldn't automatically grant her the chance to write a screenplay. She did this to get herself involved in the film industry and slowly worked her way up for 6 years to be able to partake in the directing and writing she dreamed of receiving recognition for it. Often, the path to where you want to be isn't linear. It takes time, consistency and effort. Get to know the people around you - One of Toluwani's colleagues from her intern days went on to become a big name director in Nigeria. They had both worked as film editors which allowed them to get to know each other. From this connection, Toluwani was able to collaborate with him on several projects and break further into the industry. You never know where someone will end up or who they will become. Be kind and become acquainted with the people around you, regardless of your position or theirs. Be selective with the things that matter - Toluwani learned to watch the trajectory of the people who want to work with her. Just because they paid her to write a script doesn't mean they'll turn it into a production. For a screenwriter's resume, scripts that have been made into productions carry far more weight and will be more impressive. Toluwani always considers when production will occur and how the product will be distributed before she signs onto a new project. Do what you love for you, not for others - The need for external validation is an internal weakness that can stunt the interest and passion we have for doing what we love. Toluwani has always wanted her screenwriting to help others but she realized she was relying too heavily on outside approval and had strayed from her initial purpose. It's okay if some people don't like your work. Don't shun failure- keep moving forward and practice to get better. Be ambitious and stay true to yourself. In Bill's early television work he won two Logies – Australia's Emmy – for Television Reporter of the Year, and Most Outstanding Documentary. All these accolades are AMAZING however what I really wanted to talk to Bill about was his experience with 'intuition' which is the subject of his most recent film which came about as a result of Bill's near death experience narrowly escaped due to... you guessed it, intuition! We talk about what intuition is and how we experience and tap into it and we also talk about fear and it's relationship to intuition. Fascinating topics! “Visibility equals donors. The more work you do, the more you're out there, the more people come to see the shows, the more you continue to maintain your lists of who is coming to see the work – the more easy fundraising becomes.” What is the future of theater making? How has creating theater in rehearsal rooms helped cultivate the multi-hyphenate, an economically friendly hiring option for producers? From the point of view from one of the most sought after directors and cultivators, Moisés Kaufman has incredible insight for anyone who wants to found their own company. What are the first steps? What should they be aware of? How do you raise money? Make your company official? Money can scare people – but it's imperative to understand it when creating theatre. On this episode we discuss being pushed into boxes and how that affected his journey of bringing the Tony Nominated musical Paradise Square to Broadway. Plus, there is a ticket giveaway where you and a guest can see the show! All you have to do are these two is: Follow in IG: @dearmultihyphenate Write a review – as long as you write a review from June 1st to June 13th, that review will be considered an entry! Moisés Kaufman is the founder and artistic director of Tectonic Theater Project, a Tony- and Emmy-nominated director and playwright, and a 2015 recipient of the National Medal of Arts. This week: Part 1 of Discussion about 2021's Eisner Nominees, and covering new comics this week: "Karmen" #5, "Mamo" #1, "Ordinary Gods" #1, and "Wynd" #8. On this week's Comics Syllabus, we start with “Polybagged,” (video episode here) covering some new comics in shops this week (July 7, 2021), talking about: "Karmen" #5 by Guillem March (Image), “Mamo" #1 by Sas Milledge (Boom!), “Ordinary Gods” #1 by Kyle Higgins and Felipe Watanabe (Image), and “Wynd” #8 by James Tynion IV (Boom!) with mentions of other titles. [CORRECTION: In my review of “Ordinary Gods” #1, I mistakenly attributed the backup prose story at the end, “Flip of a Coin,” to the comic's writer, Kyle Higgins. In fact, the backup story was written by Jana Tropper. Apologies for the misattribution!] Then, we talk through about half the list of Eisner Nominations for 2021 (video episode here), including Best Continuing Series, Best Limited Series, Best New Series, Best Single Issue, Best Short Story, Best Writer, and Best Writer/Artist. For the full interview visit: ⭐ nightclub.andrewholecek.com/interviews/david-jay-brown Join Andrew and David Jay Brown for a delightful romp through a host of topics that surround lucid dreaming and altered states of consciousness. David writes a great deal about non-ordinary states, so the conversation begins with a look at whether waking consciousness is the altered state, and the unconventional idea that traditional altered states actually point out aspects of the natural state. David then shares his “go-to” induction methods, and a battery of practical tips about having lucid dreams. The conversation transitions into his area of expertise, which is supplemental agents for initiating lucidity (like Mexican and African dream herbs, velvet bean, mugwort, vitamin B-6, galantamine), and tips for how to use these available substances. The dialogue shifts into a discussion of psychedelics, and their extraordinary potential. Emphasis is placed on how to bring these mind-altering experiences onto the path. What's the best thing to do before and after a trip? What is the promise and peril of these agents? What's the safest way to use them? David then shares some of his most transformative lucid dream experiences, and closes with how to use lucid dreams for healing (including surrogate healing). David's work around lucid dreaming is among the most radical, innovative, controversial, provocative, researched, and mind-expanding approaches I've seen. No stone is left unturned. - Because David was unable to do this recording with our usual platform, the audio is a bit compromised. We apologize for this, but had no other options. Download In this episode, Kyle and Joe host Rebecca Ann Hill and David Jay Brown, Authors of the book, Women of Visionary Art. The book showcases the work and inspiration of female artists such as Josephine Wall, Allison Grey, Amanda Sage, Martina Hoffman, Carolyn Mary Kleefeld and many others. 3 Key Points: Rebecca Ann Hill and David Jay Brown are co-authors of the book, Women of Visionary Art, which includes discussions with 18 female artists. The book and the episode are an exploration of the role that dreaming, psychedelic experiences, and mystical visions play in visionary art. There is a strong need for a balancing of masculine and feminine energies. Females tend to be more nurturing and more cooperative, and it's exactly the factors that are missing in our current world and are causing problems of greed. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes About David David’s background is in Psychobiology, the interface between psychology and biology He spent 10-15 years working in neuroscience and research labs His interest in Neuroscience came from his experience as a teenager, experimenting with psychedelics He wrote his first book, The Science of Psychedelics, about 10 years ago David mentions that the psychedelic renaissance has allowed him to write openly about psychedelic topics that he’s been preparing his whole life researching for About Rebecca aka Molly Moon Sparkles She has a huge creative drive She is currently studying psychology and is playing in the art program She is fascinated by entheogens, plant medicines and psychedelic compounds She is a painter and is working on the Molly Moon Magick Series that focuses on the divine feminine She wrote and illustrated the book Ecstatic Love, Lost Dreams and Mystic Visions Psychedelics and Creativity There is strong evidence that psychedelics improve creativity Music, art, technology, so many great things are influenced by psychedelics Putting the Book Together David was so fascinated with the visions he would see on psychedelics and wished that he had the talent to portray it through artwork, and then he began to see artists bring these visions to life He also saw a lot of gender inequality, that there were more men than women in the visionary art space It urged him to highlight the under recognized women in visionary art Rebecca was experimenting with other realms with plant medicines and psychedelic compounds She says her consciousness was so drastically different from any other time in her life, and she started painting her psychedelic experiences This led her to begin building community with other artists who shared the same ‘vision’ as her She said that the psychedelic experience has so much feminine nature to it that wasn't being voiced “We are going through a serious ecological crisis right now and the teachings behind the psychedelic experience is to heal the collective and help climate change” - Rebecca Stanley Krippner conducted a survey of artists and psychedelics The Imbalance of Masculine and Feminine There is an uprising of feminism with the “Me Too” movement, women in congress, women’s marches Our species has been so dominated by men and we need the nurturing and caring aspects of the feminine perspective Surprising Aspects of the Women The most surprising aspect is how much in common the women had David says it was beautiful how well each artist was connected to each other through their stories Laura Holden is completely self taught There were two women from the book that had never touched a psychedelic substance They were inspired through dreams and daydreams The psychedelic experience not only inspires the artwork, but it creates a new way of viewing artwork Kyle mentions that he always wished he could record his dreams Joe says he has been seeing research around capturing visual or imagined imagery Discovering the Artists David discovered most of the artists that he had not previously known through the community Rebecca had been a part of as visionary artists COSM and Entheon August 3rd, Rebecca and David are giving a presentation as COSM in New York Entheon, the Sanctuary for Visual art may be open by them Entheon will have workshops, painting classes, rooms to stay in, full moon ceremonies, etc. It will be an art sanctuary, a church with a spiritual and psychedelic essence Visionary art is getting into museums and becoming a recognized art form The Desperate Need for Balance Terrence McKenna told David that early on in human civilization, men didn't understand the role