Chicago CWRT Meeting June 2025 David Power on "The Atlanta Campaign: Missed OpportunitiesFor more info: www.chicagocwrt.org I've got Joe Johnston Dead!" Or so Sherman is said to have exclaimed upon hearing that James B. McPherson had seized Resaca. Famously, that turned out not to be true, one of the great "lost opportunities" of the entire war. But in fact, there were other such turning points in the first month of the campaign, each perhaps more significant than Resaca. On May 16, Sherman's armies stumbled crossing the Oostenaula River, offering Johnston a chance to damage one or more of the Federal corps; and at Dallas, McPherson hesitated again when facing just a single small Confederate division. What would have happened if either of these moments had gone differently? David A. Powell is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (1983) with a BA in history. He has published numerous articles in various magazines, and more than fifteen historical simulations of different battles. For many years, David's focus was on the epic battle of Chickamauga, and he is nationally recognized for his tours of that important battlefield. The result of that study are five books, the final volume being The 2 Chickamauga Campaign: Barren Victory (2016). Subsequently, he has turned to the study of the battles for Chattanooga. Battle Above the Clouds, concerning the Battle of Lookout Mountain, was published in June of 2017. Decisions at Chickamauga followed in 2018. Two more books, "All Hell Can't Stop Them" (on Missionary Ridge) and Union Command Failure in the Shenandoah Valley both appeared in 2019. More recently The Tullahoma Campaign (co-authored with Eric Wittenberg) and Grant at Chattanooga, were published in 2020. Decisions at Shiloh appeared in 2023, and he is now hard at work on The Atlanta Campaign, a projected multi-volume study. Volume One of Atlanta appeared in July, 2024, with Volume Two to follow in 2025. David, his wife Anne, and their trio of bloodhounds live and work in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.

Lee Mottershead, Chris Cook and James Stevens examine the potential significance of the new David Power Jockeys' Cup, which kicked off at a Cheltenham November meeting that delivered a famous win for Paul Nicholls but ended in desperately sad fashion.  The panel reflects on all that happened over the three days. Alphonse Le Grande is once again the Cesarewitch winner after being reinstated following an appeals panel review of the whip disqualification that led to Manxman being awarded first place. The team considers what the saga means for the sport's whip rules. The programme ends by assessing the appointment of Lord Charles Allen to chair the BHA board and considers how effective he might be in the role.

In this episode of The DocArena Podcast, Ross Whitaker talks to Colm Quinn about his documentary Ransom '79, Ransom '79 tells the story of legendary Irish reporter Charlie Bird and his determination to break one final story before his life is cut short by Motor Neurone Disease. Charlie's sources have given him an extraordinary true crime story, one that had remained secret for decades – the attempt by a criminal gang to extort millions from the Irish government. The disease has already taken Charlie's voice. But clever use of technology means he can still do interviews – using a voice app on his ipad – and, even as his strength falters, he keeps chasing the story. Ransom '79 charts Charlie's investigation and reconstructs a scarcely-believable sequence of events that led from farce to tragedy, in a very different Ireland. But beneath it all, the film is an exploration of how one man confronting his own mortality can find respite in doing the thing he loves, even in the most terrible of circumstances. Ransom '79 is directed by Colm Quinn and is produced by John Kelleher and David Power with backing from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, Virgin Media, Derrin Group and S481. In cinemas 24th May 2024. https://filmireland.net/ Welcome to The DocArena Podcast in association with Film Ireland. My name is Ross Whitaker and every fortnight, I want to dig deeply into the motivations of documentary filmmakers – how do they choose their subject material and what approaches and strategies do they employ to fund, craft and distribute their work…

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force."I end the podcast with a Bible verse I use to encourage myself to keep going and it reminds me of who God uses in this world. I hope it will encourage you too.1 Corinthians 1:26-29For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.

David Power is one of the most involved people I've met in the industry. He is a Match Director, a board member for several Youth Shooting Organizations, a Volunteer for Shooting Sports, and of course, a competitive shooter himself! David has been working in the industry for years and has a pretty neat job helping bring products to market. David and I sit down to share more information about what the Industry Choice Awards is all about, how it got started, and what the future looks like. We talk about what it's really like working in the gun industry, how someone interested in firearms can find work in the industry, and how much it has changed over the years. Don't mind all the background noise I tried to edit out. We had a bunch of grown adults playing (not training) with a pistol simulation game.
