Return To Dust embodies the sound of shedding the weight of the past while embracing the promise of tomorrow. The Los Angeles-based quartet—Matty Bielawski [guitar, vocals], Graham Stanush [bass, vocals], Sebastian Gonzalez [guitar], and London Hudson [drums]— brings a fresh perspective to alternative rock. Their music fuses powerful harmonies, fuzz-laden riffs, and seismic grooves, fueled by the raw energy of four Gen Z friends jamming in a garage. What may seem like a traditional approach on paper feels like an act of rebellion today, rippling towards a real turn of the tide. As the story goes, the band settled in Los Angeles to record with producer Jim Kaufman [Everclear, Danny Worsnop, Night Riots, Helmet]. 2024 saw them unveil their independent self-titled full-length debut, Return To Dust, featuring single “Belly Up” which surged online, organically gathering over 2 million Spotify streams. Distorted Sound hailed it as “a grungy, punky thrill ride,” while Revolver applauded the group's “Alice In Chains-inspired form of modern-day grunge.” In the aftermath, they lit up the stages at major festivals like Inkarceration, Welcome To Rockville, and Sonic Temple, while also joining rock legends Chevelle and Sevendust as support on their respective tours. Signing to LAVA Records/Republic Records with more music on the horizon, the group is poised to stand at the forefront of the next generation of rock music.

So much is made of the sophomore album syndrome with bands, especially the belief that a second album can often be the making or breaking of a band in terms of longevity and success. Although personally I have never favoured that belief - good music is good music whether it's your first, second, third or fourth album - there are many bands who have dished up below-par second albums and never recovered. The answer to that is pretty simple.Attack each and every album with a wholehearted belief and trust in what has got you there in the first place. Or you could go one better and try to better yourself musically, which is exactly what emo rock outfit The Funeral Portrait have done with their second album Greetings From Suffocate City, which will be laid bare this Friday, September 13.With the full backing of their label Better Noise Music, The Funeral Portrait have poured their entire beings into their follow up to 2016's A Moment Of Silence, creating a sonic tapestry of songs that showcases the band in a powerful new light bristling with confidence and expansion.Plus, toss in the fact they have landed guest artists such as Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Eva Under Fire and you suddenly have a melting pot of bristling, emotive rock music that looks set to propel The Funeral Portrait into the next wave of rock royalty that they have tirelessly been working towards.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Lee Jennings to find out more."It was a lot to do with…," he surmised. "Growing up, I was always the weird kid. I was always the loner or that kind of guy who was made fun of for being too tall or too weird or being into… I was always into anime, or musical theatre, just different from everyone else. Everyone else, especially around me, was into sports. I wanted to write a record that was kind of a love letter to the younger me, so every song has to do with some sort of experience that happened in prior years."In the full interview, Lee talks more about Greetings From Suffocation City and what to expect, his inspirations behind the music, motivating yourself to put out the best album you can, the story arc across the 14 tracks, how this album differs musically to A Moment Of Silence, what he learnt about himself and his music between albums, the guest artists and how they came to be on the record, making a statement with music, the band's blending of genres and how they come together, the theatrics within their music, touring plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Send us a Text Message.Danny Worsnop, born on September 4, 1990, in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England, is best known as the lead vocalist of the British rock band Asking Alexandria. His distinctive voice and charismatic stage presence have been central to the band's success and evolution over the years.Worsnop co-founded Asking Alexandria in 2008 alongside guitarist Ben Bruce. The band quickly gained traction in the metalcore scene with their debut album, Stand Up and Scream, released in 2009. This album was characterized by its heavy breakdowns, electronic elements, and Worsnop's powerful screams and melodic singing. It helped establish the band as a force within the genre, and Worsnop's dynamic vocal abilities were a significant factor in this rise.Following the success of their debut, Asking Alexandria released Reckless & Relentless in 2011. This album marked a shift towards a more rock-oriented sound while retaining their metalcore roots. Worsnop's versatility as a vocalist was showcased through his ability to switch seamlessly between harsh and clean vocals, contributing to the album's critical and commercial success. In 2013, the band released From Death to Destiny, further evolving their sound. This album leaned more towards hard rock and featured Worsnop