that sex had in creating babies The power of reproduction was within women and sex was something else Once men began thinking that they were responsible for the generation of life, they starting saying its “my baby” its “my wife” instead of ‘our’ baby or the community’s baby. It kept developing into “my child” into “my country”, “MY”. Then people started using less psychedelics and started consuming more alcohol and now everything is an over exaggerated male dominance “Females tend to be more nurturing and more cooperative, and it's exactly the factors that are missing in our current world and are causing problems of greed. It could be balanced and harmonized with more feminine energy.” - David There is a crucial imbalance from male and female in history alone But more than an imbalance between just males and females, it's about an imbalance of masculine and feminine energies Each of us, male and females have both a masculine and feminine energy We can see the masculine and feminine imbalance in the world and our planet right now. We don't need to shift to a goddess worshiping planet, but we just need to be back in balance and bring more feminine energy of nurturing and compassion and caring and healing Penny (an artist highlighted in the book) mentions about Sandos giving LSD to researchers who gave it to artists Getting Involved “If you want to get involved in painting, dancing, making jewelry, clothing, gardening, don't wait. Do it. If you are true to yourself and your own inner visions, you will succeed” - Rebecca One thing all artists have in common is fear and insecurity, so you can't let it hinder you from beginning Final Thoughts Artists like Android Jones are doing visionary artwork in virtual reality mediums David thinks visionary artwork will become only even more interactive and immersive spaces We need to find a more yin-yang balance between masculine and feminine Links Women of Visionary Art (Amazon) Women of Visionary Art (Inner Traditions) David’s Site Rebecca’s Site MollyMoonSparkle blog About Rebecca Rebecca Ann Hill (AKA Molly Moon Sparkle), is a visual artist with a wide range of experience in different creative mediums. She is the co-author and illustrator of “Ecstatic Love, Lost Dreams & Mystic Visions”, as well as “Women of Visionary Art.” Primarily a painter, she is creating a new series entitled “Molly Moon Magick,” and her other projects include dancing with “Gold Town Burlesque,” writing a blog -“Go Ask Molly”- and working on a new book about her spiritual awakening. East of West comic book by Jonathan Hickman This is the world. It is not the one we wanted, but it is the one we deserved. Is a quote from the East of West comic book series. ----more---- The comic received nominations for Best Writer, Best Continuing Series, Best Artist, and Best Colorist from the Eisner Awards (unfortunately winning none of them). That’s massive amount of praise and honor surrounding this book East of West is a comic book series published by Image Comics Created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Nick Dragotta, the book is a science fiction Western set in a dystopian version of the United States whose fate rests with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Things didn’t exactly go down in the American Civil War like expected. The war went on and on and on between the North and South; even the Native Americans got in on the fighting. Then, after years and years of fighting, a huge comet collided with the Earth and the people saw it as a sign to end. In 1908, America was divided up into the Seven Nations of America. On the same day, two figures from different walks of life, Elijah Longstreet and Red Cloud, told of something big on the horizon before they died. Several years later, another big figure dies, delivering out another message. When all three accounts were combined, they came together and created something called The Message. It is the story—or perhaps an actual account—of how the world will end. Flash forward to the year 2064 and that’s where the story begins. The Union: The north east region of the US The Confederacy: The southeast region of the US The Kingdom: Louisiana region of the US The Endless Nation: Central plains region of the US The Republic of Texas: Texas and Oklahoma region of the US PRA: Western region of the US, from the Rocky mountains to the pacific ocean The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Death, War, Famine, and Conquest) seek to bring about the end of the world. Their plans are interrupted when the daughter of the leader of the PRA falls in love with death. Essentially love conquers death. When I found this series it reminded me of the Stephen King Dark Tower series in some ways. Both are futuristic western post-apocalyptic worlds. The story has a lot of characters and can be difficult to follow at time. In some ways that makes it interesting too, because the reader doesn’t spend much time on one single character. Hickman has created an immense world for his characters to play in. When the series is done I hope he does a few short runs in the world he has created. The intrigue and deception the leaders of the 7 nations create is fun to follow. You never know what kind of coupe or assassination attempt they are going to try next. If you haven’t picked it up I suggest you do so. Image has put the entire series into an 8 volume set. On April of this year, Amazon Studios, Skybound Entertainment and