In Her Image: Finding Heavenly Mother in Scripture, Scholarship, the Arts, & Everyday Life

In this episode, Jess reads "Nephi and His Asherah" by Daniel C. Peterson. Abstract Asherah was the chief goddess of the Canaanites. She was El's wife and the mother and wet nurse of the other gods. At least some Israelites worshipped her over a period from the conquest of Canaan in the second millennium before Christ to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC (the time of Lehi's departure with his family). Asherah was associated with trees—sacred trees. The rabbinic authors of the Jewish Mishna (second–third century ad) explain the asherah as a tree that was worshipped. In 1 Nephi 11, Nephi considers the meaning of the tree of life as he sees it in vision. In answer, he receives a vision of “a virgin, . . . the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh.” The answer to his question about the meaning of the tree lies in the virgin mother with her child. The virgin is the tree in some sense and Nephi accepted this as an answer to his question. As an Israelite living at the end of the seventh century and during the early sixth century before Christ, he recognized an answer to his question about a marvelous tree in the otherwise unexplained image of a virginal mother and her divine child—not that what he saw and how he interpreted those things were perfectly obvious. What he “read” from the symbolic vision was culturally colored. Nephi's vision reflects a meaning of the “sacred tree” that is unique to the ancient Near East. Asherah is also associated with biblical wisdom literature. Wisdom, a female, appears as the wife of God and represents life. Peterson, Daniel C. (2000) "Nephi and His Asherah," Journal of Book of Mormon Studies: Vol. 9: No. 2, Article 4.Available at: https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/jbms/vol9/iss2/4

In the unlikely event that the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve all died simultaneously, how would that affect succession? In this hypothetical worst-case scenario, would the keys of the kingdom be lost? And, if an apostle came down with a debilitating health problem, is there any precedent for making him an emeritus apostle?  And speaking of apostles, is there a set procedure in calling them, or does the method vary from Church president to president? Also, sometimes in the Church people speak of a special requirement for a man to become an apostle—the phrase “sure” or “special” witness of Christ comes up a lot. What's true? Must a man have personally seen Jesus Christ in order to be fully considered an apostle? On this episode of Church History Matters Casey and I are joined by a special guest, Dr. Daniel C. Peterson, to help us answer these and other great questions related to succession.  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

In Egypt, there are more gods than you can count, and Jehovah makes it clear that not only is He God, but He is the only one who can deliver the covenant people out of bondage. In Her Image: Finding Heavenly Mother in Scripture, Scholarship, the Arts, & Everyday Life