exploring a wider range of vocal styles. His performance on tracks like "The Death of Me" and "Moving On" highlighted his growth as a singer and songwriter. However, in 2015, Worsnop parted ways with Asking Alexandria to focus on other musical endeavors, including his rock band We Are Harlot and a solo career. During this period, he explored different genres, showcasing his versatility as an artist. His solo work, particularly the album The Long Road Home, delved into country and blues influences, demonstrating his ability to adapt and excel in various musical styles. In a surprising turn of events, Worsnop rejoined Asking Alexandria in 2016. Interview by Kris PetersAsking Alexandria have always traversed the sonic tightrope between rock and metal, refusing to be stereotyped or labelled in the process.Over the course of seven previous albums the band has had moments of pure aggression offset by lashings of beauty, creating their own musical boundaries with a contempt for convention rarely sustained by bands with a global fanbase.Frontman Danny Worsnop has been behind many of the sonic disparities released by Asking Alexandria, his voice capable of shredding with the best of them but also becoming a source of emotional and sorrow at will. They are a band who are divisive in some quarters but have only ever proclaimed to be serving themselves as master with others more than welcome to board or alight the train at any time. With Asking Alexandria's eighth album, the ominously titled Where Do We Go From Here? due out on August 25 it seems the band have taken personal stock of their career to date and committed to disk a collection of songs that serve as a culmination of their career to date.HEAVY caught up with Worsnop as he sat in the tattoo chair recently to talk more about the album."It always sounds bad to say, and I don't mean it in a bad way, but I don't care about releases," he answered when asked if nerves were still a factor before an album drop. "This has been our album for the last year and as of three days from now it's not our album any more. It's everyone elses album. A lot of people look at the release date as the start of the album, but for me it's the end. Come Friday, that's when I get to start the next one."Where Do We Go From Here? is being promoted as a culmination of Asking Alexandria's historical body of work, so we ask Worsnop how much of a tightly wrapped package it is."We very much didn't want to try anything new," he offered. "We didn't want to re-invent the wheel. We didn't want it to be anything exploring or adventurous. It was supposed to be a look back on the last 15 years and a snapshot of everything thus far, sonically touching on everything we've done prior to thematically going back to subjects that have resonated with people from those albums. Instead of it being a personal record for us it's definitely for them."The title Where Do We Go From Here? could serve as both a statement or a question, but Worsnop argues the way it was written was slanted more towards the latter."It's a question, and one I ask myself a lot," he answered. "And one I think everyone should be asking themself all the time. I'm very goal motivated and orientated, so in my life that's the question I ask the most because regardless of the success or failure or win or loss that's the first question because you've gotta figure out what the next step is. When things are bad that's the only question we can really ask ourselves."In the full interview, Danny talks more about the subject matter on Where Do We Go From Here?, how it encapsulates the last 15 years of Asking Alexandria's life, closing certain chapters of music, the one minute banger Kill It With Fire and its surprising origin, the title and closing track and how it ties in with the album theme, his personal line of tequila and more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Asking Alexandria over Zoom video!Since 2008, Asking Alexandria, formed and based in the U.K., have paved a path of their own, distilling danger and excess into an equally dangerous hybrid of stadium rock ambition, metallic energy, and electronic ecstasy. Against all odds, they achieved unprecedented success earmarked by two gold-certified singles (namely, “Final Episode (Let's Change The Channel)” and “Not The American Average”), over a billion cumulative streams and views, and three consecutive top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200—Reckless & Relentless [2011], From Death to Destiny [2013], and The Black [2016]. In addition to headlining packed gigs on five continents, they destroyed stages alongside Guns N' Roses, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains and Slipknot, to name a few. Meanwhile, 2017's self-titled Asking Alexandria spawned two of the group's biggest singles to date: “Alone In A Room” (40 million Spotify streams) and “Into the Fire” (30 million Spotify streams). The quintet—Ben Bruce [guitar, backing vocals], Danny Worsnop [lead vocals], James Cassells [drums], Cameron Liddell [guitar], and Sam Bettley [bass]— saw their first-ever #1 at U.S. radio with the single “Alone Again,” taken from their latest critically acclaimed album See What's On The Inside and a second Top 10 single “Never Gonna Learn” (#6). The band were also featured on the soundtrack for Better Noise Film's 2022 horror-thriller The Retaliators with the track “Faded Out (feat. Within Temptation),” and on the collaborative theme song “The Retaliators Theme (21 Bullets)” alongside Motley Crue, Ice Nine Kills and From Ashes to New. Worsnop also appeared as a guest on Hyro The Hero's “Who's That Playing On The Radio” in addition to Mick Mars.Asking Alexandria recently released their new track "Dark Void" via Better Noise Music. Season 6 Episode 11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 16 March 2023.  