In this episode of The DocArena Podcast, Ross Whitaker talks to Colm Quinn about his documentary Ransom '79, Ransom '79 tells the story of legendary Irish reporter Charlie Bird and his determination to break one final story before his life is cut short by Motor Neurone Disease. Charlie's sources have given him an extraordinary true crime story, one that had remained secret for decades – the attempt by a criminal gang to extort millions from the Irish government. The disease has already taken Charlie's voice. But clever use of technology means he can still do interviews – using a voice app on his ipad – and, even as his strength falters, he keeps chasing the story. Ransom '79 charts Charlie's investigation and reconstructs a scarcely-believable sequence of events that led from farce to tragedy, in a very different Ireland. But beneath it all, the film is an exploration of how one man confronting his own mortality can find respite in doing the thing he loves, even in the most terrible of circumstances. Ransom '79 is directed by Colm Quinn and is produced by John Kelleher and David Power with backing from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, Virgin Media, Derrin Group and S481. In cinemas 24th May 2024. https://filmireland.net/ Welcome to The DocArena Podcast in association with Film Ireland. My name is Ross Whitaker and every fortnight, I want to dig deeply into the motivations of documentary filmmakers – how do they choose their subject material and what approaches and strategies do they employ to fund, craft and distribute their work…

312 In this episode, I continue to talk about the power of God and how you and I can walk in it.The Bible verse I want to use to compare how people in the Old Testament walked in the power of God compared to how you can walk in power.Matthew 11:11,12 is where you can find Jesus telling His disciples the difference between the Old and New Testaments."Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force."I end the podcast with a Bible verse I use to encourage myself to keep going and it reminds me of who God uses in this world. I hope it will encourage you too.1 Corinthians 1:26-29For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.

Interview with Paul David Power, the astonishing playwright behind 'Crippled' and contributor to 'Land of Many Shores,' both published through Breakwater Books!Paul David Power is a Canadian actor, playwright and theatre director from Newfoundland and Labrador, whose play Crippled was a nominee for the Governor General's Award for English-language drama at the 2021 Governor General's Awards.Crippled, about a gay disabled man coping with grief following the death of his partner, was based in part on his own experiences following the death of his partner, Jonathan, in 2013. Power himself has a disability which requires him to use leg braces and crutches to walk. The play was first produced for the stage in 2018, with Power performing the lead role himself, and was published by Breakwater Books in 2021. A planned production in San Francisco in 2019 was halted under complicated American rules which require foreign theatre artists to have their work bureaucratically judged as "culturally unique" before they can be granted a work permit. In 2022, the play was mounted at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, with Power playing the lead role.Power is the artistic director of his own theatre company, Power Productions, which specializes in stage plays about disability. His other plays have included Roomies, Last Chance, The View from Down Here and In Your Eyes.Originally broadcast on September 20, 2021 on CHMR 93.5 FM in St. John's, and on other great stations across the country. If we lose against Limerick we are under pressure for the next two games, we have to win the next two games. So the Limerick game is massive. If you can get a result you are looking forward to Wicklow. There’s only fourteen days between the three games so starting off well is massive.” His captain Conor Sweeney echoed that sentiment insisting the need to perform against Limerick. “We have to perform, that will be number one on the whiteboard. Limerick are a good team and they are getting better. If you give them a sniff or a bit of oxygen they will get better. The last thing we need is a dogfight so we need to hit the ground running and see where it takes us.”