Hickman are developing an hour-long series Binge reading comics In the age of streaming it’s no wonder my comic reading patterns have changed, have yours? It could be the fact for the most part I haven’t been into comics in almost 25 years. I bought some here and there during that time, but not like I did in the early 90’s. I might have a subconscious need to try and catch up. I think and you might have the same perspective, I like to be able to read a story from beginning to end without having to wait a month for the latest issue to come out. Just like binging a TV show on Netflix, binging on a comic book story is similar. I know many old timers like me have gone from getting the floppies as they are called to the TPB. Since it’s cheaper per issue to do it this way. If you are not a collector this is the way to go in my opinion. I am more of a lover of the story and art not the perceived value of the issue. If you like collecting for the value great, some people enjoy the hunt for certain issues. If you like that great! Either way keep reading and enjoy the format, whether it’s binging or month have fun. How have your reading habits changed over the years? Nerdy dads Recently I celebrated father’s day, and it was great. My kids know I’m nerdy and took me to a local comic book shop which also connects to a huge retro toy store with toys from the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. We spent hours looking and laughing at all sorts of things we saw. One son found some old DND players and DM guides written by Gary Gygax. Another son found one of those old mini Pac man arcade machines. At the comic shop they were selling stacks of comics for a dollar and for an old cheapskate like me that was right up my alley. Some of the comic in the stack were one I had lost because I was storing a long box in the basement and the AC condensation hose broke and was flooding the basement for days before we noticed. I know you are screaming to yourself what an idiot. In all fairness I had been storing them like this for over 26 years without an issue. But yes lesson learned. Anyway they heard me mention this and while I was looking at some other stuff they went and bought me a couple of stacks of comics. While I was there I saw a lady in the store who looking at comics and she found a TPB and commented to the store owner her dad loved the writer and was getting it for him. She also bought a few things for her husband. Her daughter who was with her also bought a few books for her dad. And paid for it herself, she was probably around 6 or 7 counting out her quarters and few dollars she had, it was heartwarming to see kids young and old and their nerdy dads interact with the things they nerd out about. Do you do nerdy things with your dad? Doesn’t have to be nerdy, but since this is a nerd podcast that’s what we focus on here. If you and your dad like to fish do it together, if you and your dad like to watch baseball do it together. Whatever it is do it together while you still can, he won’t be around forever. Take advantage of your time while you still can. Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:02:40 - Setup of interview 00:06:49 - Interview with Jeff Lemire 01:33:07 - Wrap up 01:34:37 - Contact us On this interview episode Derek and Andy are excited to have Jeff Lemire as their guest. His new graphic novel, Roughneck, has just been released by Simon & Schuster's Gallery 13 imprint, and he has a new ongoing series through Image Comics, Royal City. The guys talk with Jeff about those works, particularly their place within Lemire's growing body of writing, but they also ask him about his other current ongoing series, such as Descender (with Dustin Nguyen on art), Black Hammer (along with Dean Ormston), and the miniseries A.D.: After Death (written by Scott Snyder). A lot of ground is covered in this interview, including revelations on the early origins of Roughneck, the long-range plans for Royal City, the themes and characters that seem to be woven throughout Jeff's oeuvre, the curious links between Descender and Adam Strange, and Jeff's thoughts on "slice of life" stories and their reception within the comics-reading community. And here's a fun fact! Jeff Lemire was actually the focus of the Two Guys' very first creator spotlight way back in Episode 6 of The Comics Alternative, and at the time Andy and Derek thought there was almost too much to talk about in terms of Jeff's output. But now almost five years later, and with so many more titles under Jeff's belt, those assumptions seem amusing in hindsight. It's important to note that Andy and Derek recorded their interview with Jeff the day before this year's Eisner Award nominations were announced, where he has landed in the Best New Series and Best Writer categories (both for Black Hammer). This is why no one brings up the Eisners at any time in the conversation. But a big CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff for this well-deserved attention!

She is performing her new show, Anglichanka - meaning Englishwoman - in Moscow. She says she's the first UK comedian to perform in Russia - in Russian. The sessions transformed his life and, with his psychologist's encouragement, he enrolled in education classes in prison, gained a BA in History and wrote a regular column about life inside. His memoir, Redeemable - A Memoir of Darkness and Hope is published by Bloomsbury. Sally Wainwright is a writer and director.