Badlands with Jake E. Lee and the late Ray Gillan got us out the blocks with a track called ‘Devil's Stomp'.  From there we had some more devils courtesy of Chickenfoot and a track called ‘Different Devil' off Chickenfoot III.  It was pretty much full-bore rock and roll for the first hour with bands like Godsmack, Stone Sour, and Marilyn Manson.  In particular, Stone Sour with ‘Do Me a Favour' and Godsmack off their brand new album Lighting Up The Sky and a track called “Red White and Blue made a good pairing.   By request from Ash a brand new listener we had Shinedown with Breaking Inside' and then Rival Sons with ‘Burn Down Los Angeles'.  From there is went a bit off the rails and served as a reminder that TSORR is not for young children as demonstrated by, Buckcherry's ‘Somebody F*****d With Me', and Metallica's cover of The Anti Nowhere League's infamous  'So What'.  Then we went back to TSORR roots with ‘Samurai' off Assault Attack from The Michael Schenker Group and then a track from Scorpions which made it a Schenker family affair.  Pretty much the only time you can get the Schenker bros together is if you play their songs back-to-back.  Sad ☹. For this week's Ultimate Challenge, we looked at 1987:  the four albums featured were from Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n Roses, and Whitesnake.  We had a great 4-minute interview with Ryno Theron, vocalist and guitarist from Truth Decayed, and followed this by we playing their brand-new track ‘Death By Design'.  It was a hell of a busy show;  we played more SA music with a brand-new track from Jack Hammer Band who are flying the flag for our beloved Piet Botha, then Blue Scream featuring my good friend Roger Kaye on vocals along with Robin Gallagher and Tully McCully.  This week's Immortals was 13 min long, check it out, ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner' off Powerslave sounded amazing.  Iron Maiden are something else.  I recall hearing Phil Wright play the whole track back in 1984 when the album was released.  We wrapped up with Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Volbeat's ‘Shotgun Blues', especially for Ian and Hardus, and said cheers with Bloodstone by the mighty Judas Priest.     Artists featured:  Badlands, Chickenfoot, Cinderella, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, Stone Sour, Godsmack, L.A. Guns, Rival Sons, Shinedown, Buckcherry, Metallica, Ramones, Michael Schenker Group, Scorpions, Dio, Girish and the Chronicles, Dead City Ruins, Danny Worsnop, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n' Roses, Whitesnake, Truth Decayed, Frank Zappa, Blue Scream, Jack Hammer Band, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Volbeat, Judas Priest.        The Story of Rock and Roll. 2 piece Sayreville, New Jersey band FRACTURE joins STRIKE A CHORD. Mason Keith brings the METAL and Devin Hasselbrink brings the CORE—what's that spell?—METALCORE! Quick TRIVIA, Sayreville, New Jersey is also the hometown of Jon Bon Jovi and a tasty Pork Roll breakfast sandwich! The long argued controversial topic of Backing Tracks has resurfaced once again causing a “fractured' metal community — Backing track or not to Backing track—that is the question. Keep it real and raw! FRACTURE EP release “Reflections of Regret” is an angry record without a lot of forgiveness. Hasselbrink had to get a lot off his chest—SCREAM his frustrations to the world! We listened and head banged in agreement—church is out! “Crestfallen” FRACTURE's debut music video opens with a voice over: “and I do not hope for a better world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others, I want no one to escape”—a line from Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Damaged vocal cords are real when singing heavy metal. Vocalists like M. Shadows from Avenge Seven and Danny Worsnop from Asking Alexandria have both torn their vocal cords. BUT Hasselbrink has an interesting solution to keeping his voice nice and crunchy. Fracture your neck! It's the new headbangers motto. Support and Listen to FRACTURE: https://linktr.ee/FractureNJ