Singer/songwriter McCall Char joins Jess for this episode. McCall shares her song "Oh Mother Mother" and discusses how the inspiration for the song came. They talk about the range of feelings that can accompany a journey to the Goddess, and what those feelings may be trying to communicate. McCall relates how seeking Heavenly Mother has affected her relationship with the Father, and lets us in on personal revelation she has received when feelings of doubt and darkness start to creep in around her desire to learn more of Her. McCall's vulnerability and down-to-earth yet free spirit inspire hope and persistence in a journey that can seem daunting and unyielding at times. The first major scholarly analysis and critique of the Book of Abraham by world-class Egyptologists came in 1912 and was published in the New York Times.  Of course this article was neither appropriately considered nor adequately addressed by LDS church leadership, and ultimately the issue faded from LDS church membership consciousness for several more decades. Beginning in 1966 with the rediscovery of the core Book of Abraham papyri fragments found in the archives of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art (that were thought to have been lost in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire), Mormon apologists such as Hugh Nibley, John Gee, Daniel C. Peterson, Kerry Muhlestein, Michael D. Rhodes, etc. have attempted to employ apologetic tactics to rescue the Book of Abraham from a total loss of credibility - once credible translations of the papyrus demonstrated undeniably that Joseph Smith's "translation" was 100% inaccurate, and in fact, had nothing to do with Abraham at all.  In fact, the papyri were dated to be written over 1500 years after the time Abraham would have lived. For decades questioning, doubting, and non-believing Mormons have engaged with Mormon apologists like Nibley, Gee, Muhlestein, and Rhodes to determine the historicity and legitimacy of the Book of Abraham - with the credibility of Joseph Smith and the LDS church restoration hanging in the balance.  In spite of the LDS church's century-long efforts to either hide or convolute the issues surrounding the Book of Abraham, many Mormons have lost their faith and left the church over the Book of Abraham, as it is often listed as one of the primary reasons that Mormons lose their faith. While many orthodox, doubting, and post-Mormons have heard the opinions of pseudo-Egyptologists/Book of Abraham apologists like John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, and Michael D. Rhodes, few Mormons or post-Mormons have actually heard the opinions of a legitimate, world-class Egyptologist about the historicity and credibility of the Book of Abraham - until today. Today, as a joint production of Mormon Stories Podcast and Radio Free Mormon podcast, we interview Dr. Robert Ritner.  Dr. Ritner is Professor of Egyptology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago and was from 1991-1996 the first Marilyn M. Simpson Assistant Professor of Egyptology at Yale University.  Dr. Ritner is the author of over 100 publications on Egyptian religion, magic, medicine, language and literature, as well as social and political history. He has lectured extensively on each of these topics throughout the United States, Europe and Egypt.  Ritner has led Oriental Institute tours of Egypt for 30 years.  He is also the author of The Joseph Smith Egyptian Papyri: A Complete Edition, and an essay entitled “Translation and Historicity of the Book of Abraham” — A Response - written as a response to the LDS church's gospel topics essay on the Book of Abraham, which is deeply problematic according to Dr. Ritner. In this three-part sit-down with Dr. Ritner, we will discuss his upbringing in Houston, Texas and his scholarly background and the events that led to him becoming interested in the Book of Abraham.  We will provide a contextualizing history to the Book of Abraham story, and discuss in-depth Joseph Smith's completely erroneous translation of Facsimiles 1-3 from the papyrus.  We explore the emergence of the Abraham Egyptian Papers in the mid 1960s, along with the discovery of the "lost" Book of Abraham papyrus.  We end this series by exploring some of the seemingly unscholarly and disingenuous tactics used by Book of Abraham apologists John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, and Michael D. Rhodes to try to bolster belief in the Book of Abraham. Finally, a HUGE thanks to Bruce MacArthur for making this interview possible. Also, a MASSIVE thanks to RFM for co-hosting, Bill Reel for all of his great work over the years, along with all of the amazing scholars who helped me/us prepare for this interview, including: Mike Brown of the Mormon Stories Truth Claims essays, MormonThink, Jeremy Runnells and the CES Letter, Dan Vogel, Brent Metcalfe, Letter for my Wife, MormonInfoGraphics.com, this super cool video, and much much more content than I could ever fully list here. If you can help, please contact Dana McClain, Northwestern Medicine Transplant Coordinator, 312-695-0828. Living donors save lives! ============ For more than a century Joseph Smith's Book of Abraham "translation" has been revered as holy scripture by devout Mormons, and denounced by all credible Egyptologists as a 100% erroneous translation -- a combination of Joseph Smith's imagination and some plagiarism (much like the Book of Mormon, the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible, and the Mormon temple ceremony. Rhodes, and Brian Hauglid have attempted to employ apologetic tactics to rescue the Book of Abraham from a total loss of credibility - once credible translations of the papyrus demonstrated undeniably that Joseph Smith's "translation" was 100% inaccurate, and in fact, had nothing to do with Abraham at all. Ritner. Rhodes.  We also plan to coordinate a direct discussion between Dr. John Gee and Dr. Robert Ritner (if John Gee accepts the invitation...if not...we have other plans). Finally, a HUGE thanks to Bruce MacArthur for making this interview possible. Also, a MASSIVE thanks to RFM for co-hosting, Bill Reel for all of his great work over the years, along with all of the amazing scholars who helped me/us prepare for this interview, including: Mike Brown of the Mormon Stories Truth Claims essays, Dan Vogel, Brent Metcalfe, MormonThink, Jeremy Runnells and the CES Letter, Letter for my Wife, MormonInfoGraphics.com, this super cool video, and much much more content than I could ever fully list here. "'Secret Combinations' Revisited" by Daniel C. Peterson is a short article that appeared in the first issue of the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies. This article revisited an early criticism of the Book of Mormon, that the use of the term "secret combinations" and some derivatives were a thinly veiled attack on Masonry in the early 19th century. Dr. Peterson spends some effort to show how such an assertion has little basis in context. Daniel Peterson (left) and Nick Galieti (right - host) In this fascinating episode, Nick Galieti sits down with legendary BYU Scholar, Daniel C. Peterson, long time professor of Islamic Studies, and founder of The Mormon Interpreter Foundation (a tremendous resource for LDS Scholarship). We talk about the various ways in which Mormonism and Islam are similar, and what ways they are different, as well as some cultural know-how to avoid awkward conversations, or perhaps other missteps that could result in damage to cherished relationships between members of the two faiths. We ended up finding out that this subject seems to be of such importance that the First Presidency has asked Daniel Peterson to write an article for the Ensign on the same subject as our interview! While missionaries specifically going to Africa or Europe will get some valuable information from this episode, anyone anywhere in the world can come to know, and appreciate one of the largest religions in the world as well as how we can more faithfully interact with them. (Update: Daniel Peterson's article in the Ensign on this topic was released in the April 2018 issue of the Ensign Magazine and can be read by clicking here.)   Shawn Rapier (left - host) Nick Galieti (right - guest) This episode also features an interview with our host Nick Galieti when he appeared on the Latter-Day Lives Podcast with Shawn Rapier. This is a rare interview includes some of Nick's mission stories when he served in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission from 97-99. This is rare because in the 7 years that Nick has been podcasting, and in over 600 podcasts which he has produced/hosted/voiced, this is only the 3rd time where Nick was the one being interviewed. This episode will also have a follow up on our Book of Mormon Challenge from the first episode with a story of the placing of a Book of Mormon in ARABIC! Few aspects of Joseph Smith’s life have been scrutinized more in recent years than his personal practice of polygamy. Some readers' first exposure to Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy comes from reading sensational headlines. Exaggerations and assumptions fill internet discussions, podcasts, and newspaper articles, so it is hard to know where to go for accurate information. The temptation by some authors to fill in historical gaps often results in distortions that stir up emotions and create tantalizing soundbites that, even if largely fictional, may generate unnecessary fear and confusion. Polygamy is part of the collective Mormon past that many struggle to understand. Current members have no cultural or religious basis to situate plural marriage. Members in pioneer Nauvoo shared that same struggle. When Benjamin Johnson first heard of it, he recalled: "If a thunderbolt had fallen at my feet I could hardly have been more shocked or amazed." Early Mormon polygamy is a historical puzzle that can at best be awkwardly reconstructed from fragmentary recollections. But it is apparent from reminiscences that those who practiced it were convinced it represented a religious practice instituted by God. Church Historian Matt Grow noted that the more complicated the history, the more nuanced conclusions should be. Mormon polygamy was undoubtedly complicated, warranting provisional conclusions. In this interview, Daniel C. Peterson of the Interpreter Foundation interviews Brian and Laura Hales about the most common questions asked about Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. Join us for this candid discussion about what can and cannot be known about Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. This episode is a joint production of LDS Perspectives and the Interpreter Foundation.