Asking Alexandria have celebrated their signing to Better Noise Music earlier this year with a new album, See What's On The Inside, due out on October 1.Having released the anthemic single Alone Again, Asking Alexandria are already basking in critical praise for See What's On The Inside, an album that the band themselves have publicly stated has galvanized their resolve and allowed them to write and record together for the first time in over a decade.Enigmatic frontman Danny Worsnop joined HEAVY to discuss the album and the fresh approach to recording it.“We wanted to go back to our roots and the place we started, which was, in one form or another, big rock songs,” he explained. “We grew up on that kind of music in the 70s and 80s and kind of the 90s - just big, beautiful rock songs that make people feel. That was the point of this record, both in tone and how we made it as well. We wanted it to be very real, very organic, very... analogue. We wanted to make it feel like a record that when you listen to it you feel like you're in the room."Guitarist Ben Bruce is quoted as saying the album is “a result of the band reconnecting and falling back in love with what started the band in the first place”. I put this to Danny to see if he agrees. “He's a dirty liar!” he laughed, adding “I think the album was a very different thing for each of us, but it was definitely a process that we haven't done in a very long time. We haven't done it like we did now ever! We haven't been in a studio with each other since the very first record and even then, it was a lot of programming and doing stuff digitally. There was a lot of manipulation on everything. There's not one word on that record that sounded like it did when I actually sang it so it was... we were a very, very, very digital band and I think as beautiful as technology is in helping us create more and have access to all these incredible creative tools it can also in many ways sterilize the soul of what you're trying to do and this definitely gave us an opportunity to fall in love with making music in this way and with each other."In the full interview, Danny talks about the album in greater detail, the importance of choosing the right song to open an album, the musical influences on the album and how they gel, the early days of Asking Alexandria and where they fit in musically, their upcoming run of shows and more.

After celebrating a decade of music with greatest hits collection To Be Loved: The Best of Papa Roach in 2010, Papa Roach are about to enter an elite club with the release of another greatest hits package – this time celebrating their period with Better Noise Records from 2010 to 2019.Greatest Hits Volume 2: The Better Noise Years will be out on March 19 and features 21 songs – 12 of which were top 10 hits. It also includes three unreleased remixes and two unreleased acoustic tunes recorded Live at the YouTube Studios in NYC.Asking Alexandria frontman Danny Worsnop also lends his vocal prowess to the album, guesting on the track “Broken As Me”.Guitarist Jerry Horton joined HEAVY to discuss the album earlier this week, beginning by answering the question of if he thinks the 21 songs assembled are a good reflection of the musical output of Papa Roach over the last 10 years."I think so, yeah,” he nodded. “Each one is kind of... each single kind of sums up the direction of each individual album. There's not just singles on there but also some non-singles that are fan favourites which is pretty cool that we got to put some extra things on there for the fans who really love to dig into that kind of stuff”.Although greatest hits albums are often frowned upon by the bands themselves who fall victim to corporate greed and contractual obligations by presenting them to the public, Horton admits the ability to even be in the position where you are capable of having enough hits to deliver in one package makes the band reflect somewhat on their obvious success."We've been incredibly fortunate,” he smiled. “Obviously we've worked our butts off but to have a career spanning 20 years we're pretty lucky. It's a special thing."In the full interview Jerry explains the process of remixing and remastering and why a band would choose to change the original version of the songs, the track "The Ending” which featured in the upcoming movie The Retaliators, having Danny Worsnop lay down vocals on the song “Broken As Me”, thoughts on having a different guest vocalist for each track and why they elected not to, the distinct parallels between the musical output over each ten year period, new music and more.To celebrate the release of the compilation with fans, the band will host a special Livestream event on Sunday March 21, at 3am NSW time on their social channels in addition to all of Better Noise Music’s channels. The free event will include an in-conversation discussion hosted by Allison Hagendorf (Spotify’s Global Head of Rock Music).  The band will be joined by guests - Maria Brink (“In This Moment”), Jason Evigan (Producer & Songwriter “Born For Greatness”) and Michael Lombardi (Actor / Producer - The Retaliators).

Episode 92 - Music Producer Jim Kaufman! Jim is a brilliant producer and I became a fan of his through his work with the bands The Black Moods and Them Evils. I quickly found he has done so much more throughout his career. He started his production career working under the legendary Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails) on a Helmet record and the score for the first Saw movie. He quickly started producing his own records including Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria), Night Riots, Moon Fever and many more. Did I mention he also works with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister? This was a great conversation of all things music and amazing opportunity to pick the brain of one of the best producers out there!
